BIHR Solo Report July 11, 2010 Report Jim Cohn, Photos Kevin Kadooka & Jim Cohn July is kind of a tough month for much competition, with summertime travel taking many folks off island. So it was a pleasant surprise to pick up a few additional entrants for this event. Jevon Sanborn and Hawke Walleman produced the ‘Overnight Sensation!’ a Mazda Miata with restored engine, some e-bay coilovers, and 13x8 rims shod with sticky tires to nail down top time of day. The car was shared between Jevon, Hawke, and new (at least to BIHR solo 2 racing) Gabe Larkins. The little car got a workout, but it worked! Cruising in style were Mike and Noelani Rogerson, who put their Cadillac CTS-V through the course. The black bomber showed good time and respectable speed for cars of this type. Now that they have had the cruise, maybe they will be back to improve their solo skills and raise the bar. With the Alpha in the body shop for a little restoration, Mark Pernell brought out his beautiful Ferrari 328 GTS for a little romp. It’s always fun for the owners of interesting machinery to have a chance to put their cars through their paces, and its certainly great fun for the rest of us to watch! Having a place where you can drive those cars hard but where it’s safe for all concerned is what makes racetracks assets to the community. The course was again designed by Nick Buscher and Brandon Wilk, and while looking complicated at first, proved to be manageable. We may be in store for some gimmicks, as I heard the guys talking about doing a gymkhana in the future. Gymkhanas differ from Solo in that they can have reversing sections, as well as other elements that test driving skills. A gymkhana is still a timed event, and will be one car on track at a time, and fastest time still is important. We will have to see who comes up with what, since I think Hawke has some ideas too! Big Island of Hawaii Region welcomes everyone to come out and give Solo a try. We don’t charge for spectators, so check it out! Next event is August 29, and is dedicated to Jay Bratton, one of our mainland members and supporters, who passed away a few weeks ago.

STOCK CAR

& DEMOLITION DERBY

Jim Riddiford Racing Photos - 808-217-9289

The Hilo Motor Speedway Association held its July Points Race at the Hilo Motor Speedway dirt oval track on Saturday, July 10th. And if the roar of the engines and thrills and spills of the stock car racing wasn’t enough excitement for ya, they also had for the first time in a long time, a Demolition Derby! It was non stop crash and bang action and a big hit with both the participants and spectators alike! I’m sure we’ll see more Demolition Derby action in the future. The stock car racing provided everyone with lots of nail biting, okole squeezin’, on the edge of your seat action as usual with a big field of Bombers, 4 Cylinders, V-8 Stock, Mods and Sprints and proved to be well worth the price of admission! Don’t miss the next stock car race on Saturday, August 7th at the Hilo Motor Speedway, next to the Hilo Drag Strip. For more details you can call Tony at 315-6977.

Hot Steppin’ all the way to Kauai for an NHRA Wally! That’s what Darrell & Evelyn Agliam, owners of Big Island Lube and the new Big Island Auto Detailing in Hilo did this past Independence Day! Darrell has owned the Toyota pick up for about 15 years and has been racing the street legal truck for the past 10 propelling it to more than a handful of wins in the 10.90 et class at the Hilo Drag Strip. Last year Darrell and Evelyn made the long trip to Kauai for the annual 4th of July Drags and had such a good time that they set sail for the Garden Isle again this year. “The trip to Kauai was great” says Darrell. “Everyone there treated us so well. They get plenty Aloha over there! The Garden Isle Racing Association took good care of the truck and our family and I was very honored to be a part of the first annual “Rudy Ramos Independence Day Races” which were held this past July 3rd and 4th.” On Saturday, Darrell won the Pro ET Class and Sunday took the top spot in the “King of the Track” where he got to hoist his first NHRA Wally! the same bore and stroke as an original 454 big block and runs on pump gas! Topped with a set of Brodix aluminum cylinder heads and a Holley Pro Dominator intake stacked with a pair of 850 carbs and stuffed with goodies like a Lunati cam shaft the pump gas combo puts out over 600 horse power and 574 foot pounds of torque. A built TCI Powerglide transmission and torque converter hooked up to a Chrysler 8 ¾ inch rear end with 4:30 gears and Moser spool and axels get the power to the pavement to run a best time of 10.39 at 128mph. Darrell and Evelyn want to thank their sponsors and the gang for putting so much time and effort in helping with the Hot Steppa including Mihara Transfer, Parong’s Auto Fabrication, Bobby of Auto Stylin’ & Performance – Kauai, Gerald & Shellen Abiley & family of Kauai, Darrell’s brother Royden for the body and paint, Peter Naho’opi’i of Wicked Airbrush for the graphics, Ralph for the louvers on the custom fabricated tonneau cover and Da Koi Store. Hello Motorheads. The July race was slowed by a few short rain delays but it does not take long to dry a hot track and get back to racing. In the kids class Jayden Sanborn was the big winner. The JR2’s had Drew Holloway dominating the heat races but after Pa Holloway got Makena’s new motor in tune it made for some great racing for the JR’s. In the Sr. Sportsman JR. Parel brought out his vintage 125cc Comer but it just was not enough to keep up with Daron King’s new Trackmagic Yamaha. Roland Hall was the fast TAG Kart. Tim Eback and Terry Powell were even all day with both winning races. We are going to try something new for our Sept. race. Racing for money!! “The Dash for Cash” It will be for the adult classes only. Saturday the 10th. will be for practice and weigh-ins (yes you must make weight for your class) with Sunday the 11th will be race day. There will be a $50 entry fee and the prizes will be by how many enter in each class. Please call me for more info. The weekend of Sept. 10th.-11th. the Circle Track Association is going to be putting on a Show & Shine, Flea-market, Live music and Rides for the kids. Come on out and have a fun weekend of racing. For more info about the racing at the Hilo Raceway Park please call Tom Sluder at 808-939-9746

DRIVE SHAFT NOISE A 1994 Jeep Wrangler entered our Hilo shop with a customer complaint of a soft crackling noise. The noise was intermittent but most obvious when taking off from a start or slowing down to a stop. The u-joints and the brakes was already worked on by another shop. We removed and inspected the axles, the drive shaft, the carrier and spider assembly, the ring and pinion, drive shaft slip yokes and flange, but there was no manifestation of internal wear or visible cracks. It sounded like those crackling candies you put in your mouth except this one was not nice and sweet! We did notice however that the 4x4 transfer case was leaking so it was removed, inspected and resealed. On the lift, our stethoscope would not detect the noise because of no load and was not duplicated. Three days has already gone by and the customer is anticipating results. I thought to myself the only way I can get this noise to manifest itself consistently and be more detectable is to drive the heck across saddle road and hopefully, yes hopefully, the crackling noise becomes louder. It sure did and with some prayer I was able to make it to our Kona shop. And by the way the customer did authorize my transport to Kona. The crackling noises was now consistent. Our Kona team observed and found=2 0the drive shaft tube noisy and was taken to Donny’s 4x4 world in which Donny had provided a new drive shaft. But how in the world a nice beautiful and clean drive shaft would make those weird noises. One problem encountered by driveshaft tubes is their tendency to produce and transmit sound while transferring the power of the engine to the axle assembly. The sound can be undesirably noisy to passengers riding in the vehicle. Thus it would be advantageous to deaden or reduce the sound produced by a vehicle driveshaft tube, in order to provide the passengers with a more quiet and comfortable ride. Various attempts have been made to deaden the sound produced by vehicle driveshaft tubes. In one such attempt, a hollow cylindrical cardboard insert was disposed inside an aluminum driveshaft tube to deaden the sound. However, the card board insert required external rubber ribs to prevent it from sliding inside the cylindrical tube, and as a result it was relatively complicated and expensive to employ. Other attempts at deadening the sound produced by driveshaft tubes have suffered from similar drawbacks and have not been totally satisfactory. Other materials used were polypropylene, resin, a patented urethane elastomer, and a hard synthetic plastic. In this scenario, what ever was in the Jeep’s drive shaft had broken apart and got noisy. I’m not sure which material was used in the jeep’s cylindrical tube to deaden the sound but the fact the matter is that we solved th e problem! For any questions regarding driveline noises or would like a complimentary road test please call or visit us at Transmission Technology in Kona 331-8310 or Hilo 935-1600. Respectfully, Vic Comesario

Root Beer time

When Waikoloa’s Rob Shropshire set out to build this 1965 Chevy Nova he wanted to stuff some serious horse power into the compact classic but at the same time have something that would not only show nicely but was very streetable, including having a back seat despite the need for a mini tub to accommodate the fatty back rubber also on his wish list, oh and if he had the urge, he could also take it racing so it would need the necessary safety equipment! A tall order for most builders, but not for Mike at Thunder Alley who specializes in this kind of madness! Rob’s buddy in Oregon was looking for a good home for the original ’65 and knew Rob would do it up right. The project started with a Chris Alston Chassis Works frame and roll cage fitted with a Chassis Works IFS and 4 link coilover set up in the rear with a Fab9 rear end. A bunch of work went into the mini tubs in the rear to retain the back seat and the front fender well openings were stretched to fit the 2 ½ inch stretched wheelbase. The wheels are Boyd Coddington’s, 18x9 up front and 18x12 in the rear. Wilwood disc brakes are found on all four corners to bring the powerful 620 horse power, 572 crate motor to a halt. Mike fabricated the big tube headers which needed to go up and over the frame rails since the massive motor stretches from rail to rail. Also check out how neat the mufflers are tucked up under the trunk area. The Vintage Air keeps the cockpit cool while the Be Cool aluminum radiator puts the cool on the monster motor. The transmission is a 4L80E by Carl Rossler at Rossler Transmissions in Girard , Ohio . Eki at Fia Fia Auto Body and Paint get the credit for the body work and Root Beer paint while Ron at Big Island Upholstery got pretty much free reigns on the interior. I really like the split bench seat and the cool stitching. Also note the neat little covers on the tabs for the side roll cage bars that Rob can quickly install for those trips down the quarter mile. A billet ididit steering column with Budnik billet steering wheel go well with the Dakota Digital gauges and billet door handles, gas pedal and Vintage Air dash pieces. And the vintage looking radio is really a modern CD player in disguise! It was 4 years in the making, but well worth the wait as this one is definitely a home run. It’s got the best of all worlds I think and we were lucky enough to catch up with Rob and his son Brenton on a weekend cruise for the photo shoot. Thanks for sharing guys!

30 Day WONDER

W

hen Hilo ’s Royden Nabarro Jr. decided to commission Chris of Twisted Bike Worx to rebuild his 1990 Harley Davidson Soft Tail he had to decide whether he wanted to get the bike ready for the 4th of July run or the Big Island Super Show which was 30 days away!

He chose the later and the re-build was under way. Within a few hours the bike was stripped and work started on the frame and sheet metal including the 6 inch stretch and 40 degree rake on the frame and the slick modification to the stock swing arm. Royden went to work on the stock bob tail fender by shortening it about 2 inches before welding it to the frame with half inch round stock for a nice smooth look. Chris stretched the sportster gas tank while the full length front fender from uncle George give it a real classic look that was further complimented by the Candy Brandy Wine and Silver paint scheme by Mark Kealoha Turner. Ryan at Art Works in Hilo did the graphics and

striping that put the finishing touches on this instant classic looking custom. Royden hammered out the seat pan and Thompson’s Upholstery stretched and stitched the black leather seat cover. The billet front end that was black powder coated when the build started was stripped and polished by Chris’ girlfriend Christy. The V-Twin handle bars are fitted with PM controls. The rear wheel is also a PM unit as are the disc brakes. The 21 inch front wheel features Twisted spokes and a black powder coated hub. The 80 cube Evolution motor with wrapped Ground Pounder pipes and lots of polished billet and chrome is mated to a Twisted Bike Worx 5 speed. Royden tells us “it was worth missing the 4th of July run and the many long sleepless nights” after he brought home the 1st place trophy in the Full Custom class at the Big Island Super Show. Royden also extends his gratitude to his mom and dad for their help and support and Chris and Christy from Twisted Bike Worx for the re-build (and getting it done in the 30 days) and to Uncle George Calicdan, Nohea, Merlin, Stacy and Paul for your kokua!

This months Cruisin’ for Grinds is taking a bit of a twist as we go cruisin’ with local Boy Scout, Zion Comesario of Troop 96 of Kailua-Kona and his Eagle Scout Community Service Project to feed the hungry! Zion first came to us asking about a car show fundraiser as a possible service project as Motorhead, his mom and dad and their family business, Transmission Technology have been putting on successful car show events for the past 6 years. His lofty goal was to raise 5000 pounds of much needed food for the Hawaii Island Food Basket. The out come was very impressive as this young man in our community took the ball and ran with it coordinating a car show, food drive and can food castle building competition among various Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troops topping their goal by more than 2500 pounds of food. To promote the event and get a head start on the food drive, Zion and his fellow scouts set up an information booth and collection site each Friday afternoon at Walmart where they raised about 2000 pounds of food through the generosity of the community. On event day, Sack n Save allowed Zion and the scouts to collect food at the store entrance and OMG! Picture 200 twenty pound bags of rice! Plus cases and cases of Vienna Sausage! These were great for castle building for sure. What a blessing. And when the dust settled they topped their goal by raising over 7500 pounds of food, so much that the Food

Basket had to get a bigger truck to haul it all to the Food Basket! Yeah! The Car show had some really nice rides from full race cars that fired up their engines which fired up the crowd, to a trio of Cobra’s, some sweet motorcycles, VW’s and street rods! Zion would like to say Mahalo nui loa to the Lanihau Center , his Ohana, everyone who gave to the food drive, the car show participants, Sack n Save, LAVA 105, the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council and all the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for their participation. What an awesome community service project. We hope this will turn into an annual event. Congratulations Zion ! We are all very proud of you!
