The Community Recreation and Environmental Center at Haverford Reserve is under construction and scheduled to open this summer. The CREC will have geothermal energy and other “green friendly� features which will save energy, improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff and greenhouse emissions and increase property values. The building is funded through Haverford Reserve proceeds and 2 million in grants and contributions.

Merry Place is a park area designed, built and funded by volunteer contributions for people of all ages and abilities, especially families of children with special needs. You and your family are welcome to help out at Merry Place. Bring your shovel, rake, clippers or just a helping spirit and join other community volunteers at Merry Place on Saturday, May 12th, 9-11am. Merry Place Permit Policy

Merry Place is an ideal location for family, school, scout and church gatherings. In order to allow the greatest use by township residents, we limit time blocks to 3 hour blocks and give township residents priority. For a permit please go to our website.

Due to recent requests we are considering offering residents the opportunity to have a loved one, organization or family occasion memorialized on the ‘Walk of Life’ around the gazebo at Merry Place. Community Recreation & Environmental Center Mission

The CREC is a visible symbol of the township’s commitment to the residents’ health and wellness.

When will it open? The CREC is scheduled to open around Memorial Day for summer activities. What will be the fee structure? Similiar to the Skatium; daily and seasonal passes or sign up for classes and programs, rent rooms or gym time. How do I schedule a rental? Information on rentals will be on the website beginning April 23.

Join us for an early morning search for “Haverford Hank� and his shadow as we walk the trails. Meet at the Meadow Trail Head.

Walk under the Blue Route and along Darby Creek. See the wetlands and the old railroad. Meet at the Meadow Trail Head.

All local scout leaders and their families are invited to a campfire hot dog cookout and hot chocolate at the Meadow campground.

Winter Camping Demo Saturday February 25 2-4pm

Learn fire building, outdoor cooking, making shelters, proper clothing. $5 per person. You must register in advance. Benefits of Nature Exploring nature, up close and personally, has tremendous value to our psychological well-being. The therapeutic value of outdoor education programs has been proven. Studies showed a significant reduction in stress and attention deficit symptoms when people engage in nature.

Veterans Trail

Picnic Pavilion Beginning April 21, the Picnic Pavilion will be available to township residents and organizations for rental. Rental times, fees and policies will be posted on the website.

The ‘Haverford Bikes and Walks’ has been meeting with the goal of making Haverford Township more bike friendly. Our plan is to create a map depicting safe bike routes through the township. To get involved contact Tim Denny at tdenny@haverfordtownship.org or Rich Kerr at rich.kerr@verizon.net

A “Friends of Haverford Trails” group has been formed to support all trails, including those at Haverford Reserve and the Haverford Heritage Trail. Over 100 members have joined. For information or to join us go to haverfordciviccouncil.org

Grant for Multi-Use Trail

In September, the township was awarded a $290,000 grant by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), to construct a 1.2 mile multi-use trail from Merry Place to Old Hilltop Rd. along Darby Creek, following the existing sewer line. Work on the trail improvement is expected to begin sometime during the summer.

Earth Day Walk

Sunday, April 22 12:30-2:00pm Join us for a 3 mile walk along the Darby Creek Trail from Merry Place to Haverford Reserve. Meet at Merry Place. A bus will bring us back.

A Green Friendly Town In September 2008 Haverford Township adopted a Climate Action Plan. Our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint by 20% by 2012 and 30% by 2020. Some of the measures implemented include single-stream recycling, mulching the leaves collected. replacing the roof on the Skatium and replacing street lights with more energy efficient lights. Future plans include purchasing more fuel efficient vehicles and designing geo-thermal energy systems into the Community Recreation Environmental Center. To find out more about the township’s green initiatives go to our website www.haverfordtownship.com The EAC (Environmental Advisory Committee) will host a Green House tour and information workshop in conjunction with Earth Day to educate residents on energy conservation tips. Summer Preview

The Summer edition of the HavaGood Times will be available Monday, April 30.

Summer Registration Registration begins on Monday, May 7. Our Summer Program registration process is being adjusted to help alleviate some of the first day frenzy. We will still have limited spots in certain programs. Check our website after April 1 to see which programs you will be able to register for online and how to sign up for the lottery. Full Day Summer Program The Recreation Department offers a Full Day Program (8am-6pm) for ages 6-12 starting in late June and going through the first week in August. Information on dates, times and fees will be available on our website March 5th. Registration for the program begins March 26.

...Summer Jobs... Recreation - We are looking for a few good men and women 18 and over to join our All-Star summer staff. If you have strong leadership skills and enthusiasm go to the Recreation website in February to obtain an application www.haverfordtownship.com (click on Recreation) Interviews conducted in February and March. Park Maintenance- We are accepting applications for individuals 18 and over to work seasonal park maintenance from April - July. Interviews will be held in late February into early April.
