Back to the 60’s Car & Bike Show
August 14, 2010 NAPA Auto Parts, Captain Cook held its annual Back to the 60’s, Customer Appreciation Sale and once again, it was a great time for all that came. It only comes once a year, the best prices on just about everything in the store including hand tools, power tools, specialty tools and this year also featured a “Bucket Sale.” For starters they gave you a 5 gallon NAPA bucket, a $5 value, and anything that fit in the bucket you could take 10% off of. Sweet deal! On top of the great savings on tools, my favorite was Brake Kleen for a buck 99 a can! We had local style plate lunches, cotton candy, shave ice and a nice variety of cars, and trucks including Don Raye’s way too cool Factory Cobra! Don tells us it’s only 1 of 5 in the United States like it. Look for a feature on Don’s ride in an upcoming issue. The Masonic organization was also on hand doing Free Keiki ID’s and handing out balloons. I got to break out my 50’s & 60’s tunes with the Motorhead Road Show and hand out hourly door prizes with store manager Mike Baker. The grand prize was a half day fishing charter. How cool was that! I can hardly wait till next year.

EXCESSIVELY OVERCHARGED!!!
Aloha everyone. I hope you all had a beautiful productive month in August. As for my Hilo crew and I, we had quite an interesting month that had really tested our patience and tenacity! A 1996 Honda Passport was towed in from Kau unable to move due to an overheated and failed transmission. Our preliminary test had concluded that a restricted Trans cooler was possibly the root cause, not knowing of any other circumstances did we have more challenges. The 4L30E Transmission was completely overhauled and upgraded. The vehicle ran beautiful on a 5 mile road test and released back to the customer at the appropriate ETA time. A week later the customer had complained of the transmission slipping intermittently. To be cautious and not to take the risk of the transmission failing again, we had the vehicle towed back to the shop and resumed diagnostics. The vehicle ran normal most of the time but sometimes it would go on limp mode-starting of on 3rd gear after a stop. Our lead Tech Kenji had observed that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) was not communicating with our scanners, so we were not certain what had caused the limp mode to occur. Driving the vehicle continuously on limp mode will fail the transmission 3rd and 4th high gear and over-run clutches. We had bypassed the computer command system and hooked up our Trans X-3000 breaker box just to make sure that the problem was not in the transmission but rather in the command control system. This will allow us to isolate the problem and control the transmission manually. During the test the vehicle ran normal with the Trans X-3000 indicating that the transmission was not at fault. Now we knew that the problem was somewhere else! Either the harness from the TCM or the TCM itself, but certainly we knew it was absolutely command related. We had the Harness inspected and checked out normal. We had installed a new TCM which offered us a better communication signal. All was well and the transmission shifted beautifully just like factory! The vehicle was released. Three weeks later the customer called again and complained of the transmission slipping again and also that the engine was running very poor and will not idle. This time we had taken the vehicle to another shop for an Engine Analysis. It was discovered that the Engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU) computer was faulty and shorted out causing poor ignition and random misfires. A faulty ECU will cause the TCM and transmission to malfunction. But what had caused these two controllers to fail? Upon further testing, we had observed that the Alternator output voltage was excessively high and overcharging the battery which shorted out the TCM and ECU and ultimately failing the transmission due to constant limp mode 3rd gear application. A battery has 12.6 volts when fully charged. To recharge the battery, alternator output is normally 13 to 15 volts. My voltmeter indicated 18 to 20 volts and spiking the charging system to 22 volts. The battery was very hot and bloated but luckily it didn’t explode! An intermittent symptom is always the worse to diagnose. It’s like chasing a ghost, they appear and disappear! And sometimes you just have to wait until it’s more detectable, but by then, costly repairs can incur. The root cause of the problem was a failing alternator and the result of the problem was a failed TCM, ECU, and a 4L30E Transmission. Please call Transmission Technology for a free road test and fluid inspection Kona 331-8310 or Hilo 9351600. Much mahalo for voting us Best Auto repair and Best Customer Service. Respectfully, Vic Comesario

Hello race fans! August was a good month for racing with no rain on both days. Summer is ending and families are back from vacations so the number of karts are growing. Drew Halloway is our fast JR-2. The SR. Sportsman class is getting faster every month with Sean Rodrigues and Daron King both getting their new karts fine tuned. The shifters had a hard time getting to the track with 2 of them breaking down before they got to the track, it’s not only race cars that break on race day. Our September race days are Saturday the 10th which is going to be a regular raceday and Sunday the 11th which will be the Dash for Cash. The dirt track racers are putting on a swap-meet with kid’s rides and food on both days so come on down and check things out. For more info. please call Tom Sluder at 808-939-9746 Patti Halloway photos

Dual Sport Ride Submitted by Gaston “Gasser” Belanger
Aloha Big Island rider’s of the rock’s that roll 8 Dual-Sport riders departed with wet gear on from Big Island Power Sports into a drizzling rain all the way up to Saddle Road mile 16 turning off on Tree Planting Road, ducking 10 miles of over grown ferns doing lots of long puddle splashing before popping out at Steinbeck Road and working our way through the back road subdivisions down to Orchid Land to gas up. Then taking Rail Road Avenue to Opihikau Road down to a coconut grove trail along the Kalapana coastline where I watched Craig “gas it” up a smooth looking pahoehoe rise thinking it was the trail, but ended up dropping off a 6 foot ledge on the other side. I watched him bail off mid air with arms and legs spread wide eagle quickly disappearing into the rock’ below. It’s a good thing he’s a smart ,“big time air stunt rider” knowing how to crash without getting hurt. He’s a rough and tough, durable dude...my kind of riding brother that can take the hit’s.

From that LOL of the day, we picked our way through a 1/4 mile of Ironwood trees studded with high definition TV sized, bike smashing lava rocks popping out near Pohoiki. From there we made our way to Kapoho’s Ironwood & cinder trail that all riders liked until they got to “second thought Vagisil chicken skin drop.” Everyone dropped off the lip, down to the bottom where a big ‘ol Ironwood tree will greet you if you don’t do an instant 90 degree break slide turn at it’s trunk to avoid it. Just ask Ben if that’s what a rider should do? Next was the rough A’a & Pahoehoe section where Mike left some blue Yamaha plastic embedded into the lava a few times for Madam Pele to adorn herself with. After that bone jolting section, the riders were tiring and hungry saying “uncle!” at mile 100.3 , so we hauled our monkey butts to a hidden spot for some BBQ! Thanks to Ed, Tony & Rochelle for taking care of us calorie burned out Dual-Sport riders...it was a good fun rain/shine, pitch it sideways riding day. Don’t miss the next ride. September 5th, South Point SubWay sandwich ride. Visit www.bidsa.mk200.com or Big Island Power Sports for all the details.

ontrary to the custom license plates owner Kevin and his girl friend Nicki have on order for this beautiful 2008 Ford F-350 Lariat Crew Cab which reads, BAD4BZ, I think this High Country Hauler is great for business, especially if you’re in the automotive business! Kevin owns Kar Tow Kohala and spends his spare time building and enjoying the fruits of his labor like this F-350 that packs a big punch with its 6.4 liter Twin Turbo Diesel. Rated at 600 Horse Power and 1180 foot pounds of torque, the twin turbo’s added muscle come from an H&S Performance, Black Maxx Race Tuner, AFE Stage II Cold Air Intake and a custom

dual straight pipe exhaust. Now when you’re putting out that many ponies, you better have game when it comes to the transmission. Kevin installed a South Bend Dual-Disc Kevlar clutch that’s rated for 1000 horse power to the 6 speed manual tranny for the heavy task. Also on the list of slick tricks is the addition of a BD Diesel Exhaust Brake that Kevin tells us, is one of only 2 known in the U.S. on a 2008 F-350 6.4 liter Diesel. The suspension features a custom 13 inch RIZE Industries suspension lift with RIZE front and rear ladder traction bars. Fox adjustable remote reservoir coil-overs with Fox 3.0 remote reservoir shocks up front and Fox 2.5 remote reservoir shocks out back soak up the bumps while dual Fox remote reservoir steering stabilizers with a RIZE setup help take care of business up front as well. While rolling on 35 inch Super Swamper Irok’s on 22 inch chrome KMC wheels, Kevin is currently waiting on custom 24 inch black BMF M-80 wheels wrapped in 37 inch Kumho Road Venture M/T’s. In the cabin, custom Wet Okole seat covers with the Kenworth logos (the make of Kar Tow Kohala’s rigs) wrap things up on this Hi-Rize hauler dubbed BAD4BZ! TEAM TRAUMATIZE
Howzit Motorheads! Its time I take you to the other side of the tracks…race track dat is! I’m not much of a car guy. I pretty much only drive a car when its raining or I gotta lug a bunch of stuffs around. So a cars gotta really stand out (or I gotta be upholstering it) for me to go check it out, and maybe even rap to the owner about the mods he did. Well one day while riding to Hilo I saw a group a cars with the word “Traumatize” on all the front windshields. They were primarily all Imports , but what tripped me out was there were no Hondas , and I think I actually saw a couple of American cars. So I figured I’d catch up to em & talk story with the Prez to get the scoops. Elliott Kyle Mattos aka Kawika started Team Traumatize with a couple buddies in January of this year. Kawika went to a lot of car cruises and noticed most of the crews were all Hondas. And Kawika owner of a Subaru STI , knew what it was like to be around a bunch of Hondas and be the odd man out. “All the Honda guys can share tech tips and share ideas. But if you’re in that crowd & you don’t have a Honda, who do you share tips with about YOUR car?” say Kawika. So he first hooked up with two friends Stetson Lee & Bronson Derego, who both drove Toyota Supras and wanted to start a club for cars that stood out, that were different…..and fast! Kawika says they have nothing against Hondas they just wanted to start a club for the OTHER sick cars out there. As of now they have about 15 members, with a bunch of others that come and go. They participate in Car Shows, Car Cruises, Drag Races (Legal), and all kinds of other events. In February of this year they were featured on speedhawaii.com and Recently had a rapper from Oahu (Moe Money McCoy) come down to the Big Island and join them on one of their cruises. He had a great time and returned to Oahu to create a song for the club. The song was finished on 4/14/2010 titled “Traumatize 808” and can be found on www.moemoneymccoy.com.; Their Goal is to go state wide or even bigger if can! They are even planning some high school shows & also want to help educate teens on going to the track to race to keep racing off the streets. The crew is currently looking for some Vehicles to join Team Traumatize. Trucks will now be excepted to join a Class of Team Traumatize as long as they are not stock. They’re also considering street bikes. Kawika says they’re looking for cars that are uncommon or rare (no Honda’s except NSX).... no rust buckets, ugly cars or primer paint jobs. “Team Traumatize is a club made for the uncommon/rare vehicles that would like to stand out, yet surrounded by others of the same interest. Thus our mission statement would be “Traumatize the Competition & Leave you Speechless” says Kawika. “We will only be excepting Vehicles between 1990-Present, Unless it has been restored, taken care of or modified to Traumatize.... Cars that we are looking for: Nissan ,Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chevy & Pontiac, Ford & Lincon , Lexus, Mazda, Dodge & Chrysler, Toyota BMW, Audi , Mercedes, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Volvo” Email teamtraumatize@yahoo.com or check out http://www.myspace.com/ teamtraumatize#ixzz0urfd7259

Legend lives on... the
In 1962 Carroll Shelby created the most sought-after, American muscle car in history, the Shelby Cobra. And today it’s still arguably one of the world’s most famous and recognizable sports cars. The 289 model of this snake went on to become the first American-made FIA World Champion in 1965 and later evolved into the ultimate expression of power and performance with the 427 S/C model in 1966. Phil Kriege of Ocean View bought this authentic continuation Cobra in 2006 as an investment after a real estate sale in California . The 427 street version, (CSX4000-Series) Shelby chassis number 4263 was built and documented by Shelby American Inc. in Las Vegas, signed by Carroll Shelby himself and is everything the 1965 models were and more. Improvements include the use of improved metals and components that make these cars safer and more driveable without losing any of their original character. The engine is a 427 cubic inch that puts out 410 horse power and 475 foot pounds of torque and will set you back in the seat with its 0-60 mph in under four seconds and its 12 second quarter mile performance! The Shelby big tube headers are wrapped with heat resistant wrap to keep the engine compartment cooler. Also keeping things cool is the custom fabricated aluminum radiator. A custom 40 gallon race gas tank keeps the hungry Big Block well fed. The Hardy Spicer top loader 4 speed transmission is hooked to a Shelby limited slip rear end with 3.54 gears. The frame is 4 inch diameter DOM steel and features four wheel independent suspension, dual A-arms, rack and pinion steering, coilover shocks and 1” x 11-7/16 front rotors, 3/4x11-7/16 rear rotors and Baer calipers. The knock off wheels are 15” Trigo reproduction pieces wrapped in Good Year rubber. The body is hand laid fiberglass with classic Shelby paint scheme and the interior features Smith’s instruments, roll bar and competition seat belts. That’s right baby it’s all business! Phil drives his Shelby Cobra a lot! And you can catch him at just about every event around the island showing it off! Photos by Jim Wulzen, Story by Nelson Ray Parker

HANA HOU! This month Cruisin’ for Grinds takes us on a scenic ride for some great home style cooking and home made deserts at the Southern most restaurant in the United States ! The Hana Hou restaurant in beautiful Na’alehu! Owners Patty and Drake Fujimoto have been running the restaurant for the past 7 years and have turned it into the premier location down South! This location goes back to 1939 and still has the original stove! It’s the only stove I’ve seen powered by diesel fuel! The stove came off a Navy ship and was installed by C. Brewer. Patty loves to cook on this stove and it still works great after all these years, I guess the Navy makes a good product! All the recipes at Hana Hou are Patty’s and she oversees the kitchen. She takes pride in providing fresh wholesome food with local ingredients, organic veggies, local grass fed beef and they make all their own pastries, pies and breads at the restaurant. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner with generous portions and a large selection of all your American favorites, “no frozen potatoes here!” says Patty. Lunch specials abound with fresh local fish, the king of burritos the “Hog Zilla” which is a huge pork filled burrito and great sandwiches all made with fresh home made bread and local ingredients. Other specialties like their prime rib, corned beef hash, local style smoked pork, breakfast burritos Oh! and we can’t forget to mention the Outrageous Burgers with a variety of toppings you can add that keep kama’aina and malahine alike coming back for more! That’s why they call it “Hana Hou!” They are also well known for their fresh home made soups and if you have special requests or diet restrictions they will happily accommodate you. The staff is always happy to see you and you get the down home feeling when you come in, it’s really nice. When dining on the weekends you’ll find plenty of parking and a nice size area to dine in and on Friday and Saturday nights local entertainers will entertain you as you dine. For the cruisers on the go they have fresh ready made sandwiches and pastries, yummy! So whether you’re dining in, or just dropping in for some fresh sandwiches or pastries on the run, when cruising the Big Island this is the spot to stop at, you’ll love it. Oh and did I mention both Patty and Drake are certified Motorheads. While on the mainland they attended the winter nationals (Drake used to go all the time) and when Patty heard the top fuel dragsters run she was hooked for life! Drake goes back a ways (we won’t say how far) and has been involved in drag racing in Honolulu and the Big Island for many years and has long lasting friendships with racers and hot rodders around the state. Drake and Patty own a real nice El Camino that is a daily driver. Once a Motorhead, always a Motorhead! When cruising the Big Island be sure and stop at Hana Hou restaurant, the southern most restaurant in the United States , you’ll be glad you did. Jim Wulzen story & photos
