SCCA Solo 2 Event, May 23, 2010 What a day! One shower after another, the biggest problem for the Big Island of Hawaii Region’s Solo was how frequently the tops went up and down! We went to grid under what seems like the gloomiest of rain conditions, but that was the days worst, and we bounced from rain to sun all day long. Course design was handled by our own “Men in Black” (sunglasses anyway) team of Brandon Wilk and Nicholas Buscher. The two of them had us seeing aliens at every turn, but put together a great course for the event. One of the great things about Solo 2 is we change the track layout every event. We rely on our course designer’s imagination and their intuition on how to make a course that challenges, but is also fun for our competitors. Brandon and Nick did an excellent job of giving us a fast and free flowing layout that worked well in the wet to damp conditions. It would have worked in the dry too, if we had any. The guys took advantage of the new and old track layout to create some new elements, and everybody agreed it was a winner, even if it was a little alien. We have had a couple of calls from Cobra owners who ask about coming out to our events. It is rare that one makes it to an event, but Robert Walker brought his down from Waimea, thinking he might have gotten away from some of the wind and rain up there. Not so this day in Hilo! While the car is beautiful, you know that light weight, high horsepower, and gobs of torque can be a handful in the wet, and that put a damper on Robert’s ability to show off the Cobra’s potential. But he kept the black part down, and kept the car under control, completing all four of his runs without getting snake-bit. The Miata’s had a good day, without the torque and lower horsepower; the nimble little cars brought smiles to driver’s faces wet or damp. Some were sliding, some were precise, but all were lots of fun. James Hains, Glenn Swanson, Jim Cohn, Brian Dorr, Rick Bowers and Melanie Boudar all ran in the Mazdas, with the Rx7 of Chris Godoy, and the Protégé of Conn Walleman also part of the Mazda contingent. Making waves with his Honda S2000 was Chris Jay who is running very quickly in the potent Honda. The duo of Wilk & Buscher traded cars and doubled their runs and Brittany Watanabe’s Tercel Turbo turned times too. Doug Flood’s Mini Cooper S was in its element, but had his class to himself for this event. With so many Mini’s on this island, its surprising that we don’t have more a come out to our events, the car has go-kart like handling, is a blast to drive, and works in wet or dry, so come on Mini Owners, come out and give Doug some competition! Check the Motorhead calendar or our website for upcoming events!

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department – the Department of Defense. President Harry Truman followed up with a proclamation on February 20, 1950, praising the work of military services at home and abroad. Armed Forces Day showcases the military equipment to the population they are protecting. This day also provides a time in which to honor and acknowledge the people serving in the Armed Forces of the United State . And if you missed the Classic Car Show at the Armed Forces Day, you can catch the Hawaii Classic Cruiser’s “Cruise Night” every first Saturday night at 6pm at Freddy’s Restaurant in Hilo . Let the Good Times Roll!

Hello Racers, May was a great month for kart racing with several new karts showing up to work out the new bugs. Roland Hall with his new tag, Darin king with his KT100 sportsman. Conan Hall driving the JR1 club kart for the first time gave Cole Prettyman a hard time all day with some real close racing. Sorry we don’t have any action pictures this month due to a camera break down. Here are some pictures of how we all get to the track. Some in big trucks and others come in little cars. No matter how you get there it’s going to be a great day of fun. Our next race is on July 3rd. with the play day on the 4th. For more info please call Tom Sluder at 808-939-9746.

SOBER RIDERS MOTORCYCLE CLUB
A
s far as for Therapy for me, as in mental AND physical, Riding Bikes is definitely my choice of antidotes. So I would also assume that the same could be said for someone in recovery. I mean what better source of getting negative thoughts out of that stressed out brain of yours, or maybe even to replace that needed Adrenaline sometimes provided by substances, than having the wind in your hair (or scalp in my case) , the freedom of the open road on your Machine and Brotherhood to remind you you’ve got support & Ohana to share your good times & help you through the bad.. So when I heard about the Sober Riders MC, I thought what a cool Idea! I knew they were a large club on the Mainland, but slowly started seeing some patches over here. Then lil by lil there was a pretty good sized Chapter here on the Big Island. How was I able to see them grow?….I’m the one who sews their members patches on. LOL. I met the Big Island Chapter President “Slick” one day when he came by my shop to see if I could sew on MC Patches. A few of his members even had me build them seats. So hey if you send ME business, you’re definitely a friend of mine!! LOL. Their brief history is explained that the club was founded with an idea on Christmas Eve, 1991. Pooh Bear is the only member still on our roster since that day. Members came and went. They worked protocol until Sober Riders Motorcycle Association was established on December 10th, 1994. Pooh Bear, Papa Two, Tiny, and Hunny are the only members still on the roles today that were there when they first got accepted into the Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs. On May 5th 2001 The Sober Riders became an MC. They have been joined by many of the finest people who have found recovery from the seat of a motorcycle. Today they are one of the largest clubs of our type in the world. This fellowship remains strong for it does not rely on friendship to bind its members to one another.“Although many such relationships have flourished among us, it is our mutual commitment to the Patch that enables us to travel a thousand miles, meet someone we had never met, and be able to call them brother.”. Many Clubs are bonded by a common bond aside from the Motorcycle. Such as, shared Hobbies, Nationalities or occupations or unions. I think the commitment to live a Sober Life is as any good a reason! Big Island Chapter President John “Slick” Kilkenny & I got together for a drink (JUICE…helloooo!!) and a talk story session on how the Big Isle Chapter was formed in 2008. Andy “Fly” Smith is a Pilot that lives here part time and got permission from National to fly his colors while living here. Soon fellow Idaho member “Slick” also moved here and so they together enough members to become a probate chapter. Which is kind of like the whole club being a prospect at one time to prove it is capable of building a solid chapter before actually being made official. After being approved by National and getting Blessing from the main MC’s here, the Club was sanctioned in 2008 and through throwing poker runs & attending everyone’s events, they have grown pretty quick. Slick, originally from California, had been a Sober Rider for numerous years and had the most experience in M.C’s, was made Chapter President. To Join, there is a 6 month Prospect period and a commitment must be made to enter a recover program upon joining, if not already in a program , such as NA, AA and Al Anon. Slick has been through all of it from drugs to alcohol abuse and feels a big part his making it was the Brotherhood of the Club. He often attends meetings with his patched members and new prospects to help support their struggle. When I asked John why someone would want to join Sober Riders he explained, “What sets us apart from other “Associations or Organizations (who normally just get together for weekend runs) is that we are an actual MC. We have a commitment to the Patch and to the Brother Hood that goes along with being an MC. Aside from Family, work & health, all members expected to have loyalty and respect for the Club and Patch and the Commitment that is expected with it…We’re not just Weekend Warriors….We’re Bikers.” If your’re interested in finding out more about The Sober Riders MC just stop by Big Island Harley Davidson where Slick is in Sales. Slick…Big Mahalo Bro! And I am lovin that Street Glide over there…..we’ll talk.

TOW/HAUL MODE Aloha everyone. I had lots of feed back from our last month’s article “To Hunt or Not to Hunt”. I would like to thank all those who called and expressed their mahalos and gratitude. But, many of you also had a question about the Tow/Haul switch and the type of benefit you’ll gain when activated. First of all not all vehicles will have this feature. The General Motors industry came up with this benefit. Some of their pickup trucks equipped with an Allison, 4L65E and the new 6L60E transmissions have these benefits. The Tow/Haul is switch located on the manual selector column usually at the end of the selector. When energized, the resistance to the (EPC) Electronic Pressure Control solenoid changes. The ECM will signal the EPC to increase main line pressure for better holding power, snappier and firmer shifts. Without this feature, there has been many complaint of overlap shifts or what they call slide into gear when carrying heavy load or pulling a trailer and generally creates tremendous heat. The Tow/Haul mode is going to be more effective in the city. Basically it raises your shift points allowing you to gain a more power over a longer band. It will hold the gear longer between shifts so you’ll have more power climbing a hill and the truck does not down shift and underpowered you when you least expect it. Some of these trucks do not have an overdrive cancellation switch but rather a D321 selector. When pulling a trailer or climbing a hill I recommend to activate your Tow/Haul and put your selector on 3 not D or else it will hunt back and fourth. On the flat level highway you may use your discretion based on your RPM and the type of load you’re pulling. Always refer to your owners manual for guidelines and instructions, or you may call Transmission Technology in Hilo 935-1600 behind Dukes Kilauea Shell gas station or in Kona behind Big Island Auto Parts next to Daleco Battery and Radiator. I would like to wish all the fathers a wonderful happy father’s day and blessings to each one of you. Respectfully, Vic Comesario

V
eteran racer and street rodder Howard Moreira and his sweetheart Ginger of Kea’au invited me over to their home to see their latest creations, these beautiful purple ‘31 and forest green ‘34 roadsters. One of which has some neat history behind it. The 1931 is an ex-Bonneville salt flat racer from back in the late 40’s and early 50’s and at that time held the roadster class speed record of 98 mph with its flat head power plant! Note the vents at the bottom of the firewall. A tell tale sign of a Bonneville racer. Howard found the body and frame in Ocean View that was considered by the owner as “scrap metal” when Howard rescued it. The body had been chopped, channeled and sectioned and the ’32 frame boxed. The front suspension is all new as are the Wilwood disc brakes. Out Back a Ford 8” rear end still utilizes the old Buggy Spring (no shocks) set up and Howard says it rides like a Cadi! Power comes from a new 355 SBC with dual quads a mild cam and MSD ignition. Howard says he’d like to put a flat head back in it someday. The 1934 roadster was a basket case, “a real mess” says Howard, and said a friend had told him about the car that was sitting in Ka’u. It took Howard a total of 8 months working on it day and night to restore it to the beautiful roadster you see here. The new 355 SBC is a real beast with Brownfield heads, Weiand blower, MSD ignition and a pair of Edlebrock 600 Durashine carburetors. The Raven glass body sits on a ’34 frame with 4 link front and rear, 9” rear end and a built TH350. Howard & Ginger pride themselves on doing just about everything at their shop including the hand built tops on both cars made from round tubing and covered with Mercedes material. They also stitched up the interiors with some help from Mike Dupont. The ’31 has a Tea’s seat while the ’34 has a pair of Subaru buckets that have been cut down. On the ’31 the OG Steward and Warner gauges were rebuilt by SW and look amazing! Howard also did the paint and the Painless wiring on both cars but called in Greg Kobayashi to do the pin striping and the real gold leaf on the ’34. Both cars ride on 17 x 10, 17 x 8 custom Boyd Coddington “Junk Yard Dog” wheels wrapped in Falken high speed rated rubber. What a beautiful pair!

The big question I had for Howard and Ginger was “how do you decide which one of your half dozen or so hot rods are you gonna go cruisin’ in today?”

Kea’au High School Auto Show
On Thursday, April 29, 2010 Kea’au High School held its Annual Auto Show at the schools auto shop and once again it gave the students, alumni and guest an eye full of cool rides from monster trucks, tuners, race cars and motorcycles and an ear full of bass with its car audio sound off competition! Live music and lots of fun and games also kept the crowds busy. Hawaii’s fastest wahine, Terri Martins and her alcohol dragster team showed off Terri’s dragster and even fired it up to give everyone a taste of what big horse power sounds like. Ryan K and his Ohana had an impressive display with his monster truck and rock crawling buggy climbing on the tire of the monster truck! Talk about some serious articulation!

Bow Tie
In 1991, Robert “Bobby” Teixeira and his brother flew to Ohio to see a big motorcycle swamp race that they had heard so much about and while there came across this old 1946 Chevy pick up truck. Bobby brought the truck back to Oahu where he lived at the time and used it everyday for work in a rock quarry and on weekends he and his brothers would load it up with motorcycles and head for Kahuku. Bobby did a bunch of work on the truck before moving to the Big Island but left the truck behind selling it to a friend. About 2 and a half years ago his buddy called him and asked if he wanted the truck back, so he jumped at the chance! First thing Bobby wanted to do was update the trucks power planet and front suspension which came from a Malibu donor car. The 350 Chevy is backed by a 700R4 trans and an Olds 8 ¾ rear end with Posi Traction. The huge power brake booster is from a late model Jeep and a 4 core radiator was modified to fit the 1946 radiator support and grill. The bed was showing signs of wear and tear so new panels and hardware was installed and Russell Gomes sprayed the beautiful two tone blue paint! For you old Chevy guys, yes the 1946 pick ups did not have the raised Chevrolet name in the tailgate. So Bobby modified a 1947 tailgate to
June 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 17
fit to get the look he wanted. Oak floors and stainless steel hardware should last another 60 some odd years. Other mods include electric windshield wipers and modified parking lights and blinkers. Dual bulbs were used in the parking lights on the headlight housing so outboard blinkers were not necessary. The steel wheels are wrapped in Coker wide whitewall tires and all new body trim, grill and stainless steel bumpers front and rear keep the classic 1946 pick up look. The interior was sewn up by Chiquita and also includes modern touches like an under dash AC unit and a Sony CD/AM/FM deck. Bobby doesn’t ride dirt bikes as much as he used to, but note the tow hitch in the rear! Just in case he decides to go riding he can load the bikes up in the trailer instead of the bed like the good old days.

Cruisin’ for Grinds at Killer Tacos I love my gig! I get to meet great people, help them get the word out about their businesses and on occasion, I get to eat some of the best grinds on the Island! Cruisin’ for Grinds this month takes us to Kailua-Kona where we had a great time at a well know place called Killer Tacos! And where we also heard one of the greatest stories ever. You see, in November of last year, two buddies and business partners, Don Hooser & John Edwards found out that one of their favorite places to eat was closing! This couldn’t be! What would they do? How about buy the place? So they did! Their wives Lydia and Lisa say its still sinking in as they run the day to day operations of the popular restaurant. They kept much of the crew including Wai, who not only knows her stuff, but knows her customers and how they like their meals! I gotta say, what a fun atmosphere! From the friendly service to the special codes the customers use like “long black chick” which is code for the Long Board Burrito with black beans and chicken! OK, what was the Long Board Naked again? LOL! The regulars love the personal touch and everyone loves the quick service. No long waits at Killer Tacos! In fact while I was there I was amazed at how fast they crank out everyone’s orders. And when their regular customers come in its like they read their minds and start on their orders before they reach the front of the line. How cool is that! After all, you don’t want to spend your entire lunch break waiting for your food. I had the Long Board Burrito with chicken and as with all their burritos you have a choice of the skirts (wraps), white flour, brown whole wheat, red tomato flour or green spinach flour skirts. Choose between Spanish rice or brown rice, which is very popular and a healthier choice. Then there’s the home made salsa, guacamole, sour cream and cheese. You can choose from roasted chicken, spicy ground beef or Big Island Kalua Pig! And they ain’t kiddin’ when they say “Let us roll you a fatty!” It was big and soooooo ono! Oh, and then there’s the Barn Yard, its their biggest burrito. 3 kinds of meat and the works! Better bring your appetite or a friend to share this one with. Now if you like fish or are a vegetarian they can roll you up a fatty no problem. The fish burrito is very popular and the spicy cream sauce is a winner. My second dish (not that I needed one after the fatty burrito) was a taco salad. I couldn’t decide on my meat and asked Wai to surprise me, so she whipped one up with all three meats! From the presentation to the incredible flavor, the Killer Taco Salad has made its way onto my “must try” list. Another thing you’ll love is the prices. Good food at a great price and the everyday “Lunch Deal” with 2 hard tacos and a medium drink will only set you back $4.99! A fun place with great service and good grinds! Killer Tacos in Kailua-Kona gets 2 finger licking good - Cruisin’ for Grinds thumbs up!
