Aloha Motorheads! No, this isn’t an April Fool’s Joke, but unfortunately there is no club feature this month. For those of you who haven’t heard, I’m going through mid life crisis I think, and have decided to come out of retirement and step into the cage again this year. I retired from Shoot Fighting (a Japanese style of Mixed Martial Arts with no gloves) in 2000 with a record of 22W-8L, and have been coaching Team Shoot Hawaii ever since. But just recently caught the bug again. So I’ve been training my 40 year old butt off and dropped 30 pounds on my quest to fight at 155’s. These past couple of months have been crazy so I haven’t had as much time with the bike community as I usually do. I’m set to enter the cage again in May so wish me luck! So, if I haven’t featured your club yet here’s your chance to get prepped so that next month I can be on a roll again & try to feature every club on this Island. Not just Bikes, I’m talking Car & Truck Clubs, Mopeds, Stunters, Dirt Bike Clubs, whatevers. If it’s got an engine in it, and you ride it with a club, hit me up. What I will need is JPEG pictures of the crew & some time for us to get together so you can share your story. You can send me all info to jaz@hawaii.rr.com. Also, if you’ve got an interesting tale, story, heart warming, or funny thing that happened with you that you’d like to share please send’em over! I’d like to add another feature to the Article known as “Two Wheel Tales”. So get your club info together & I’ll come spend the day with you guys & go on a run so I can get your story in full detail. I can even cover your Club’s event! I’ll be in California this month and while I’m there I’m gonna try catch up with some local bikers that transplanted to Cali to see what they’re up to these days, so keep an eye out for that in next month or so. Again hit me up if you wanna feature your club at jaz@hawaii.rr.com or call my shop Kona Auto detail & Upholstery at 329-0979. Bagged Big &

From the Big & Tall department of sweet rides on the Big Island comes Jason Lee’s ’05 Quad Cab! Jason, an Estimator for Hinchcliff Drywall Construction purchased this big, bagged Dodge 4x4 from Dan at Kona Muffler about a year ago and began to put his own spin on things. The truck features a Kelderman Air Ride suspension with 12 inches of lift installed by Donny’s 4 Wheel Drive World – Kona. A slick diamond plate mounting pan in the rear houses the air ride pump, tank and fast valves that take this big boy from zero to hero in a matter of seconds. The reservoir shocks were painted metallic silver by Jesse Araki of DNL Painting and dampen the ride. If you have never had the chance to ride in a truck with full air ride, let me tell you it is amazing! There’s only one way to go if you wanna go big and not have to sacrifice the ride, bag it! The big rollers are 20x12” Weld Racing wheels wrapped in 38” Mickey Thompson MTZ’s. Extra boost and the ability to exhale massive amounts of air come from a Bully Dog programmer, AFE intake system and a huge 5” exhaust.

April 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 5

Ray Ascino gets the credit for painting and installing the fender flares and smoking out the headlight and taillight covers while in the cab Rob at West Side Audio re-worked the stereo install starting by re-wiring the Alpine DVD head unit and Rockford Fosgate 360 Z processing unit. Power to drive the DLS Ultimate Nobelium highs in the doors and the Image Dynamics ID Max 10 inch sub in a custom box/center console fabricated by Kona’s Tim Song are DLS 400.4 and 1200.a amplifiers. The blacked out look may be a bit stealth, but this is one ride you’ll definitely hear coming and going. It’s Big, It’s Black and It’s Bagged! Hear it and see it at the 6th Annual Transmission Technology “Run to the Sun” Poker Run and Car Show Saturday, April 17th at the Big K-Mart where this year we’ll feature a Sound Off competition hosted by the new West Side Audio. Don’t miss the big show!

The Hilo Motor Speedway Association was out kickin’ up dirt again at the monthly point series at the Hilo Raceway facility on Saturday, March 13 and it was another action packed day for stock car fans! On the cover this month, Rodney “Hot Rod” Rezentes in the yellow V-8 Modified powers out of the turn in front of Sanford Angel for a nail biting, okole squeezing heat race that had race fans on their feet. The Mini Sprints (4 cylinders) also had everyone wishing they could be behind the wheel of one of these pint sized dirt rockets. A great way to get into sprint car racing on a smaller budget! Hope to see

a lot more of these come out to play. The Winged Sprints put on a fast paced show and are always a crowd favorite but the Bomber classes and 4 Cylinder heats are also a gas to watch as they “get together” quite a bit jockeying for position around the dirt oval. I think its one of the most fun motorsports to watch! Don’t miss the next events, April 3rd and May 15!

The Big Island Auto Club’s Season Opener at the Hilo Drag Strip on February 20 & 21 saw great weather for the first time in many years and Big Island racers took advantage of every minute of sunshine! Saturday’s Pro Gas events saw an exciting final in the 8:90 index between Matt Briley of Kona in his Chevy Camaro and David Francis of Paauilo in his Dodge Dart. Both broke out running an 8.87 sec pass but Matt broke out by the least mph to take the win. David Francis made his way to the finals again in Sunday’s bracket 1 racing but could not catch Paul Crivello of Hilo in his digger who ran a 7.30 sec/180 mph pass for the win. Paul would also take Top Eliminator of the race and get the nod for the fastest car of the weekend with a 7.24 sec/180.9 mph dash down the quarter mile. The March race was scrubbed due to rain and the next race is set for April 24 & 25 with the addition of a Bug In! Quick 8, bracket racing and car show!

Big Island Malibu Kevin

Kahakua and his wife Lisa are owners of Electrical Supply Company in Kona and Waimea and a couple of certified Motorheads! And their latest ride is definitely electrifying! About 5 years ago Kevin and Lisa followed a lead on a Malibu in Kohala that had been sitting for more than a few years and was now for sale. What they found was this solid 1967 Chevy Malibu that was in great shape despite sitting under several tarps for some time. After closer inspection they decided this was the one. As many of us that have been bitten by this bug of “cool rides” know, one thing leads to another and soon you’re in deep. The restoration started with the body that was in great shape and Kevin’s buddy Patrick Close of “Close Customs” hammered out a few dings, installed the steel cowl hood and sprayed the super smooth silver paint at Kraftsman Auto Body in Kona. It’s unclear whether the vinyl top that came with the car was OG but it was in perfect shape so left as is. Most of the trim was in near perfect shape as well but Kevin decided to replace all of it so a call to OPG was made and new bumpers, grill, trim and emblems were on their way to Hawaii . The HID headlights are nice and also bring the lighting into the 21st century. Speaking of updates, Kevin wanted to bring the performance department into the new century as well starting with the suspension and brakes! Steve at Jackass Racing installed a Chassis Works 4 link and the shortened Dana 60 stuffed with 35 spline axles. Steve’s handy work also includes the mini tub to tuck the big meats and the slick gas tank cover. Up front a Hotchkis sport suspension set up with tubular A Arms, sway bar and 2” dropped spindles take care of business while slowing down the soon to be uncrated and unleashed mighty mouse motor are 13” Baer brakes at all four corners. The wheels are billet Intro Matrix designs with 18x10 in the rear and 17x7 up front filling the wheel wells nicely. The original 327 bowtie and Power Glide were set aside to make room for the new ZZ4 GM Performance Crate Motor and performance 700R4. Jet coated headers, performance intake and Holley carb, MSD ignition (hidden under the dash), March pulley set up and CSR electric water pump add to the performance of the 355 horse power, high output aluminum head mouse. The smoothed firewall is another nice touch of Jackass Racing. The Transmission Technology performance 700R4 is filled with all the best guts including a Beast Reaction Shell, HD heat treated planetary gear set, re-calibrated valve body, updated 9 friction clutch pack, high energy band, Sonnax super hold servo and a Gill Younger 700 kit! The stock interior is enhanced by a matching Intro steering wheel, Auto Meter gauges and a sweet shifter center console that makes it easier for Lisa to get her fair share of seat time. All in all, this mighty Big Island Malibu is a perfect blend of restoration and today’s hot rod. Stay tuned for Kevin & Lisa’s next restomod that they’ve started on! I’ll give you a hint, it was born in 1969. Photos and story by Nelson Ray Parker

SADDLE back in the

Back in the Saddle! Joe Richardson of Hilo , a.k.a. “The King of Bling” recently opened his new motorcycle shop, “Triple C Cycles” in Keaukaha where back in the day the late Kenny King opened Kenny Kings Cycles & Things! Joe tells us “there are so many good people I’d like to thank but first and foremost I’d like to give thanks and praise to the Lord for the blessings in my life.” It really is coming full circle as Joe pays tribute to a great mentor “Kenny taught me so much and I thank him for

that and for the kindness he had in helping people, and showing me how important it is to give back” says Joe. On the day of our photo shoot, Hilo was raining so we’d like to thank braddah Milton of Glover who left his bike with Joe so we would have a bike to shoot and then he flew back to Oahu for work. Milton ’s 2006 Fat Boy is another great example of Joe’s polishing skills that many know him for. “The King of Bling” bringing some bling into everyone’s world with his Big Island Aluminum Polishing and Auto Detailing business.

As Joe puts it, Milton’s ride is “Fully polished from back to bottom” from the chromed out Twin Cam 88 cube with the slick V-Twin air cleaner and fatty pipes to the hand polished Fat Boy rims and lower legs on the front end, this ride shines! The Fatty also features some pretty wild paint with a tribal iron cross airbrush design by Hawaii Airbrush in Honolulu . Triple C Cycles added more bling with chrome pieces including the chrome rear bumper, rear fender braces and front and rear blinkers. Keep an eye on Triple C Cycles in the years to come as Joe plans on taking it wide. We’ll keep you up to speed with all the happenings at this happening new bike shop. Word!

CLUTCH PEDAL ADJUSTMENT While more and more cars and trucks are coming equipped with automatic transmissions, we still see a fair number of clutches and manual transmissions. Most of them are fairly straightforward; usually the clutch starts slipping and needs to be replaced. Or sometimes one comes in that grinds while shifting into one or more gear ranges or having loud ratcheting gear clash. When you press the clutch pedal, it disengages the transmission from the engine, allowing the input shaft and countershaft to stop turning. With the vehicle stopped and the transmission disengaged from engine rotation, the transmission will usually shift between gears easily. And , with the input shaft and countershaft fully stopped, the transmission shouldn’t grind going into gear. While the vehicle’s driving, disengaging the clutch relieves the stress from the engine’s torque on the synchronizers, allowing the transmission to shift more easily. A misadjusted clutch pedal or air in the hydraulic system may cause loss of pressure to the slave cylinder, resulting in hard to shift and gear clash. I would recommend to first bleed the hydraulic system removing all air in the lines. Then adjust the clutch master cylinder push rod. In most cases you’re looking for somewhere around ¾” to 1” of pedal free play. Keep in mind that to little freeplay is usually worse than too much. Too little means the throwout bearing may be holding pressure on the pressure plate, keeping the bearing turning or, worse yet, preventing the pressure plate from applying full pressure to the clutch disc. Either condition is a sure way to cause a clutch to fail. Don’t forget that some clutches uses a ratcheting adjustment. You’re supposed to lift up on the clutch pedal to allow the ratchet adjustment to reset itself. Make sure you check your shop manual for the proper adjustment procedure and freeplay specification for your vehicle, or you may bring it to Transmission Technology for a complimentary road test and clutch freeplay inspection. In Kona call 331-8310 located next to Daleco Battery behind Big Island Auto Parts. In Hilo call 935-1600 behind Dukes Kilauea Shell gas station. I would like to thank all those who have participated in the 6th Annual Run To The Sun Poker Run Car Show. Please bring some non perishable food to donate to the Hawaii Food Basket. and also please support our Boy Scout Of America Aloha Council Makahiki Events. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you there! Respectfully, Vic Comesario

Kohala Kountry Roads Rally March 14, 2010 And, now for something completely different.. At least for the Big Island SCCA. We put on our first road rally, Kohala Kountry Roads, Sunday, March 14. We had ten teams turn out for a quick, two hour, eighty mile run over some of the nicest roads on the island. We started from the Shops at Mauna Lani. For the first leg, we ran an odometer check. The participants got the chance to calculate their speedometer error, and learned to apply the correction factor to their mileage. The route took them up the Akoni Pule Highway, for a little coastal whale watching. Next leg, it was a change of scenery coming over the Kohala Mountain Road to Waimea. Along this section we asked questions about elements along the route, and tossed in a few questions about local history as well. Heading south on HWY 190, and making the turn down Waikoloa Road, everyone was on the look out for wildlife – both real, and in the form of art or signs. Keeping track of all the critters was part of the Game-Tour-Adventure part of the rally, to keep folks alert and busy. We finished up back at the Shops at Mauna Lani, at the Monstera Restaurant, where we scored the rally, and handed out our awards. First place went to Jan & Barry Breen of Redmond Washington, second to Tim and Kendall DiDonato of Waikoloa, and third to the team of Bob & Trudy Lindsay of Fern Acres. Everyone gave us positive feedback, and the great thing about rallying is it is something that can be shared. Many teams were couples, and we even had a couple of kids along, so it was a perfect family outing. We plan to do more rallys in the future, so if you have an interest check us out at www.bigislandscca.org

BRADDAHZ CAFE Awrite! We found another awesome place to grind! This month we found a familiar face behind the grill of a new place to get some real ono kine grinds while you’re out working or playing. Introducing “Braddahz Café” on Kaiwi Street in Kona’s Old Industrial area! This is one of those “You gotta try” places to eat with Braddah B, Brian Silva who spent the last 12 years whipping up local favorites at Ken’s Pancake House in Hilo, is now living his dream of owning his own café. Braddah B who has been cooking since he was in High School back around 1982 or so has had lots of experience cooking many different kinds of food cooking at the places like the Volcano House and Kilauea Lodge, Restaurant Osaka in Hilo and the old Mama Lani’s. Brian’s brother and partner in the business, Jeff Silva found the listing for the restaurant on Craig’s List and spent the last few months completely renovated it. Its clean and cozy and the food is what locals say “broke da mouth!” Good, home made food prepared with all fresh local ingredients! On our tasting day we had to try Braddah B’s signature Omelets and Loco Moco. Brian told me to get my camera ready cause I’ll want a picture of his signature 3 egg omelet when it comes off the grill. It was so fluffy and big it took up the whole platter and stood a good 3 inches tall! (or thick) An amazing omelet that was so ono and also stuffed full of goodies, I had the Denver . This is a “gotta try” folks. It’s served with rice or hash browns and toast and only $6.50. What a treat! Next we had to try Braddah B’s signature Loco Moco. This is one dish that I like to rate local restaurants on is how good of a Loco Moco do they have.

April 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 21 And you know they going feed you local style when the menu comes with a Warning label. “Warning: Some of our plates have been known to cause temporary paralysis!” The Loco starts with five (5) scoops of delicious fried rice, Brian said “that’s a gimme, the fried rice but you could have it with white rice if you like.” It was topped with two oversized “real” hamburger patties (no pressed or frozen patties here), 3 eggs and home made brown gravy! I had found Loco Moco paradise! Braddahz Café is definitely on my “You gotta Try” places to eat for breakfast or lunch list. Awesome omelets, Belgian Waffles, coconut, macnut or banana pancakes for breakfast, burgers and sandwiches, (they even get Chili Cheese Fries!) to garden salads and vegetarian omelets and lunch dishes. Local favorites like Kalbi Ribs, Chicken Katsu, Beef Stew, Shrimp plate, Roast Pork! And if you get hard time chose, just order one Mix Plate with 2 or 3 choices and one extra fork! You don’t have to go far for great food, dine in or take out right there in the Old Industrial area across the street from Lex Brodies, behind Kona Lock Smith. They do catering too! You gonna thank me! Braddahz Café! 329-9966 Awrite!

Just $50 a month to have Your business in the Motorhead Directory!

Rain altered our original comp. site again, so a huge thanks to Abe of R/C Heaven for opening up his shop for the club. Once again, home made courses put every ones driving skills, and course building skills to the test. Dramas unfolded as the current points leader gets denied his third win in a row by the “Crazy_Kanaka”, Kevan K. All was sure Ryan was top driver today untill the numbers told the truth. Though it has been awhile, and long awaited, we welcome Kevan back to the top spot as March’s comp. #3, Top Dog. A huge congrats to Kevan K. for his win today. There was quite a few high scores once again but looks like today was your day Bro. Great skills and talent, congrats again. Ryan finished with a solid #2 spot, but a small battle ensued between Mike S. and Jerome S. for the third spot. With only a single gate penalty difference by Mike, Jerome edged by to grasp third place, and Mike in fourth. Pocho, still a new driver, is keeping pace with a nice fifth place sitting.
