O

know the new law

n 1st September 2013 the regulation regarding children taking time out of school has been changed. This change may well affect you so make sure you know exactly what the changes are.

(England) Regulations 2006 used to allow Headteachers to grant leave of absence for the purpose of a family holiday during term time in “special circumstances” (such as parents with

If you have children of school age, you may have be aware that you can ask your Headteacher’s permission for time away from school, for your child, for up to 10 days per year. But, from the beginning of this new school year, that rule has been changed meaning, if you do take your children out of school during term time, you could be fined or prosecuted. he Climbing Skool was established when two local friends, from different backgrounds of business and climbing, got together and decided that Todmorden needed something to inspire all ages to reach new heights.

The right venue was found and the project was born. Twelve weeks later the building was complete. The new climbing and bouldering wall location is on Vale Street, close to Todmorden fire station and within easy walking distance of both the train and bus station. There is good local parking and it is close to the town centre The wall has over 50 graded routes plus a bouldering wall for low level climbing, traverse routes and problem solving. Georgina, one of the founders said “We really do have something to suit everyone. This is a sport that anyone can try with the minimum of outlay and, best of all, it’s all indoors so rain or shine, Summer or Winter, you can still train!” “As well as being able to come in and

boulder or climb, we offer courses to suit all abilities. We can even tailor make a course to suit your requirements. We cater for one-to-one or family groups and everything in between! We can do taster sessions, birthday parties through to advanced ropework and climbing sessions, plus fitness classes. We run a range of after school clubs and Climbing Skool academy courses to help develop skills and encourage progression. We also do weekday and weekend fun climbing sessions too.” Climbing is a fantastic physical and mental workout. It teaches body and movement awareness as well as the ability to judge three dimensional space, whilst problem solving, all during a great cardio vascular workout. The advice is, don’t be put off trying climbing by thinking it’s all about physical strength; mental strength and agility along with good climbing technique is what it’s all about. “We have great plans for the Climbing Skool’s future” said Georgina, “With a friendly welcome to all visitors, we offer a fantastic facility right in the heart of the town and hope to inspire people to come and try this great sport.”

inflexible work leave, a family wedding, etc) of up to ten school days leave per year. Headteachers could also grant extended leave for more than ten school days in exceptional circumstances. The 2013 Amendment to this regulation removes the reference to “family holiday” and “extended leave”, as well as the statutory threshold of ten school days. The amendments make clear that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances and then Headteachers should determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if the leave is granted. So don’t get caught out. You can no longer book holidays during term time.

out & about Singleton Maize Maze

I

wanted to try something completely different with my older children, rather than another park, castle, theme park or museum; something we could all enjoy together.

A maize maze is a confusing series of paths created within a field of corn that is between eight and ten feet tall. This is definitely a weather-dependant summer/autumn activity. These crop mazes typically open each year in July, but by October the maize season is coming to an end and the plants are harvested, usually for animal feed. The Maize Maze at Singleton changes every year, with a different theme and new challenges. I thought this would be just the activity to entertain my six and eight year old but, as it’s situated on a 12 acre site, I thought it would be too hard going for my four year old. I was right on both counts. So I packed up a picnic and filled the car with everything; wellies, waterproofs, sunhats, sun cream and lots of drinks. The Maize Maze is situated at Mount Farm, which was well signposted. It is a working farm which you drive through to get to the parking area. Parking is free. First of all, adjacent to the car park area, there are some free activities. Ideal to explore and keep your group entertained should the weather ‘turn’. There was an indoor and outdoor play area, pedal go-karts, a trampoline, even

a mini-maze for those who don’t want to walk far. But we had come for the main attraction so, not letting the other activities distract my explorers, we all agreed to go for it, and get lost! We paid our entrance fee and were given a flag, an option to buy a maze map (in a sealed envelope at £1) and a clue sheet. The flag is in case things get too much and you really are lost; you wave your flag and the helper, who is permanently situated at a lookout point, ‘guides’ you to freedom. I seriously recommend you buy a map or you may not emerge at the exit for a week! The clue sheet is this year’s challenge. You find ten pointers hidden in the maze, each with a question. The completed answer sheets can then be entered into a prize draw. And so the adventure begins… I carried a little rucksack full of drinks and energy snacks; my son had the map and was chief navigator and my daughter led with the flag. The walking was quite bumpy in places (it is farmland), so sensible footwear is necessary. Halfway through, when we had got six out of the ten clues, we needed a

break. We navigated our way back to the entrance and found the main play area and a number of picnic tables. I fetched our lunch and we rested our feet for a while. After lunch we ventured in to the maze again to find the final clues. We were getting the hang of it now and we actually discovered the last pointers quite easily. We emerged from the maze at the exit, victorious in our efforts. To celebrate we had a delicious homemade ice cream from the farm shop. There was time for some of the extra activities although we decided not to try the mini-maze; we had seen enough maize for one day! Food, drink and ice cream prices were reasonable and the toilets were basic but clean. Some families had chosen to split themselves up, with one parent looking after the younger ones in the play area, while the other was in the maze with the older ones. All in all it was a fantastic day out, definitely made better by the sunshine and a great way of spending quality time with the children. Go on, I dare you. Go and get lost! The Maze remains open at weekends in September with some Friday nights being special torch-light nights. The final day for this year’s maze is Friday 25th October with a Halloween Special Fright Night. More details are on the website. By Tracey Sunderland

out & about

animal quackers

I

was looking to find an animal petting farm not too far away from the Calderdale area, when through word of mouth I came across this gem of a place, just over the hills in Bacup.

I chatted to other parents who had visited the farm, all with glowing reports so, as soon as we had a sunny weekend, we packed a picnic and headed over to see for ourselves. The farm is literally a few minutes drive from Bacup town centre. Coming from Todmorden direction on the A681, you’ll arrive in the town centre / roundabout. Continue on the A681, towards Rawtenstall, into Market Street and, almost immediately, take the right hand turn into Bankside Lane. Continue on this road and follow the signs to ‘Animal Quackers’ up to Newchurch Old Road. The road up to the farm is a short distance, but pot-holed, so please take it slowly. As soon as we arrived we received the warmest welcome and even the farmer’s young children took delight in showing my daughter some baby chicks, lambs, rabbits, geese and ducklings who were all happily lazing in the sunshine. Farmer Terry, who set up the farm several years ago, gives a regular tour as

well as helping with the animal petting and feeding sessions throughout the day. He clearly adores the animals and his infectious enthusiasm and a repartee in hilarious, corny jokes makes this a fun day out for all. Farmer Terry is a star and several other parents who’d visited the farm mentioned how great he was with the kids. A cross between Steve Irwin and Tommy Cooper! We also learnt some fascinating facts, such as a donkey in desert conditions is able to hear the bray of another donkey over 60 miles away! When Basil the Donkey breaks out in full cry, you quickly realise this is no exaggeration! For a small farm there’s a great variety of animals. Everything from Highland cattle to baby chicks. There are reindeer, sheep, Micro Pigs, Barn Owls, baby rabbits, Gloucestershire All Spot pigs, miniature ponies, ‘Ant’ & ‘Dec’ the Kid Goats, Basil the Donkey and many, many more. My 4 year old daughter loved every minute and we stayed most of the day as she kept revisiting her favourite animals (in other words, ALL of them), bottle feeding lambs, walking with a pony and merrily chatting away to the goats. There was plenty of opportunities for the children (and adults!) to stroke and interact with all kinds of animals, from soft bunnies and lambs, to much more exotic creatures. There are foot baths

as you enter, plenty of hand washing stations and frequent gentle reminders from the staff for visitors to wash their hands after petting the animals. The farm is also a unique place to hold children’s birthday parties. Contact the farm for more information. The farm also holds special events throughout the year including the ‘Farm of Terror’ days at Halloween time and egg hunts during Easter. There is a small café serving a variety refreshments and simple meals, all very reasonably priced. It may lack some of the giant ball pools, indoor play parks and gimmicks of larger farm attractions but Animal Quackers more than makes up for that with its warm welcome and Farmer Terry’s love of showing children the world of animals. You’ll remember a great day out with a huge smile on your face. We’ll definitely be regular visitors throughout the year. The farm is open every weekend and on Bank Holidays. It opens 7 days a week during the school Summer holidays. Opening times are 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the last entry at 4.00pm. By Richard Dalby

focus on: high school application process

I

f your child has just entered year 6, and turns 11 during this new school year, it is time to start thinking about secondary schools.

The application process is very similar to the Primary school application process, but applications close on 31st October, much earlier than for Primary schools. There is a Common Preference Form to fill in, on which you can put up to five school choices, in order of preference. This form will be supplied by your primary school or can be filled in on-line. Once again, all choices are considered equally and, only if your child is eligible for more than one school will the preference order be taken into account.

Important Points

In the area this magazine covers, there are two comprehensive high schools, Todmorden High and Calder High. Their priority (catchment) areas are defined and do not overlap. Therefore, most children will be eligible for one school or the other depending on where they live. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put you preferred school at the top of your list, irrespective of where you live, but you should be aware of the criteria the allocation process uses should one school be over subscribed. See box for details.

Grammar schools

There are also two Grammar schools in Calderdale you may like to consider for your child. If you wish your child to be invited to take the school entrance exam then you must include one, or both of them, on your preference form. The exam usually takes place in early December. A single exam will be used to find the 310 pupils to fill the admissions for both grammar schools (155 in each).

Over-subscription criteria Places will be allocated in the community/trust secondary schools in the following order of priority: 1. Pupils who are in public care (‘Looked After’ children) or pupils who were previously looked after but ceased to be so because they became adopted or became subject to a residence or special guardianship order. 2. Pupils living within the defined priority (catchment) area who have a brother or sister (including step/half brothers and sisters) permanently resident in the same household and currently attending the school (excluding pupils in their final year). 3. Other pupils living within the defined priority (catchment) area. 4. Those pupils who do not qualify under Categories 1-3 who have a brother or sister (including step/half brothers and sisters) permanently resident in the same household and currently attending the school (excluding pupils in their final year). 5. Other children - (distance). If there is over-subscription within any category, then pupils will be admitted in the order of proximity of the pupil’s permanent home to the school. Distance will be calculated using a straight line measurement from the pupil’s permanent home to the closest designated school gate. Distance will be calculated using the Local Authority’s GIS system (Geographical Information System). To ensure consistency applies, all measurements will be carried out using the Local Authority’s GIS system and no other method of measuring distance will be considered. Each property has a coordinate taken from Ordnance Survey ADDRESS-POINT data. This is the point which distance measurements will be taken from Children with statements of Special Educational Needs (SEN) will always be given priority to the school which is named on the statement. Taken from Calderdale.gov.uk

bloke page in a kitchen header Blueberry Oven Pancake By Richard Dalby

T

his wonderful, easy to prepare, custardy pudding is based on a traditional Scandinavian recipe called Pannukakku

It seems every cuisine around the world has its own unique take on pancakes and this makes a nice change to the flat round ones we have with lemon and sugar. Because it’s baked in the oven and doesn’t involve butter or oil hissing and spitting in a frying pan, young children can safely help prepare it. Give it a go, what better excuse do you need to have pancakes more than just once a year? Serve with a good vanilla ice cream and warm jam for the perfect Autumnal treat.

6 large free range eggs

Method 1.

350ml milk 50g caster sugar

2.

1 teaspoon vanilla extract Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 225g plain flour 1 level teaspoon salt 1 level teaspoon baking powder 200g blueberries 50g butter

3. 4. 5. 6.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar and sugar until creamy. Stir in the grated lemon zest. Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder, and stir well into egg mixture until smooth. Add the blueberries and give another quick final stir. Allow the batter to rest and thicken slightly, for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 450º F / 230ºC / Gas Mark 8. When the pancake batter has rested, place butter in a large oven-proof dish. Put the dish in

the oven and allow the butter to melt, without browning. 7. Once your butter has melted, remove dish from oven, and use a pastry brush to coat surface and sides of dish evenly with the melted butter. 8. Pour your pancake batter into the hot, buttered pan and return to middle shelf of the oven. 9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until puffed and golden. 10. Perfect served warm, with vanilla ice cream and a drizzling of warm bramble jam.

Are YOU and your child protected?

A

measles outbreak in Wales is a reminder of the importance of MMR vaccination. It’s never too late to get your children (or yourself) vaccinated against this dangerous illness. If your children haven’t yet had the MMR vaccination, don’t delay. There have been over 800 confirmed cases of measles in Swansea and the outbreak shows no sign of slowing down. Measles isn’t trivial. It’s a very infectious, nasty illness which, in rare cases, can be fatal. About one in five children with measles experiences complications such as ear infections, diarrhoea and vomiting, pneumonia, meningitis, and eye disorders. One in 10 children with measles ends up in hospital. There is no treatment for measles. Vaccination is the only way of preventing it. It’s an illness that spreads very easily. In fact, it’s one of the most infectious diseases known. You can catch measles if you spend just 15 minutes with someone who has the disease. What can surprise people is that if adults get measles, they are likely to become more ill than children and for a longer period of time. Someone with measles generally has to spend five days in bed and be off work for 10 days. They are also more prone to more illnessrelated complications than children. Calderdale may be a fair distance from Wales; however, outbreaks of measles can happen anywhere at any time, so it’s important that your children are up-to-date with their MMR and other childhood vaccinations. If your child has already had two doses of MMR vaccine, you don’t need to worry. Similarly if your child had their

18

first dose of MMR as a baby but they are not yet old enough to have received their second dose, this counts as them being up to date and there is no need to have the second MMR dose earlier than scheduled. However, if your child is school aged and has only had one MMR dose, or not been vaccinated at all, they really should be vaccinated as soon as possible. It’s never too late for your children (or yourself) to ‘catch up’ with MMR vaccination if they missed it earlier. Children up to the age of 18 and adults without immunity should have a catchup MMR vaccination. Babies under six months usually have some antibodies to measles already in their system, passed on from their mum at the time of birth, which may give them some protection for the first few months. But this residual immunity also interferes with their response to the MMR vaccine. So, the best approach for children under six months is to try to avoid them having any contact with measles. MMR vaccination is usually given as a first dose around the age of 13 months and then again as a ‘booster’ jab before school at age three to five. If your child has already had the vaccine it should be recorded in their medical notes and in their personal health record (the `Red

Book`). Ask your GP or Health Visitor if you’re not sure. The MMR vaccination is available to adults and children free on the NHS. To confirm you need two doses of MMR to be fully protected. The first dose of the MMR jab protects 90% of those who receive it, and the second dose tops this up to 99% protection. Almost all of the children in Wales who have caught measles were either completely unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated. To arrange a vaccination call your local GP practice and make an appointment for an MMR jab. It involves two doses which can be given just a month apart to protect as quickly as possible. If you aren’t registered with a GP, find the nearest doctor’s surgery who will give your family the jabs. Remember - It’s not just children who can benefit from MMR vaccination. Adults who are unsure whether they’ve had measles or been vaccinated, particularly if they’re carers or work with children, can have the MMR vaccine on the NHS from their GP. Bear in mind that most adults born before 1970 are likely to be immune because they have probably been exposed to measles already.

p Tips to save you money Train Travel With Kids? – Get A Railcard

If you regularly travel by train with your children, look into buying a Family & Friends Railcard. They cost £30 but, with the third off most adult fares and 60% off children’s fares that they provide, you can often save the cost in one trip. They last for one year and cover the whole of Britain. To get the reduction the party must consist of one adult and at least one child aged between 5 and 16, but can be as big as four adults and four children. In fact, with the card, it is often worth borrowing a child to save you money! www.familyandfriends-railcard.co.uk for more information.

Turn Your Old Gadgets Into Cash

Families with kids often find the number of old, worn-out or out-of-date gadgets that accumulate, unused, in drawers grows steadily month on month. Lots of companies offer to recycle these for cash and will even send you a freepost bag to make the job even easier. Try https://tradein. asda.com/ or CeX, for an in store valuation (stores in Halifax & Burnley) http:// uk.webuy.com/

Outlet Clothing Sales

Outlet shopping has been around for a long time – big name brands selling last year’s stock at reduced prices, but many are now available online. Have a look at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ and search for your favourite brand. Boden, Littlewoods and Sole Trader are all there, plus many more.

Vouchers

Hundreds of vouchers are available online every day and it is always worth checking out offers before you set off to spend any money. The big family attractions, such as Theme Parks and Zoos often have money off vouchers, printable online. 2-for-1 or 15% off offers are common but check whether you can use more than one voucher per entrance or which voucher would save you most money. Family-friendly restaurant chains often have vouchers running; Frankie & Benny’s, Pizza Express, etc. even Little Chef if you’re planning a long road trip! Finally, it’s always worth doing a quick check before you head off shopping for any high street store vouchers. A fairly extensive website that lists many of the deals in an easy, clear way, is www. vouchercodes. co.uk .

Don’t Pay For Stuff You Don’t Use

Have a look through your latest bank statement. Are there any direct debits on there you don’t actually benefit from? The main culprits are magazine subscriptions, gym membership, tv channel subscriptions or even paying for extras packaged with your bank account such as travel insurance. If you won’t miss them, cancel them!

family health page header Physio & Therapies in Todmorden offers treatments for a wide range of family health issues. If you have any questions, queries or concerns you would like to ask an expert about please get in touch by any of the methods shown on page 3.

My Health Visitor wants to refer my son to a Speech & Language Therapist but I’m not clear what the problem might be or how this might help. Could you tell me a bit more about this please? Speech, language and communication play a vital role in a child’s life. Without being able to talk and understand other people, a child can’t do things like: • Communicate with their families and friends and make their needs known • Play and interact with other children • Understand what people say to them • Learn effectively and achieve their full potential Most children develop communication skills from birth. A newborn baby communicates with its mother through eye contact

during feeding. In the next few weeks and months, through crying, early sounds and gestures, he starts to learn how his basic needs can be met and begins to share experiences. As they grow older, children need to learn; • to understand words, sentences and conversations. This is often called ‘receptive language’. • how to talk using words and sentences. This is often called ‘expressive language’. • to use their language socially. For example, listening as well as talking, or talking to a teacher differently than to a friend. • to say speech sounds correctly so they can be understood by others. They normally do this in a definite order. For example children begin to understand words

They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.

before they can say them. Next they learn how to say words, then how to put them together to make sentences. However, there is quite a variation in the speed at which they develop speech, language and communication skills. Some develop quickly, while others may take longer. Before children learn to talk they need to develop their early communication skills, such as: looking, joint attention, early play, taking turns and listening. So you can see that ‘communication’ includes lots of things that do not actually involve ‘speech’ and ‘language’ but which are essential bricks in the foundation for normal development of communication skills. Particularly with younger children, a Speech and Language Therapist will be assessing how these are developing.

What can go wrong? Speech, language and communication underpin everything we do – making our needs known, expressing our likes and dislikes, interacting with others and building relationships. We often take these skills for granted, but some children can struggle to communicate. A child with speech, language and communication needs might: • Have poor attention and/or not be able to listen to what is said to them • Have difficulty with developing pretend and imaginative play and with sharing and taking turns in play. • Not understand words that are being used, or the instructions they hear • Have speech that is difficult to understand or may have a stammer • Not talk at all in specific settings – this is called selective mutism. • Not progress beyond the use of single words to communicate. • Struggle to construct ordered sentences because of word access or grammatical difficulties. • Have difficulty knowing how to talk and listen to others in a conversation - taking turns Children may have some or many of these difficulties; they are all very different. If you feel that a child may have any of the communication difficulties I have listed above, or if a Speech & Language Therapist has been suggested by a health professional, you could phone me for a chat and I will be able to advise you on how Speech and Language Therapy might be helpful. You may also find the website www.talkingpoints.org.uk helpful for checking out what communication levels are appropriate for your child’s age. If you decide to bring your child to clinic for assessment, the first thing I will do is to help him or her feel relaxed, and to enjoy being in the clinic. After a little while most children can be encouraged to engage in something they like doing and this will help me assess their communication skills. Most of the assessment and therapy with children is done through play and fun activities and they usually look forward to coming! If you would like more information about the therapy process, please contact me at Physio & Therapies. John Andreae Speech and Language Therapist
