WINDOW TREATMENTS

DRAPERY STREET:

SAFE AND SHADY

Cordless Blinds are Sleek, Stylish & Safe by Christy Heitger-Ewing

CORDLESS By the end of this year, U.S. consumers will be unable to purchase window treatments with accessible cords.

When it comes to choosing window treatments, there are many options. It’s important, however, to be aware of the safety issues associated with shades that have long cords because they present a strangulation hazard to small children and pets. In fact, new industry standard rules passed in January 2018 state that by the end of the year, U.S. consumers will be unable to purchase window treatments with accessible cords. They will have to go to a window treatment specialist for corded options. This is because according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), nearly one child death per month is caused by entanglement in window blinds. Window treatment

specialists, however, can walk clients through all viable options and determine the best one for you. “If we’re meeting with someone to choose window treatments for an in-law suite for their aging parents, for example, we may suggest a totally different lift system than if it’s for a baby’s room,” says Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street. Though cordless options are most popular from both a safety and aesthetic design perspective, there are situations when they simply won’t work. For instance, in a two-story great room, the top of the window cannot be reached. An elderly or disabled person may also struggle with a cordless option. In such

instances, your choices are a cord, a motorized blind or a retractable cord. Hunter Douglas makes one called Ultra Glide that’s available through custom order. Hunter Douglas also offers products that can be operated via remote control or smartphone. Though motorized blinds are costlier, O’Sullivan notes that in the past few years prices have dropped considerably and technology has improved dramatically, making them a viable option for many. Curtains are another safe window treatment option – not to mention a great way to finish a room. “I view drapes as a picture frame to the window,” O’Sullivan says. “If you have a great view, drapes can really

accent that view. They don’t have to block anything.” Stop into the Drapery Street gallery, located at 200 S. Rangeline Rd., Suite 109 in Carmel, and check out all the lift systems on display. You can give them a call at 317-399-1746 or visit them online at DraperyStreet.com.

FLOORING

INDY FLOOR COATING:

A FRESH COAT

Finished Garage Floors are the New Standard by Christy Heitger-Ewing

There was a time when “epoxy” flooring was considered a luxury in garage flooring. Today, full flake broadcast floors are becoming standard in new home construction as the popularity has skyrocketed. “We do epoxy hybrid polymers and polyaspartic concrete coatings for residential, commercial and restoration customers,” says Nick Knight, co-owner of Indy Floor Coating. “Thanks to our skilled and seasoned technicians, we’re able to restore aging, cracked concrete at a fraction of the cost of new concrete, with amazing results.” Family owned and operated since 2008, Indy Floor Coating specializes in beautiful, protective coatings for all concrete surfaces – from upgrading or repairing garage, basement, outdoor and commercial flooring, to creating stunning metallic reflective finishes to enhance any space. They use only industrial-grade coatings for superior

durability and abrasion-resistance. Around this time of year, Knight fields calls from customers looking to redo their garage floors in preparation for graduation parties and other spring soirées. “It’s usually the only space in a home where the floor isn’t finished,” Knight says. “Quite often guests enter and exit a home via the garage. Having a beautiful and inviting space just makes sense.” In addition to the aesthetics, coating the floor protects your investment in your concrete, prevents cracking and pitting (common from road salt), is easy to clean and is maintenance-free. “All the gunk that gets on the floor during the winter can be squeegeed out, making the surface shiny all over again,” Knight says. Concrete coating is an economical way to have a big impact on home improvement. For residential, the company coats garages, porches, patios and basements. They also do commercial

kitchens, restaurants, warehouses, athletic venues, automotive and medical and dental facilities. With spring, however, the garage floor business really ramps up. “It’s instant gratification when you get your garage floor done,” Knight says. “It’s kind of like after you’ve painted a room and then ask yourself why you didn’t do it sooner.” Indy Floor Coating is located in Fishers. For more information, call 317-430-0851 or visit them online at indyfloorcoating.com.

STONE ARTISANS:

Creating a

Marvelous Master Bath

by Suzanne Huntzinger / photos by Angela Jackson and Chatham Hills

When it’s time to “unplug” and unwind, your master bedroom is a sanctuary and place to escape. Flowing from the master bedroom, your master bath should have the same relaxing effect. You can create a magnificent retreat in your master bath whether your budget allows for a splurge to create a spa-like environment or not. With a variety of options, you can choose the best one to give you an elegant and peaceful atmosphere. “Light” or white surfaces have become a popular trend for the master bath. If that sounds surprising to you, be assured, there’s a reason so many have gravitated to white. “This color palate extends the space and makes it feel larger,” says Cory Kroger, President and CEO of Stone Artisans. “It’s crisp, clean and elegant.” You can choose from options in natural stone such as marble, granite, quartzite or even engineered quartz products in a variety of price points to achieve the look you want. “You can make it look luxurious yet comfortable by adding simple touches like an under-mount sink for simple, clean lines,” Kroger adds. “Or you can add detailed or scrolled edges to the countertop to enhance the space.” Adding a few other details to the master bath, such as breaking up countertop sections, will add dimension to the space. We do this by changing the depth of cabinetry followed by the countertop. “When you have a long vanity, it’s a great way to achieve this while adding interest and character,” Kroger says. “It looks clean, yet the overall effect is plush, warm and comfortable.” Another way to connect the space in the master bath is by using the same countertop material throughout. “The tub and shower area provide a great opportunity to create consistency and flow,” Kroger says. This will also simplify the selection process as the space is being created. Start planning your luxurious, spa-like master bath retreat today. THE BAER MINIMALIST:

5 QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN

Decluttering this Spring by Maria Baer

Spring has sprung, which might mean you are feeling a bit antsy to declutter your home. As a professional organizer, I often help clients make decisions about what to keep and what to donate as we work to whip their space into shape. If you are playing Tetris with the contents of your pantry or have found that your master closet is about to burst, here are some tried and true questions to consider when decluttering.

DO I STILL LOVE THIS ITEM? Fill your home with items that put a huge smile on your face and part ways with those that no longer fit your lifestyle. DO I STILL HAVE A USE FOR THIS ITEM? Pass along items you are saving for “someday” — especially if you haven’t touched them in a year or could borrow from a friend. DO I STILL NEED THIS ITEM? Anything expired should be disposed. Take a peek at the contents of your pantry and medicine cabinet to start. Also consider duplicates. Once you’ve upgraded an item, donate the original. IS HOLDING ONTO THIS ITEM CAUSING ME STRESS? If you’ve got a feeling of guilt weighing you down for not using an item, or maintaining it is causing you to waste time, don’t feel bad about passing it along to someone who could put it to use today. COULD SOMEONE IN MY COMMUNITY BENEFIT FROM IT? One of the best parts of helping people get organized is finding community groups that can put donated items straight into the hands of those in need. What is BAGI? The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) is proud to partner with Haven as our official industry publication. BAGI’s mission is to promote, educate and network along with providing advocacy and meaningful services to benefit its members and the new-home building industry. BAGI exists so that members of the residential construction industry and related businesses across the Greater Indianapolis nine-county region can conduct their business efficiently and ethically to provide the community with reliable, safe, affordable residential construction

President’s Message New homes are in high demand. That demand currently surpasses the available existing homes inventory in nearly every county of Central Indiana. While this should be great news in the world of new construction, workforce shortages are limiting our region from being able to reach its fullest growth potential. According to the Associated General Contractors of America, “Nearly 80% of construction businesses are struggling to fill skilled labor positions,” which is hindering our businesses from being able to keep up with the demand of our market. A wide range of professions are available within our industry – many which offer significant opportunities for advancement and high earning potential. That is why BAGI has joined forces with the Indiana Construction Roundtable Foundation and the Indiana Builders Association to create ‘Build Your Future Indiana’ – a program designed to help create awareness and promote all that the construction industry has to offer in order to recruit the next generation of bright, young talent. We strive to eliminate stigmas of working in the industry and show that construction isn’t all about hammers and nails. CONCRETE CAREERS

CUSTOM CONCRETE:

A Solid Career by Courtney Walker

Jobs. It’s a buzz word in nearly every industry. One local concrete business is going the extra mile to create excitement about careers in the construction industry. For starters, they are intentionally seeking opportunities to educate the youth of Central Indiana on construction jobs and have conversations with those 15 to 17-yearolds who might be thinking, “college might not be for me.” “Custom Concrete, our partners and the trade community as a whole has been presented with a tremendous opportunity to encourage, train and develop a new generation of laborers,” says Jason Ells, Senior Vice President of Custom Concrete. “There are so many kids, looking for hope, a career that they can hang their hat on and at the same time, there are so many employers looking for these kids. We just need to connect the dots.” One Custom Concrete employee, Jeff Wheeler, shared his journey from being a young boy who dreamt of working with equipment and through a career fair, he is now actually living his dream as a tradesman with Custom Concrete. “As I grew older, I found myself reading magazines and books about heavy machinery. I wanted to be able to describe and identify each piece of equipment. I wanted to be an expert,” says Wheeler. “Each day, I learn something new and I’ve developed a sense of pride and accomplishment in my work.” Not only is Custom Concrete Indiana’s “Destination Employer”, they also stand behind their work as Central Indiana’s quality concrete contractor. They have an inspiring presence in the community and Greater Indianapolis building market. As a family-owned and operated company of 50 years, their clients (ranging from residential to commercial contractors) continue to depend on the expertise of Custom Concrete because so much depends on getting it right and they will continue to hold this mission and purpose high. The end result to the investment in the right tradesman is extremely valuable. “We are finding our future right here in Indiana, but it takes time to identify the right people. We show them the work our teams do, day in and day out, and the pride and satisfaction in a job well done – success built with two hands,” Ells says. MAINTENANCE & RESTORATION

WATERGATE ROOFING:

Thawing Out: Spring is the Perfect Time for a Roof Clean-Up by Christy Heitger-Ewing

ICE DAMS are an ice build-up on roofs that may cause water damage to the building and contents if the water leaks through. This is a big issue for homes in the Midwest that have low sloped roofs.

With mild temperatures just around the corner, now is the perfect time to do some early spring cleanup regarding roof issues. In January, a customer called Millie Hindes, owner of Watergate Roofing, and told her that his pipes had frozen because of a stretch of bitter cold temperatures. Hindes found that the customer’s pipes were not insulated, which caused them to freeze, collect moisture, condense and then leak through the ceiling. “People need to be sure to install insulated flex pipes,” Hindes says. “This is true for bathroom and kitchen exhaust vents as well.” Ice dams are another huge issue –

especially for homes in the Midwest that have low sloped roofs. An ice dam is an ice build-up on roofs that may cause water damage to the building and contents if the water leaks through. “Ice and water melts into the gutters, then backs up underneath the shingles,” Hindes says. “It can also happen around other areas that have flashing like chimneys and pipe boots and where the roof meets the wall – especially if there is no ice and water shield.” Wind storms contribute to tree limbs and branches falling onto roofs, which can make divots in shingles. Wind can also break the seal of shingles and possibly even lift them. But all these

issues can be addressed in the spring. “This winter has been quiet for me, so that generally means my spring and summer will be crazy busy,” Hindes says. For more information, visit watergateroofing.com or call 317-771-5489.

HOME REALTY

9 Ways CENTURY 21 SCHEETZ:

to Prepare Your Home for a Spring Listing by Phil Hotle

2 0 H AV E N

Before you put your home on the market, you may want to think about enhancing your curb appeal. Here are several tips to improve the look of your home and whip your home into shape and wow potential buyers. Buyers are looking for the best, so a home for sale can easily slip through the cracks if it’s not in pristine condition.

1. PAINT THE FRONT DOOR,

TRIM AND SHUTTERS Painting your home can add brightness and revive your house. Pick a bold color that makes your house stick out but make sure to match it to the rest of the colors on your home. Properly prep all surfaces before you paint to get great results that will last for years to come.

Buyers are looking for the best, so a home for sale can easily slip through the cracks if it’s not in pristine condition. 6. INSTALL NEW HOUSE NUMBERS

If your house has old or faded numbers, replace them with new numbers to spruce up the entrance. Try to match your new numbers with the finish that is on your exterior light fixtures.

7. PLANT A TREE

2. IMPROVE YOUR LANDSCAPING

Curb appeal is crucial to a good first impression, so make sure your home’s lawn is immaculate. Mow the lawn, prune the bushes, weed the garden and plant flowers.

3. CLEAN THE OUTSIDE

A sloppy exterior will make buyers think you slacked on interior maintenance as well.

4. MAKE REPAIRS You want your home to be in the best condition possible. Take care of major defects like broken windows or a leaky roof that could discourage buyers. 5. UPGRADE YOUR MAILBOX

It doesn’t matter if you have a mailbox by the road or mounted to your house. Adding a new one can add curb appeal. Make sure that you follow the regulations of the city you live in.

Planting a tree is one of the most common ways to add curb appeal to your home. Before you plant a tree, consider how big the tree will get and how it will affect your home. If you have enough space, try planting two trees to frame your house or entryway.

8. BUY A NEW

WELCOME MAT Let buyers know they’re invited into your home.

9. INSTALL FLOWER

BOXES If your house is lacking color, try adding flower boxes. Install them on the front porch railings and below windows. Also, consider buying container gardens in pots and placing them on your front steps or porch. When you’re ready to list your home, email me at photle@c21scheetz.com or give me a call at 317-919-8504. You can also visit us online at century21scheetz.com/photle.

With the growing popularity of outdoor living spaces, merging indoor and outdoor spaces is a must no matter the size of the home. If you are yearning and dreaming of a new deck, screened in patio or other

outdoor structure, choosing a builder with decades of experience and a reputation for quality, Gettum Associates is the solution. Gettum Associates, a fullservice, design/build remodel contractor has operated in the same building for more than 30 years. The family owned business is operated by Phil and Jason Gettum, says second generation owner Jason Gettum. Gettum knows that an addition to your home, whether indoors or outdoors, is an investment. So, they provide an in-house designer to help determine the best

design that will complement your home’s exterior. “Our goal is to make it blend in and make it look like it has always been there,” Gettum says. The benefit Gettum shares to having a designer on staff is that it will save their clients time and money because they do not have to wait for answers from an outside contractor. With 3D capabilities, the designer can provide a very realistic picture of the end product, and if the client changes their mind, the process is streamlined because the staff is right there. Each project has a designer

and project coordinator to ensure that the end result is what was promised. And because Gettum is committed to quality, they offer a fiveyear warranty that is standard with any remodel project they do, which offers peace of mind that the job will be done to their customers’s satisfaction. “Ultimately, we are looking to earn your trust and business for the long haul,” Gettum says. INDIANA DESIGN CENTER:

D ES I G N I N S P I R AT I O N All Under One Roof by Christy Heitger-Ewing

THE INDIANA DESIGN CENTER is your one-stop design resource with 15 showrooms, 20 designers, an art gallery and artist studios all under one roof and open to the public.

If you’re looking to transform a single room of your house or your entire home, the Indiana Design Center is your one-stop resource. With 15 showrooms, 20 designers, an art gallery and artist studios all under one roof, it’s an awesome resource that features the latest trends in home furnishings, kitchen and bath, lighting, window coverings, beds and mattresses, fireplaces, tile, stone, art and one-of-a-kind décor. “You can pick out your tile and granite, your faucets and design your draperies within the showrooms then have your kitchen designer down the hall,” says Andrea Kleymeyer, Indiana Design Center marketing director. “Here we have a great collaborative, synergistic community.” Indiana is one of fewer than 20 states with a dedicated design center. But unlike many traditional design centers that are trade-only, this 80,000-square

foot facility is open to the public. There’s a common misconception that people think they have to have a badge or come in with a designer in order to utilize the resources but that’s not the case. In this hybrid design center, retail showrooms sell directly to the consumer among a few trade-only showrooms. “This is the best place to find inspiration because customers can see the latest products, trends and resources,” Kleymeyer says. “It’s a great first step to just come in and browse. Then when the rubber’s hitting the road on your project, you’ll have your bases covered.” The majority of the businesses are Indiana-based and independently owned. Therefore, in many cases customers are working directly with an owner of a business. They do, however, have access to national brands as well. “If you see something in Architectural Digest but you’re interested in things

that are made in Indiana or crafted by Indiana artisans, you can find those options here,” Kleymeyer adds. When you first arrive at the Indiana Design Center, stop by the concierge desk for directions and personal guidance to make the most of your visit. Located at 200 S. Rangeline Road, the Indiana Design Center offers tours, events and workshops for the public to learn from design professionals. To see a schedule, visit indianadesigncenter.com or call 317-569-5975.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

BURTNER ELECTRIC:

Outdoor Lighting is More Important Than You Think by Courtney Walker

As spring quickly approaches, our home improvement desires take a turn and head to the outdoors. Homeowners frequently forget how important exterior illumination can be for them, their family and guests. From the safety aspect to functionality and aesthetics, we want to share a few of the options for your home’s outdoor lighting. Pulling in the driveway, you might first notice the lighting connected to a home. Fixtures such as entry or garage sconces, hanging chandeliers, recessed cans and flood lights are either an entry recognition or security feature. We have all heard a well-lit home deters crime.

“Outdoor security lighting is no longer just an item that you should do when you get around to it, it is now a vital part of the protection of your home and family,” says David Burtner, owner of Burtner Electric. When weighing electrical options, be sure to consider a timed system for the entry fixtures and a motion sensor for security fixtures, such as flood lights. Also, never forget to illuminate your house numbers in case of an emergency. Secondary to the home’s attached lighting, you might notice landscape illumination, which again, can be both aesthetically pleasing and a wayfinding feature. “Landscape lighting extends the time you can enjoy your yard,” Burtner says. “You spend money to landscape your yard, and if you don’t put in the right landscape lighting, you miss out on the opportunity to enjoy your beautiful yard in the evening hours. “ From paths, step risers, pool decks, to trees – walk your property and stand at unique views to determine where landscape lighting might best suit your needs. OASIS OUTDOOR LIVING & LANDSCAPES:

A Secret Recipe for Success by Suzanne Huntzinger

O

asis Outdoor Living & Landscapes has been turning outdoor places into dream spaces for more than a decade now. But that’s not what sets them apart from other outdoor living companies. “Anyone can come to your home and build something great in your back-yard,” says Rob Delaby, owner of Oasis Outdoor Living & Landscapes. “I show people they can trust me to create a space that will make them happy,” he says. “I know it’s a big investment, but it’s my job to show them they can spend their lives living, making memories with their families at home. It’s rewarding when I hear customers tell me they don’t even need to leave home because their backyard is like being at a resort. “We’re good stewards of your investment,” Delaby adds. “We’re going to help you make the most of your budget, and we’ll do it with honesty and integrity.” With more than 20 years in landscaping and construction, Delaby along with his staff, approach every job with the objective of taking care of the customer and optimizing their space to reach its full potential, as if it were their own backyard. The Indy native, family man and father of two worked multiple landscape jobs throughout high school and college and built homes with his grandfather in Springfield, IL. After college, Delaby started his career in restaurant management, and he quickly moved to brand management for a coffee roasting company to which he remains closely connected. During that time, Delaby even took the time to supplement his food knowledge by getting a culinary degree through the Culinary Institute of America. He was also part of Rob Delaby, Owner, Oasis Outdoor Living a team in Seattle who helped develop the & Landscapes Super Automatic Espresso Machine.

“Rob and the Oasis team took the time to make sure the project was done right. They care about the process and outcome. We love our outdoor space, we use it to have family and friends over and relax at home.” – DAVE SMILEY Z99.5 radio host and Oasis Outdoor customer

“Rob was phenomenal. His customer service is great and I’m looking forward to using him again in the future.” – GRAHAM RAHAL IndyCar driver and Oasis Outdoor customer

“I’ve known Rob for more than 15 years. He is like family, except on the golf course where we get pretty competitive. I don’t know that there is a guy you could laugh with or trust more.” – KRISTI LEE News Director, The Bob and Tom Show and Oasis Outdoor customer

3 4 H AV E N

Although the restaurant and coffee industries don’t share a lot in common with landscaping, Delaby yearned to get back into the residential construction arena after college. “I traveled a lot. Free time with my family took on a deeper meaning for me,” he says. “I realized I wanted to spend it at home with my family, just like everyone else wants.” When the opportunity arose for Delaby to purchase a landscaping business, he dove all the way in just like with all his other ventures. Drawing upon his lessons from culinary school and the lessons his grandfather taught him when he was in the construction business, he developed his own special recipe for success. He set out to create the best team to build the best spaces possible for his customers and so there could be no better place to spend time than right in your backyard. From the beginning, Delaby established a family atmosphere with his staff and customers, never failing to show he cared about their homes and loved ones. “I just want to be the best boss I could be,” he says. “It is about taking care of people whether it is your employees or customers – everything else falls into place.” Through the roller coaster ride of difficult economic times that started just a year after he bought the business, Delaby weathered it all by capitalizing on a critical component. From the first step when Delaby and his staff meet with a customer, Oasis Outdoor delivers on its promises. Offering unique and creative designs, Oasis Outdoor personalizes each project to the client’s space and lifestyle. Putting his whole heart and soul into each job, Delaby turned what one customer calls his virtually non-functional space into an incredible outdoor entertaining and gathering area that they’re able to use year-round. “Even when we made some minor changes to the plans, they happily complied,” The Meier family says. Oasis Outdoor has designed and built amazing backyards for local celebrities and business leaders like Pippa Mann, Graham Rahal, Dave Smiley, Kristi Lee and more. They all agree about the unbeatable customer service. Delaby walks the customer through the entire process and makes it a point to visit job sites in progress to personally ensure the job is being completed to his standards and the customer’s. The Huckabee family’s experience is a classic example of Oasis Outdoor’s winning, signature customer service. “We obtained three estimates for our project,” the family says. “ The owner, Rob, was the only one of the three that actually came out to the house

“I highly recommend Oasis Outdoor Living & Landscapes for their quality and integrity. Rob’s relationship with me, our race team and his passion for others speaks volumes about who he is.” – PIPPA MANN IndyCar driver and Oasis Outdoor customer

to see the area, obtain measurements and provide an estimate along with a design diagram of the project. His pricing was competitive, but what really set his team apart was when I wasn’t completely satisfied on the design, his designer came to the house with Rob, and we worked on the design until we obtained perfection. I was simply amazed at his team that completed our hardscape. They worked with such great care and precision to ensure that every stone was laid correctly. They were so professional, courteous and dedicated to getting it right. As with any big project, there are always minor things that you dis-cover after the completion of a project. Oasis Outdoor responded very promptly to correct very minor issues.” Delaby sets the bar high with his level of dedication and involvement with his customers. “I’m invested in my customers’ investments. I care about what they care about,” he says. “I love to see them happy, enjoying their own space while they host backyard barbecues or neighborhood pool parties. It’s their space to celebrate, entertain, grill out or relax. They deserve it. They’ve earned it.” Delaby shares his caring and giving spirit with the community as well. Through a friend, he became involved in Twisted Pink, an organization dedicated to improving and extending the lives of late-stage breast cancer patients and their families by funding research. Delaby began meeting survivors and has been dedicated to the cause ever since. He also supports the Central Indiana Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and was awarded the 2015-2016 “Pink Tie Guy of the Year” award. Delaby doesn’t just write a check, he pours his heart and soul into the cause and incorporates working to help these organizations in his everyday life. But beyond building his business, Delaby loves to connect people with each other. “It’s important to me to spend time with customers and friends socially to connect them with each other,” he says. “Together, we can make great things happen.” You’ll want to transform your backyard too once you see all the amazing things Oasis Outdoor can do. Outdoor Luxury BY NATUREWORKS+:

The New Definition of Outdoor Living Spaces by Christy Heitger-Ewing

STAY HOME. BE MOVED. Create your personal definition of luxury with pleasing privacy, a low-maintenance lifestyle and restful outdoor living.

Who doesn’t love a glorious outdoor living space? One complete with patios, pergolas, fire features and grill stations. Though these structures and elements have been the primary luxury components for the past decade, Randy Sorrell, founder of Surroundings by NatureWorks, encourages consumers to think more comprehensively when it comes to trends in outdoor living space. “Ask yourself what intrinsic issues are driving comfort and luxury,” says Sorrell, who believes that the hot trends of today are not, in fact, trends at all but rather movements that will persevere for decades, reshaping more broadly how we live. Sorrell suggests consumers contemplate a new definition of luxury – one that asks the best way to create pleasing privacy, a low-maintenance lifestyle and restful outdoor living without the worries of third-degree sunburns.

“Sure, those strategies often employ patios, pergolas and grill stations, but they are much more comprehensive, studied and planned,” says Sorrell, noting that such considerations shape the way couples and families choose to entertain. The launching point for developing these luxury components often starts with connecting with the right professionals, developing a design that reflects specific living habits and family structure and establishing the material pallet from there. Sorrell believes one of the other emerging movements involves outdoor living furniture and the advent of technology as it invades our lifestyle. “Balancing quality and too much technology will be a fun issue to explore,” says Sorrell, acknowledging that it’s an exhilarating time to be in the outdoor living business. “We simply can’t imagine

the new materials and tech advances being introduced that will drive how we live.” Perhaps the tag line for Sorrell’s company says it best: Stay home. Be moved. Visit Surroundings by NatureWorks online at choosesurroundings.com or call 317-575-0482.

“Let us help you before you even start buying pieces of what you think you might need, and we can sit down and lend our expertise for whatever you’re trying to do.” – RAY RICE Digital Sight & Sound

What happens if you want iPhone-integrated technology in your home but don’t have the time or energy to handle the planning, setup and installation yourself? Carmel-based Digital Sight & Sound has been providing the solution to such a dilemma for nearly 20 years. “If you want do-it-yourself products but you don’t want to do it yourself, that’s where we come in,” says owner Ray Rice. Since 1999, Digital Sight & Sound has specialized in the custom installation of audio, video, lighting and security systems for home and business, and Rice says while such technology is more affordable than ever before, the time required to plan, customize and install such systems remains substantial. “Being able to turn lights off from anywhere in the house, or having a thorough alarm system – the technology is cool enough and affordable enough for many homeowners, but if you have kids and you’re busy in your job, you might only have three or four hours free all week,” Rice says. “Do you really want to allocate that time to reading manuals and figuring out how to install your new cameras?” Rice says those interested in incorporating a new alarm system, audio-video setup, or even an automated thermostat, are encouraged to visit his Carmel facility for a full consultation. “Let us help you before you even start buying pieces of what you think you might need, and we can sit down and lend our expertise for whatever you’re trying to do,” he says. “For example, there are about 20 different digital and iPhone security products out there, and one might be a better fit than the others for your situation. So, we can apply our knowledge to find the best fit for you.” For additional details on services, support info, or to make an appointment, call Digital Sight & Sound at 317-848-0101 or visit them online at dssindy.com.

ALLISONVILLE NURSERY GARDEN & HOME:

GARDEN GURUS by Jon Shoulders

As springtime begins to make itself known, many homeowners will attempt to figure out how best to spruce up their front yards and back patios to impress neighbors, family and friends. Allisonville Nursery, Garden & Home stocks one of the largest selections of indoor and outdoor flowers, plants and accessories in the U.S., and can make building out your garden easy – even if you’re getting a late start on plantings. “If you missed the chance to get bulbs in the ground last fall, you may be wishing you had some spring flowers to expect, but you can get that with container gardens even in early spring,” says Scott Bardash, marketing director at Allisonville Nursery. “You can get started with container gardens earlier than you can get plantings in the ground – potted on a porch or anywhere around your yard. Pansies, primrose, snapdragons and tulips are great for that.” Founded in 1976, Allisonville Nursery’s

7,500-square-foot garden store and gift shop includes traditional and organic fertilizers, fountains, containers, home décor accessories and more. The expert staff regularly holds gardening workshops and events onsite, which Bardash says typically sell out within 12 hours of being posted on the company’s official website. “We have a selection that’s really unmatched anywhere,” Bardash says. “We also keep up with trends. For example, we’re seeing a tremendous push toward native and pollinator-friendly plants, so that’s what we’re going to focus on a lot this year. Indoor gardening with succulents and geraniums is also huge right now, so we’ll be focusing on that as well. Come on in and we’ll take care of you.” Allisonville Nursery, Garden & Home is located at 11405 Allisonville Road in Fishers. HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:

A Breath of Fresh Air More Homeowners Demanding Healthy Air Testing An increasing number of homeowners are looking beyond comfort from their heating and cooling systems as the information about air health becomes more wide-known and technology improves to solve the air quality problems. “More clients are asking us about how we can help solve things like allergy issues and airborne illnesses,” says Brian Schutt, owner at Homesense Heating and Cooling. “It’s exciting that we have real solutions to offer.” One of the biggest advances offered by Homesense is an effective way to sample and test your home’s air quality to understand what issues, largely undetectable otherwise, your home has. “The advanced technology has now become available to home owners through a system like Air Advice Indoor Air Analysis, which will show realtime HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING information about how 317.670.0171 polluted home air might TrustHomesense.com

be. Before this technology, it was largely guesswork by homeowners and air quality professionals,” Schutt says. With a simple testing process, taking 30-60 minutes, the Homesense team is giving peace of mind to homeowners who are concerned about their family’s health. THESE TESTS IDENTIFY: • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) • Airborne particulates and pollens that contribute to allergies and asthma • Home cleaning products and other common household items that pollute indoor air

“Knowing that Central Indiana is in the Top 10 of airborne particulate pollution, with indoor air being up to five times more polluted than outdoor air, health conscious homeowners are demanding to know the details about their air quality in the same way they’d get a blood test during an annual physical,” Schutt adds. For Haven readers, Homesense has agreed to provide this test at no charge during the month of March. Call Homesense today at 317-670-0171 for your free air quality test.

BOLD MOVES

HOW LAYERING A SPACE WITH BOLD PATTERNS & TEXTURES MAKES A STATEMENT by Christy Heitger-Ewing

Many clients who consult with Kristen Moorehouse, principal designer and owner of Ardent Design, are eager to hear all of her creative ideas but are often hesitant to try them out in their own homes. “Sometimes people are scared to pick the bold pattern and commit to it,” Moorehouse says. For those who do, however, they are blown away by the dynamite results. The key, according to Moorehouse, is to not be afraid of pattern and texture because layering is what makes a space more interesting.

“The layered patterns have to be complimentary to each other, scaled properly to the element they are on and placed in a balanced manner in the space,” says Moorehouse, who recently designed a house for someone who was all in when it came to going for the bold. “She told me she wanted something different but didn’t know how to get there, so she trusted me to pull something together for her,” says Moorehouse, who chose horizontal cladding (shiplap) and marble in the bathroom, herringbone brick

on the floor of the sunroom and large-scale grass cloth wallpaper with small-dot print on chairs in the dining room. “The goal of this project was to create something out of the ordinary, and I did that by layering the space with lots of patterns and interesting fabrics,” says Moorehouse, knowing the importance of spreading the love throughout the home when it comes to pattern and texture rather than throwing everything into one room. “Scale will make it or break it,” she adds. “Always look at the big picture rather

than getting caught up on each individual piece. Then, just go for it!” Contact Ardent Design by calling 317-850-6145 or visit them online at ardentinterior.com.

WINDOWS & DOORS

FRANKLIN WINDOW & DOOR:

You Ask, We Answer 4 Questions to Ask When Buying A New Front Door by Cori Brown

Have you been considering a new front door for you home but unsure where to begin? You are not alone. Listed below are some of the top questions we hear every day. 1. HAVE YOU ASKED YOURSELF, HOW MUCH DOES A NEW FRONT DOOR COST? It is a great question and probably one of the most important. A new front door can range anywhere from just under $100 from Lowe’s or Menards to upwards of $25,000 or more for a custom wood entry system. This broad range makes it challenging to budget for your own home. Some considerations to keep in mind when budgeting for your own front door is the size of the door. Do you have a single entry door or a door with sidelites and a transom? The bigger your door, the more expensive it will be. The glass you select also plays a significant part in the cost with decorative glass being more expensive than clear glass. To help you budget for your new front door, here are some ranges that should provide a good starting point. • Single entry door – $1,000-$4,000 • Entry door with sidelites or a double (French) door –

$3,500-$9,000

• Entry door with sidelites and a transom – $6,000-

$15,000

• Fully custom entry systems – $12,500 and up

4 2 H AV E N

2. WHAT TYPE OF FRONT DOOR SHOULD I CHOOSE? That depends on what is most important to you. Is energy efficiency your top concern? Maybe a maintenance free option is what you are looking for. No matter what your wish list contains, there is a material that would be a perfect fit for you and your home. Lets look at the pros & cons of the most common materials available.

WOOD Pros: Beautiful. Endless options, Fully Custom, broad price range. Cons: Requires maintenance, natural material that expands and contracts depending on outside temperature, moderate on energy efficiency.

FIBERGLASS Pros: Energy efficient, low maintenance, lots of design options, broad range of price points. Cons: More limiting than wood on customization, different levels of quality available, which can be confusing.

STEEL Pros: Cost effective, energy efficient. Cons: Can dent easily, which leads to rust if not maintained, limited customization.

3. SHOULD I GO WITH A STANDARD SIZED DOOR OR CUSTOM? This question causes more confusion than probably any of the others. The reason being is that many door manufacturers use slightly different sizing for their so called “standard size.” Just because your door is a “standard size” in one brand, it may not be in another. 4. I LIKE THE PICTURE OF THE DOOR I SAW ON HOUZZ, BUT DOES IT FIT THE LOOK OF MY HOME? Fortunately, the advancements in technology have helped us with this question. We can now superimpose new door styles onto photos of your home to help you visualize what your new door would look like. This is a great option if you are looking to completely change the style, color or layout of your front door. Whether you already know what you want in your new front door or you are just beginning your journey, Franklin Window & Door is here to help. HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA:

Who’s Ready for Spring Cleaning? by Christy Heitger-Ewing

4 4 H AV E N

It’s that time of year when the days are getting longer and so are the to-do lists. Home Artisans of Indiana is your one-stop shop for all kinds of spring cleaning. James Spink, owner of Bin There Dump That, finds that spring really launches their busy season as homeowners emerge from hibernation, eager to purge their homes of the junk that has accumulated over time.

“It’s like, the groundhog went away, spring is here, let’s get rolling,” says Spink, who deposits a small dumpster at customers’ homes and leaves it for a period of seven days, enabling homeowners to fill it up at their leisure. He then returns a week later to haul the junk away. Those who want help with decluttering can enlist the skills of Maria Baer, residential organizer at The Baer Minimalist. “People call me when they have things on their to-do list that they really want to get done but don’t want to spend their time doing,” Baer says. These things may involve

organizing a pantry, decluttering a closet or seasonally rotating clothing. Helping her clients find great spots to donate items, such as shelters and churches is also a big part of her job. “Often people feel guilty letting go of something if they spent a lot of money on it or rarely used it,” Baer says. “If they know the item is going directly into the hands of somebody who needs it, they feel good.” Once the clutter is gone comes the deep clean – a necessary but often odious task. “We definitely have a spike in calls when spring hits,” says Christina Garten, owner of Christina’s Complete Clean. “No one wants to spend their weekends cleaning, especially when the weather breaks.” According to Garten, spring cleaning is an ancestral instinct that dates way back and is all about growth and renewal. “There’s nothing better than

“Cleaning the AC and duct work isn’t just about the preparation for the heat of summer,” Schutt says. “It has a dramatic impact on air quality and the health of your family.” Schutt notes that it’s wise to jump on these spring cleaning services early in the year since companies get busy as the weather warms. “If you’re not on top of it, before you know it, your spring clean has become a summer clean,” Schutt says. Within a long and ever-growing list of capabilities including residential and commercial renovations, new construction, in-house custom cabinetry fabrication and community revitalization projects, Emergent Construction holds a strong suite close at heart. And that is reviving some of Indianapolis’ oldest and most prestigious homes in the MeridianKessler neighborhood. Emergent recently finished this 90-yearold historic home on Meridian Street. “Our customer had a vision of enjoying an enlarged kitchen floor plan, a revitalized laundry room and a spa-like master bathroom update,” said Emergent CEO, Matt Troyer. “When we get the privilege to help reinvent a home like this in a historic part of our city, we take pride is assessing the original architecture and providing our clients with an updated plan that sticks true to the period it was originally built for in order to seamlessly blend the old with the new.” A talented team of craftsmen and designers at Emergent carefully selected styles and finishes that reflected the home’s natural bones, but met the needs of a modern day family. Though the structure might have been 90 years old, all of the amenities that a family looks for today to meet their lifestyle were included in this drastic facelift. One unique feature of Emergent Construction is the fact that even though they’re a general contractor, they also have a custom cabinet shop working directly in-line with project managers and designers, all housed under one roof in their new headquarters in the up-andcoming Kennedy/King neighborhood. “That’s different from a lot of builders,” Troyer adds. “Our craftsmen do all the finish carpentry in-house versus hiring subcontractors. Clients appreciate that local craftsmen touch, and that’s the vibe we’re trying to put out.” If you have a residential or commercial project that you’re ready to get started, call Emergent Construction at 317-572-7227 or visit them online at emergent-group.com.

APPLIANCES

FERGUSON SHOWROOMS:

HOW TO SELECT APPLIANCES Whether remodeling an entire room or looking to add a single upgrade, it’s important to select the best products that will last for years to come. One of the best investments you can make is in your appliances. With a vast array of choices on the market today, it is important to consider your options and select appliances that provide the features and style you want and will last for years to come. TREND WATCH

Today’s kitchens are high-tech, colorful and all about convenience. Consider the following appliances for your next upgrade. • Professional grade quality for the home:

Whether you’re a budding chef or culinary maestro, now more than ever before you can enjoy the benefits of commercial grade kitchen fixtures and appliances - without them necessarily having to look that way. Approachable pro style products are elegant and understated to integrate seamlessly with a variety of design choices, while maintaining high-powered performance and hard-working functionality.

• Induction cooking: Induction cooking

relies on magnetic technology to heat the cookware and uses far less electricity than standard cooktops and ranges. The heating response isn’t just fast – it is instant! You can boil a pot of water in three minutes. And because induction cooking only heats the pot and the area directly under it, the surrounding area is safe to the touch even when in use.

• Color in unexpected places: Many

homeowners keep their kitchen looking fresh and vibrant by adding a pop of color to an accent wall or by selecting colorfully coordinated dishes, pots and pans and small appliances. Building on this trend, a pop of color in a non-traditional space such as the exterior door of a range or the interior of a refrigerator is a fun and unexpected design detail.

ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF COMMERCIAL GRADE APPLIANCES DESIGNED FOR THE HOME.

From cooking up culinary creations to storing fresh ingredients, appliance purchases are an investment in productivity. Don’t simply replace an appliance, select an option that is larger, faster and stylish enough to meet your needs for years to come. KITCHENS

ACo:

Connecting in the Kitchen – 6 Simple Tips by Courtney Walker

Naturally the kitchen is a space where we gather. We have all been there – cleaned the entire house, had the entire family room ready for guests and the majority end up in the kitchen. You might be wondering how you can take advantage of this natural connection place on a daily basis and ACo has some tips.

1. Consider your working triangle between

the kitchen, sink and stovetop. Ultimately this provides an efficiency while cooking, making the experience more enjoyable. If your kids love to participate, pull up their kitchen prep stool next to the sink and have them learn and enjoy cooking skills with you.

2. If your child enjoys doing homework or

chatting with you during dinner prep, plan to have countertop, bar top or banquette seating within the kitchen.

3. Although division is nice in some aspects

of the home, the kitchen is the perfect space for a bright, open concept. When tidying

up from a dinner party, guests can still visit with you while enjoying the Saturday night game in the family room.

4. When the kids are not home from sports

yet, but you’d like to keep dinner warm – this is the perfect opportunity for warming drawers. The appliances come in a variety of finishes to either be disguised or match your other appliance finishes.

5. Natural light and neighborhood or

outdoor views are always an asset in a home – this is no different in the kitchen. From watching your kids play outside to watching those potted herbs in the windowsill grow, windows are a wonderful addition to your kitchen.

6. Ambient and task lighting can set the

mood! So often forgotten, this important selection will complete your kitchen design. Morning or night, dimmers and under cabinet lighting will help the sleepy walk to the coffee pot or the calming dim of an island pendant will help you wash the last dish.

If you are ready to make those special memories and start connecting more with family and friends in the kitchen, be sure to keep your local kitchen and bath remodel company, ACo in mind. Simply put, they are experts at helping you “Love where you live.” Give ACo a call at 317-688-1872 or visit them online at liveaco.com to schedule your first design consultation.

STORAGE & ORGANIZATION

TAILORED LIVING:

A Stylish Surface ADDING PERSONALIZATION TO YOUR GARAGE FLOOR by Courtney Walker

Many homeowners use the garage not only as a place to park vehicles but as an extended storage and functional space for their home. Out of convenience (or out of sight, out of mind), it often becomes a dumping ground for tools, sports equipment, outdoor equipment and so much more. Tailored Living featuring Premier Garage is your local garage organization and floor specialist, ready to make your garage functional and stylish. In addition to garage organization systems, Tailored Living is also proud to offer a large variety of garage flooring solutions to complete your home investment. With a variety of colors, textures and treatments – clients are able to coordinate their garage floor with other finishes such as wall, cabinet, countertop colors or even add personalization such as a favorite sports team. Ultimately,

garage flooring by Tailored Living offers a layered safety and aesthetic, protecting the surface from heavy and high traffic the garage endures on a daily basis. “Our most popular flooring solution is the Premier One decorative texture floor coating, which we recommend for most residential garages,” says owner Jon Elliott. The garage resurfacing and treatment process is actually a very simple two-day process. “Floor preparation is a critical part of the installation process,” Elliott says. “We grind the surface of the concrete to open it up and allow our coating to bond properly. A dust-collection vacuum system is used to keep concrete dust to a minimum. We then apply a base coat and a full layer of resin chips. The chips provide an added layer of durability and

a slip-resistant texture. The floor cures overnight, and a top coat is applied on the second day.” Within 24 hours, the floor has cured and is ready for use. If you are ready to get your garage in tip-top shape, remember Tailored Living. Get started by visiting them online at tailoredliving.com or give them a call at 317-842-4272.

POLISH INTERIOR AND ART DESIGN:

At Work With An Artist by Courtney Walker

“The only thing better than a good piece of art is a good piece of cheese,” says Lead Artist of Polish Interior and Art Design, Christina Greive, while finishing up a custom painting for a client. When Christina enrolled in art school, her original plan did not include creating a design firm. Fast forward 10 years and now she’s co-owner of Polish Interiors, creating custom art, networking with other local artists and expanding her personalized touch into the design of every client’s home and business. If you were to take a tour on the artwork of Greive, you would see an array of mediums, colors, sizes and inspiration. “My ultimate goal is to create a work of art that combines a client’s unique style, my aesthetic and at least an inkling of sentimental value. Recently, I completed a ‘wine and canvas’ project in which a family of five came to our studio and each created an abstract work of art. Canvases and color options were prepped to insure a cohesive design would prevail, but honestly the sentiment associated with the end product was what made this my favorite project thus far.” Greive says. For your next custom art or interior design need, Polish Interior and Art Design has the experience and excitement to collaborate with you, your family or business! CUSTOM LIVING:

DESIGNED for YOUR LIFESTYLE by Christy Heitger-Ewing

The design team at Custom Living, Inc. provides their clients with “a consistent predictable process in an unpredictable industry,” says Director of Internal Operations, Marissa Doner. “We strive to deliver a comprehensive, detail-oriented pre-construction process to help our clients navigate the decisions ted to pricing, floor plans, necessary for a successful project with fees being determined. fewer surprises.” When a client first begins working with Custom Living, the focus is on how their space can be better utilized to functionally and architecturally improve their lives. “We present ideas and solutions based on the customer’s wants and needs

combined with our team’s decades of design and construction experience,” Doner says. “Once concepts and preliminary pricing is approved, we move into our full service planning phase.” This includes partnering our Selections Coordinator, Shelby Black, to assist our clients in the process of picking out all the cabinets, countertops, plumbing fixtures, paint, tile, carpets and hardwoods etc., needed to meet their individual styles and complete the space. While all of these puzzle pieces are being fitted together, pre-construction meetings and field walks by our construction team are being completed in the background.

“You will have multiple team members working with you throughout the project from start to finish while maintaining constant communication with the initial Architectural Designer. We don’t have a hand off at any time to ensure the initial expectations are carried through to completion and move in day” says Doner, noting that clear open lines of communication, have been the key to successfully reducing the stresses of remodeling and building.
