s ’ r o t i Ed note

The Holiday season means different things to different people. To many its to remember the “Real Reason of the Season”, the birth of Jesus Christ. Sadly, for many it’s a time of year that brings sad memories of loved ones lost in automobile accidents involving drunk driving. My Ohana and I would like to take this time to remind you not to drink and drive. Don’t let friends or family drink and drive. If you do drink, have a plan, designate a sober driver or call a cab. If you’re at a bar, remember most bars will call a cab for you. Let this Holiday Season be one to remember for all the right reasons! And as 2012 comes to a close, we would like to thank all of you, our readers, our advertisers, our photographers and contributors. Mahalo nui! We appreciate your business, your trust and your friendship! We have been so blessed this year to have made so many new friends who read and/or contribute from all over Hawaii, Las Vegas and the world. Our best wishes to you and your Ohana for the most wonderful Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year! Mele Kalikimaka Me Ka Hau’oli Makahiki Hou! Nelson, Monica, Makana, Hailey & Daivah

Kona’s Reno Lau, pictured with his wife Leimana and son Radon has added another killer toy to their stable of VW’s with this turbo charged street legal Baby Window.

In 2004, this 1957 VW made a splash on the cover of Hot VW magazine. Dubbed “Colorado Class Act” and built by Jamie Keelen in his garage at his home in Colorado. He purchased the Bug from a college shop teacher for $800 and proceeded to build the car of his dreams.

The car was first stripped from its old worn out pan. Jamie then went to work on a 1966 pan that he had sandblasted, raised the rear section 4” and fabricated his own ladder bar and coilover suspension set up. The body was then placed on the pan and a roll cage was fabricated from 1 5/8” seamless chromoly tubing. Jamie also fabricated the right hand drive conversion utilizing an Art Morrison steering column and center mount rackand-pinion from The Chassis Shop. The front suspension was modified with a JT aluminum beam shortened 6” and a set of CB Performance 2” dropped spindles. And since there would be no front brakes on this wild street fighter, spindle mounted Bogart racing wheels were used up front with M&H Front Runners. Jamie, a body and paint guy by trade, did all the bodywork and paint himself including the suicide fiberglass doors, fiberglass fenders and front hood. All the trim was shaved and a custom aluminum rear wing fabricated. Mucho hours were spent block sanding before the Ford Fiesta Orange was sprayed and buffed to a mirror finish. Jamie had Auto Weave Upholstery install the headliner then tackled the rest of the interior including the beautiful tinwork with some help from his friends at Kimco Race Cars. Check out the carbon fiber running boards, also the handy work of Jamie. More on page 8

The motor is a Heads Up Performance 2387cc monster based on an A-RPM two-piece case stuffed with Gene Berg 86mm crank, Carrillo Rods, 94mm Wiseco pistons and topped with Competition Eliminator heads and a Turbonetics TO 4B turbo. Engine builder Roger Crawford dyno tuned the big block to 322-horse power. The Colorado based ride we believe ran low 10’s on the West Coast before finding it’s way to Hawaii where on Maui with some tranny mods and electronics the new owner ran 9.60’s at 140mph before selling the bug to Garrett at Concept Auto in Hilo. Garrett had Ryan from Art Works laid the tribal flames with the air brushed graphics (check out how the eyes on the skull on the front hood seem to light up) and then covered it in clear with some pearl that I think really gives the bug a finished look. Garrett also swapped out the blacked out headlight and bullet light front blinkers for clear units and had Ryan air brush round split grills in the front fenders. Baby Window bumpers were also installed for a more streetcar look and for legal purposes. The bug now sports American Racing wheels with 235x60 (26”) street slicks out back and a new Marty Staggs turbo set up with Ron Lummus Racing Carb. Reno has started to put his own twist on things replacing the Lexan windows with glass and working on a new trans with plans of getting this street legal bug back into the 9’s! We’ll keep you posted!

Aloha racers and fellow car enthusiasts! Happy holidays! By the time you read this, November’s event will already have taken place - and the results will be on our website, on our Facebook page and in Hawaii Motorhead’s January issue. But I will tell you about our October 28 event! October 28 was an event that almost didn’t happen Remember that tsunami warning that rang out the evening before? Well, the Big Island was spared, but our club was definitely affected. It was sort of a “deja vu” moment, especially considering the fact that three years ago back in February, 2010 our “Day One” of our Evolution Performance Driving School ended up being cancelled! The phones were ringing the night before as club officials wondered what alternate plans had to be made and if the wave was actually going to hit. Were we going to race? Would the event be cancelled? Fortunately, the warning was called off and the organizers were able to go to bed and start dreaming of dodging orange cones instead of outrunning killer waves. And then came the call. At 2am, Roy Whitney, our Assistant Regional Executive and our person in charge of setting up and running our event called to say that his telecommunications job had called him and wanted him on the first plane out to Oahu to fix problems caused by the warning. Roy also keeps the club’s timing equipment. It was a mad dash south from Waimea to hook up with Roy (who lives in Kona) to get our timing equipment. Sort of hard to run an event without a timer that gives times to a thousandths of a second. Stopwatches? Yup, they were in the same box as the timing equipment! But, after all the drama, the event went off without a hitch. The weather was great. We had some new faces including Michael Oates’ sister Bridget Oates, who was visiting from the mainland. This was her very first autocross and considering that, she did quite well. The Oates’ Miata now had to perform for three drivers, Michael, Margie (Mrs. Oates) and Bridget! Watch out for Team Oates! Once again, Michael Oates was able to secure the fastest handicapped time of the day! He has basically secured “Top Driver of the Year.” But we still have two more events to count, November 25 and December 23! Mike was followed by Brandon Wilk, Allen Stueben, James Hains, Ed McMurray and Brittni Watanabe. The rest of us weren’t so lucky and placed in the slower time slots. And yes, I was still having Miata tuning problems. Hopefully that will be sorted out before the next event. But, that’s all part of the fun and competition. And that’s why they call it “racing” as opposed to “winning!” See the results on our website and Facebook page Everyone here at the Big Island SCCA family wishes all our fellow “car enthusiasts” and their families a safe and happy holiday season! Our next race is Sunday, December 23, 2012. So why not relieve some holiday stress? Come out & see us (spectators free!) or better yet, sign up to drive. Check us out on Facebook, www.bigislandscca.org or sign up at www.motorsportreg.com. We’ll be looking for you! Aloha!“Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F. Red

HEAT

Recall the 1988 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie “Red Heat”, Hector Comesario nicknamed his Myers Manx “Red Heat”. In the late 80s Hector’s first ‘kauwela’ was a Toyota Coupe also nicknamed “Red Heat”. Growing up in the birthplace of the VW Club of Hawaii. Kalihi, Hector was sure to see the VW scene flourish. VW Club of Hawaii’s president Todd Matsumoto was instrumental in legalizing these Buggies on the streets of Hawaii. With Todd’s Dune Runner “ZIGZAG”, and VW Club of Hawaii’s Vice-President Scorpion “Angie’s Toy”, and Hector’s “Red Heat” these Buggies are certainly setting the trend and setting the bar high. Everywhere Hector cruises on Oahu he’s sure to ‘turn heads’. Like some ‘Toy Boys’ Hector shifted his interest to the air cooled Volkswagen. After graduating from Farrington High School, Hector moved to Waipahu. By trade he’s currently one of the top body and paint ‘guru’ at Central Auto Body and Paint in Aiea. He’s also one of the sought out body and paint specialist by local car enthusiasts. In the plantation town of Waipahu was the beginning of an 8 year project of Hector’s Buggy. After thousands of man-hours and thousands of dollars his efforts certainly bear fruitful returns. Being that this lightweight hauler is a two-seater, son, Bryston, and daughter, Shayla, switch-off in accompanying dad in the club events such as the King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade or the Aloha Festivals Floral Parade. Hector painted his Myers Manx candy apple red by house of color. He accented the shinny red with gold leaf flames. Windshield is chopped and measures 8 inches. Interior decor and upholstery was wrapped by Alvin Cadelinia of Al’s Auto Upholstery in Waipahu. Power plant is 2074cc with 3rd and 4th ‘tranny’. Scat 78 ‘stroker’ crank and Scat rods. Engle FK-10 cam. Bug Pack 1.4 rockers. MSD flame thrower. Carburetion is by way of 48s. Rubbers to the asphalt wrapped on 15” x 12” (rear) and 15” x 3.5” Centerlines are 295/50 15 in the rear and 125s up front. No problem throwing wheelies. Hector passion for the Volkswagen brand could not have been more prevalent for without the unconditional love and support of Kathy. He owes a lot of quality time to his wife. If you see Hector in his “Red Heat” cruising the streets of Oahu, flash the shaka and share the aloha showing him that his hard work and efforts are certainly RED HEATing HOT. A super muddy day on Saturday, November 17 proved to be super challenging for most as the 808 MX/ATV Association held its second to the last race of the season at their 808 MX/ATV track next to the Hilo Drag Strip. Riders and their bikes had to be hosed down between motos to shed the extra 50 pounds of mud many carried over the finish line. Some of the most unrecognizable riders to cross the finish line were the Open Quad racers. And after a good hosing off it was #30 Jake Kron of Mountain View with the win. The season finals is set for Saturday, December 15. Gates open at 7am. $5 per person with children under 5 FREE! the tune of winning the Pro Street class of the Street Car Super Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on November 18th. Coughlin singled in his new JEGS Corvette in the final when his opponent Jose Manuel couldn’t make the round due to a broken engine block. Manuel earned the #1 qualifier position running a 5.730 sec./259.16 mph but Coughlin didn’t disappoint the fans putting on a real show for them in the finals with a blistering 254.18 mph pass! The Street Car Super Nationals draws entries each year from all over the US and Canada and this included 84 year old Willard Kinzer of Allen, Kentucky who earned the #1 qualifier position in the Extreme Drag Radial class with a 230.92 pass what was eliminated in the semi’s. The honors and the $5000 payday went to Eric Dillard of Ball Ground, Georgia who won over Dave Bowman of Fremont, California. Another big winner was San Antonio, Texas’ Mike Murillo who defeated California’s Richard Klann in the Outlaw 10.5 final to take home the giant $10,000 check.

This past month Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Oahu brought a spark of life to stock car racers and fans alike with a Test & Tune event at KRP and exciting news of the return of stock car racing to Oahu. DRAG RACING

Bruce Wheeler Photos

November 16th & 17th the Valley Isle Timing Association presented their United Auto Parts 2012 Season Finals at Maui Raceway Park in Pu’unene on Maui. Ron Capps, driver of the NAPA Fuel Funny Car was on hand once again this year signing autographs and hanging out with his Hawaii friends and fans. ‘60’s drag racer Bruce “Wheeler Dealer” Wheeler gives us a photo look at some of the great action that draws racers from the neighbor islands each year as well. In Friday nights Summit Racing Pro Bike competition it was Kenneth Harmon on his Harley Davidson defeating Dan Schaffer on his Suzuki and in the Summit Sportsman (12.00 – 19.00) Thomas Cunningham red lighted and gave the win to John Hultquist. On Saturday night it was a repeat for John Hultquist taking the win in the finals again as his opponent RJ Domingo red lit! In the Summit Pro Bike on Saturday night Gabriel Kimbrell riding his Honda over Kurt Furomoto on hi Suzuki. In the Jr. Dragster competition William Sanchez was able to capture the top spot on both Friday and Saturday night with a win over Tyler Sylva on Friday and Solomon Palad on Saturday. The 2013 season kicks off in February and we’ll post the schedule here in Hawaii Motorhead Magazine. Stay tuned!

It was a Double Header Weekend at Kalaeloa Raceway Park on November 10th & 11th with Sand Drags on Saturday Night and Hulacross on Sunday!!! What is Hulacross? Hulacross at Kalaeloa Raceway Park is an Extreme Off-Road Rally. The first of its kind on Oahu, Hulacross is a wheel2wheel and off-road time attack format and is flag2flag ACTION! Hulacross is just as much fun as it looks! Its “Run what you brung”, whether it’s a junkyard jalopy or a custom-built off-road rally car. Be sure to check out Kalaeloa Raceway Park’s website where you can see some great video on Hulacross plus rules, classes and schedule of events. www.kalaeloaracewaypark.com

Open House

SO-CAL SPEED SHOP Las Vegas

So-Cal Speed Shop opened its first store in Burbank, California just after the end of World War II in 1946. Though they say they struggled at time, So-Cal Speed Shop grew into a full-fledged speed shop servicing car racers throughout Southern California. In 1950, the So-Cal Speed Shop Racing Team pushed the limits of racing: reaching speeds that no other car had met at that time. Today the iconic So-Cal Speed Shop has expanded to provide for the auto needs or car enthusiasts around the country. In October of 2004, So-Cal Speed Shop opened its Las Vegas location on West Desert Inn Road and has become a fixture in the classic car scene. On October 28th, So-Cal Las Vegas held its 8th annual “Open House” where all were invited to bring their cars and have a good time! The Free event that’s held every year the week prior to the big SEMA Show featured free BBQ and music with hot rods, classics, lowriders, sleds and motorcycles filling the parking lot with rows and rows of eye candy. The Vegas “Lugnut” gives us a photo tour of this great event.

‘32Delivery In June we brought you part 1 of the SKG Auto Body ’32 Delivery that showed up at the Kona body shop on a flat bed car carrier held together with tie straps and rope. SKG Auto Body had been commissioned to restore the old delivery for an Oahu company with plans to use it as a rolling billboard of sorts to deliver its products on Oahu. SKG owner Scotty G and his crew not only had to restore all the metal, but all the wood too! So break out the table saw and router, here we go! T&T Towing seen dropping off the wreck in our June issue didn’t recognize the ’32 Delivery as they picked up the completed restoration. Here we see Scotty and his crew checking the fit and finish on the many doors, and documenting the countless hours of work that went into making sure all the hinges and locks of each of the 8 doors worked flawlessly.

I like the original look of the canvas top and also the way it lets light into entire interior. The panels are laser straight (inside and out) and the paint has been buffed to a mirror finish, again both inside and out. Tune in next month as we start our next restoration with SKG Auto Body. A 1960’s Mini Pick up! You gonna love this one!
