Local women Corinne Kielty and Kate Wheadon’s original concept of selling fresh sushi lunchboxes has grown to include a variety of box sizes for different appetites and main meals, platters for parties & Corinne and their increasingly popular Connoisseur Club. Now the ladies are expanding their business further with the introduction of the Sushi Tuesday Saturday School. Beacon Fell Country Park
I
t was a warm sunny day and we all fancied a day out, to get some fresh air. Nothing too strenuous but somewhere… different.
Up a hill sounded good, but with a 6 and a 4 year old, there had to be some good motivating factors to get us all to the top in a happy mood. With trails to follow, woodwork sculptures to seek out and obviously ice cream at the end of the walk, all the essential factors were there. To be fair, Beacon Fell is not close by; say an hour away, situated in the Forest of Bowland, about 10 miles from Preston. But if you were spending the day out in the area, having lunch, going shopping or just investigating the Forest of Bowland, then it’s an excellent place to stretch your legs on a sunny afternoon. Beacon Fell Country Park consists of 271 acres of woodland, moorland and farmland. It’s one of the oldest in the country, designated as a country park in 1970. The Beacon Fell summit is 266 metres above sea level and offers magnificent views of The Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay. Supposedly on a clear day it is possible to see the Isle of Man. The Park is a popular place for visitors who want to see all sorts of wildlife, from rabbits, to weasels and dragonflies, even deer. It has a network
of well-maintained footpaths through woodland catering for all levels of ability and interest. Maps of the trails around the Park can be downloaded from the Lancashire County Council website or leaflets can be obtained from the on-site Visitor centre. It’s a great idea having woodwork pieces of art spread around the Park, especially if you are walking with young children. An excellent distraction to the question, ‘Are we nearly at the top yet?’ And it’s a good game to encourage
those little legs to keep moving. Lookout for the bat, snake, deer, wolf-head bench and lizard! All the sculptures are big and easily seen, perfect for young eyes to seek out. If you are feeling more adventurous and your children are older, there are two orienteering course packs that can be purchased for a small charge from the Visitor Centre, you can even
purchase certificates for your child if they complete the course. The Bowland Visitor Centre, which is close to the car park and toilets, provides information about the fell and the Forest of Bowland, it also serves a variety of beverages, hot and cold food, light snacks, all day breakfasts, sweets and of course… ice cream. There are picnic tables dotted around should you wish to take your own food, even a barbeque area with cooking grates provided! A tarmac road runs around the park and is subject to traffic control which makes it a “one way” system. All the facilities and car parks are accessible from the circuit road and the main car parks, which are free. Be warned: please do not make the mistake my 4 year old did. Just because it has the word ‘park’ in the name it doesn’t mean there are swings, slides or roundabouts to scramble about on. This is a beautiful wildlife area, a great place for a peaceful walk in the fresh air with some very pretty scenery to enjoy. Having said that, we all enjoyed the change! By Tracey Sunderland

hen my daughter Katie changed to a new primary school in September, I agreed she could have a couple of new friends over for tea. Before I knew it the “couple” had turned into eight of them!

I was worried about how I was going to feed eight girls something they would all like, but one of the other mums suggested speaking to a mutual friend, Rachel, from Truly Scrumptious. So, whilst I was collecting the girls from school, Rachel came and set up my dining table with her beautiful china tea sets, napkins, flowers and paper butterflies. Before we showed the girls into the dining room, I expressed my concerns to Rachel. I was worried that they would charge into the room, eat as little and as quickly as possible and rush off again to carry on playing. Rachel assured me that this wouldn’t be the case, and it certainly wasn’t! The girls walked into the room and were mesmerised! All we could hear
were “oohs”, “aahs” and “wows”. Before our eyes they suddenly turned from noisy, squealing seven year olds into quite refined little ladies, eating their tiny heart-shaped sandwiches and miniature scones and pouring pink milk shake from a tea pot into their tea cups. Pure pleasure, I think you’ll agree, for little girls who normally get little more than a plastic tea set. They sat eating and chatting for much longer than I expected. The other mums and I commented on how much more they actually ate compared to a normal party tea, because it was all part of the fun! Katie has since repeatedly asked if we can do it again and I have promised we can do it for her birthday, though I may do it as a treat for myself and my friends before then. So, if you have a little girl (I would probably say from about 5 upwards) and would love to see something a little different from the average birthday party, I would really recommend Little Miss Scrumptious. I assure you they will love it.

The doula

D
oula (pronounced “doola”) is a Greek word which originally meant “woman caregiver”. It is now used to mean an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth.
A doula will build a personal relationship with the family during pregnancy, so she can offer the right support to each individual family. Most doulas offer a birth doula service and a postnatal doula service, and families can choose whether they want just pregnancy and birth support, or just post-natal support, or both.
What does a doula do?
A doula’s role is to empower the mother. A doula believes in “mothering the mother” - helping a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience. In practical terms this could involve: • providing access to information and antenatal research • helping a couple think through their plans for birth, and working out what care will best suit them (local hospital, different hospital, home, birth centre, independent midwife) • being a consistent, reassuring and experienced presence during labour • taking on practical tasks during labour (filling pools, helping with other children, making cuppas), leaving the mum’s partner free to be with her • debriefing with the family after the birth • offering practical post-natal support • offering emotional support to adjust to life with an increased family size. • some doulas also have qualifications in breastfeeding counselling, infant massage, and babywearing.
Who might use a doula?
Anyone. The calm that a doula can bring to the birthing room can be of benefit to any woman in labour. The practical help that a doula can bring in the early days of a new baby can be of benefit to any family. Below are some examples of how a doula might help in different sitautions:
What effect does using a doula have?
There’s lots of anecdotal evidence that using a doula has a positive effect on the whole family, but the formal research speaks for itself too. Research has shown that having a doula present at a birth: • Shortens first-time labour by an average of 2 hours • Decreases the chance of caesarean section by 50% • Decreases the need for forceps delivery by 43% • Decreases the need for pain medication • Helps fathers participate with confidence • Increases success in breast-feeding (Findings taken from “Mothering the Mother” by Klaus, Kennell & Klaus, 1993)
How can I check if my doula is a good doula?
A good doula is the doula who is right for you. If you are considering hiring a doula, meet several doulas in your area, and spend some time interviewing them. Ask lots of questions about their training, experience and services. See if you feel you can connect with this person – if you are going to share one the most important and intimate experiences of your life with them, you need to feel connected to them. A good doula will always ask if you have met other doulas, and if not will encourage you to do so. At the moment there are no requirements for becoming a doula in the UK, anyone can call themselves a doula and practice. There are many training courses around, some of which are great. You may want to ask your doula about the courses she did, and any other relevant qualifications she has (such as breastfeeding support, baby massage and homeopathy for labour), and then look at the course content online for yourself. There is also a voluntary organisation for doulas called Doula UK (www.doula. org.uk). If your doula is a member of Doula UK it means that the training she has done will have been of a certain standard, and that she will have spent time as a trainee doula, being supervised by a very experienced doula. It also means that she has agreed to practice within certain standards which Doula UK set. Some doulas choose not to join Doula UK for a variety of reasons, or leave because they have an alternative support system, and there are many good, experienced doulas who are not members. But it is worth asking your potential doula if they are a member, and if not, checking with them why not.

The school has a popular Breakfast club every morning from 7.30 (£2.50) or 8.00 (£1.50). Breakfast is included. We also have an After School Club from 3.30 – 6 p.m. Parents can opt from a choice of sessions Prices range from £3.50 - £7.50 for the full session (with tea provided) In the Foundation Stage class children aged 3 – 5 years learn through play. For nursery age children, who have an entitlement to FREE 15 hour sessions, these can be varied according to the parents needs.
The creative arts are a particular strength of the school. Children are given the opportunity to perform for a variety of audiences either individually, in small groups, as classes or whole Key Stages. Todmorden Hippodrome is used to provide a sense of occasion for the children. The school has focus weeks which have included science, maths, art and this year will incorporate model making. The school has its own allotment where the children sow, grow, cook and eat their own vegetables. We also have four chickens providing eggs for baking sessions. Parents run the Gardening Club at lunchtime and the Parent‛s Cafe which is held after school on Fridays.

feature Applying for a Primary School Place - FAQs Who needs to apply and when?
Any child who was born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008 will need to begin school in the next academic year. They don’t legally need to start until the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday, but Calderdale provides places for any eligible child from the beginning of September in the academic year in which they turn five. Children who attend Infant only schools, who are currently in year 2, also need to apply for a place at a Junior school in the same way. The application forms, known as the Common Preference Forms, will become available at the end of November 2011 and the forms must be submitted by 15th January 2012.
Where do I get a form?
If your child is already attending a nursery, you will probably be given a copy of the form and the accompanying booklet when it becomes available. If not the form can be obtained from your local primary school, Halifax Central Library or will be available in full on the Calderdale Council website, www. calderdale.gov.uk. The form can also be filled in on-line if preferred.
Is the form difficult to fill in?
No. The form itself is very straight forward, with space for three schools. All will be considered equally and, only if your child is eligible to attend more than one school, will your preference (the order you placed them on the form) be taken into account.
What does “Admissions Criteria” mean?
Many schools have more applications than they have places. Therefore they must apply some rules to decide on which children are offered places. These must be clear, fair and objective but do vary from school to school. The details for each school are covered in detail in the “Information for Parents” booklet that accompanies the Common Preference Form. It may be worth reading these carefully before choosing the order for the schools you put on the form.
Everyone will receive an offer of a school place on the same day. That will be 20th April 2012
What if we are not happy with the decision?
The first thing to do is put your child name on the re-allocation list. Details will be sent out with the placement offer letter. Otherwise you have a right to appeal.
What if my application is late?
There are some admissible reasons for being late with the application form but, otherwise, you application will only be considered after all other places are allocated.
How do I choose the best school for my child? There are a number of things you should consider when making this decision: • Does your child need special attention? Are they particularly bright or have particular behaviour patterns? Will the school offer support for Special Needs? • Does your child have specific areas of interest or are they particularly keen on sport? Does your chosen school have the equipment of structure to support these interest, such as bands, choirs, sports teams, computer suites or out-of-school activities? • Do you require wrap-around care? Does your chosen school provide breakfast clubs or after-school care? How much do they cost?
When will I find out which school we have been offered?
• How big is the school? How big are the classes and what age range is taught in each class? • Does the school suit your family’s religious beliefs? How do they handle religious education? • How would your child get to school? Is there a safe walking route or are school buses available? • Does the school have an active PTA? Would you like to be involved in this side of school life? • Does your child have a preference? Would they be happier if they stayed with their friends?
What can we learn at the Open Day or Visit? Most Primary school have Open days or will be happy to arrange for you to visit. Go prepared with an idea of what you are looking for. Some suggestions are: • A happy school with high moral • A warm and welcoming atmosphere • Cheerful and friendly children (and staff) • High quality and varied work, displayed with pride • Relaxed staff • Enthusiasric children who ask, as well as answer questions • An air of concentration and hard work, but don’t expect silence • Any other resources you or your child consider important, such as a good library, computer suite, sports facilities, arts and science equipment.

£1.7 million scheme has given a small village school a state-of-theart future. Heptonstall Junior, Infant and Nursery School is being transformed as part of a Government scheme to update Victorian primary schools.
A large modern extension was completed in September and a total renovation of the original 1879 building is due to be finished early next year. Head teacher Mr David Perrin said there was a tremendous sense of excitement at the school. “The new extension is a fabulous resource not only for our pupils but for the community as well. “The quality of the new building has surpassed our expectations and given us a taste of how fantastic the refurbished old school will look when it’s ready in a few months time.” The extension houses a large hall, a new foundation stage unit with its own large playground, kitchens, space for the Out of School club and a hidden surprise – a time capsule put together by pupils to be opened in 50 years time. Community groups such as Brownies and Guides also have use of the hall space in the evenings. The refurbished old school will include three modernised classrooms, a computer suite with brand new PCs, a new library and offices. A new look for the school grounds also forms part of the scheme. The foundation stage playground has been expertly designed to provide a fun, challenging outdoor learning space, and will boast
shelters, den making areas, sand and water play, a bike track, climbing frames and balance beams. It will be used all year round as an “outdoor classroom” and will form an integral part of the nursery and reception-aged children’s learning day. Foundation Stage teacher Mrs Polly Williams said she was thrilled with the new classroom and couldn’t wait for the playground to be ready. “It’s wonderful, really wonderful – bright, airy, modern and a great size. “With the outdoor space as well, it will be a foundation stage unit to match any other.” And the older children will not miss out on outside improvements. They will benefit from an all-weather sports pitch and playing fields. “We really could not wish for a better school building for the 21st century and we all feel extremely fortunate,” said Mr Perrin. “It has been lovely to witness how proud the children feel of their new school and how well they are taking care of it.” As well as the massive improvements to the building, the school has recently introduced a new modern “creative curriculum”, moving away from teaching subjects separately to a more topic-based approach. For example, for two weeks the children might study The Romans, and all their history,
geography, literacy, art and science work would have a Roman theme. Some topics last for a week and some for a fortnight, with English skills, Maths skills and RE still taught in separate sessions. Mr Perrin said the new curriculum had had a big impact on pupils’ learning. “Teaching and learning in this way means everyone can get really engrossed and I have never seen the children so enthusiastic. “They have produced some amazing work and we’ve had great feedback from parents as well.” He said topics were often complemented by visits to museums, galleries and other places of interest. And extra-curricular activities such as whole-school plays, a brass band and various clubs also formed an important part of life at Heptonstall school. “It’s a wonderful time to be at Heptonstall school and we welcome anyone who would like to come and see the improvements for themselves,” said Mr Perrin. We hear it time and again as an excuse for not being able to get out and be active at this time of year. You guessed it – the Great British Weather. It’s second to none. BUT…if you are well kitted out, there is no excuse. In this day and age of high tech fibres, good quality outdoor gear is readily available and doesn’t have to break the bank. That said, it can be worth spending a bit more to get decent quality lightweight waterproofs, footwear, & base-layers so you CAN get out for a walk/run and be comfortable. A couple of other good investments are a highvisibility item (it could be a hat or gloves, or a jacket) and a head torch (these are brilliant for running, and relatively inexpensive). A great idea for Christmas pressies!
Seasonal Events – Santa Dash anyone?
Embrace the Festive Season by all means! I’d hate to be considered a ‘bah humbug’, so this year I will be once again taking part in one (or more)
Santa Dash events held at a number of venues. Generally speaking these are 5k runs, with people of all ages, fitness levels and shapes & sizes taking part. The beauty of it is, we will all look the same for that one day dressed as Santa! Who can tell how fast or slow you are, and who cares anyway!
Plan Ahead – set a Spring goal…
If you set your sights on a challenge for Feb/March time, it’s a great way to keep your focus and motivation throughout Christmas and well into the New Year. It worked wonders for me to know I was going to be running the London Marathon in April, so my training had to be over the dark, wet, cold winter months. Without the training, I knew the Marathon would be virtually impossible. I committed to both, the event and the training and it worked!

Finally, there are so many brilliant gift ideas around which encourage all ages to be active. Gallery Petite at Word of Mouth
f you haven’t yet discovered Word of Mouth on Valley Road, Hebden Bridge, you won’t know the delights that lie in store & all its creative potential.
Established in December 2009, Word of Mouth is not only a shop boasting an Aladdin’s Cave of craft supplies including wool, haberdashery, beads, & fabric, guaranteed to inspire & delight all those creative individuals out there, it’s become much, much more. Offering a wide range of Art & Craft Workshops, and clothing alterations & sewing machine repairs service, it now has the area’s first Children’s Art Gallery. ‘Gallery Petite’ is a community space, free to use by local Children’s Organisations, Schools & Nursery’s to fundraise through the Children’s Artwork. It has been set up to
encourage children to be creative & raise funds by selling their Artwork to other visiting children for a donation. Stubbings Infant School has held the initial exhibition & has raised around £40.00 so far. The Gallery is booked right up until the end of the year by HB Woodcraft Folk (November), Steiner School (December) & Katie Kemp (for Stubbings School exhibiting from 1st October). Exhibitions are held for a month at a time & visitors are encouraged to ‘donate to show they appreciate.’ We’ve had a fantastic response so far & look forward to showcasing more work by local children. Either I am very slow on the uptake or our health professionals have been keeping something very quiet. In February a new scheme was introduced to Calderdale designed to improve access and choice for people with minor ailments. It is invaluable for those of us caring for children as in many cases it means you can avoid the inconvenience of a trip to the doctor or nurse with unwell or cranky little ones. Any scheme that reduces the need for waiting around in rooms full of people coughing unhealthily has got to be applauded. As the name implies, the service

offers help with minor ailments - if your child has a blocked nose, constipation, head lice or mouth ulcers, for example, you still need to venture out but only to visit the local chemist where the pharmacist will take a look at them and if necessary prescribe a medicine which the child gets for free. If the pharmacist feels that the child should be seen by their doctor they will refer you to your practice. So no more paying for Calpol! Why aren’t Calderdale trumpeting this excellent idea from the roof tops? You must register children for the scheme, this involves a trip to your doctors surgery where you will be
issued with an Access Card which gives examples of the sort of ailments it covers and a record is made within it of every visit. You must bring the card with you each time you use the service. Not every pharmacy is running the scheme so you will need to check with your local one. As winter closes in and the noses run freely it is reassuring to know that I won’t need to run the gauntlet of surgery waiting rooms for anything within the normal range of childhood peakiness for the sake of getting a medicine on prescription.

We have family in Devon and often drive down there. But every time we go I seem to arrive with more pain in my back and hips. Do you have any tips? Most car seats place the knees higher than hip level, tipping the pelvis backward, which flattens the low back causing the spine to be rounded. Combine this with hunched shoulders from holding the wheel and head poked forwards and we bear more resemblance to Neanderthal man/woman than Homo sapiens! The ligaments and muscles of our body (including the discs in our spinal column) can cause pain if overstretched for periods of time. Bad driving
positions do this; stretching the structures at the back of our spine, pelvis, hips and shoulders, while those at the front may tighten up. Variations between car types make it impossible to recommend a specific vehicle but here is a quick test: If you were choosing a new car, which would you choose: • A sporty little number? • An MPV? • A saloon car? Generally your body would choose the MPV. This is because a higher seat tends to discourage the poor posture described above (compare a firm upright armchair with a soft couch). To avoid problems here are some handy tips, check next time you get in your car; • Ensure the backrest is as upright as possible. You should be able to easily depress the pedals, with good clearance for the knees, and should be holding the wheel with your elbows slightly bent. • If you can adjust seat height, raise it fully (ensuring you have enough head room). Alternatively, you can sit on a flat cushion or foam wedge. • Adjust any other controls you have. Lumbar (low back) support
is vital, ensure it fits the inward curve of your back at waist height. • The head restraint should be behind your head, not your neck. Try to feel your head lightly touching it as you drive to keep good neck position. • Most importantly, take a break regularly on long journeys.
