Like years past, at the 6th Annual Transmission Technology Run to the Sun Poker Run & Car Show, the Kona sunshine had many running for the shade as we were blessed with another beautiful day. Presented by KWXX and Spikes Clubhouse Waikoloa, Run to the Sun started with the poker run simultaneously at both Transmission Technology stores in Hilo and Kona at 9am and worked their way to Waimea for a poker stop at NAPA Auto Parts, then to Waikoloa for another poker stop at Spikes Clubhouse Waikoloa before heading to the Big K-Mart in Kona where they would draw their last 2 cards. (continues on pg. 4)

And when the dust settled it was Shane Manister with a straight that had the best 5 card poker hand and won the Trip to Las Vegas from Hawaii Motorhead Magazine. Entry fee’s and admission to the show were free with a canned food item for the Hawaii Island Food basket, and the generosity of the Big Island people showed as we filled 6 barrels of food! Show goers got to vote for their favorites in 11 classes with the People’s Choice Awards and had over 100 cars, bikes and trucks to choose from. This year we also had lots of ono food thanks to the Boy Scouts, Spikes Clubhouse Waikoloa, The Burger Shack, Aunty Peaches Poi Balls and shaved ice and snacks with the Alices Ohana! Mahalo to our sponsors Transmission Technology, Big K-Mart, KWXX, Spikes Clubhouse Waikoloa, Big Island Toyota, Island Performance & Off Road, NAPA Auto Parts, Big Island Service Center, Big Island Power, Ironman and Alvin’s Signs & Graphics. Stay tuned to Motorhead for more great events coming in 2010!

faith All you need is a little FAITH! Keith Kiyojima of Hilo and custom builder Joe Richardson of Triple C Cycles in Hilo give thanks and praise to God, “through him we find our strength” says Joe, who built the bike now deemed “Faith” from a roller that Keith had purchased from a friend. The soft tail frame is stretched 6 inches on the backbone with a 45 degree rake on the neck and 5 on the trees and also features an inverted front end and custom handle bars. Triple C Cycles, an authorized dealer for Mid West Cycles, Ultima Products, Custom Chrome, V-Twin, Demon Cycles and Malibu Motorcycle Works bolted up a 120 cube Made In The U.S.A. Ultima supplied “Ass Kicker” billet wheels (with matching pulleys and rotors) measure 18x10 with 300 rubber in the rear and 21’s up front. The sheet metal was smoothed and sprayed an eye poppin’ Candy Emerald Green over a gold base with realistic fire by Peter Naho’opi’i of Wicked Airbrush, Triple C Cycles in house painter. Peter enlisted the help of Jast Hegerfeldt of Fine Point Graphic.com for the Gold Leaf graphics and in the end buried it all under multiple layers of clear then sanded and buffed it to a mirror finish. The custom seat is the handy work of Thompson Upholstery. Pictured are Keith’s kids Ayzha, seated with a photo of her oldest brother CJ, who’s serving in the military, Cyrus with the white t-shirt and Keilen. Keith wanted to give thanks to the lord for all the blessings in his life and to his friends and family for all of their support. He and the boys at Triple C Cycles also wanted to give respect to a great legend in our motorcycle world, the late Uncle German Waipa. “We love you and miss you…..God Bless you and your Ohana.”

April 18, 2010 Solo 2 Perfect weather greeted the April event, dry and sunny, with a few clouds to relieve the heat later in the day. Hawke Walleman put together another great course for us, and everyone was pleased with the result. With the changes in the track, we are able to run more open courses, making it both easier and more fun for cars to negotiate the go kart track. Jevon Sanborn shared Hawke’s Honda CRX, and they both pushed for fast time of day. Also on hand were Sky Olson, and his monster Subaru WRX Sti, nicknamed GRIP. Grip makes serious horsepower, but the light and agile Honda was more than a match. F. Brian Dorr, was also present, in his modified Miata was also burning up the track, and posting fast times. There were also some spirited drives from new threats, Rick Bowers in a nicely prepped Miata in STR class, and Chris Jay in a Honda S2000. Both are very quick, both are silver cars, maybe there is something we can learn here? Jim Hains also took to the track in the hotly contested E stock class with his Miata, and was matched against Michael and Margie Oates. The Jim/Bob racing team had a failing clutch, and was forced to withdraw, or there would have been five Miatas contesting E stock! Still, there was plenty of action as Nick Bushcer and Brandon Wilk traded cars to insure they had adequate competition. Both are quick, and you just don’t expect a Ford pickup and a VW diesel to fly like they do in the hands of these boys! It is something to watch, plenty of tire smoke, lots of three-wheel motoring, but all good! Another great event, and thanks to everyone including Janis Parker and Paul Sears who came out just to support the event. Paul is off to be an official at Elkart Lake’s Road America for the June Sprints, so maybe we’ll see some great pictures from there, or hopefully Paul will bring back some bratwurst, the first food of choice for racers at Road America. Next event is scheduled for May 23, be sure to pre-register – check our website for details! www.BigIslandSCCA.org

TO HUNT or NOT TO HUNT

Amazingly, these new late model vehicles are coming out more sophisticated with an electronic control system that is built entirely integrated, and the manufactures are making it more complicated to diagnose. A non related transmission component as simple as a restricted air filter or even a vacuum leak can interfere with the computer signals and alter the shift characteristic of your computerized electronic transmission. But my topic this month is geared towards those that has poor driving habits. Our vehicles will only run and function properly if we understand the controls and features of it. Majority of all the new cars being sold at the dealerships are equipped with a four speed overdrive automatic transmission and some up to six speed. Now were not talking mainland here guys were talking an Island. How often do we use overdrive or six speed? Not very much right! Only when you’re crossing saddle road on the new comfortable paved highway going very fast like sailing with the wind and hopefully there isn’t an officer waiting for you near Pohakaloa training camp. Sounds familiar guys? I’m sure, because I’ve been there and we all need to slow down and respect the law. When you get closer to town, your vehicle is left on overdrive mode or on six speed. Then you notice your vehicle intermittently jerks or start to search for the right gear at approximately 30mph to 40mph. This gear confusion or jerking is called hunting. This symptom occurs when the driver does not cancel overdrive in city traffic, stop and go and hilly terrain. The computer or command control intermittently gets confused and does not know when to signal drive or overdrive, so it begins to hunt back and forth. Sometimes you will not feel the hunting sensations but your TCM, PCM or ECM is actually hunting for the right shift point. Failure to cancel your overdrive in town will result in a premature wear in the overdrive band, over-run clutch pack and even your torque converter clutch lining. Continuous symptom may result in future costly repairs. We are all trying to maximize fuel efficientcy so use your discretion wisely when to cancel your overdrive. You certainly don’t want to cancel your overdrive going steady 50mph because your fuel consumption will be excessive and you could use that extra gear to lower your engine RPM. I usually cancel mine during stop and go traffic, city driving limit below 30mph, steep hills and when I’m pulling my trailer. The overdrive cancel button is usually located on your manual selector on your column shifter or near to the selector plate if your shifter is on the floor. Some owners manual will explain directions when to use the overdrive and the switch location. You may also cancel your overdrive coming down a hill to create engine breaking and raise your RPM so you don’t have to ride your brakes. It is a good habit to practice and will save you a lot of money and headaches! To hunt or not to hunt that is the question? If you have any questions regarding any transmission related issues or would like a free road test and fluid check, please contact Transmission Technology our certified staff is ready to assist you. In Kona next to Daleco Batteries behind Big Island Auto Parts call 331-8310. In Hilo behind Dukes Kilauea Shell Gas Station call 935-1600. I would like to take this time to wish all the mothers a Happy Mothers Day. We love you! Special mahalo to all those who have participated in the 6th annual Run To The Sun Poker Run and Car Show, and also, the Aloha Council Boys Scouts of America Makahiki events celerbrating 100 years of scouting. My family and I had a blast and what a pleasure enthusiastically meeting all of you! Respectfully, Vic Comesario

James

Tan of Kailua-Kona has been scraping reflectors off the road for a few years now with his Mazda mini truck that had been heavily modified and bagged. And, even though his truck was always “Under Construction” and didn’t sport show quality paint, he wowed the crowds at local car shows with it’s custom fabrication and it’s laid out stance. Over the years James had been inspired by a truck called “No Regrets” that he hoped one day his truck would be like. So can you imagine his surprise when he found that very truck for sale on the web! This 1998 Nissan Frontier is out of Cali where Ryan Nelson built the truck before it changed hands and Chad Cooper put his spin on it. The truck lays frame thanks to the 2” dropped spindles and modified A-Arms up front and a reverse leverage 3 link in back. The body was dropped four inches with one-inch lowered cab mounts, and traditional three-inch body drop with a rolled pinch. Twin Viair 380’s with Slam Specialties bags, 3/8 inch SMC valves and 5 gallon glass air tank in the bed handle the ride height while Toyota Tacoma rotors up front and re-drilled stock rotors out back take care of bringing it all to a stop. Trailer fenders at all 4 corners were used as inner fender wells and house the 19-inch TSW Vortex wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxy 4s. The body mods are crazy with shaved door handles, antenna, squirters, wheel opening body lines, wipers, third brake light, cab seams, and a handmade one-piece metal wiper cowl smoothed to flow with the body lines! Sick! The factory valance was cut and molded for bigger Yukon billet grille and Yukon fog lights, and a smooth tailgate, roll pan skin, radiused taillight corners will have you scratchin’ your head as you start to notice the many subtle and not so subtle changes. Other cool body mods include the hand built rockers and tonneau cover made from box tube with an aluminum skin with radiused corners and the front of the bed is cut out to have the cover sit flush, and actuates with air cylinders. The license plate is also air actuated and rises out of the tailgate. Dave Prater squirted the Standox Toyota silver base and Nissan 350Z Blue over the smoothed out body while Jessie Ortiz painted the interior pieces. In the cockpit, Nissan Pulsar seats were lowered and cut down 8 inches and covered in pewter illusions and the one-off center console with a molded G35 shifter ring molded in also host the billet air ride joy sticks, JVC head unit, Saw DVD player and Visualogic 7-inch screen. The console ties into the custom sub enclosure with three 15 inch Memphis Car Audio subs and powered by Rockford amps. Under the hood is detailed with lots of one-off touches including the intake and custom engine cover fabricated from part of a Nissan Xterra hood. The trailer fenders and side aprons were smoothed and moved to flow with the edge of the fender and the razor was also taken to the core support and firewall for a clean shave. So although James had to sell his Mazda truck to purchase his fantasy ride, he’ll be the first to tell you there are “no regrets!” Photos and story by Nelson Ray Parker

Mantz

MANX

Jim Riddiford Photo

There’s a Stray Kat in the neighborhood, but you’ve got to be pretty fast if you plan on trying to catch him! Chris Mantz of Stray Kat Motorsports, Hilo, is the cool kat behind the wheel of this 1967 Super Street VW Manx buggy that is not only one of the nicest rides around, it’s also one of the fastest. At the Big Island Auto Clubs’ Bug-In this past April 24th & 25th at the Hilo Drag Strip, Chris not only ripped off the fastest time with a 10.06 at 137mph but was the #1 qualifier and took home the big Best of Show trophy in the car show at the event. I gotta give a tip of the old hat to Chris and his crew for taking the street legal (yes I have personally witnessed Chris on the streets as he participated in Cruise Paradise 2006) to

May 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 15

a 10.89 with a 100 shot of nitrous with his street set up and also ripping off the 10.06 with a buggy that’s a lot heavier than most might think. Because it’s street legal and a show car, it carries a lot of extra weight. 1800 lbs with Chris behind the wheel! Things started with Larry Hernandez shortening the 1967 floor pan by 15 inches. Larry also narrowed the rear 10 inches and raised the transmission 5 inches. The front end was narrowed 8 inches and laid back. 28mm torsion bars, adjustable spring plates and Chassis Works Vari-shock 2 way adjustable race shocks round off the suspension. Bogart racing wheels with 26x10 Hoosier’s out back and M&H front runners up front bolt up to the trick Gear One 4 piston disc brakes at all 4 corners. The transmission is a Mendeola 4 speed with a 10 inch ring and pinion built by Sam at Rancho Performance. (more on page 16)

16 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / May 2010

Jim Riddiford Photo (continued from page 15)

Next the body was cut open and raised 3 inches before being fit to the chassis. This also allows for the lower seat mount which keeps Chris nicely tucked into the Chromoly roll cage that was fabricated and tig welded by Larry Matsumoto.

Theo Bianchini gets the credit for the body work while Garrett at Concept Auto Refinishing gets the nod for the beautiful paint work. Ryan at Art Works lent his talents for the graphics and Dan DeLuz Jr. of Dan D Designs took care of the pin striping and vinyl lettering. Shifting now to the horse power by GEERS Engineering you’ll find an 88 x 96.7 (2585cc) big block stuffed with a Moldex billet crank, Carrillo rods, CT Pistons, Geers Engineering billet cam, Autocraft Heads with Crower rockers topped with 62mm Terminators. The engine dyno tested 320 horse power at the flywheel naturally aspirated. The RLR (Ron Lummus Racing) nitrous kit is set up for 200 shot but the 10.06 run at Bug-in was with a 125 shot. Sure looks like runs into the 9’s are right around the corner! For the street, Chris swaps out the race Mandeola trans for a Type 1 transaxle and a smaller 88 x 90.5 (2264cc) powerhouse. Since completion this mighty Mantz Manx has built a collection of trophies and has been featured in Hot VW Magazine, April ’06, is used in the Rancho Performance ads, in ’05 took 1st place Pro Street class at the Auto Value Super Show, and in ’06 1st place Dune Buggy, Peoples Choice “Best Graphics” and the won the Aaron Sampaga Memorial Award. In 2009 Chris won the Super Street points competition at the Big Island Hot Rod Associations, Stray Kat Import King series and in 2010 the winning continues with 1st place People’s Choice award for Best VW at the Project Grad Car Show & Concert, Best of Show at Bug-in 2010 where he also finished 2nd after hurting the motor in the semi finals and could not make the final round of competition. Chris and his beautiful family pictured, wife Pua, daughters Jolie (sitting on mom), Jett (sitting on dad) and Jordyn send a big Mahalo nui loa to his many friends, supporters and sponsors including Geers Engineering, Fred Simpson of Performance Technology, Sam at Rancho Performance, Concept Auto Refinishing, NAPA Auto Parts, Kubo’s Customs, Aloha Mufflers, LAT Lubricants and the many sponsors of the Stray Kat Import King series for 2010 including the Big Island Hot Rod Association, Air Conditioning Specialist, Wally’s Auto Body, Bears Racing, C.A.R.R.S., Affordable Auto Center and Kobay Garage Doors. We’ll see you at the May 8th Stray Kat Import King Series for more heads up import action!

Howzit Big Island and welcome to beautiful Waimea! Where the grass is green, the people are friendly, and the food is amazing! Everybody at some point finds themselves passing through our great little town and now there is another great reason to STOP! Welcome to Pakini Grill! Pakini Grill, the brainchild of four lifelong Honoka’a friends born and raised on the Hamakua Coast , brothers Brandon, Justin, and Ryan Lee, along with Keoni Regidor, were determined to bring great Hawaiian regional cooking back to Waimea. The result of a dream held since high school, Pakini Grill fills the void left by other establishments in offering a fun, familyoriented environment that has been missing in local restaurants. Bull’s-eye! Executive Chef Keoni Regidor studied culinary arts at HCC at UH Hilo and tells us his first job was peeling shrimp for $7 an hour at Bubba Gumps , Ala Moana. He says he learned a lot just by watching the chefs and experiencing what goes on in the kitchen. Locally, many have come to know Keoni’s creations at Merriman’s Waikoloa where he and fellow chef Brian, also at Pakini Grill both cooked. With Keoni’s longtime passion for creating exciting dishes, combined with his chef experience in restaurants on both O’ahu and the Big Island , it certainly translates into a wonderful experience at the Grill. A must try is Pakini Grill’s signature dish, a Six-Hour Braised Short Rib served with kim chee, rice, and hot hoisin ginger sauce, is just one of the many items that will keep you coming back. As greeter (and local celeb) Aunty Betty, famous for her outrageous collection of glasses will tell you….”the baby back ribs is so ono, it falls off the bone.” Another favorite with locals and visitors alike is the BBQ Pork Sandwich. Prepared with the same Guava

May 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 21

BBQ sauce as the ribs makes it another Pakini Grill signature dish. Since I have tried many dishes at Pakini Grill since they opened, Keoni let me sample the smoked meat (pork) and onion appetizer. So good! You know you local when you get one killer smoke meat…right! And, they smoke ‘um right there in their built-in smoke house! Keawe smoked with a special guava jelly sauce and served with onions, green onions and sliced daikon. This is a winner! The Calamari steak on the apetizer menu is my new favorite dish and my new favorite way to eat calamari. Panko and furikake crusted and topped with a tomato poke with ogo, inamona, chile flake and Hawaiian salt. The white sauce is a pickled ginger and wasabi aioli and the dark sauce is a merin and shoyu reduction. In my book, there is just no other way to have it! You’ll love the atmosphere, you’ll love the people and you’ll definitely love the food! A great place for lunch and dinner and now Pakini Grill is serving delicious breakfast on Sundays! So be sure to STOP! in Waimea the next time you come through our quiet little town and enjoy Pakini Grill in the Waimea Shopping Center on Mamalahoa Highway . Pakini Grill promises to satisfy those in search of an authentically local menu.
