Todmorden Folk Festival
his is our fifth festival and we are still in awe at how quickly it’s become an important part of the folk festival calendar. Todmorden is a welcoming, open and friendly place; we love bringing amazing musicians, dancers, singers, participants and audiences to our town. If you are visiting Todmorden for the first time, we encourage you to visit the local shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants in town who so warmly and enthusiastically support our event. This festival really couldn’t happen without the backing of local businesses supporting us through advertising, sponsorship and other contributions. There are sessions, morris dancing, concerts and pop up performances galore this year; far too many to mention! We’re sure that you’ll enjoy discovering some amazing new music and rediscovering some favourites as we fill the town with music and dance. Special mention should be made, however, to the magnificent Orladh & Leo who won our Todmorden Youth Music Award earlier in the year and so will open the headline concert on Saturday night featuring the mesmerising Kate & Raphael followed by the raucous powerhouse of energy that is Sheelanagig. The Children’s Programme is also expanding and growing out of our base on Pollination Street throughout Saturday daytime. We’re excited to present street theatre in the form of The Fisherman
Fable alongside performances from the incredible Red Hippo in our Children’s Tent. On Sunday, families can also enjoy Brian Acton’s mesmerising Story Walks. Thanks to Todmorden Town Council for their ongoing support which allows us to keep our children’s festival completely free. We’ve added a new public element to the festival this year, during the day on Sunday, head over to Dale Street and enjoy the vibrancy of the Global Street Market. Supported by Calderdale Council, there will be a vibrant selection of music, dance and stalls from across the world. However we’re keen not to forget our Yorkshire roots and so are pleased to welcome firm festival favourites Alice Jones and Bryony Griffith who will be belting out songs and tunes in our afternoon concert ‘Sounds of West Yorkshire’. To end the weekend, we are absolutely delighted to present legendary Martin Simpson with support from Cobalt Tales on Sunday evening in the Todmorden Hippodrome. Over the past few years, the demand for tickets has been growing and so we’ve sadly had to say farewell to the Fielden Centre simply because there’s so many of us now! We know that you will love the beautiful Hippodrome, a perfect space to finish the festival. Whether you’re with us just for one concert, one day or the whole shebang, we’d like to say thanks to you for joining us in Todmorden.

Welcome to TODMORDEN FOLK FESTIVAL 2019

Todmorden Folk Festival
ARTISTS Martin Simpson There is no doubt that after 45 years as a professional musician Martin is, right now, better than ever. Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving.
Sheelanagig Sheelanagig for over a decade have brought their array of foot – stomping folk tunes to audiences across the globe. A quintet with a well-stocked armoury of stringed instruments and jumping tunes, these boys from South-West England create a real dynamic which is inherent in both their furious dance medleys as well as their interestingly arranged original pieces.
Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar joined forces in 2011. Combining Russell’s powerful vocals and driving guitar style with Algar’s All-Ireland winning fiddle playing, the duo have become one of the most sought after acts on the British folk scene. In 2013 the pair won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and in 2015, they were nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Best Duo category.
Todmorden Folk Festival
ARTISTS Kate & Raphael Kate Young and Raphaël Decoster together form an exciting blend of original and folkinfluenced music. The French accordion dialogs with the Scottish fiddle and Kate’s voice with an intimate spontaneity, which invites us to discover their hidden stories and landscapes. They create melodies and songs through their interest for visual arts as well as traditional music, and this combination is the base of their fresh and poetical music.
Janet Russell Janet first made a name for herself on the folk circuit in the ‘80’s as a young singer songwriter writing with hard-edged humour about issues affecting women. Her “Secretary’s Song” was the most requested song on “Folk on 2” in 1987/8. She has often worked with other musicians, such as Sisters Unlimited and Scottish singing partner Christine Kydd, partner Jim Woodland and storyteller Taffy Thomas. Janet is one of folk’s finest performers and her years of experience show in her warm presence. Todmorden Folk Festival was so proud to present Sisters Unlimited her historic band featuring Sandra Kerr, Peta Webb and Rosie Davies for their very final performance in 2017 after 30 years of touring.
Cath & Phil Tyler Cath & Phil Tyler play Anglo-American folk music using guitar, banjo, voice and fiddle. Coming together musically through a shared love of traditional narrative song, full voiced sacred harp singing and sparse mountain banjo, they have performed on stages as diverse as the Royal Opera House in London and a dank tower in the old city walls of Newcastle.
Todmorden Folk Festival
ARTISTS Lucy Farrell
2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner and member of both The Furrow Collective and Eliza Carthy’s Wayward Band Lucy Farrell is at last embarking on the solo career so many have been hoping for. Expect exquisite renditions of traditional ballads and quietly moving original songs.
She Shanties
This twelve piece women’s shanty crew not only make it obvious that they enjoy a good sing, but they do it ever so well with verve and enterprise. And that joy is conveyed to the audience in buckets!
Andy May Trio
Three award-winning musicians from Newcastle – Northumbrian piper Andy May, guitarist Ian Stephenson and fiddler Sophy Ball – come together to play high energy instrumental folk, inspired by the music of their native North East. Performances might include traditional tunes from Northumberland and newlycomposed material which is sure to draw in both folk aficionados and newcomers alike for a show filled with virtuosity and energy.
Red Hippo
Red Hippo is Peadar Long, Daz Jones and Simon Chantler. They play too many instruments to list including highland bagpipes! Red Hippo are a truly unique trio, who combine Jazz, Folk and World music to create incredible compositions taking the listener on instrumental journeys influenced as much by Swedish traditional folk music as by New Orleans Second Line Jazz, Reggae and Dub.
Shamus O’Blivion and the Megadeth Morris Men
Shamus O`Blivion and the Megadeath Morrismen have been punching above their weight and serving up their unique brand of irreverent humour, powerful folk rooted songs and super fast jigs at venues and music festivals since 1989.
Frog on a Bike Ceilidh Band
Frog on a Bike are an experienced, energetic, dance floor-packing Ceilidh and Barn Dance band. Their enthusiastic playing, big sound and driving
rhythm is guaranteed to have you up and dancing. Whether you are complete beginners or experienced dancers, our musicians and caller will make it a really special night.
Colbalt Tales
Originally from Wigan and Sheffield Pat and Nuala are experienced singer songwriters, described as the U.K.’s Indigo Girls. Pat and Nuala first combined their musical talents in the highlands of Scotland, organising and performing at music events, festivals and gatherings. Pat and Nuala tour extensively throughout the U.K. often playing sell out gigs to their home crowds in Yorkshire, Lancashire and beyond. Songs from the heart that stir the soul.
Nicola Beazley & Brass
Combing her love of research into traditional music, and her upbringing in the brass band world, Nicola’s latest project features her own newly written work, looking at dance tunes influenced by other traditional instrumental English music forms. Nicola will be performing alongside
Todmorden Folk Festival
ARTISTS
her brass trio. Expect newly written dance tunes, some old favourites and some unexpected cross-overs as we examine the past of our folk and non-folk traditional music.
SOMA
The band Soma brings together four colourful musicians from very different backgrounds. Between them, they have experience in many traditions. East European song, jazz, English folk, AfroCuban rhythm, psychedelic rock, blues, shamanism, paganism, middle Eastern frame drumming… they have done it all. Music to gladden the spirit.
Silsden Singers
Silsden Singers is a mixed community choir with around 40 members. They are open to all adults who want to have fun, singing in harmony with others. Most of their songs come from Folk Traditions around the world, including the British Isles. They also sing songs by singer songwriters, and some light-hearted popular songs from the last 50 or 60 years.
Bryony Griffith
Orladh and Leo
Bryony Griffith is a highly accomplished English fiddle player and distinctive singer with a passion for delving through the tune and song manuscripts of her native Yorkshire. Her skills and enthusiasm encompass solo performance, duo work with her husband, Will Hampson and extensive experience of playing for folk dancing, including her role in the BBC Folk Award-winning Demon Barbers. She was also a member of the much missed A cappella quartet The witches of Elswick.
Orladh and Leo are winners of our Young Musician Award in 2019 and their prize is to open our Saturday night concert at the Unitarian. They are both only 13 years old and give us great hope for the future of folk music! Both Orladh and Leo have wide-ranging musical tastes across all genres. Following success in a larger folkbased group led by Rochdale Music Service, they formed a duo playing traditional and contemporary folk, acoustic, country and Americana.
Alice Jones
Heather enjoy performing folk songs, singing in harmony and playing fiddle and guitar, and also whistle and ukulele. Their main musical influence is Kate Rusby as her music fits their personalities and voices very well. Although mainly folk, they sometimes perform ‘pop’ music in a folk style. Heather are not to be missed and won their spot in the festival as runners up in the 2019 Young Musicians Award.
Alice Jones is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and dancer from Ripponden in West Yorkshire. Alice sings mostly traditional songs accompanying herself on the piano or harmonium and sometimes only with foot percussion. The sensitive and intuitive arrangements of each song allow the stories to take centre stage and, inspired by her beginnings as a percussive dancer, they are loaded with a rhythm and energy that portrays her dancer’s heartbeat.

DANCE TEAMS Chiltern Hundreds Morris Chiltern Hundreds are an outstanding northwest clog team based in Watford. Expect high kicking, sharp figures and fantastic music. The eyecatching green and yellow on their kit makes them hard to miss and you’ll be captivated by their energy and infectious groove.
400 Roses Formed in 2005, the 400 Roses are a unique group who combine UK-style folk dancing with more exotic tribal belly dance moves to Morris music played by their band t’Thorns. When designing their costumes they decided to use an abundance of red and white silk roses appropriate to their Yorkshire & Lancashire origins, hence their name. Expect the unexpected!
Strictly Clog Strictly Clog was formed in 2010 by well established clog dance friends who wanted to take clog dancing back to basics with minimum choreography and more emphasis on the partnership with the music. Their first performance was at Beverley that year, and they have since performed at Chippenham, Bromyard, Whitby and Warwick folk festivals, as well as local events, and are very much looking forward to taking part in Todmorden Folk Festival. 10

DANCE TEAMS
Black Gate Morris
Black Gate Morris was formed in 2018, bringing together Morris veterans and complete beginners to form Newcastle’s first and only mixed Cotswold side. Our current repertoire includes dances from the Adderbury, Bledington, Bucknell and Raglan traditions; and we can be recognised by our red, yellow and grey kit, combining the colours of Northumberland and the city of Newcastle
Ryburn Long Sword
Ryburn Longsword is a team of Longsword dancers based in Ripponden near Halifax, we started in 1994. We dance traditional Longsword dances from villages across Yorkshire
and some others which we have created ourselves. Our dances are performed by five, six or eight dancers in a circle, dancing over or under one of the swords, and a characteristic feature of each dance is the “Lock” where swords are intertwined in one of a variety of shapes
Thieving Magpie
Thieving Magpie are a mixed border morris side who like dancing, waving big sticks about and yelling. They were formed in 2006 and ages range from 20 to 73.
White Rose
White Rose are based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Originally formed in the autumn of 1953 by a number of Leeds University Morris Men and others who wished to form a non-university side, White Rose Morris men met initially in the Burley Road scout headquarters and were helped by Ron Smedley,
the EFDSS Yorkshire Area Organiser. We’re very pleased to have these festival regulars with us!
Persephone Women’s Northwest Morris
Persephone Women’s Northwest Morris from West Yorkshire, began dancing in 1978. In 2012 the dancers‘ kit was updated to a black top and flared skirt with green and yellow trimmings and a diagonal sash, symbolising the colours of spring. Sticks, bobbins, garlands and slings are used in the dances, some traditional, others written by team members, in the North West style. The band comprises meldoeons, accordians, clarinet, and drums. Persephone dances at festivals, weekends and days of dance countrywide.

POP UP ARTISTS Cafe Spice Café Spice are a trio who create heavenly and Autumnal harmonies reminiscent of Mamas & Papas whilst also sitting with the effortlessly sublime indie-folk of contemporaries such as The Staves or HAIM. It would seem three is a winning number. They spend time playing live around Manchester where they reside, further training their already impressive vocal prowess. Their debut recording, ‘Lauren,’was supported by Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music) as part of the BBC Introducing Mixtape.
Rum Doodle Rum Doodle are a folk roots acoustic duo from Leeds. Martin & BB Tim play mostly their own original songs with influences as broad as Christy Moore & The Dubliners to Bob Dylan & Neil Young. A lot of the material draws it’s inspiration from these Islands we live in, be it about our wonderful heritage and different languages to growing up besides the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. But most important is the CRAIC.
Four Hoarsemen Formed in 2015, The Four Hoarsemen all hail from the upper Calder valley. They sing an eclectic mix of folk, barbershop, self penned and Georgian in accapella harmony. They perform regularly around West Yorkshire including gigs in Huddersfield, Leeds and Hebden Bridge Folk Roots festival in 2017. They’re well chuffed to be invited to sing again at a home town festival. 12

Our club comes from a love of singing and from the idea that anyone can get together, sing for the enjoyment of it and find solidarity in song! We’ll be opening the Friday evening concert and running Singalonga Sound of Protest on Sunday afternoon. There is nothing more solidaritymaking than a much needed communal tuneful rant. Join us in a raucous and fun session of protest singing. Some old, some newer, some surprises! No previous singing experience necessary. Bring yourself and your enthusiasm. Come raise the rafters with us!
Matt Besford

She has performed all over Europe and plans a world tour next year. She is from Blackpool, but no-one is perfect.
West Riding Concertina Ensemble
Throughout the later part of the Nineteenth and the first half of the Twentieth Centuries concertina bands were popular across the North of England. These bands were the same size as Brass Bands, about 24 players, and played a similar repertoire - marches, airs and popular tunes of the time. The West Riding Concertina Ensemble were formed to play the type of music that these bands would be playing today.
Rik Munchie
A busker for 25 years Rik Munchie plays the electric mandolin mixing East European Folk melodies with Irish Folk and Psychedelic delays.
13
Phil Reed
“Be whisked away by Phil Reed as he plays haunting traditional Irish melodies over live percussive and harmonious loops.” Phil has been playing tin whistle and bodhrán for twenty years, often incorporating both instruments into the same performance. He builds layers of sound using a loop pedal, starting with rhythmic percussion, adding polyphonic harmonies on low whistles, then finally a set of melodies on tin whistle at the top.
Magpahi
Magpahi is the solo project of Alison Cooper who’s work has ebbed and flowed in the fringes of folk for a decade playing whimsical acoustics and sepia stories inspired by absent narratives of the past.
Rebecca Lee and Marie Thompson

EVENTS SCHEDULE A Note on our Venues We are blessed in Todmorden with incredible acoustic spaces and we try to make the most of them. The churches we use, St Mary’s, Central Methodist and The Unitarian as with many churches were built to carry sound. Alongside this they are just beautiful spaces to be in and we’re glad to be making the most of them again this year. The pubs and restaurants that hosts events throughout the weekend all serve great food and drink so do get involved in that and we’ll be serving up Little Valley beer at our own bars in St Mary’s and The Unitarian. We’ll also be providing
hot food at the ceilidh and concert on Friday night and at the Unitarian Church on Saturday. Todmorden Hippodrome opened in 1908 and over 100 years later we are really proud to welcome you into this lovely new space for our Sunday night concert.
