Andy Lewis Community Park Dedication Sunday, October 24, 12-2pm
5th Ward Commissioner Andy Lewis passed away suddenly this past April. No commissioner was more influential fifteen years ago, in preserving the community space at Haverford Reserve, than Andy Lewis. In recognition of his tireless work for future generations, the Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in June to name the public area at Haverford Reserve in his honor. On Sunday, October 24, the Board will dedicate the public area as Andy Lewis Community Park. In addition to unveiling the new sign, there will be a memorial celebration at the CREC, a tree planting, and Tim Denny will give a presentation on Andy’s role preserving Haverford Reserve. Lunch will be served.
Memorial Celebration - 12pm Ribbon Cutting followed by lunch - 1pm The event is free and the public is invited to attend. To help with planning please RSVP on the Recreation Department page at www.Havtwp.org.

Trail News Haverford Township continues to add to the 17 miles of trails throughout the Township. Friends of Haverford Trails and many volunteers have helped maintain the trails and plant trees. We continue to build on an extensive trail system for residents to explore the open spaces at Haverford Reserve, Pennsy trail and along Darby and Karakung Creeks. Below is information on expansions of the Darby Creek and the Pennsy trail. You can find out more information below on our trails and volunteer work days. Darby Creek Trail - Haverford Township received a $300,000 grant from Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission to extend the Darby Creek trail from Merry Place to Warrior Road at McDonald Field. Construction on the trail will begin in spring 2022. This will extend the trail another 1/2 mile. Pennsy Trail - The construction of the bridge over Manoa Road and the extension of the Pennsy trail from Manoa road south to the Llanerch Shopping center is scheduled for next year. Construction will begin in the early spring and be completed late 2022. The project is funded through a PennDot grant of over $1,000,000.
Parks and Trails Volunteer Days From January - August 2021, our volunteers have logged over 400 hours on the parks and trails in our Township. As a result, we have been able to remove invasive species from miles of trails, plant more native species than ever before, and maintain previously planted projects. These projects promote biodiversity by offering food and habitat to native wildlife, reducing flooding and erosion, improving water quality, and providing access to high-quality natural space in our community. This Fall, we plan to continue our work, but we can’t do it without your help. We have projects planned in September, October, and November. These projects require minimal equipment and zero knowledge. Our trained staff will work with you every step of the way. Visit the current news section of the Haverford Township website for information about dates, times, and locations. You will be contacted prior to the event with information about what to bring and where to meet. If you have any questions, email Jesse Hart at jhart@havtwp.org.

Parks and Recreation are Essential Parks and Recreation played a critical role in helping the residents of Haverford Township stay safe, healthy and connected with each other during the pandemic. In addition to the huge number of people taking advantage of our trails and open spaces, we adapted to the circumstances to provide the following services to our residents. Provided online fitness classes for the last 16 months. Hosted over 30 volunteer workdays and planted over 300 trees on our trails and along our streams to allow residents to get outside and be stewards of our open spaces. Utilizing our park pavilions for outdoor fitness classes, adult school classes, and family and sports team gatherings. Hosted library programming and concerts at our parks. Continued improving our Parks with an ambitious capital campaign. Developed Sensory Trail Walks and a group workout program safe for young adults of all abilities with the help of volunteer buddies.
Capital Projects
The value we as a community put on parks, recreation and open space is reflected in the Board of Commissioners funding over 2.5 million dollars of park capital projects over the last three years. Below you will see pictures of some of those recent projects. Left is the new basketball court at Merwood Park. Right is an example of new benches at the parks. Below is the ribbon cutting of the new turf field.
