This year Hawaii Motorhead Magazine celebrates our 8th year of publishing and what a ride its been! After a 25-year radio broadcasting career I came home one day fed up with all the politics and told my wife I needed to do something else. I didn’t know what, I just knew I needed to make a change. A few days later, I told her I was going to publish a motorsport magazine. Here we are 8 years later and she still thinks I’m crazy! But my wife is now not just our lead designer; she’s our business manager, social media manager and one of the biggest motorsport fans anywhere! Yes, I’m very blessed! I’m also blessed to be surrounded by so many talented phographers from Hawaii to Las Vegas that share their photos with us each month. Check out all their links and help support them as well. And remember, if you have pix and or a great story you’d like to share, hit us up. Hawaii Motorhead Magazine is YOUR magazine. And to our valued advertisers and readers from around the world, mahalo for your support! Enjoy the ride! -Nelson

Aloha racers and fellow car enthusiasts! Our summer weather has finally arrived - which means perfect conditions for autocross! BUT, by the time you read this article, our drivers have had to wait a full seven weeks for our next event on Sunday, July 29. That’s WAY too long for some of us. Some members have reported dreaming of racing around dancing orange traffic cones during a fitful sleep. So, with all that pent up energy, July 29th should be very interesting. And we will have both a new Subaru BRZ AND a new Scion FR-S competing! And we’ll get to try out our brand new timing system! But, you’ll have to read next month’s issue to find out the results. The most common question I hear from “new” drivers is: “How can I be faster?” Believe it or not - it’s not the car, it’s the driver! And, by becoming a better driver, you will be faster - and safer! One of the easiest ways is to really look at your “bad” driving habits & correct them. And the worst one is the proper use of the steering wheel. The steering wheel is pretty darn important - and is designed to be used a certain way. You need two hands to use it - not one. Hands should be placed at the 10 & 2 or 9 & 3 positions if you imagine the face of a clock. I find that it is easy to hook my thumbs on the wheel spokes at those positions and let my thumbs support the hanging weight of my arms with a relaxed grip. No one hand on the top of the wheel, no elbow out the window, no arm resting on the console, no arm in the lap driving with one finger at the bottom of the wheel. Keep those hands where they belong! So how do I turn? This is very important - but easy once you get the hang of it. To turn left, take your left hand & slide it along the rim towards your right hand with a loose grip never taking you hand off the wheel. Then to complete the turn, grip with you left hand & pull the wheel through your “loose” right hand keeping both hands on the wheel. To straighten the wheel, take your right hand, slide it across the rim towards the left hand & pull through - easy! To turn right, take your right hand, slide to the left & pull through. NEVER take a hand & reach across grabbing the inside of the wheel. Going over a bump or pothole can rip the wheel from your grip and possibly break a finger or wrist. And never cross your hands over each other. Practice and repetition will soon make this a new “good” habit. Our next race is Sunday, August 26, 2012. So, come out & see us (spectators free!) or better yet, sign up to drive. Check us out on Facebook, www.bigislandscca.org or sign up at www.motorsportreg.com. We’ll be looking for you! “Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F. Brian Dorr Regional Executive Big Island of Hawaii Region Sports Car Club of America

unkshop Pros from Dillingham Boulevard spearheaded the show which was held at Aloha Stadium and it turned out to be an awesome event. It wasn’t just a car show, it also featured a dog show and a bike show, very family oriented event. Although the weather was not on our side, 808 peeps still came out and supported the scene. Rain or shine the krews came out such as Imaginations, Team Makki, 808 Z club and Team Showcase, just to name a few. Nissan really represented in this show, one thing that caught my eye was Sam’s blue Skyline powered Siliva. This thing was a beauty…. engine bay was clean, nice paint job and a massive single turbo. In addition, there was a gang of Zs, one was a Veilside fitted wide body, two were sporting TE-37 SL limited edition Volks. This was the second major show in three weeks and I’m very happy to see that the car scene in Hawaii is still alive and well. 808 peeps, thank you again and lets keep it going and hope to get some support from the State to build us a track, that would be truly awesome!

Tiki
“Freaky Tiki Customs is a family thing” says the Big Island’s Jarrett Enriquez, as we talk about the company that his dad Lloyd Enriquez started while shooting Jarrett’s project seen here. It started in April 2010, when Jarrett bought the bike that started life as a ’94 Soft Tail Springer that someone had traded in at the local Kama’aina Nissan dealership. He proceeded to put his own spin on it, spraying just about everything flat black giving the springer kind of a rat bike look while he prepared for the big Labor Day run with his friends and family. After the Labor Day weekend Jarrett wanted to rebuild the bike into a chopper since everyone else had one. So, with the help of his dad, brother and uncles, another Freaky Tiki was underway. Jarrett didn’t want a trailer queen, or a bike that would take a week to clean after each ride so he carefully chose the pieces and the finishes to build a bike that would stand out in the crowd and one he could jump on and ride at a moments notice. The old frame was retired (for now) and a new Diamond frame was mocked up with a Big Bear front end and 250 rear tire. Jarrett is a tall guy so he extended the foot controls and opted for a pair of Joker Machine “Clip-On” bars that give the bike a lower, stretched out look. Jarrett had the DNA “Mammoth” wheels and hubs powder coated black and the nipples powder coated Fire Engine Yellow. Well fire engine yellow these days is not the same as the old fire engine yellow. Today’s fire engine yellow is Surprise! A fluorescent safety yellow. “WOW! That’s bight” was everyone’s first impression when they opened the box, and it wasn’t until the bike was being assembled that everyone finally agreed that “WOW! That looks really cool.”
August 2012 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | 13
The engine is an 80 cube hopped up with a 510 Crane Cam, Keith Black High Compression Pistons and a big ‘ol 45 Weber side draft. The 5 speed trans and open primary are Ultima units while the brakes and controls are by PM. Les Castro gets the credit for the paint and Greg Kobayashi did a great job on the old school flames, stripes and graphic work on the logos. If the logo on the tank looks familiar, it’s the Nova Uniao USA/Hawaii Brazilian Jiu Jitsu logo. When Jarrett is not riding or hanging out with his ohana, he trains with Kaynan Kaku and Charuto Verissimo at the Nove Uniao Puna Academy. Jarrett sends a big mahalo out to Pat Crivelho for the machine work on the custom billet parts and of course his wife Cheryl, his dad Lloyd, uncle Nohea, uncle Slade and the rest of Freaky Tiki & No Cry Babies ohana!

DRAG RACING

The Valley Isle Timing Association ran its NHRA Drag Racing Island Style event at Maui Raceway Park on July 21st, which included the Summit Sportsman and Summit Fast Gas 7.90 classes. It was Tony Gaspar in his Camaro over Thomas Cunningham in his Corvette to take the finals in the Sportsman class, while Jon Shirota in his dragster beat out Joey Amoral in his roadster as Joey turned on the red light in the finals. Super Street 10.90 saw Mark Caires in his Nova take the win over DJ Farias in his Nova and the win in Pro Gas 11.90 went to Daniel Vargas in his Isuzu pickup over Marjorie Hunkins in her Mustang. In Pro Street 12.90 Marcus Villaverde in his Vega beat Kula’s Irene Hultquist in her Pontiac and in the popular Summer Street class it was Shirley Caires in her Scion that was first to the stripe over Devin Duarte in his Toyota pickup. A nice field of Pro Bike racers showed up for the points meet and in the final it was Gabriel Kimbrell on his CBR600 taking the win over the quicker David Easland on his CBR1000 when David red lit at the starting line. In the Jr. Dragster 8.90 William Sanchez Jr. narrowly beat out Kaila Medeiros as William ran a 8.170 on his 8.15 dial in over Kaila’s 9.350 on her 9.31 dial in! The next race is set for Saturday, August 18 and will feature the “National Dragster Challenge” as the states best run for the Wally’s!

“Timing is everything”,
“being at the right place at the right time”, sayings we all hear a lot, but for Derrick Moreira of Puna, he really has a knack for it! Such is the case with his latest toy, this Wild ’41 Willy’s Coupe he acquired from Dennis Taylor of North Carolina. The 3 year build earned this Willy’s a “Pro Pick” in 2008 from the National Street Rod Association, many best in shows, 3 magazine covers and the cover of the NSRA 2009 calendar. For the last few years it’s been stashed away on the Big Island and this year made a big splash at Cruise Paradise 2012.
August 2012 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | 23 James Boyer from Sanford, North Carolina gets the credit for the build and although the Willy’s spent most of its life as a trailer queen, don’t let its pretty face fool you. The ZZ 502 Big Block Chevy topped with an 871 BDS Blower and a pair of Demon 750’s puts out 950 HP at the flywheel. Of course there is no lack of bling or detail with its fully polished heads and manifold and lots of billet accessories. The 400 Turbo got the full polish treatment as well and is stuffed with all the go fast goodies including a shift kit and a Continental 4500 Stall Converter. The rear end is a Ford 9” with 383 gears, a locker unit and 31 spline Moser Axels all hanging off a custom 4 link chassis with stainless steel inner rails. Polished Custom 12-inch Baer Brakes with Drilled rotors reside at all 4 corners as does the Air Ride suspension. Up front a Mustang II IFS is equipped with polished stainless steel upper and lower control arms and rack & pinion steering. The wheels are Boyd Coddington’s wrapped in low profile BF Goodrich rubber. The Dennis Taylor ’41 Willy’s body was sprayed with Lime Green & Candy Brandy Wine Plum by Augie Saccochio of Augies Art & Customs. Augie also did the amazing work on the ghost flames on the front fenders, hood and doors and the pin stripping inside and out. The interior is just as impressive with its 6-way power seats out of a 1996 Jaguar covered in custom dyed leather alligator skin designed upholstery. A Pioneer sound system with a 6-disc CD changer pump out the tunes and in the fully upholstered truck is a 20-inch Flat Screen TV with built in DVD player. There are no awards at Cruise Paradise, but you can bet if there were, this Wild Willy’s would have a few more under her belt.

In June we brought you part 1 of our 4 part series, ’32 Delivery. A 1932 Ford delivery truck that SGK Auto Body Inc. of Kona was commissioned to restore for an Oahu company wanting it to be a rolling billboard while delivering their goods on Oahu’s busy streets. Here in part 2, the wood supports, framework and floors were the main focus so that the re-skinned doors and panels could be hung and bodywork and alignment could begin. Check out all the rotted wood in pic #2. To restore these old cars and trucks you gotta have some mad woodworking skills too! Some of the old pieces were used as templates for the new pieces. Next SKG sorted through all the metal brackets, fabricating missing pieces as they moved ahead was also high priority at this point. The brackets, gas tank, firewall and other pieces were all sand blasted and re-finished. Next month assembly begins and mucho hours are spent on the fit and finish of the wood pieces and the metal body panels. Follow us here in Hawaii Motorhead Magazine each month as we take you through this restoration. From basket case to better than new, the finished product will blow you away!
