Kicking it back in gear!

Yes “We’re Back!” After taking a year off to start a new business, take a little break and regroup, my ohana & I are ready to kick it back in gear! We are very excited about our fresh, new on-line magazine that will have so much more to offer! A big mahalo to Tony Lee for helping us to create a whole new look & concept for our website. We’re hoping that our readers love it as much as we do! With our new on-line format we are no longer limited to the amount of coverage we can bring you. So, you will get more photos, more features, more race and event coverage and more great deals from our awesome advertisers! We can also bring you features, race and event coverage from all around the state. Everything motorsports! Drags, MotoX, Karting, SCCA, Dirt Track, Car Shows and Cruises.“If it’s got a motor, goes fast, makes noise or is just plain cool to look at, you’ll see it in the new Motorhead!” A couple of new features we’re really excited about is the “Motorhead News” button where we’ll bring you news weekly from the Motorhead nation so you don’t have to wait till next month to hear about. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter to hear what’s going on daily. Then, there’s the new “Motorhead Garage” where you can submit pix and a story about what’s in your garage. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, planes or trains we’ll feature it in the new “Motorhead Garage.” Even if you’re living somewhere else in the world you can send us your ride then tell all your friends and family to check out your ride at www.hawaiimotorhead.com! Simply email your photos & stories to editor@teammotorhead.com along with your contact information. In this our first issue we take a look back at the “Best of Motorhead” an editors pick of some of the coolest rides to be featured over the past 7 years. My first thought was to feature the top 3 rod’s, bike’s and truck’s but that proved to be an impossible task. So I ended up breaking them down into classes much like our car show events. Enjoy these cool rides maybe for the first time or all over again. Either way these are definitely worth a Hana Hou! Thank you for all the emails and Facebook post over the last year asking about Motorhead and don’t forget to bookmark us and follow us on Facebook and Twitter! Happy motoring! -Nelson

hen I set out to gather the “Best of Motorhead” feature rides it was a confirmation that my taste in cars, trucks and motorcycles are like my taste in music. I love them all…..Hawaiian, Country, Rock, Top 40 and Reggae. Classic Cars, Choppers, Local Boys, Resto Rods and Hot Rods! So I decided I should do an “Editors Picks” with the featured rides I thought were coolest to me. One of the first Hot Rods to jump out at me is Chucky Lewis’s 1932 Ford 5 Window Coupe. This thing just screams Hot Rod with its Blown BBC with Zoomie pipes, and Gasser wheels! What’s not to love? And with Chucky doing everything form body and paint to stitching up the upholstery this show winning over the top 1932 Ford is a true home built hot rod! Next up in the Rod class is another Hilo native, Stephan Paulos and his Chip Foose designed ’32 High Boy. With a build sheet a mile long Chip and his dad Sam Foose hand built the1 piece front end, roll pan and molded side mirrors that double as the windshield support for the custom 1 piece bent glass windshield. A custom hand fabricated Stainless Steel full length under car floor pan and the very first frame rails ever pinched (endorsed by Chip Foose) and all covered in hand rubbed laser black paint you can fall in to. Motorvation comes via a Blown SBC with more one-off pieces. Oh and the wheels are one-off Boyd Coddington’s.

Finally for the Rods I chose Ryan Simpson’s 1932 full fender roadster with its Southern California styling including the smoothed 3 piece hood, Duval windshield, custom roll pan and bobbed fenders. SBC power, independent rear suspension and a cockpit full of all the creature comforts and you’ve got a ride that was made for cruising paradise! We were even treated to a smoky burn out!

ssics With the price of rare finds like a 1948 Ford Woody (the last year for an actual wooden car) and the price of rare Hawaiian Koa wood, one can only imagine what the price tag on a combination of the two would be like for this sweet ride belonging to Kona’s Gawain Booth. Gawain ran a woody shop in California before moving to Hawaii where he commissioned Mike Nichols of Michigan to have the Koa wood fitted. Gawain borrowed some shop space from Roy Brizio at Roy Brizio’s Street Rods in San Fransico where with help from Roy and his guys turned the old wooden car into a world class street rod. A SBC transplant, Heidt’s IFS, air ride, leather seats, and my favorite part, the Koa headliner! The sexy coupe “6ECOUP” belonging to Hilo’s Jimmy Lucas gets a nod with it’s flawless magenta paint, fully detailed engine compartment with a tune port injected small block Chevy power plant, endless amounts of billet aluminum and steel braided lines, custom interior and classic hot rod wheels wrapped in Good Year rubber. This is one clean American classic! Y es we have sleds in Hawaii! In this case it’s a ‘49 Mercury sled, known to many as the quintessential hot rod! Another ride out of Jason Sanborn’s Speed Shop, just about every inch of the “Hawaiian Sled” has been modified, chopped, shaved, smoothed, frenched and slammed. Air ride and drop spindles drop the sled on to the pavement and the hot rod flat head gets it from A to B plenty fast. And you gotta love the flame throwers in the dual tip exhaust. Custom “Tiki” paint graphics, interior and Cadi hub caps round things off.

No matter how you classify Rob Ploski’s Pro Mod looking ‘57 Chevy…this is one badass customer! Driving it around town and clicking off a 9.30 pass through the mufflers at the Hilo Drag Strip surely backups the previous! And that was 6 years ago when 9.30’s for a street car was pretty damn fast! The monster 468 BB is equipped with Brodex heads, 2 stage nitrous, MSD Box and a 3 step rev limiter. So be careful if you’re looking for a street race! You just might run into Rob and his 9-second hot rod! The Ultimate “Street” Fighter! Harry Castro aka “Mr. Hemi” is the proud owner of this ’68 Blown HEMI Dodge Dart that started out as a basket case that had everyone, including Harry wondering “whatcha gonna do with dat?” Well 9 years, countless man hours and plenty kala later and you got one of the baddest MOPARS ever the hit the streets. and a 500 shot of NOS = a mind blowing 1000 plus HP at the rear wheels! Hope you got a fresh pair of BVD’s! Hilo’s Jason Sanborn has one Phat ’53! And it’s about as phat as they come. Built and Blown 454 BBC is a real beast putting out 800 horse power, Pro Street suspension with fatty tires out back, Mustang II in front with tubular A-arms, and air ride up front, a chopped top with suicide doors! And what the heck lets throw on some gasser wheels and wide whites and really stand out in a crowd!

Pure Kona Coffee Hauler! That’s how Gus & Cynthia Brocksen of Honaunau, Kona describe their 1933 Ford dump bed. And although they don’t use the little pick up in the fields, they do use her to take their brand of Kona Coffee to market. The all steel pick up features a 4” chop, widened steel rear fenders and a really nice hydraulic dump bed. SBC power, Corvette IRS and Brazilian Cherry wood in the bed are other modern updates. Inside a custom interior with ac and CD player make for a comfortable ride to market.

‘Ol Red has been in Neil & Jackie Felton’s family since 1972 when they pur-

Trucks chased it for a whopping $350! The 1937 Ford went through many changes over the years and a total restoration in ’03. Neil finished the truck for the ’09 Cruise Paradise event and it was a real crowd pleaser. Neil did all the work himself with the exception of the interior. He also milled and fabricated many of the custom pieces including billet parts like the wire looms, coil bracket, thermostat housing and slick air cleaner. New life for an ‘Ol friend and another 30 + years of cruising I’m sure. Last but not least for my truck picks is Bobby DeMattos’ 1929 Closed Cab pick up. The all steel body sits on a TCI frame with Roy Brizio x-member and was fitted with a narrowed drop tube axel up front while out back a Currie 9” is hung on stainless 4 bars. Bobby wanted a nostalgic 50’s hot rod look so he sprung for Coker wide whitewall and rims. A small block Chevy with TH350 transmission has enough power to get yourself in trouble and the Koa wood bed floors and stakes make this a Fine 29!

Mini Trucks

February 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 17

T

he term “Bag It” took on a whole new meaning with the introduction of air ride suspension years ago and it helped to renew the mini truck scene for sure. And here in Hawaii, mini’s are definitely back! Kevin & Malia Souza’s ’90 Toyota named “Drop & Destroy” is a great example. Not only is it bagged, but it’s clean shaven too! Kevin shaved the door handles, tailgate and tailgate latch. Even the interior received its time in the chair with the dash and all the vents being shaved for that smooth look. In order to lay frame a super C-notch was fabricated and the front and rear wheel wells were raised 3”to clear the big rollers. And, like the sticker on the back window say’s….this mini is “Built NOT Bought!” David Lyons of Hilo has got to have one of the cleanest street rides I have ever seen. Really. I mean you could eat off the engine on this truck! The S10 Xtreme was dropped and a fresh set of billet wheels added. A host of other chrome and billet after market goodies including gas filler, flamed rear view mirror, windshield wipers, and engine dress up components were also added. At the time we featured David’s ride it had never been in the rain, or even washed for that matter! Now that’s Xtreme! James Tan of Kailua Kona had been scraping off road reflectors with a slammed and bagged Mazda for a couple of years before he found this ’98 Nissan called “No Regrets” on the web. A truck that had inspired James for years. So he jumped at a chance to own it. The mini lays frame thanks to the 2” dropped spindles and modified a-arms up front and a reverse leverage 3 link in back. The interior is my favorite as everything was smoothed out and painted. I really like the custom fabricated door panels and center console that ties into the sub enclosure. The tonneau cover is hand fabricated too and actuates with air cylinders. This mini is over the top!

nd the award for the most awards in the Best of Motorhead Editors Picks goes to (insert drum roll here) Jason Sanborn! Yup! Jason walkS off with another best of vote for his Big Bad, Bagged Dodge 4X4. The first of the big & tall department on the island with an air ride set up, Jason’s Ram 3500 had it all. Large rollers, working stacks, performance programmer, all the after market bling, a booming audio system, custom paint graphics and powder coated suspension pieces. Can’t wait to see what comes out of Sanborn’s Speed Shop next!

o say Lawrence Egusa-Eckart of Kona, a local tile contractor likes big trucks would be an understatement if you ever saw him rolling down the road is his street legal monster truck. A custom air ride set up on the F350 Dually with over sized, over sized rollers, (yes they are twice as big as most) hydraulic steering, air brakes and stacked programmers this beast also hauls the mail. In the cabin a custom audio/visual system rocks the house and includes 7 video screens to keep each passenger entertained. This is how we roll!

e didn’t feature a lot of race cars in Motorhead but here are the top three I thought deserved a hana hou. First up, Chris Mantz and his street legal, show winning VW buggy. On the track or at the show it’s a force to be reckoned with. Pictured is the 2585cc big block race motor that has clicked off a best time of 10.06 with a buggy that weighs more than most might think. It’s a street legal show car so it carries a lot of extra weight. 1800 lbs. with Chris behind the wheel. In the show department you’ll find a shortened and fully detailed floor pan painted to match the body as was the front beam and chromoly roll cage. The motor and Mandeola trans and front suspension also got lots of attention that has earned the Stray Kat top honors at every show! In the imports, Kimo Kamanu’s 9 second Honda gets the vote with his Hawaiian Delite Racing CRX. Moto-vation comes from a JDM, GSR block with Probe pistons, Scat crank and a Type R head with Ferriera valves and springs. A STR intake, Peak Boost turbo manifold and a T-3, T-67 Hi Output turbo fed by a Golden Eagle fuel rail and 1000cc injectors. Still working at getting all that power to the ground Kimo say’s “it was a trip” going through the traps at over 130 miles an hour smoking the tires! I bet it was. Also on my best of racers list is Matt Briley’s 1968 Camaro SS/RS. From the blown 540 BB stuffed between the frame rails to the beautiful tin work and deep black paint what’s not to love about this Bad Bowtie. The Jackass Racing chassis is outfitted with Chassisworks components including the front tubular aarms and coil over setup with rack & pinion steering and Wilwood disc brakes. Out back a Fab 9 with Strange Engineering Ultra center section is hanging off a Chassisworks Eliminator II 4 link also equipped with Wilwood disc brakes. The scary motor is a Shafiroff Stage III topped with a 1071 Blower Shop blower. The scary part is with street rubber the BBC can run on pump gas! OMG!

VOLKSWAGENS

February 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 25

F

rom the “Did You See That” file how about another look at Mitch Berdon’s Blown 1967 VW Karman Ghia. With a complete body off restoration, every nut and bolt was touched and the laser straight body was sprayed with Sunrise orange paint. The new upholstery brought the interior to better than new condition. And then there’s the obvious….a Holley blower topped with Holley double pumper and big ‘ol bird catcher scoop that sticks out of the engine compartment a good foot that has everyone doing a double take. There’s just something about a VW bus that draws a crowd. It’s like any other classic I guess, it takes people back. Brings back memories of the good ‘ol days. Marc Tavares’s 1965 VW Kombi is a crowd pleaser no doubt! “People ask to take pictures with it and or stop to talk story about the bus they used to have” say’s Marc. The stock appearance with it’s 2 tone paint needed an update so Marc started with the stance. The bus was lowered in the rear by removing the gear reduction pieces and replacing it with a type 1 tranny. Marc then added a 4” narrowed front beam from Wagons West and air ride system and “Bad” disc brakes from Airkewld. The 18” Billet Specialties wheels and billet step rails bring the classic into the 21st century. The interior is stock with the exception of the suede headliner with raised Kombi and VW logos. And remember it’s a BUS not a van! Next we have Garrett Fujioka owner of Concept Auto Refinishing and his VW Manx Buggy. Garrett did the beautiful paint job while Art Works gets the credit for the incredible graphics. The turbo charged engine provides lots of get up and go and I do mean wheels up in the air get up and go. The sheet metal work is also outstanding. Check out the great fit and finish around the roll cage. They say “the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys!” This is one toy I’d love to have.

Tuners

February 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine /27

W

hen we talk about best tuners there are 3 rides that immediately come to mind. Dayne Rocha of Kohala with his 2000 Honda Civic is one of them. Lambo doors, a sweet body kit and custom camo painted wheels are what first grab your attention. But that was just the beginning as Dayne added a host of JDM parts and accessories, a FBSS air ride set up with big valves, ½ lines and a compressor for each wheel nicely done up in the trunk. Carbon fiber hood and accessories along with lots of billet goodies, an AV set up including a Play Station and all that Louis Vuitton material throughout the interior gave this tuner the Wow Factor! Now a Toyota Supra is no slouch from the factory! It’s one mean machine! But one with an LS motor like you would find in a new Corvette, topped with NOS and a shortened rear end that’ll run 10’s in the ¼ mile all day through the mufflers is what you get when you leave your Supra with Mike at Thunder Alley in Kawaihae! Michael Cambra of Kohala drives the Supra almost daily and drives it from Kohala to the Hilo Drag Strip (about a 150 miles round trip) and races it all day long with the AC blowing! Then drives it home. Now that’s cool! Many have heard of Timmy Cootey’s 600 plus horse power Honda Civic Hatchback out of Waimea on the Big Island. But many hadn’t seen it till we featured it Motorhead. Yes the rumors are true. 600 plus HP at the wheels in this little hot rod and its drivable thanks to a little thing called a turbo. Well in this case a very large turbo, but still very streetable! Timmy’s Civic also features many hard to find and usually very expensive JDM parts and accessories from Japan including many of the interior pieces. Just the shipping was enough to need a small loan. Big brakes and wheel studs also let you know there’s something more lurking under the hood!

CHOPPERS

February 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 29

I

n 2006 Psycles Inc. broke onto the scene when Shannon Warfield, a metal fabricator by trade built his first bike “Hat Trick” which was a combination of Old Skool meets New Skool. Now he had everyone’s attention. Including ours. Then came “Easy Money.” Shannon started out with a CAD drawing of what he was to call “Desire” but someone showed up with cash in hand and re-named it. From the Psycles Inc. Down-Low frame and single sided swing arm to the hand fabbed sheet metal it’s all custom. The “green like money” candy paint was done by Darin Calicdan and the custom graphics are the handy work of Ryan at Art Works. Power comes from a 113 cube S&S with one-off Psycles pipes and stacks. And you know how much the ladies like Louis Vuitton. Check out the custom saddle and fork covers! Another Big Island bike builder making a statement in 2006 is Clayton Baltero of Candy Shop Customs. His creation called Hot Dreams/Grey Dragon is a one-off custom that started with a highly modified Diamond Chassis soft tail frame. Clayton raked the frame 55 degrees, modified the backbone and stretched the swingarm 1 ½ inches. Crazy horse power is from a 127 cube Ultima engine equipped with S&S carb, Crane ignition and Martin Brothers pipes and is mated to an Accessories Unlimited 6-speed trans and BDL primary. POW! It’s a second time around the block for veteran biker Lloyd Enriquez who had been out of the bike scene for more than 10 years. But attending Uncle German’s funeral and talking stories with his old buddies, wouldn’t you know it he got bit by the bug all over again! Freaky Tiki Customs was born. The Freaky Tiki Custom here started with a custom designed frame by Deighton, stretched 6 inches over stock with 2 inches taken out of the down tubes. The frame was then fabricated my Manuel Soares and Pat Crivello of M&S Custom Works in Hilo. The front end is a 6 over springer with one-off billet handle bars and top three’s fabricated by Pat. Big ups to Big Boy of C&C Painting and Greg of Kobayashi Graphics for the killer paint. Freaky Tiki Customs…”it’s all about a Can Do Attitude!”

wilD Bike

February 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 31

es In the Wild Bike category I really like these three. First the 10 Day Wonder from Psycles Inc. When Shannon told us about his plan to build a roller in 10 days we thought he was crazy. But he did it with a few days to spare! Rob Walker of Waimea used his 2005 Fly Rite as a donor bike tossing the frame for this one-off custom from Psycles Inc. After the CAD drawing was laid out the custom frame was fabricated in the first 3 days followed by the custom milled triple trees. The wheels are 40 spoke chromies with a 215 up front and a 130 rear tire with sprotor brake drive system from Exile for those quick stops. A Rich Phillips seat and custom Psycles Inc. bars and Rob was rolling in less than 10 days! The super flake paint job is and 3D flames jump of the tank. And how about the 24k crown gas cap. Must be the worlds most expensive gas cap! Denny Duquette, owner of Island Performance & Off Road Kona makes the list with his radical oneoff custom from Roger Bourget. As if the mind blowing, head snapping, tire burning horse power of its 131 cube wasn’t enough of a scream. Add a T-28 Garrett Turbo and a 50 shot of NOS and you better be ready to hang on with both hands and your teeth! The turbo blows through a 48mm Mikuni carb and light up the huge 330 rear rubber. The 2006 “Fat Daddy” also has plenty to keep you shaking your head as you gaze over all the custom touches like the impressive show polished power plant with diamond cut barrels to the tribal engraved springer front end. The closer you look, the more there is to see! But better take a close look when it’s standing still, because you won’t have that chance once it’s spooled up and kickin’ okole! Another pick in the wild category is Darryl Sampaga’s tribute bike to his brother Aaron aka “Ink Daddy.” The build from Twisted Bike Worx started with an old shovel head. A BDL belt drive connects the ’73 shovel to the Slick Shift 5 speed. The custom candy powder coating is by Jason Aguiar. The frame is a Carolina Custom fitted with a springer front end and Sleezy Ape Hanger handle bars. Sweet Koa running boards are by Grumpy’s on Oahu. Finishing touches include the tattoo gun on the tank and the gold hammer for the jockey shifter. Aaron and Darryl built Darryl’s house so the hammer is a reminder of the bond between two brothers that shared a passion and many great memories that will live on forever.

PRO STREET

February 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 33

his is where it got tough again trying to pick my top 3 bikes, so, create more classes! Problem solved, not really. But, at least it made it a bit easier. Our first Pro Street is out of M&S Custom Works in Hilo. The modified kit bike started with a basket of parts and like most kits it was anything but “bolt together.” M&S specializes in helping customers modify their kit bikes and create something custom out of it. I believe the word Elegant describes the finished product. After stretching the tank and massaging the frame to accept the big motor Manuel shot the DuPont “Molten Orange” over the “Pot of Gold” base. Pat’s handy machine work is seen throughout, including the billet fender spacers and forward control adapters to fit the customer. Something you don’t get with a “one size fits all kit.” Gene-Paul Rivera of Kona became the new owner of this tribute bike for the late Chip Miller of Carlisle Events who produced some of the best auto swap meets in the country. Ron Jones at Jonesy’s Custom Cycles in Carlisle spared nothing with the build. Starting with a Carolina Customs frame with 2 over on the top tube, zero on the down and 38 degrees in the neck, Ron fitted a Progressive Airtail suspension out back and 42mm/2-inch extended forks and Hawg Halter brakes. But really let’s talk about the blown 124-cube motor I know you’re drooling over. The impressive motor is equipped with a shaft driven Magna-Charger supercharger and a trick open-close primary from Sputhe Engineering. A piece of history came with this one-off custom and Gene-Paul is glad to own it. What do you get when you give a welder fabricator the tools and a concept? Another showstopper from Psycles Inc. From hanabutta days Derick Vincent of Hilo has been surrounded by his uncles and cousins passing down the welding torch. Pair that with Psycles Inc., and you have “Kandy Angel.” The Psycles Inc one-off frame and swingarm are fitted with the springer front end. Dericks uncle Junior fabricated a custom roller slider guide that keeps the front and rear legs working together instead of fighting each other due to the Pro Street rake. Boosta fabricated the custom tank and oil bag. Yup! One side is for fuel and the other side is the oil bag. Derick fabricated the one-off dash, fenders and brackets and shot the candy paint! It’s always good to have an angel along for the ride!

e have a style of motorcycle unique to Hawaii that has been around for generations. The “Local Boy!” Full fendered, solo seat, running boards and crash guards are some of the things that help define the Local Boy style. Dado Kahaunaele’s ride started with a ’81 Shovel Head. The 88 cube was rebuilt with S&S ported and polished heads, rods, 510 Engle cam and single fire ignition. Crossover pipes also add to the Local Boy style while the Heritage front end and fender are accompanied by 39” wide bars, PM controls and super sweet billet brake rotors, GMA billet calipers and vintage style “Invaders” by Chica wrapped in Avon rubber. The okole got more of the same trick upgrades with billet brakes, chrome swingarm, chrome rigid struts and old skool hinged rear fender. A true Local Boy is how Ira Varize describes his 1947 FL Knucklehead that was purchased by his dad Manuel “Boy” Varize back in 1961 when his dad was just 18 years old. And with only 10,060 made, the Knucklehead is a pretty race piece. “The Knuckleheads have a tough look to um with that style of mo-

tor” say’s Ira. “I like the things like the jockey shift, Pasadena clutch, springer front end and the solo seat.” The legacy lives on! “I’m proud to ride the old knuck and like to thank my dad for keeping it for me. I guess he knew when I was born someday I would ride. Love you Dad!” “I always wanted a hot rod Local Boy” say’s Chad Matsumoto of Hilo as we shot his ride out of Twisted Bike Worx. Chris from TBW tells us “Chad showed up with a truck load of like a million parts he bought from someone with an idea of what he wanted. But the most challenging about the build would be to balance the hi-tech billet parts with an Old Skool Local Boy.” Their best guess was that the shovel head was a mid ‘80’s model. The tank is an original HD unit as is the oil tank that came from an old pan head. Another challenge was mating the 3” open belt drive with the running boards and the tank shifter needed modifying too. The 48 down draft Weber and billet wheels add the hot rod flavor. A modern twist on an old Local Boy.
