INSPECT D

THIS

wayne Inouye, a mild mannered County of Hawaii Supervising Building Inspector by day and off road enthusiast on the weekend, is the proud owner of this super clean, super duty! Dwayne purchased the 1999 Ford F250 about two and a half years ago from a fishing buddy. The low mileage truck still sports the original paint and with only 80,000 original miles the 7.3 liter is not even broken in yet! The fun started at Donny’s 4 Wheel Drive World with a 6 inch Pro Comp lift and 35 inch Pro Comp wheels and tires. With the truck looking pretty sweet Dwayne rode off into the Kona sunset and pulled into his garage where he found out that there was still room for more lift before hitting the ceiling. So six months later he was back at Donny’s for more lift and taller tires! This time around Donny’s 4 Wheel Drive added another three and a half inches with Warrior shackles for a total of 9 inches of lift and also added a couple of inches with a set of 37 x 13.5 x 20” Nitto Mud Grapplers wrapped around BMF 20x12” wheels. Pro Comp MX6 reservoir shocks soak up the bumps to all the good fishing spots while the dual Pro Comp stabilizer shocks take care of any bump steer. Donny’s fabricated the rear shock cross member mounts for the dual rear shocks and dropped the front sway bar mounts to keep the sway bar functional. We like the way the massive dual exhaust exits in front of the rear tires that give a full view of the trick suspension from the rear. The shocks and stainless steel brake lines really stand out against the fresh under coating Dwayne applied at home. Amp Research Power Steps aide with climbing in and out of the cockpit while the comforts like window tint and Wet Okole seat covers came from right next door to Donny’s at C-Thru Glass Tinting and Pacific Motorsports. The rain guards and bug shield are factory options while the

headlights and clear markers are aftermarket units. The interior also features an Alpine CD/DVD/MP3 deck with 4 way Alpine amp, Bazooka tube for some bottom end thump and Focus mids and tweeters. Dwayne was playing one of our favorite movies during the photo shoot, Fast & the Furious. The popular 7.3 liter power plant was treated to a few tricks to boost the boat pulling horse power and torque and they include an Edge Performance Programmer, AFE intake and custom monster exhaust. So go ahead! Inspect this! Oh and Kevyn–Bren, (Dwayne’s little girl) dad said to tell you “Someday this might be yours!” Photos and story by Nelson Ray Parker

HOT ROD PARTS TRUCK Welcome to another episode of SKG Auto Body Inc.’s “Hot Rod Shop Truck” build. Last month the frame and suspension came together as well as final fabrication of all mounting brackets on the cab, front end sheet metal and bed before it would be ready for body filler and paint. This month the hand fabricated bed got primed and had some spray on bed liner applied. The filler cap and mounting brackets were welded into the cool beer keg fuel tank and tested for leaks so the Koa wood bed floor can be finished. Scotty and the boys mocked up the rest of the drive train accessories like the engine pulleys, alternator, water pump and radiator. In the cab the Ididit tilt steering wheel column, Lokar shifter, parking brake, pedals and interior gauges are installed and wired up!

February 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 9

The custom exhaust system is fabricated with Magnaflow mufflers, Jet Coated shorty headers and a bunch of 3 inch tubing. As we wrap up this months episode we see the whole crew jumping in on the body work to get the body ready for paint and graphics and its debut at the Project Grad Car Show and Concert, Saturday, February 6th at Kealakehe High Schools Football field. Next month we’ll feature SKG’s “Hot Rod Shop Truck” as Motorhead’s Truck of the Month as a couple of years of planning and gathering parts and accessories rolls out of SKG Auto Body Inc. and down the highway!

VIET NAM VETS

T

here are two groups of people that I have the highest respect for (aside from fellow Martial Artist), they’re Bikers & People in the Military, especially War Vets. Bikers of course because I admire & respect those who share my same passion for the freedom felt from riding, and Military because without them, and those who have lost their lives in War, we would not have that freedom! Plus my Dad was a Vietnam Vet & my grandfather a WWII Vet. I know that in the past, many M/C’s were formed because of men returning back from War had nothing to come home to and still longed for that sense of Brotherhood & also the Military type structure that a Motorcycle club also lives by. This month we feature an M/C that not only are Bonded together by War, but also who’s main purpose is to bring our POW’s and MIA brothers back Home! The Viet Nam Vets Motorcycle Club started back in the early 80’s by a group of guys that rode together and not only shared their love of motorcycles but enjoyed the brotherhood and camaraderie with men that had experienced the war in Vietnam and all that comes with those experiences. Many of the Brothers were treated very badly when they returned from Vietnam. They were made to feel that the country they went over there to defend was not behind them and didn’t appreciate their sacrifices and suffering. Over 55,000 men were killed in Vietnam and hundreds of thousands more were wounded and disabled. Many men were captured and held as prisoners of war or POW’s for years and over 1,200 men are still missing in action or MIA’s. TheViet NamVets are mandated to do everything in their power to help return all of the POW’s and force our government to account for all of the MIA’s and bring them home. The VNV M/C came to understand that once the last Vietnam Vet dies so does the Club. They began to refer to themselves as the “Dinosaurs” meaning that they would just die off and fade away like the Dinosaurs did. Many Club members didn’t want that to happen so about ten years ago the Legacy Vets M/C was started as a continuation club. Today the two clubs are one. We are one club with two patches which allows them to continue on long after the last Vietnam Vet is gone. The Legacy Vets M/C is for all Veterans of any branch of service and from any Military conflict from December 1975 till today. The Patch represents all that the Vets have been through. The color Red is for the Blood Shed & lives lost and the black is for mourning. The eagle represents Freedom. In the eagle’s mouth is a bomb representing war, and in the eagle’s claws is Vietnam which has been spilt to represent the war between the two sides. And you’ll notice the eagle is looking back, for the soldiers left behind or that lost their lives. The Viet Nam Vets - Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club is world wide with chapters all over Europe, Asia, Australia and every state in the United States Of America including 3 chapters in Hawaii. They claim no territory and don’t get involved with any other club’s business. Please visit their web site at www.vnvlegacyvetsmchawaii-a.com you can find links to many other chapters around the world. Big Mahalo to my good friend VNV M/C member Doug Costales of Kona, who is a fellow Frisco Biker and Vietnam Vet from 1975. Thanks for sharing the story my braddah, And thank you and your brothers for your service to our great country! Until next month, Uncle Jazzy…. Brraaapp Brrraaappp!!

THAT FAULTY EGR

Aloha everyone, I just learned something new this past week which was mind boggling and quite interesting to all of us who got involved. I was asked to diagnose and give my opinion on a 1999 Ford F-150 that had a transmission torque converter shudder. I would like thank that shop for this opportunity because I learned something new and mahalo for your patience. The symptom was a consistent shudder after TCC (Torque Converter Control) applied. The shudder would stop after cancelling overdrive or kick down on accelerator 4th to 3rd on passing gear. Check engine light was not on and the shop had told me that the vehicle was already scanned by their technician and no DTC retrieved. So basically I didn’t have to re-invent the wheel just road test the vehicle. I was very impress on how consistent this symptom was, and I was ready to condemned the Transmission Torque Converter. It felt like a damaged lock-up disc or a faulty TC applied piston. The shop had told me that was what they thought it would be, so they had already ordered a new torque converter and was on its way. Just to satisfy my curiosity, I hooked up my scanner and checked TCC command. To my astonishment, I noticed that the shudder occurred consistently only after TCC lock-up is fully applied and that the engine would run very poor like a cylinder misfire and can be mistakenly feel like a TC shudder. Being in the business for 23 years, my diagnostic experience with TCC application may not be the best, but thank God for Snap-On scanners and Genesis diagnostic equipments. They just don’t lie!! After detecting the poor engine performance, my scanner on KOER retrieved a faulty O2 sensor bank 1 upstream lean and EGR performance valve stuck. I know for certainty that a faulty EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), although a non-related transmission component, can alter the transmission shift characteristics. A fault in the EGR monitoring system can prevent overdrive or TCC operation. EGR faults can also cause misfires by causing lean mixtures in the multiple cylinders. It can be tricky to determine whether you’re dealing with a lock-up or a misfire drivability issue. In general, if the condition only shows up during TCC apply, suspect a converter clutch shudder. If it shows up after the TCC is fully applied, suspect a misfire or an engine issue. A misfire can be caused by more than just a bad electrical part. It could be an incorrect air/fuel ratio due to lean mixture, incorrect EGR flow, or mechanical engine problems such as leaky valves or blown head gasket. We were authorized to replace the EGR valve and the shudder did not return. The vehicle performance improved. The vehicle ran normal. The customer and the other shop was very happy and we all enjoyed lunch together. Thank you for the challenge! Respectfully, Vic Comesario

BAD BOW TIE

Matt

Briley, owner of Air Conditioning Specialist in Kona is smiling from ear to ear for good reason, as we caught him loading up his 1968 Camaro SS/RS from Jackass Racing Chassis new location in Kona on Kaiwi Street. He’s got One Bad Bow Tie! Steve and Lisa Perreira of Jackass Racing Chassis bought the ’68 Camaro and planned to make a pro street car for Lisa out of it since the body was in such great shape. “I don’t usually cut into a body that’s as nice as this one was” says Steve. But Matt had his own ideas. Something to stuff his Shafirnoff BBC into! Steve and Lisa are Chassisworks dealers so the Jackass Racing Chassis Pro Street mild tube chassis features Chassisworks components including the front tubular A-arms and coilover set up with rack & pinion steering and Wilwood disc brakes. Out back a Fab9 rear end housing with Strange Engineering Ultra center section and 40 spline gun drilled axels hang off a Chassisworks Eliminator II 4-link also equipped with Wilwood discs. Jackass Racing Chassis is also well known for his custom tin work did first class job on the aluminum interior panels, floors, tubs and dash. Steve also fabbed the custom wheelie bars and parachute mounts. Matt wired up the car and installed all the gauges before dropping the Scot Shafiroff Stage III, Blown 540 Big Block Chevy between the frame rails. The scary part is with street legal rubber the BBC can actually run on pump gas. OMG! The scary motor is built for up to 1500hp and is topped with a 1071 Blower Shop Blower 16% overdriven for 12 pounds of boost and Dyno’d at 1290hp @ 6800 rpm. To date the end result is a best so far 8.92 @ 148.33mph in the quarter mile. “It’s a work in progress with help from Steve we should have the suspension dialed in soon” says Matt who also would like to thank the Hall Brothers and sons and the other racers that helped get it together at the “OutLaws.” Photos and story by Nelson Ray Parker Race photo by Riddiford Racing Photos

W

hen many of us think of a new car dealership, we think of somewhere we go to buy a new or pre-owned car or truck and get our warranty work done. But at Kona Nissan and Kona Dodge we found there was a whole lot more to this dealership than that! It started with our tour of the showroom where a new Nissan Xterra sat with a tent attached to the rear of the stylish SUV that opened up into the vehicle! WOW!!! How cool is this we thought as we started picturing ourselves camping at our

favorite spot with this super neat accessory. Then, sitting next to the Xterra was a beautiful black Titan with racks that could hold surfboards, one man canoes or just about anything you could come up with and it also featured a bike rack that could hold up to four bikes! So this led us to ask a host of questions about these and other accessories that were offered where we thought we just bought new or preowned cars and got our warranty work. They have Nismo and Mopar performance parts and accessories. From headers, intakes and exhaust to suspension upgrades and lift kits and all of it can be installed by their factory trained Nissan and Dodge technicians! Now can you imagine our surprise when they rolled up to the showroom and showed us a Dodge 4x4 with Lambo doors installed at their dealership. Lambo doors! Basically, if they make, they can get it, and they can install it! They’ll even take care of your service and performance upgrades if you own another brand. And, for the month of February, you can save 20% off accessories. Oh yeah!!! They also sell tires too! Name brand tires at discount prices. This month Kona Nissan and Kona Dodge are helping you stretch your dollar with their buy 3 tires and get the 4th for just a dollar sale. And now that you’ve got the killer deal on your tires, make them last by having your wheels balanced and your vehicle alignment done with the Worlds #1 diagnostic wheel balancer, the Hunter Road Force wheel balancing machine and the Hawk Eye High Definition Digital Imaging wheel alignment rack. The only ones of its kind on the West side of the Big Island . So stop on in to Kona Nissan and Kona Dodge and check out the great deals on accessories, tires and service. And be sure to say howzit to Joe Kokua while you’re there!

OLD DOG New TRICKS

T

en thousands bikes in ten years! Big Dog Motorcycles celebrated their 10 year anniversary in 2004 with a handful of choppers with one off anniversary paint schemes including this 2004 Anniversary Chopper of Scott Gesling of SKG Auto Body Inc. in Kona. Scotty purchased the Big Dog from his friend John and made a few changes and blew a few things up since owning the bike with a split personality paint job. Scotty, a member of Koa Puna has been riding the dog hard on weekends and every event possible including neighbor island events. The fully polished 107 cube S&S with its S&S Super G carburetor wears the 10 Year Anniversary logo etched into the side cover and provides plenty of ground pounding, tire smoking horse power evident by the need for another rear tire. Scotty tells us the 250 Dunlop Elite is a great tire if you ride hard, rain or shine. The powerful 4 piston PM calipers brakes helps bring it all to a stand still in a hurry. The Baker 6 speed is now hooked up to a massive 4

inch high dollar HITECH Belt Drive. I not only like the way it looks, I like the way it sounds! Kinda like a gear drive set up…. pretty nuts! Listen for it when you see Scotty rollin’ up. The paint really caught Scotty’s eye with its split personality. “I like the right side best” says Scotty. “I like the purple and metal look.” You’d swear its two different bikes. Scotty has a few more changes on the way including a new animal skin seat and some trick mirrors and controls to set this dog apart from the rest of the pack. Scotty wanted to end the story by saying “Thanks John for letting me have it!” Photos & story by Nelson Parker

Boston Basil’s OMG. I knew the food would be good. I had no idea it would be that good. Their slogan is, “In just moments… you’re family.” By the end of our food tasting, this Hawaiian girl asked to be adopted by the owner. To say the food is ono is an understatement. It was extraordinary! Terry and Jack Hilton bought Basil’s Restaurant almost 3 years ago, and being from Boston, renamed it BOSTON BASIL’S and being Italian, brought to it real Italian food. And it’s served the only way Italian food should be served: authentic, delicious, and lots of it. The warmth of the Italian décor and the staff make you feel instantly at home, but the food begs your undivided attention. Restaurant Manager, Julie Whitener gave us a food tasting extravaganza as she wowed us first with an amazing and huge Antipasto Salad (we could‘ve fed two or three more people). It was divine. The second audible WOW came in unison as Julie brought us some Cheese Ravioli fried to a crispy delight and served with homemade marinara sauce (try this one soon because it’s yummy). We’re still drooling- somewhere between WOW and OMG when Julie brings us two gourmet pizzas, the Meat Lovers special with all their choice meat toppings and a Chicken Broccoli Pizza with creamy Alfredo Sauce. To describe all the ingredients hardly does it justice. It’s really very good and you need to check it out asap. They have over 30 toppings with masterful creations and build your own pies. Webster defines gourmet as “good judge of fine food and drink.” Well this humble but amazing eatery should be called Boston Basil’s Gourmet Restaurant and Pizzeria, because it is. They make their own sauces, meatballs, Lasagna, and more- all from scratch- home style. Terry says, “we serve the quality of food I’d serve my family.” And Julie adds, “this is not fast food, everything is made to order.” Then, we’re served two pasta entrees- their famous Stuffed Eggplant Parmigiana with Ricotta- an enhanced version of the classic and Terry’s own creation, a scrumptious Shrimp Florentine with Spinach, Alfredo Sauce, and Italian cheeses. Nelson, Jeannie, and I were in heaven by now… raving and bumbling on about how impressed we were. We could barely eat another bite but kept on because it was too good to stop. Then, Julie served us the final blow of WOW with dessert: an Italian Lemon Cake with Mascarpone Filling and Raspberry Sauce that was so delicious. I couldn’t believe how light it tasted (she assured us it was because she took out all the calories just before serving). The other slice of heaven was Tiramisu. I’ve had Tiramisu many times and thought it was an overrated dessert- too much sweet and fluff for me. But it sure looked better than any I’d ever Voted Best Italian Retaurant 2 years in a row!

February 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 19 seen before. So I dug in. It was the best Tiramisu I’d ever tasted in my life, true story. It’s gourmet! I drove away thinking, I love my job. And I loved Boston Basil’s and highly recommend y’all get down there first chance you get. The menu is huge, the food is outstanding, and the generous servings begs you to bring family and friends. There’s a full service bar with an extensive wine and beer selection and the view of Kailua Bay makes it perfect. They have a great dine in lunch special right now: Buy one entrée and get one free on weekdays, from 11am-12:30pm! There’s music five nites a week from Wednesday thru Sunday. Wednesday is mixed music nite, Thursday nite features Hawaiian music, Friday and Saturday nites are for Jazz and Blues and Sunday nites are just for Jazz. Enjoy great music in an intimate setting upstairs at BB’s Topside Lounge, a private banquet room with a full service bar that seats up to 40 people and overlooks Kailua Bay. This is an ideal spot for clubs, groups, and private parties for lunch, dinner, and evening events. Check out Boston Basil’s across from Hulihee Palace and prepare to be wowed. This eatery is more than worth the short and nice walk from one of several places to park in downtown Kailua. They’re open 7 days a week from 11am-930pm and with today’s technology, you can check out their entire menu online and even call for easy curb-side pickup or TO GO orders!! Ride hard, eat well, and be happy.

Don’s Grill

I love Don’s Grill and have eaten there for many years. Most Hilo folks know and love Don’s Grill too and the place is always busy. It’s been a very popular spot for over 20 years for a reason- the food is undeniably and reliably good. Don Hoota started this family restaurant back in 1988 and cooks up a homestyle menu in a nice and clean enclosed diner that keeps you dry and warm in the famous Hilo rain. Once in the front door, you immediately feel comfortable and are greeted by the super friendly staff and a daily specials board with an array of ono grindz. The breakfast menu features eggs and omelette specials plus hotcakes and sweet bread French toast. The lunch menu features awesome classics like Reuben, Philly steak, and Clubhouse Sandwiches and build your own Burgers. And all the local plate lunch favorites including Chopped Steak, Pork Cutlet, Teriyaki and BBQ Ribs and much more. Don went to culinary school in San Francisco and also serves Linguine with Clam Sauce or Bolognese style, Pasta Primavera, and Lasagna, a popular dish here. From Loco Moco, 9 different salads, vegetarian dishes and even saimin- there’s an amazing variety sure to please everyone! Don’s Grill serves up good quality food at very affordable prices. At our food tasting, we enjoyed a Chinese Chicken Salad, a mixed plate of grilled fish, veal cutlet, and teriyaki chicken, and rotisserie chicken- a house specialty. I chomped on the salad which was heaping with almonds, chicken, and lots of mixed veggies and had to get in on the mixed plate before the guys finished it off. The rotisserie chicken was done perfectly- crispy and yummy. All plate lunch entrees are served with hot vegetables and a roll and they‘re one of the few places that still make gravy from scratch. They also have ono desserts like homemade pies and apple lumpia ala mode, plus a wine list and a keiki menu. Next time you’re in Hilo and you want great food, great value, and great service- check out Don’s Grill on Hinano Street, off Piilani. They’re open Tue-Sun and serve breakfast all day long. Call 935-9920. Ride hard, eat well, and be happy.

January 16, 2010 was a beautiful day for the season opener of team A’AMA’s 2010 winter series. 12 drivers headed back out on the rocks for some fun, friendly and very competetive RC Rock Crawling action, Big Island Style! Kings Landing was the scheduled battle grounds for that day and is one of the favorite spots to ‘Crawl’ amongst many of the drivers, including myself. Throughout the day, all three courses had it’s own winning driver. So the excitement level was on the high side throughout. But as the sun began to beat down on the basalt, each driver felt the pressure to just even finish the course. So slowly the scores started to tell who will be top driver for the day. So a huge congratulation to Ryan (reigning champ) for succssefuly proving his title is no joke, by knocking off 11 other drivers to secure the first win of the season. Ashly F. held his own and took 2nd place today with smart, and calm driving just a few points behind the champ. Mike sumi had a well deserved third place spot, even with a serious breakage in the third course, his low scores early on saved him from getting passed by Jerome S. who got thrown into fourth place today. All in all, as usuall FUN,FUN,FUN. The day ended at the usual spot, R/C Heaven. For some On-Road Racing and R/C drift car action. Interested in joinign the fun? Come on down for the next competition and see what it’s all about. Stay posted as 2010 will have some added R/C fun. Look for reports on R/C on road racing, drifting, Monster Truck Monster Jam style R/C racing. Visit R/C Heaven on maka’ala st. for all the details, or just stop in to say hi. Much thanks to Abe of R/C Heaven, Jays Auto repair LLC., Aloha Machine & Welding and team A’AMA.
