September 2012 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | 3
While November is the start of the holiday season for many, for others it’s the end of a season. From drag racing to motocross, we are down to the final race(s) where every point won or lost could mean a championship or not! The holidays are also a big time for the motorsport community to give back and help the less fortunate in our communities. Great events each year such as Toys for Tots and benefit car shows that raise money, food and gifts for local Food Banks, pantries and charities so our nations most valuable resource, our children, can experience the joy of Christmas. Here at Hawaii Motorhead Magazine we are reaching out to all the clubs and organizations that have fundraising events during this time of giving, to let us help you get the word out. Hawaii Motorhead Magazine reaches tens of thousands of people each month and can be a great vehicle to promote your cause. Send us your information, posters, photos or whatever you got via email or Facebook and we’ll go to work for you. Be sure to “Like Us” on Facebook to stay on top everything motorsports though out Hawaii and Las Vegas. www.facebook.com/hawaiimotorhead This month we say Aloha and welcome on board to the “Lugnut” from Las Vegas! Randall is our latest addition to the Motorhead Ohana of photographers and contributors that help us cover motorsports events and feature rides from around the planet. See his photos in the VW’s at Town Square, BugORama, and also the Wurst Dam Car Show in this issue. So “How do I get my car in your magazine?” Yup, that’s still a question we get a lot. If you have a ride you’d like to see in Motorhead, send us a few sample photos and some info and we’ll see where it fits. It can be a show quality car, truck or motorcycle and be a featured ride. Or it can be a daily driver or a project that we can feature in our new Motorhead Garage. You can even send us updates on the progress of your project and in the end it could very well be one of our feature rides of the month. “If it’s got a motor, goes fast, makes noise or is just plain cool to look at, we’re all about it at Hawaii Motorhead Magazine!” Attention Photographers! Looking to get some exposure? Let Motorhead be your canvas! Send us photos from events in your area or feature ride(s) and we’ll get you noticed. We provide links for all our photographers to your website or Facebook page. Till then thank you all for PO Box 7077 - Kamuela, HI 96743 your support and enjoy the www. hawaiimotorhead.com ride. BLEIZN FX
PEARLRIDGE
Cruise Night
Well the first Bleizn FX - Pearlridge Shopping Center Cruise Night on September 1st that we covered last month, was a trial event for the shopping center, and turned out to be a big success and a big hit with everyone. So much so that Bleizn FX and Pearlridge decided to do it again. On Saturday night, September 29th, Bleizn FX presented the West Side of Oahu with another opportunity to get together with friends, family and fellow hot rodders at Pearlridge Shopping Center to show off their rides, swap stories and just hang out. It was a real treat for on lookers as well with an amazing collection of classics, hot rods, VW’s, trucks, muscle cars and motorcycles to gaze over. Lei from Bleizn FX also told us that they have a special NHRA driver that’ll be here in November for a meet & greet! You’re not gonna wanna miss this one! Visit their blog page for more info @ www.bleiznfx.blogspot.com or keep it here.

The 1961 Chevrolet Impala “Bubble Top” is a rare one indeed. And, like many classics are getting harder and harder to find. Jimmy Paul of Kona on the Big Island bought this one on the Internet about 2 years ago with only a few photos, a description of the car and the guy’s good word to go on. So when the car landed in Hilo, it went straight from the port to his son’s garage, Tony Paul (pictured), at Mango Tree Alley, Panaewa for inspection. Tony said they put the car on the lift to see if it was going to be worth putting the time and money into it necessary to make it their own, with a Mango Tree Alley spin on it of course! Well, the car was in great shape and was definitely a keeper, so Tony convinced his dad to put a 409 instead of a 502 that Jimmy had in mind and they were off and running. Tony and his head mechanic Larry Hernandez took the 350/350 combinations out with plans of replacing it with a 409 Tony had acquired from fellow Hawaii Classic Cruiser club member Darryl Turner. (Hey wait a minute!, what was Darryl “Mopar” Turner doing with a 409?) Larry tore the 409 down and with the help of Jack Gibbs of California rounded up all the parts needed for a complete rebuild. The tapered shaped block of the 409 has its challenges such as boring and honing needing to be done by hand and performed by Allen DeMattos of Big Island Machine in Hilo. Larry and Tony also used this time while the engine and trans were out to re-do the entire engine compartment. Larry re-wired the car and hid all the wiring to clean up the firewall and fender wells. Check out the high-end billet hood hinges. The pulley and AC set up is from March. More on page 8

1 6 Y X FO The AC cooler bracket is stainless steel fabricated by Wayne Rabang and Tony spent a week grinding, sanding and polishing the OG intake manifold. Wayne also fabricated the back half of the exhaust after Tony and Larry modified the rack-n-pinion and 2” drop spindles to clear up the clearance issues. Wilwood disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors are found at all fours and can be seen through the chrome Foose wheels wrapped in Falken rubber. The metallic silver paint and super sweet custom leather interior were done by the previous owner, but Tony did a bunch of work re-finishing the front grill and many of the trim pieces and badges. He also replaced a few that he was fortunate enough to find like the front spears and chrome dash trim. Tony used a white speedo face to match the Auto Meter gauges in the custom stainless steel panel by Wayne. And there you have it, another one in the “Win” column for Tony and his dad Jimmy. Stay tuned for what’s next from the gang at Mango Tree Alley! Story and photos by Nelson Parker

YEARS in the making
If Clint Bush of Hilo needed a middle name, persisten would probably work! Clint, who works at Automotive Supply Center in Hil has been working on the ’96 Honda Civic for 6 year When he bought the car it had been in an accident wit some rear quarter panel damage. Not a big deal, right Well it sat at his friend’s house for about a year waiting to replace the quarter panel with an OEM panel before Clint finally got to bring the car home and start to reas semble it. But things weren’t lining up. The frame was tweaked! So the car sat again for a good long while a tried to decide what he wanted to do because all the frame after the quarter had already been replaced, fear Then one day he called his buddy Alex Visaya of Body and Clint was back in business. The interior also features a Hybrid Racing shifter assembly with Civic Type R shift boot and old sckool Hurst shifter. MAUI RACEWAY PARK On Saturday, September 22nd, the Valley Isle Timing Association’s NHRA Championship Drag Racing ended early as the main generator quit just before the Pro Classes were to run. The day wasn’t a total loss though as racers did get in some important Test-n-Tune runs as we near the end of the 2012 season and racers battle for the points lead. Veteran racer and photographer Bruce “Wheeler Dealer” Wheeler was on hand and got these great shots of some the action before the association called the race. Check out the October race on pages 22 and 23 and be sure to catch all the action at the 2012 Season Finals on November 16th & 17th. MAUI RACEWAY PARK The Valley Isle Timing Association presented NHRA Championship Drag Racing at Maui Raceway Park in Pu’unene on October 20th and the color for the day was hot pink in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness month. With just 2 races to go in the 2012 season, the racers were focused on going rounds with hopes of a championship. In the Summit Racing Sportsman class the win went to Ivan Ho in his Camaro running a 13.177 on his 13.08 dial in to beat Tony Gaspar in the finals with his 13.169 on his 13.62 dial in. In the Summit Racing Fast Gas 7.90 it was Scott Ehlart in his dragster over Joey Amoral in his roadster with Scott running an 8.286 on his 8.23 dial in to beat Joey’s 7.923 on his 7.90 dial in! In the special Paradise Auto Parts “Fall Street” competition it was the battle of the tuners in the finals but it was Jason Quiocho in his Honda over Sherwin Galiza in his Civic! The Fall Street was a win-win for everyone as the Fall Street competition was designed to get the racers off the street and on the track. Congrats to all! Aloha racers and fellow car enthusiasts! By the time you read this, October’s event will already have taken place - and the results will be on our NEW website, on our Facebook page and in Hawaii Motorhead’s November issue. But I will tell you about our September 30 event! The one thing you can count on with racing is “That NOTHING is ever the same!” And that means weather, track conditions, tire pressures, suspension, the condition you, the driver are in, etc. The variables go on and on. And even though you know the course and had a really good lap, you will NEVER EVER be able to duplicate it. And that is what makes racing so much fun. There’s always that element of chance - or luck - that keeps us glued to the action and coming back for more. And it helps if your ride decides not to quit right before the action. Yup, mechanical failure. Eventually it happens to everyone (or that’s what I keep telling myself!) My Miata decided to die ten feet from the waiver booth. So any dreams of placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd for the RTP Points Championship slowly disappeared. I actually placed second last year, right behind Micheal. Oh well - that’s racing. And that’s another nice thing about our club. There were too many people to mention here who attempted to revive my Miata. But the prize for perseverance goes to Ed Coykendall, who tried to the bitter end. I owe you a case of Red Stripes! And a big “Mahalo” to Ken’s Towing. So, who was “fast driver” of the day? With near perfect conditions (with the usual touch of “light” Hilo precipitation,) Michael Oates claimed an untouchable time of 90.703. This added 10.000 points to Mike’s total. Some competitors suggested that Mike might have “missed” a cone or two on the course (doubtful!) or that it was an error with the timing system (unlikely with our brand new system!) Even Michael was surprised! Jim Hains placed 2nd (93.153) Brandon Wilk, 3rd (93.100) and Roy Whitney, 4th (95.988) The 2012 RTP Points Championship is still undecided. The leader is still Michael Oates with a points total of 59,200 (out of a possible 60,000.) Michael, who won the championship last year - is hoping do it again. He is followed by Roy Whitney (58,931) Brandon Wilk (58,844) and Margie Oates (56,688) As some of you know, Margie is our fastest wahine, Michael’s co driver AND his wife! Michael actually confided in me pre-race that he thought Margie would best his time with the intermittent “damp” track conditions, but that was not the case. There are still three (3) races remaining AND your best six times of the season are counted - so anything can happen! Our next race is Sunday, November 25, 2012. So, come out & see us (spectators free!) or better yet, sign up to drive. Check us out on Facebook, www.bigislandscca.org or sign up at www.motorsportreg.com We’ll be looking for you! “Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F. Wurst Dam Car Show! Yup! I did a double take when I first saw the name of this car show held each year at Bicentennial Park in Boulder City, Nevada. The car show is sponsored by the Boulder City Sunrise Rotary and presented by the Boulder City Cruisin Association. This year’s event was held on September 28th & 29th in conjunction with Wurstfest with the event kicking off with a Friday night cruise at the Bighorn Restaurant and Lounge with music, entertainment and dinner specials. Saturdays car show featured raffle prizes, live and silent auctions, more music and entertainment and 40 top awards. Mahalo to Randall “Lugnut” Connell for the photos. Ron Capps raced his way to his 5th Funny Car win of the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series
with his win at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 28th. With just one race remaining, Capps’ win in Vegas cut the points leader, and his teammate Jack Beckman’s lead to just 4 points. The veteran driver of the NAPA Auto Parts funny car has finished second in the race for the championship 3 times in his career and hopes this is the year he gets that elusive win. In Top Fuel, Bob Vandergriff earned his second Top Fuel victory defeating 7-time world champion Tony Schumacher in the final round. Series points leader Antron Brown lost in round 1 to Al-Anabi Racing’s Khalid alBalooshi, while Spencer Massey, who is currently third in the points, was defeated by Vandergriff in the quarterfinals. So with the runner-up finish, Schumacher has moved to second overall just 65 points back of the leader Antron Brown. So, it comes down to wire, the season finals at Pomona for both Funny Car and Top Fuel, at the AAA Auto continues on page 31

SPEEDWAY
October 20th the Hilo Motor Speedway ran its October points race at their dirt oval track, the Southern most speedway in the USA! The day ended early when Mother Nature rained on the mains, but there was still plenty of action during the morning heats to have the fans up on their feet as drivers battled for the top spot in their prospective classes with just 2 more races to go in the 2012 season. New officers were also voted in and here’s a look at your new Board of Directors to wrap up the 2012 season and the 2013 season that starts in February.

Smashing Out Cancer at Kalaeloa Raceway Park
Nick Latulip Photos
There’s always something exciting going on at Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Oahu and on Saturday, October 20th, KRP’s Cruise Night had everybody revin’! The night included a Lowrider Hop, Tug-O-War & Burnout Competition. A car show, live entertainment and a Ladies Booty Contest! But it was all the Pink that had everybody going crazy with the 2nd Annual “Smash Out Cancer” Demolition Derby in support of breast cancer awareness month. Crash‘Em and Bash‘Em for a cause. Business sponsored cars all in pink bashed their way through the mud battling for the win as last one standing (or moving). One of the cars even caught on fire! Dita Holifield, Bryan Gray and the KHCM Party Animal Crew hosted the demolition derby half time show. And oh yah, they’ll be talking about this one for a while! The car show had something for everyone with cars, trucks and motorcycles. There were also a nice handful of stock cars on display. The stock car racing starts this month at KRP and needless to say the racers are excited. And we are too. Look for coverage each month in Hawaii Motorhead Magazine. It’s not often you hear of “Barn Finds” in Hawaii. For one, we don’t have many barns! Two, there are even fewer barns with classic iron stashed away inside. So you can imagine our surprise when Denny and April Duquette, owners of Island Performance & Off Road in Kona, and certified Mopar Maniacs told us they had found a 1970 Cuda, in a barn on the Big Island! Well here are the pix to prove it. In this 4 part series we’ll follow along as April turns this dusty barn find into a prize catch. After loading it on the flatbed hauler and getting it to their shop, April & Denny started tearing it down and throwing ideas around for the build. April would also take the lead on the build doing much of the work, ordering the parts and getting her hands dirty. Since the body was in really good shape with the exception of dings and dents from sitting in the barn for so many years having things fall on it and stacked on it, April decided to start with the drive train. The original 440, trans and rear were removed and Denny did a complete rebuilt of the motor. New pistons, bearings, rods and a Mopar 306 solid roller cam with gear drive. The 915 heads now sport Crane roller rockers and the long block is topped with a dual quad manifold and dual 500 CFM Edelbrock carbs.

A Mallory ignition provides the Mopar muscle with plenty of fire to burn all that fuel, and 2” primary ceramicoat headers and custom exhaust help the big horsepower fish breath. The 4 speed trans has a Zoom clutch, Passon Performance Slick Shift syncros and the original Hurst Pistol Grip shifter. The Dana 60 rear end has been shortened 3” to accommodate the custom wheels April picked out and also is stuffed with Dutchman axels, 4:10 ring & pinion and a Sure Grip posi. And April installed the SSBC disc brakes at all fours. The bodywork and paint is in the hands of Jessie Araki and his team at D&L Painting in Kona. Tune in next month when April’s Project Cuda should be out of the paint booth and then on to reassembly with a boatload of performance parts and accessories.
