The concert opens with Prokofiev’s salute to the great symphonies of Haydn and Mozart with his delightful ‘Classical’ Symphony. This is followed by the highly talented Russian violinist Natalia Lomeiko, performing Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Violin Concerto. The second half features two contrasting masterpieces by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. The hypnotic rhythms of Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements are an experimental masterstroke, while the much more familiar lush orchestration and rich harmonic textures of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet will be a thrilling end to the concert.

The young local star takes centre stage for a performance of Elgar’s rich and noble English masterpiece. Walton Crown Imperial Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Coates The London Suite, ‘London Everyday’ Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Elgar Enigma Variations Conductor Violin
Nick Davies Duncan Riddell
Come and celebrate St George’s Day with music by four of England’s finest composers. Opening with the triumphant sound of Walton’s celebratory Crown Imperial march, this quintessentially English sound is echoed throughout Coates’ London Suite. From the bustling marketplace at Covent Garden to a quiet evening at Westminster, finishing with the alltime favourite Knightsbridge March. In contrast, the concert features two works by Vaughan Williams, evoking images of pastoral England, through the soaring sound of the solo violin in his The Lark Ascending and in the full string orchestra in his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Elgar’s much admired Enigma variations brings the celebrations to a spectacular close. Pre-concert talk at 6.30pm by Terry Barfoot: Enigma Variations
