news Selfie Queen Kelly;
sharing her slimming secrets with Todmorden!
L
ocal girl Kelly Owen, 33, has changed her life and her outlook by losing over 2 stone in weight and, with her newfound camera confidence, she’s set to relaunch the Slimming World group at Todmorden Cricket Club in September.
As a mum of toddling twins, Kelly wasn’t feeling at her best in January. Kelly tells us: “I’d always been the bigger friend. My weight had yo-yo’d for a long time and I’d tried lots of ways to lose weight, without success. I hated shopping and always felt disheartened when I saw myself in the mirror. Social media is such a big thing these days and whenever I saw my photo posted on Facebook my heart sank.” How Kelly was feeling about herself was having an impact on her confidence and her energy levels as a Mum and so, determined to make a change, she decided to join her local Slimming World group. “I was nervous before first joining as I didn’t know anyone and was feeling really embarrassed that I had got so big. But I received a lovely warm welcome from the consultant and the other members and have never looked back. In fact it’s the group where I get so much from; ideas, recipes and warmth and support on the tough weeks. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
By making changes to the way she shops, cooks and eats Kelly lost 6.5lbs in her first week and she hasn’t looked back. She says: “I couldn’t believe the big plates of food I could eat. I could still enjoy family favourites like Sunday roast, pasta bake and lazy English breakfast. The Food Optimising plan fits in so well with the family, and I’ve still been able to enjoy a glass of Prosecco!” Along the way Kelly has also increased her exercise. “I’ve played netball for some time but my energy levels have increased so much with the weight loss. I’m no longer self-conscious in my netball kit and have even joined the ladies cricket team and TRX training – something I wouldn’t have contemplated just 8 months ago.” To top it all Kelly is loving her family time now she has more energy than ever to run around after her 3 year olds. So, what about those photos on social media? “Bring it on!” Kelly says. “I’m now a full blown selfie queen and proud of it!” Kelly’s journey at Slimming world has given her the confidence and motivation to become a consultant and she relaunched the group at Todmorden CC at the beginning of September. “Knowing how losing weight has made me feel, I can’t wait to help and support others to make their own lifechanging decisions. I promise to provide safe and supportive surroundings with a load of fun to help members along their way.”

news the power of a simple gift
I
n 1990, Dave Cooke, a father of four from Wrexham, North Wales, first saw the horror of abandoned children in Romanian orphanages on the TV news and asks friends to help fill a truck with toys to drive it to Romania. He received an overwhelming response from local people, raising £60,000. From this start, Operation Christmas Child was established as a charity. On 12th December that year a convoy of vehicles, including trucks donated by local companies, left for Romania with 17 local volunteers. Among the aid on the convoy were the first gift-filled shoeboxes. On their return the volunteers vowed to continue the work. The charity continued to grow and in 1993 a 10-vehicle convoy of aid left Wrexham for Romania. Songs of Praise, with Alan Titchmarsh, broadcast from Wrexham with a live link up to the Operation Christmas Child convoy team in a church in Romania. Also that year, the Biggest Cargo plane in the world, the Antonov 124, took 60,000 shoeboxes to Zagreb. Hundreds of local school children attend the send off from Liverpool airport. By 1994 the charity had expanded well beyond sending toys to orphans. They opened a family style orphanage in Cluj, Romania and sent medical aid to Rwanda in response to the genocide. They also sent 250,000 shoeboxes to children in Bosnia & Croatia, Serbia,
Kenya, Rwanda, Russia, Romania, Hungary and Albania 1995 saw the biggest change as Operation Christmas Child merged with the charity Samaritan’s Purse. This meant the shoebox appeal could also launch in other countries and, in 1996, over a million boxes were sent around the world from 36 countries. Media coverage, including shoeboxes donated by Tony and Cherie Blair, meant that, by 2001, the UK alone was sending over 1 million boxes to children in even more countries than before. This reached a high of 1.3 million in 2007. in 2010 ‘Shoebox world’ was launched which allows donors the make a virtual shoebox on-line including a message and a photo of themselves. The shoebox is then made up in a
warehouse and despatched overseas. There have now been well over 100 million shoeboxes delivered to the poorest children in the world, changing their lives for the better. If you would like to give something to a child who has nothing, make up your box and take it to your nearest drop-off point between 1st and 18th November or make it up online at www. shoeboxworld.co.uk for a set price of £15 per box.
Young Parents Group “Being a good mother has nothing to do with age, but more the size of your heart. If you can love enough to know you will do anything to protect and care for your children, little else matters.”
Here at Todmorden Children’s Centre we offer a Young Parents group for families 25 years and under. The sessions are run every week by a Family Outreach Worker to support and advise families around issues such as parenting, behaviour and routines. The Family Outreach Worker can also provide emotional support to families that may have additional needs. The Young Parent sessions are packed with lots of fun activities and learning experiences for families to take part in within the group. The sessions give families an opportunity to interact and play with their children to encourage good attachments, to meet new people and make friends. The group also prevents families from
feeling socially isolated and promotes confidence and self-esteem. Todmorden Children Centre welcomes any parent under 25 years old - male or female. The group runs on Monday afternoons 1:30 – 3:00pm (school term time only). Each session provides a healthy snack for children followed by singing or stories. Activities are based on the interests of the children so we can take in consideration the needs of the children and families attending the sessions.

news could you be an independent visitor?
C
alderdale Council is looking for volunteers to support its work with children and young people in care. Volunteers are needed for the Council’s Independent Visitors scheme. Independent Visitors are adult role models for children in care, who meet with them once a month to help with their personal and social development. This could be something as simple as taking them bowling after school or to the cinema at the weekend. No formal qualifications are required to volunteer as an Independent Visitor, but it is necessary that you have had some experience and contact with children and young people. This is a
long term volunteering opportunity, so we ask that volunteers are able to support a child or young person for at least 12 months. Most people can be an Independent Visitor. We are seeking adults aged 21 or over who: • Get on well with children and young people • Have lots of patience and enthusiasm • Can communicate easily with children and young people Training will be provided, and will start in September this year. Volunteers need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and the Council will cover the cost of this. Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Cllr Megan Swift, said: “We’re looking for patient and caring adult volunteers who can spare a few
hours a month to be role models for children in care. “An Independent Visitor is an adult volunteer who, in the short term, provides time and space for a child to try new experiences and develop different skills. In the long term an Independent Visitor can help a child increase their self-esteem and confidence, encourage social interaction and raise their aspirations. “By dedicating a few hours each month, you will spend quality time, one to one, with a child in care and become a positive role model for them.” If you’re interested in giving your time to help a young person, there will be information sessions held in August and full training starts in September.

On this first page we have the Pre-school and Playgroups that run in our area. These usually offer free sessions for children aged 3 and over for 15 hours per week during term time. Contact them directly for more information. The Out of School Clubs listings are for older children who require care outside normal school hours or during holidays. Those
listed take all children, not just those who attend any associated school. The bottom section shows opening times for places you might like to visit regularly with your child. The centre spread is the Pre-school Diary. White background is for drop-in sessions, shaded background is for bookable activities. All sessions will require an adult to remain with the child at all times. Most activities charge a small fee; all Children’s Centre services are free, with any donations gratefully

Gawthorpe Hall
V
isiting historical houses is not something we do a lot of; in fact, up until this recent half term holiday we hadn’t visited one at all.
As a mother of three, mostly wellbehaved but naturally curious children, I have that fear that if we visit a stately home they will no doubt try to drink out of the priceless china on display, bounce on the irreplaceable Queen Anne bed or attempt to play the rare harpsichord that is being exhibited. The ultimate fear is that they try to do all of these things together and at the same time. It was a lovely spring day and I decided to be brave and take the children to Gawthorpe Hall. My thoughts that supported this idea were that it is a place steeped in history yet small enough to hold their attention and short concentration span. In addition, although it is a property partly looked after by the National Trust (NT), it is reasonably priced to take a short tour around and then explore the outside gardens and parkland, where you are free to wander at will. All in all, it seemed a good place to start in terms of introducing the children to visiting historical and formal stately homes. Gawthorpe Hall is an Elizabethan country house located just outside Padiham, designated a grade I listed building. The Hall is financed and run by the National Trust in partnership with Lancashire County Council and had just had opened after having some vital restoration work completed. It was originally built between 1600 and 1605; then in 1850 was restored
by Sir Charles Barry (architect of the Houses of Parliament and the ‘real’ Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle). Originally, Gawthorpe Hall was built for the Shuttleworth family who lived there for over 300 years. The Hall houses the largest collection of paintings on permanent loan from the National Portrait Gallery, displays period furniture as well as The Gawthorpe Textiles collection; an extensive collation of intricate lace, embroidery and needlework gathered by the last resident family member Miss Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth. It was easy enough to find and the carpark, although not big, is free. (This is unusual for NT properties, so another advantage of going). We had arrived too early, as the Hall doesn’t open for tours until 12.00 (Wednesday – Sunday only), so we took advantage of the fine weather and explored the gardens and surrounding parkland. This was a great opportunity for the children to let off steam and enjoy the scenery, as well as spotting ducks, squirrels and rabbits. It should also be mentioned that Burnley Football Club train at a centre in the grounds and were doing so that morning we visited, the boys found this aspect of the scenery very interesting. The entrance fee for each of us was £4.00, (so reasonable in NT terms). Once entering Gawthorpe, you certainly feel like you are taking a step back in time. There are guides in almost all of the rooms (volunteers from Lancashire Museums), they were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful. They really tried hard to engage
with the children and answer their questions; (if not always about the place or time in history we were visiting!) There was a trail sheet that the children were given to complete, however this was somewhat of a hindrance at times; if they have had it their way, they would have completed the quiz in record time and we would have been ‘done and dusted’ in 15 minutes. As it is, we spent just under an hour looking around before the children started to get bored. I thought that was a fair amount of time, as Gawthorpe Hall is not big. We then took a wander and explored the ornate formal walled gardens to the rear of the Hall. The children especially loved this part. There is a small NT tearoom selling a selection of sandwiches and cakes. As usual we took a picnic and ate it in the car, even though there are picnic tables dotted around the parkland area. The children enjoyed the day out as it was something different to see, do and experience. Although I wouldn’t suggest visiting an historical house every time we had a day out, I would definitely recommend going on a sunny day so the whole of grounds, including the Hall can be explored. Suffice to say Gawthorpe Hall survived a visit from my children, they had a pleasant time and I came home with nerves intact. Result! Tracey Sunderland

Q I’ve loved watching the Rio 2016 Olympics and it’s made me determined to get fit again, but with a toddler and a 4 month old baby boy there never seems time and it’s so long since I’ve exercised I don’t know where to start – can you help? A As a Mum you’re busy morning till night but it’s possible to turn everyday activities into a workout that you can do at home in minutes. The trick is to involve your kids in your fitness routine; firstly so you don’t lose time with them, secondly so you can use them as weights and thirdly to instil great fitness examples for them to follow through life! After a baby the normal advice is to wait 6 weeks before getting back into exercise to ensure you have recovered from the trauma of birth. Even after this it’s important that you are sure your pelvic floor and abdominals are functioning well before you push on to harder exercises and it may be worth asking your GP to check this or visiting a Physiotherapist to be sure. So that you can really feel the benefits, health professionals recommend that adults exercise for 30 minutes a day at moderate intensity, 5 times a week. To prevent obesity, adults should aim for 45–60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every day. ‘Moderate intensity’ means that both your heart and breathing rates should increase, and you might break a sweat, but you should still be able to hold a conversation. However exercise doesn’t need to be expensive or take up lots of time - you can fit it in to things you do every day at home with your family.
They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.
Housework - is a perfect way to combine a little exercise with your usual activities. Turn chores into a workout by speeding them up or being more energetic. Turn up the music, sing along with your toddler and turn housework into a workout. When vacuuming, use long drawnout movements and use the whole body instead of just your arm and dance as you do your chores. Exercise with your baby – who needs a gym when you have a baby! • Put your baby in their baby carrier and use them as a weight! Then do squats and lunges – start with 10 and build up as you are able. • Lying on your back with your baby sat on your pelvis and your hands supporting him do gentle abdominal curl ups to smile or pull faces at him – babyies love this and you get a great tummy workout! • Lying on your back with your knees up place your baby on your shins and play aeroplanes – this works your tummy really hard and is great fun. • Do a baby press – lying down on your back push your baby up into the air – support him round his ribcage and never by his arms – this is a great triceps workout for you and will tone up your arms. Walking - Exercising outdoors is beneficial for both your body and mind, so walking with the buggy is great – walk briskly for as long as you can – 30 minutes is a good target to work towards – then you can start to jog with the buggy – if that sounds scary just jog for 30 seconds then walk for a few minutes and then repeat. Where possible, walk up and down stairs, instead of taking the lift. Stair climbing is an effective workout – it gets your heart rate going, burns calories, and can increase the strength in your legs and buttocks. If you don’t have access to stairs, you can gain similar benefits from marching on the spot. Why not try this with your baby in their carrier – it increases the workout! Playing games with your toddler is another great time to get a workout. Set physical activity challenges, such as running on the spot or star jumps and do a star chart for you both so you can see how you improve.
Dancing is an effective and fun way to stay fit, increase stamina and flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles and help weight loss. You don’t have to be going out to hit the dance floor – turn up your favourite tunes and dance around your home with the kids! DIY gym - Keep your muscles toned and flexible and your body will be more able to cope with physical stresses. Your body will be stronger and more stable – making you less prone to injuries and illness. Try these simple exercises: • Holding a small bottle of water, sit down or stand with your feet hip-width apart and your back straight, bend your arm at the elbow in a bicep curl. Keep your elbow close to your body. Repeat 10 times, then swap arms • For your triceps, hold the bottle above your head with your arm straight. Bend at the elbow to lower the bottle towards your shoulder, then straighten again. Repeat 10 times, then swap arms • Standing at a work surface put your hands palm-down on it for support, raise one leg out to the side and lower it again. Repeat 10 times, then switch legs. This will help tone your buttock muscles • When you’re sitting down, march on the spot for 2-3 minutes. Do this as many times as you can throughout the day to burn calories and maintain good circulation in your lower limbs. This can be done on the sofa, at the dinner table, on the bus • Reach over your head, bending to the side at your waist and then straighten up. Swap sides and repeat 10 times Now you know how to safely add some extra, easy exercise into your day you can choose what works best for you and increase your activity levels significantly to help improve your health. Get into the habit now and you’ll find exercising easier over time. If you are worried about starting exercise book an appointment with one of our Physiotherapists - they can check you out and advise you on the best form of exercise for you.
