CLEANING & HOUSEKEEPING

CHRISTINA’S COMPLE TE CLE AN:

A Clean, Smart Work of Art: THE CREW AT CHRISTINA’S COMPLETE CLEAN ARE RELIABLE, RESPONSIBLE & EDUCATED by Christy Heitger-Ewing

8 H AV E N

“It really is so important that you know the proper questions to ask when hiring a cleaning company. People often ask the basic ones to find out if they are bonded or insured, but there are some other pertinent things to ask, too.” – CHRISTINA GARTEN owner, Christina’s Complete Clean

Locally grown and woman-owned, Christina’s Complete Clean, which has been in business for 13 years, recently added another element to their already high-quality service. They just started to host a twice-a-year housecleaning technician course in which housekeepers from around the region can come to gain knowledge in the industry. “This hands-on course sets us apart from other cleaning services in that we care a great deal about making sure that everyone is up-to-date on information and trends,” says Christina Garten, owner of the company. The two-day course offers instruction on everything from the chemistry of cleaning to an in-depth study on proper cleaning techniques. At the conclusion of the class, participants must pass a 160-question test. This knowledge is important because making one tiny mistake can add up to big bucks. For instance, marble can etch by being exposed to just a little bit of acidity. So, during class, instructors run a drop of vinegar on a marble sample to demonstrate how just one drop can ruin a countertop. Garten is passionate about ensuring that everyone who works for her is not only knowledgeable and experienced in the field but also honest, trustworthy, and responsible. Because sadly, not all cleaning companies have a stringent vetting process. She recently talked with a man who shared how his wife had hired a housecleaning company to come in following his back surgery. When the gal showed up to do the work, the homeowner started making small talk, asking how long she had been with the company. It wasn’t long. In fact, both she and her cleaning partner admitted that they had just been released from jail for armed robbery. “It really is so important that you know the proper questions to ask when hiring a cleaning company,” says Garten. “People often ask the basic ones to find out if they are bonded or insured, but there are some other pertinent things to ask, too.” For instance: Do you bring your own supplies? What type of equipment and chemicals do you use? How many staff members do you have? How many people will typically come to clean my house? Will I get the same person each time? Do you perform background checks? Do you take credits cards? Are your teams okay with pets? Do I have to Christina Garten, owner be home or is it okay if we’re home? How is my information kept safe (e.g., access codes, credit card info, etc.)? If you are interested in joining this dynamite cleaning team or participating in the next housecleaning technician course, contact Garten today. “We are a solid company who is always searching for talented, reliable people,” says Garten. “We are in it to win it, meaning we’re not some fly-by-night company that’s going to fold in a few months. We are proud to serve the Indianapolis area.” CHRISTINA’S COMPLETE CLEAN For more information, call 317-564-4244 or visit 317.564.4244 christinascompleteclean.com. christinascompleteclean.com

DALTILE:

Lavaliere Collection Adds Architectural Movement,

Holiday Sparkle by Matt Keating

1 0 H AV E N

The Lavaliere collection, with its’ unique shapes, geometric visuals, soft lines, and dramatic features, is a great way to add architectural movement in your home says Robin Bradford, a showroom designer for Daltile, the country’s leading manufacturer and distributor of porcelain tile, ceramic tile, and natural tile. One of their most exciting launches this year according to Bradford, is the Lavaliere collection, offering a mix of glamorous marble, paired with antique mirror and metallic elements, mixed together in unique architectural shapes and bold geometrics. There are several options within the series featuring classic, and on trend marbles, such as Carrara White or Calacatta Gold, as well as two types of antique bevel mirror subway tile. “Both options are antiqued, but we have a black antique mirror tile as well,” Bradford notes. “This is a very elegant line.” In addition to those options, the rest of the Lavaliere line uses marble mixed with gold, antique mirror, glass, and even mother of pearl. Featured shapes include hexagon, diamond, brick, arabesque, and other more distinctive organic and architectural styles. All of these options are meant for wall applications, so they are great for a powder bath wall, a backsplash, butler’s pantry, bar, master bath, fireplace, or any sort of accent wall. The Lavaliere collection adds a touch of glitz and glamour perfect for the holidays. “Obviously, you don’t take on a tile project just for the holidays,” Bradford says. “But now is a great time to think about adding a little sparkle to the home.” Visit the Daltile showroom in Fishers to add this dramatic yet elegant accent to your home. the show highlights in the next couple pages, but who helped make it happen. It’s hard to believe that this year as president of BAGI’s board of directors is already coming to a close. What a memorable experience it has been – both challenging and very rewarding! I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people and forming new and hopefully lasting relationships, especially in the transition from the councils to our constituency groups. Working with the BAGI staff has been nothing less than a pleasure. Each person in their own way made my journey so eventful and meaningful. The BAGI organization, my friends, is a well-oiled machine. In my 39 or so years in the industry, I feel like I’ve lived my life so fully through the home building business and I hope to give back what it has given me through the years. I have greatly appreciated this opportunity to serve as president, and I am thrilled to continue to support BAGI through its future endeavors. Bob Sandberg, RLS Building Corp.

FRANKLIN WINDOW & DOOR:

Styles of Exterior Doors Perfect for Any Home

by Christy Heitger-Ewing

When you want a front door that really makes a statement, it’s important to consider all of your options and how it will affect your home’s aesthetic. The team at Franklin Window & Door is here to help make that process easier. When Kate Ellison, Franklin Window & Door’s in-home sales specialist, meets with clients, she uses an iPad door design app that enables homeowners to mix and match different options for their custom door. “They can pick out different door styles, glass, grid patterns, and hardware. They can also paint it, make it look like a wood door, and do stain colors,” explains Ellison. “A visual really helps people get excited.” For instance, say somebody is gravitating toward purchasing a steel contemporary door. Once they can see it against their red brick colonial style house, they recognize that the style doesn’t mesh. “I think people appreciate us taking care of them like that,” says Ellison, who lists five popular styles of exterior doors. 2 0 H AV E N

5

1

MODERN FARMHOUSE

2

TRADITIONAL

Modern farmhouse exterior doors offer a heaping portion of wholesome, hearty style and quality. Options vary from rustic double doors with iron strap hinges and a barn-like aesthetic to more simple panels with large panes of glass separated by slim but solid wood mullions.

If you have a standard sized entryway, you can choose from wood, wood clad, fiberglass, and steel with the options for glass inserts, sidelights, and transoms. Premier manufacturers offer a range of choices, from natural grain to eclectic color palettes. While “traditional” implies a classic style, you can also choose more modern and contemporary doors to complement both your exterior and interior décor.

3

PIVOT

Pivot doors, which rotate on a pivot box (floor) and jam (top) rather than on side hinges as is typical, offer an unconventional, contemporary, bold statement. Not only does this introduce a sleek aesthetic, pivot models are ideal for large entryways. You can even opt for double pivots for door panels that seem almost independent of the frame.

4

CRAFTSMAN

5

OVERSIZED

From ultra-modern to an ageless classic, a Craftsman door works best with Craftsman architecture, allowing their simple, natural charm to shine through. Crafted from hardwood, they may be stained or painted. You also have the option of selecting reproductions made from composite wood or steel for greater durability and protection from the elements.

SCOTT AND CORI BROWN owners, Franklin Window & Door

CUSTOMIZATION IS KEY At Franklin Window & Door, homeowners can customize everything from the size and color to adding extra bling with specialty hardware. Kate Ellison, sales specialist, uses an iPad app that enables homeowners to mix and match different options for their door.

Depending on the size of your home and entryway, a larger door may be necessary to complete the aesthetic.

“I was just at a beautiful brick home that had an entry door and two side lights and transom,” says Ellison. “We’re replacing that with 8 ft. double doors that will make more of a statement and go better with the size of the house.” Regardless of the door style, homeowners can customize everything from the size and color to adding extra bling with specialty hardware. The great thing about working with a custom door dealer is that every homeowner can put their own mark on their door. For more information on Franklin Window & Door, visit franklinwindowanddoor.com.

KITCHEN DESIGN

ACo:

MAKE A STATEMENT WITH

Matte Black Finishes

Black is a classic design color that never goes out of style, and right now, it is popping up everywhere. But it’s not just any kind of black trending – homeowners are gravitating towards matte black finishes. Matte black can be subtle and simple, or it can be a real eye-catcher.

Here are 5 ways to incorporate matte black finishes in your kitchen. 1 FIXTURES & ACCESSORIES  Not so sure about matte black? Use it sparingly.

2 4 H AV E N

Simple cabinet hardware can give a dramatic look to white shaker cabinets, or a rustic vibe to gray stained cabinetry. Black stainless faucets & black composite sinks make dishwashing a little more [visually] appealing. Light fixtures and other decor are great options that can be swapped out easily. You can see if black is the right color for your space first without making any big commitments.  The great thing about matte black is that is goes with everything – you don’t have to use it everywhere. It’s great with brushed silvers, whites & even gold tones. You could

combine a black stainless faucet with a white cast iron farmhouse-style sink and champagne gold cabinet hardware. 2 APPLIANCES Homeowners have fallen in love with black stainless appliances. They are sleek, they are sophisticated, they are new, & best of all they don’t show [as many] fingerprints. Depending on your cabinetry, the black stainless can either blend with the design or can act as a contrasting element in the space. Either way, we love it! 3 COUNTERTOPS Are you ready to add an intense impact

to your kitchen? Consider using Cambria’s Blackpool Matte Quartz Countertop. You could get lost in this countertop, just like you would gazing up at the stars in a moonless black sky. Absolutely stunning! If you’re looking for something a little more refined, check out Cambria’s Edinburough. Though softer and more muted in color, it’s equally as beautiful. 4 TILE A solid matte black backsplash tile could be a complement to a marble-look countertop, highlighting the veining of the counter. Or perhaps it could serve as a clean backdrop to a kitchen with darker finishes. For an art-deco feel in your space, add a black and white encaustic tile backsplash to complete the look of your sleek and simple slab cabinetry and solid-toned countertops.  5 CABINETRY Looking for a something a little bolder that will really make heads turn? Design your entire kitchen around black cabinetry. While it definitely adds a bit of drama to your home, designed right, it can also add a touch of class, sophistication, and spunk! Your home should be a reflection of you and your style. So, whether your matte black finishes are classic and simple or extravagant and fearless, own it! Love where you live and let your design speak for itself. Visit liveaco.com for more inspiration and schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our talented designers.

RE/MAX AT THE CROSSING:

Home Buyers Shopping for a House Online Should Still

Use a Realtor by Matt Keating

When it comes to looking for a new home, what homebuyers see (online), isn’t always what they get. Navigating the home buying process takes more work than just picking out your favorite home online, and a Realtor can help guide you past the pitfalls. “There are so many homes listed for sale on the Internet, but homeowners looking at photos for a house they are interested in buying are not seeing everything,” Realtor Phil Hotle says. Websites don’t always take into account the amenities that a home may have, advises Hotle. He also cautions that photos of the listing may look great, but the surrounding area may have drawbacks that you can’t see on-line. There may be power lines in the backyard of a house, or a junky car in the neighbor’s yard. Home buyers should also beware of over inflated home values on some real estate websites. An experienced Realtor can help you determine the best offer to make so you don’t overpay or risk losing out on your dream home to a higher bid. According to a study by The National Association of Realtors, while 99 percent of millennials cited using the Internet for their home search, buyers still worked with an agent 87 percent of the time. Hiring a Realtor you can trust is key to not just finding the right home to buy, but also making a good offer and seeing it through to closing. “Home buyers still need to work with a Realtor and go out and see the house they want to buy,” Hotle says. For help avoiding the homes that are too good to be true, and finding the one that’s right for you, contact Phil Hotle at RE/MAX At The Crossing.

TRUST THE EXPERTS Websites don’t always take into account the amenities that a home may have, advises Hotle. He also cautions that photos of the listing may look great, but the surrounding area may have drawbacks that you can’t see on-line.

ften when friends get together and ask how things are going, the response is, “Oh, life is crazy!” It’s a universal sentiment that never seems to change. That’s why in recent years, appliance manufacturers have been designing smart technology that simplifies daily tasks, thereby enhancing customers’ quality of life. Dave Smith, Appliance Gallery Showroom Manager at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen, & Lighting Gallery in Indianapolis, has found that Indy homeowners are just starting to recognize how smart appliances can vastly improve their everyday lives. The biggest trend right now is appliances with voice activation, pairing with popular platforms such as Google Home, Alexa, and Apple Home.  “If you have a Whirlpool range and your hands are covered in cookie dough, you can tell [voice activation] it to turn on convection to 325 degrees,” says Smith, noting that Whirlpool purchased the Yummly recipe app and soon (it’s in beta testing now) homeowners will be able to take a picture of five things they have in their refrigerator and the app will display recipes that can be made with those items. “You hit a button and it will send cooking instructions to your oven,” says Smith. “It goes beyond the appliance function and integrates how the appliance can help you with the recipe.” Chefs who are lacking confidence in the kitchen can benefit as well. For instance, within the Whirlpool line, Jenn Air has a feature called the Culinary Center that can be operated from a smartphone. If you want to serve beef tenderloin at a dinner party but have no idea how to cook it, the Culinary

Center uses visual cues from your app to help you along. “You can tell it, ‘I want my beef tenderloin medium,’ and it will show you a picture of what medium means to the oven,” explains Smith. “If you want it more or less done, it will let you scroll through pictures to select the desired doneness and will provide an update as to how close you are to that stage. You can watch the progress on the app simultaneously as it’s in the oven.” Another cool cooking technology is called Cue (available from GE and Hestan) in which the cookware has a sensor that communicates to the app on your smartphone or tablet and, in turn, to the actual burner. “A lot of people are afraid to cook fish, but the Cue tells you how to preheat the pan, when to add the salmon and the seasoning, and when to turn it,” says Smith. “It gives guided video on your smart device on what to do as it’s happening in your pan in real time.” The GE Café Series also offers precision cooking via sous vide. Say you wanted to serve filet medallions at a perfect medium. You would cook it to whatever that 3 2 H AV E N

sous vide temperature and time is, then store them in your refrigerator until your company arrives at which time you sear the medallions to bring them back up to temperature. “It will be perfectly cooked on the interior without you having to guess,” says Smith. Thermador’s new smart product series enables communication directly with the manufacturer to diagnose performance issues of an appliance – a feature that saves both time and frustration. “Nobody’s happy when their product is broken so making it easy to have it diagnosed and serviced in a timely manner is huge,” says Smith. And speaking of time, Samsung and Dacor offer refrigerators with cameras inside so that homeowners can check what they need when they are out grocery shopping. “If you can’t remember whether you need milk or eggs, you can remote into the interior of your fridge to see,” says Smith. As far as outdoor products, Lynx Smart Grills have no controls on the front. Instead, temperature is set through the app. They also have a Wi-Fi compatible smoker that uses wood chips and keeps track of temperature, whether you’re Morgan Collec smoking ribs, chicken breast, or a whole turkey. These smart appliances enable homeowners to utilize products that in the past may have only served to confuse them. “It’s amazing how many people have had a convection Morgan Collec oven for 20 years and didn’t use it because they didn’t know how,” says Smith. “They had this incredible technology in their home but didn’t know B E S T. THE SMART PERGOLA:

Protecting You in All Kinds of Weather by Matt Keating

When you live in Indiana, the weather can change on the spin of a dime, but Anna Bertolini, owner of The Smart Pergola, says their pergolas have you covered. “You may not be able to count on the Indiana weather, but you can count on The Smart Pergola to protect you, your family, and your friends from it,” Bertolini said. The Smart Pergola, which is customizable in color and size, has a remote-controlled roof that opens and closes. Using the remote, or the app on your phone, you can angle the louvers to let the heat out, keeping you in the shade. You can also close them to keep the warmth in during those crisp evenings. “With its rain sensor, the louvers will automatically close as soon as it feels rain, keeping you and your furniture dry,” Bertolini stated.

3 6 H AV E N

The gutter system collects the rainwater, draining it off into the downspouts inside the posts. Bertolini noted that you can extend the use of your outdoor area, because the remote-controlled screens not only block the early morning/evening sun, but also the driving wind and rain. “If you really want to be out there even more, the vinyl drops with the addition of a heater, or fire table, will take you through the colder months,” she said. “With the addition of lights, fans, speakers, a television, and a grill, you won’t want to go inside! We’ve been told by many of our 300 local customers that The Smart Pergola is their favorite room in the house!” The powder coated, extruded aluminum of The Smart Pergola is maintenances free, so there is no need to paint or stain it. It also

won’t rust or rot, according to Bertolini. “It holds the snow, so you can leave your furniture out in the winter and grill, without having to shovel first!” The Smart Pergola is not only extremely functional, but it has a certain cool factor that enhances the aesthetic of any outdoor space. Bertolini said. “Don’t take our word for it. Go and check them out at one of the many restaurants that have them!” Visit TheSmartPergola.com for the full list of locations, and to learn how you can stop worrying about the weather and start enjoying your outdoor space.

HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:

Don’t Get Caught in the

COLD with an Unreliable Furnace by Matt Keating

With many cold days and nights in store for the next several months, Brian Schutt, owner of Homesense Heating & Cooling, says the time might be right for homeowners to consider a furnace replacement. “If your furnace makes strange noises or produces odd odors, you may be ready,” Schutt said. “If it’s an older model with less efficiency than current models, it’s probably a good idea to get some pricing options before the middle of winter. We have been recommending three of the gas furnace models available from global heating and cooling leader Daikin.” Daikin offers an industry leading 12 year parts and labor warranty with new furnace equipment, and many of the top rated high efficiency options come standard. “Shopping in the fall for a new furnace can usually give homeowners a better price than if they wait for it to have an emergency,” said Schutt. “In addition, there are better rebates and 0% financing options if they make a decision before December.” The three main factors in pricing your furnace replacement will always be size, efficiency, and brand, according to Schutt. He also added smart home technology as yet another factor. “Alexa and Google enabled thermostats make home comfort control one step easier, and add very little cost to your new furnace installation,” he said. A Homesense team member is happy to evaluate your furnace and help you weigh all your options so you can make the best decision. Contact Homesense Heating & Cooling to schedule a free appointment before winter arrives.

Coming soon to the heart of Fishers, Indiana, adjacent to the Nickel Plate Trail, Hub & Spoke is a unique 94,000 square foot master-planned mixed-use development and partnership with the City of Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern Schools. The project, anticipated to open in April of 2020, consists of a Design Center with retail showrooms, the Community Connect with coworking space, and a state-of-the-art Makerspace. Our Makerspace facility – the Hub & Spoke Institute (HSI, a 501c3 nonprofit organization) – is an intersection of manufacturing equipment, tools, technology, and arts with career training and education. HSI includes a community workshop, innovation lab, and art studio where we provide S.T.E.A.M-based, hands-on, experiential learning to develop a skilled workforce. The makerspace includes an art studio and offers equipment such as 3-D printers, laser cutters, wood- and metal-working tools, and CNC equipment (Computer Numerical Control machines are automated milling devices that make industrial components without direct human assistance). In this dedicated space, projects can range from basic arts and crafts to full-on product development and manufacturing. HSI was created to help students and young adults find their passions earlier in life and create a clear path to a successful future. HSI is not a trade school – it’s an all-inclusive facility cultivating the next generation of skilled trade workers, whether a college degree will be required or not. Much like S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) philosophies, we approach education and learning more holistically. Instead of producing just an electrician or an engineer, students are also trained in hard and soft employability and entrepreneurial skills, so that they can make well-founded decisions about their important future when the time comes. Visit us online at hubandspoke.works to learn how you can get involved in this one-of-a-kind project.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

G&G CUSTOM HOMES:

EXTERIOR DESIGN with G&G Custom Homes by Christy Heitger-Ewing

There’s nothing more comforting than pulling in the driveway and seeing, you are home. For G&G Custom Homes clients, it takes both interior finishes and exterior details to create a home that is a reflection the family that lives there. Owner, Joe Garcia, and McGinnis Designer, Dean Drake, sat down with us to explain the exterior design process, home styles and what’s been hot in the Midwest market. To begin the homebuilding process, both Joe and Dean meet with the client to discuss goals, budgets and how they prefer to live at home. Surprisingly to many, the exterior is designed after a floor plan. “The overall floor plan of a home can 4 2 H AV E N

dictate what style best suits the exterior. I take a different approach when designing a prairie style home, or a home that has mainly hip roofs, than when I design a modern farmhouse that has mainly crisp lines and gables,” explained Dean. Speaking of modern farmhouses, it’s proven to be a home style preferred by many clients the past few years, but G&G designs and constructs anything from traditional colonials to modern asymmetrical flat roof homes! The G&G team agreed, front porches and outdoor living areas are a favorite. Dean added, “Those spaces really invite you into the home and seamlessly bring the

indoors and outdoors together!” When designing a home, Dean tries to limit the exterior materials to a combination of three materials, “more than that can look off balance.” Selecting materials can be one of the biggest decisions for homeowners to make, but G&G is there to help every step of the way. If you’re in the market for a custom build with an exterior catered to your desires and way of living, connect with G&G Custom Homes at 317-418-7665 or ggcustomhomes.com.

DRAPERY STREET:

Extend Porch Season with

OUTDOOR SHADES Falling leaves and falling temperatures do not have to mean the end of porch season. Extend porch season with outdoor shades from Drapery Street. Outdoor roller shades cut back on wind and keep heat in so you can sit comfortably on your porch in cooler weather. They also block leaves and other debris from entering your patio so you can put the broom down and enjoy a glass of wine instead! WIND RESISTANT If gusty breezes are what have you running indoors, you’ll love that Drapery Street’s outdoor screen shades cut substantially back on wind. There’s no need to worry about keeping these shades from blowing around. They latch in place and can safely withstand wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour.

BENEFITS OF OUTDOOR SHADES FROM DRAPERY STREET:  Provides privacy without blocking views

PRIVACY WITHOUT COMPROMISING VIEWS

 Blocks wind and helps retain heat

As the trees lose their leaves you might notice your privacy has been compromised. If privacy is what you’re after, outdoor screen shades can help with that too. When closed, they can create a privacy barrier between yourself and your neighbor. Don’t worry about losing your views. Outdoor screen shades provide all the benefits without distracting from or eliminating your views. So, they are the perfect choice for homes located on lakes or golf courses.

Outdoor roller shades cut back on wind and keep heat in so you can sit comfortably on your porch in cooler weather. Many exterior window treatment products on the market today are poorly made and do not deliver any real benefits. They block views, are difficult to operate, or don’t stand up over time. Drapery Street’s roller shades provide you with all the benefits listed above without any compromises. They can withstand strong winds and hits from a golf ball, so you know they’ll

last for years to come. The motorized operating option makes raising and lowering your outdoor shade easy. Turn your covered patio into a screened in porch with the touch of a button. GR ADISON DESIGN - BUILD:

Embrace the Outdoors by Installing

Giant Windows IN YOUR HOME by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Derek Kemp

BIGGER IS BETTER “We like to use the largest window size possible, pushing the width boundary on a casement window,” says Joe Gradison, owner of Gradison Design-Build.

Research has shown that nature nourishes, soothes, refreshes, and restores our mind, body, and soul. Roger Ulrich, a Texas A&M University professor and leading researcher in the effects of environment on behavior, found that individuals who were exposed to nature recovered more quickly from stress and that outside exposure calms our heart rate, sharpens our concentration, and enhances our mood. There’s no doubt about it – basking in the sun feels good in every way (just ask every feline who has ever sprawled out or curled up into a home’s “sun spot” for the afternoon). In the winter, we gravitate to the room that provides the most sunlight. It’s also why homeowners are increasingly choosing to invite the outdoors in by installing large (and often numerous) windows in their great rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, lofts, and other areas. Not only do huge windows make a room feel more luxurious and spacious, but they also provide easy and ample access to those health-enhancing sunbeams that perk us up and zen us out. In short, creating a light, bright, airy space makes us feel better. Joe Gradison, owner of Gradison Design-Build, has certainly seen this trend grow in recent years. “We’re a design build with diversity in our architectural offerings that executes to our clients’ desires in general terms,” says Gradison. “Pella Windows fits in with that mission nicely when it comes to the stylistic options they provide. As a result, they make a great partner.” The two companies’ strengths were beautifully exemplified recently when they partnered for the October 2019 Home-a-Rama that was held in Zionsville. Voted one of the best custom building and remodeling companies in the Indy area, the team at Gradison Design-Build was eager to work with the crew at Pella Windows so they could create breathtaking home designs that infuse quality. “We like to use the largest window size possible, pushing the width boundary on a casement window,” says Gradison. They do so because it’s what the customer craves. And that’s what they’re all about – providing complete customer satisfaction. Gradison Design-Build, a family construction business that has served GRADISON the Indianapolis community for more than three decades, approaches each project DESIGN-BUILD in a collaborative, reassuring, and enjoyable way. 6330 E 75th Street, Suite 156 Indianapolis, IN 46250 So many of us, regardless of age or stage of life, spend an inordinate amount of 317.258.8348 time poised in front of some sort of screen – a recipe for mental fatigue. Lighting is an easy way to update, innovate, or satiate a desire to try something new. As we look ahead at the 2020 lighting trends in home design, a number of contemporary geometric shapes and choices are entering the market. These distinctive shapes offer homes a focal point that will not only serve to literally brighten up a space but also inspire “wow” reactions from guests. Honeycomb lights, for example, provide symmetry and yet enable the homeowner to exercise their creative license as they can design the shapes in whatever manner they want. Geometric chandeliers are also ultra-modern and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and options, including circular, rectangular, diamond, and globe. While most of the trends from 2019 will still be relevant, there’s a marked shift towards black lighting fixtures. Black will always convey elegance, luxury, and classic beauty, so whether we’re talking about pendant lighting, chandeliers, flush mount, or lantern lighting, black is always in style. According to Jodi Burtner, owner of Burtner Electric, Inc., “While metallic is still a popular pick for light fixtures, you’ll start to see more black lighting fixtures in the upcoming year.” Burtner also predicts that woven pendants and beaded chandeliers will be a top trend in 2020. “The natural elements will give your home a unique and warm feel while also infusing simplicity and a modern style,” says Burtner. “Lighting doesn’t have to be standard.” If you’re looking to freshen up your home with light fixtures, select the ones you want and contact Burtner Electric, Inc. to install them for you. KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS

ACo:

Designing a

Gray KITCHEN Photos courtesy of Mid Continent Cabinetry

Recent trends suggest gray is the new beige when it comes to designing interior spaces – It’s everywhere! It’s neutral, it’s complementary, and with an endless number of color options available, it can look beautiful in any space. Once considered to be only applicable in modern or farmhouse style homes, designers are now reimagining the color to make it work with everything from classical and traditional décor to transitional designs too. In recent years, gray has seen a large presence in kitchen design – the paint on the walls, the backsplash tile, the countertops and now the cabinetry too. Because of its neutral characteristics and versatility, it can provide a clean backdrop in a room or it can be the star of the show.

PANTONE Cool Gray 11C

PANTONE Cool Gray 8C

HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING A GRAY KITCHEN:

• Tone. Do you prefer a light & bright space, or something a bit darker and more intimate?

Light gray cabinets pair well with the ever-popular marble-looking countertops and white subway tile, like many kitchens that are designed today. The light gray color allows for subtle interest in an otherwise white kitchen and keeps the space feeling large and airy. Dark gray cabinets are typically designed to create a bit of contrast in a room often making a space feel a little cozier.

PANTONE Cool Gray 4C

PANTONE Cool Gray 1C

• Hue. Do you prefer a cool gray or the new warmer “greige”?

Grays can range from icy frost to a warm almost-taupe color, so when it comes to redesigning your gray kitchen, think about what type of gray you want. Cool grays typically pair well with whites and blues and tend to complement contemporary and minimalist spaces, whereas warm grays and taupes are more common in traditional and transitional design and complement earth tones, like greens and browns. That said, warm grays can also be designed with blues and whites, too. It is for this reason that trends suggest the warm grays are slightly more popular and here to stay longer than the cool grays.

• Opacity. Do you prefer a solid paint on your cabinetry, or do you want to see the beauty of the wood with a transparent stain?

Grays aren’t only available in paints, nowadays gray stains are becoming extremely popular too. Painted gray cabinets give a crisp and clean look to a space and pair nicely with shaker style doors and simplistic transitional kitchens. While stains also work in a transitional space, they can be perfect for traditional homes as well. The gray stain preserves the beauty of natural hardwood by allowing the grains to be seen, while the gray color of the stain keeps the cabinetry feeling current.

Not sure what style is right for you? Stop by ACo in Carmel and check out the latest grays that just arrived in our showroom. Then schedule a complimentary design consultation to begin designing your own gray kitchen.
