ebden Bridge & District Ladies Circle is on the lookout for new members. It is quite possibly something you have never heard of so we have found out more.
The first Ladies Circle was set up in 1932 as a group for the wives of members of the Round Table and had similar aims and values; a way for young women to connect, have a great time and put something back into their community through charity fund raising. It is open to all ladies aged between 18 and 45 and is now a modern, vibrant club with many groups all around the country, our local group being based in Hebden Bridge.
Alison Edge, a local member, told us why she joined and what she gets out of it. “I moved from Bradford to Todmorden 6 years ago when my children were just 1 & 3. I was working full time, commuting to Bradford and, other than speaking to a few Mums at nursery drop off and pick up, I didn’t know anyone in the local area. “Then one of the Mums asked me if I wanted to go on a tour of Holmfirth Vineyard. It didn’t take me long to say yes! There were about 15 other women on the tour and they were all really friendly. We had a great night, even

though it was tipping it down! “I didn’t know it at the time but these lovely ladies belonged to Hebden Bridge & District Ladies Circle, a group that I had never previously heard of. I went out with the ‘Circlers’ again and continued to have fun and then joined myself. So far this year we’ve had a Greek night, had a laugh attempting to play badminton, got all dolled up for a posh frocks & prosecco night, fried our own fish supper - and that’s just the highlights! “Not only have I made lifelong friends through Circle but I’ve been able to be part of a group that raises money for local and national charities. This year our charity is The Alzheimer’s Society.” The group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, in various locations around the area.

support for young crime victims
oung victims of crime in Calderdale now have a new service offering support and advice.
A pilot project called Step Forward has been set up to support young victims of any crime. The service is run by Calderdale Council’s Youth Offending Team with funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner. Step Forward will help young victims with advice and also signpost any relevant help. The project is led by a co-ordinator and volunteers, who will also provide mentoring support on a one to one basis. Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Cllr Megan Swift, said: “Being a victim of a crime is

traumatic for anyone, but for young people it can be particularly distressing, with some young victims being unsure where to go for support. “Up until now, there has not been any specific service for young victims in Calderdale. Step Forward will provide a really important service, with our volunteers acting as a stable mentor and supporting young victims through a difficult time.” Young people using the service will have been through differing experiences, so the project is looking to recruit volunteers who are caring, understanding and can spare a couple of hours a week to mentor a young person. Volunteer mentors would be required to meet with victims for an agreed number of sessions. The session
may be supporting a young person to access positive activities, be a listening ear and support to attend any relevant meetings. No formal qualifications are required, but it is necessary that those applying are over the age of 18. They will also need to be reliable, committed and non judgmental. Training will be provided and volunteers will need an Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check- the Council will cover the cost of this. Regular ongoing support will be provided.

easing the move to a new school
todmorden tornadoes
EGIS Martial Arts Academy has been running in Hebden Bridge for over three years. Now, at a time of year when many children have just started a new school, Darren Ogden, the instructor at the Salem Centre school, explains how their programme can help with the transition. “The AEGIS Martial Arts and Leadership Academy aims to help develop the important life skills of focus, concentration, self discipline, listening and confidence, through our structured programmes and work books. These skills will inevitably lead to happier students within the school setting who are more able to reach their full potential. “We also adhere to the key areas of the educational department’s effective learning curriculum so your child is more prepared and can progress further at school.”
The key areas covered are: • Personal, social and emotional development - AEGIS actively teach socialisation. We help your child to engage better with other children of a similar age by discussing basic life skills such as courtesy and respect. This helps your child to appreciate others and consider how their behaviour affects them. • Communication and language - We teach students the importance of good communication, using such techniques as eye contact and positive body language to demonstrate confidence and respect. Also, by engaging our students with questions around their martial arts and life skills, we encourage them to communicate their ideas and thoughts. They also learn better analytical skills by increasing their understanding of the theories underpinning the drills which they do in their lessons. • Physical development - through the training, your child will develop a strong body, heart and inner strength to help them
cope with life’s challenges. It also helps young children to develop physical awareness, balance and co ordination. • Playing and exploring - We encourage a ‘Can Do’ attitude amongst our students. They are encouraged to take on challenges in class and overcome obstacles as part of the programme. This helps develop a confidence to try new things, explore opportunities and overcome obstacles when out of the academy. • Active learning - AEGIS martial arts provides your child with opportunities to advance by actually doing. By learning techniques, then practicing them themselves, they are engaged, both physically and mentally, during the whole process.

o your girls like netball at school and fancy doing more? Or did you used to enjoy it at school and would like to get back into the sport? Well Todmorden Tornadoes might be just what you’re looking for.
Todmorden Tornadoes Netball Team is now entering its fourth year with head coaches Lisa & Ellie Pearson, assisted by Abbie Cowie and Kathryn Dempsey. Lisa and Ellie are mother and daughter who had a passion for netball themselves but also wanted to bring the sport into the community for girls and young women locally. Training is done weekly for girls from year 7 upwards, on a Tuesday at Todmorden Sports Centre. Times depend on age and ability (see diary pages for details). There are currently over 50 local girls registered and regularly attending the sessions.
For older ladies, the club also hosts “Back 2 Netball” sessions, held during the summer months. These are for those who want to return to the sport and, so far, has enabled a further 2 teams to register for the Todmorden Netball League. And for anyone may not be as fit as they once were, “Walking Netball” has recently become more popular. Todmorden Tornadoes are proud to host a walking netball session every week and has regular attendance of players who may not have played since leaving school.

uring a particularly wet half term, I was desperately looking for something or somewhere to take the children. A strict criteria list agreed by all four of us was applied to the selection process. Elements within the venue/activity had to be of interest to all the children at once, that it was under cover, no walking boots were needed (their stipulation) and it had to be extremely competitively priced (my condition).
After much searching on the internet we (to my utter amazement) agreed to spend the afternoon visiting The Imperial War Museum (known as IWM North), based in Manchester at Salford Quays. Opened in 2002, it’s one of five branches of the Imperial War Museum exploring the conflicts on people and society, especially those involving Britain and the Commonwealth; from the First World War to almost the present day. It is the first branch of the Imperial War Museum to be located in the North of England. The Museum occupies a site overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal in Trafford Park; an area, which during the Second World War, was a key industrial centre and consequently heavily bombed during
the Manchester Blitz in 1940. The Lowry Theatre complex is located next to the Museum and the MediaCityUK development is situated opposite, across the water at Salford Quays. It seemed easier to drive there, than get a train and then tram, although there is a Manchester Metrolink station close by. Car parking is limited and there is a charge depending on how long you intend to stay. For up to four hours (the lowest tariff) the cost is £5.00; however entrance to the Museum is free. The main exhibition space is all on one floor, so not the multi-level displays you experience in many other museums. It is a large open plan area divided by huge partitions and the floor is tilted, this all adds to the austere atmosphere. It can appear that each era of war is intermingled with another, but it has been carefully and creatively laid out, so there is logic and an order to it. On entering the Museum there is a Harrier Jump-jet suspended from the ceiling; my seven year old was enthralled by this, as he was when he saw the Russian tank and desert patrol vehicle. There are many interactive displays; but when we went (during a busy wet half term), few were working. There are a number of smaller rooms with exhibits as well, but they didn’t seem to contain much. One of the features of the Museum is that every hour there are film shows about events of war. The lights in the
main area are dimmed and visuals are displayed on the walls. It’s an interesting idea which can engage older children, but can seem scary to younger ones, unless you warn them first this is going to happen! At one end of the main area there is a Special Exhibition Gallery, the subject of which changes on a regular basis. When we went it was Fashion on a Ration, which fascinated my daughter as she insisted on reading the accompanying notes for every exhibit – totally unheard of before. The staff were very knowledgeable, eager to answer questions and very helpful. There is a café offering standard fare, but as always, I took a picnic and we used the designated picnic room. There are plenty of toilet facilities, lockers and baby change rooms; including a children’s activity room where special events are held. To be completely honest, after we had spent maybe an hour and a half there, we used their amenities before walking around The Lowry complex and spotting famous TV logos! Well, I had paid for four hours parking, so it seemed a waste not to. All in all, it was an interesting afternoon with plenty to see and read for the children. It wasn’t a typical ‘old artefacts in glass cases’ sort of place, it was very thought-provoking. So, I’d say an unlikely and surprising ‘win’ all round! By Tracey Sunderland

On this first page we have the Pre-school and Playgroups that run in our area. These usually offer free sessions for children aged 3 and over for 15 hours per week during term time. Contact them directly for more information. The Out of School Clubs listings are for older children who require care outside normal school hours or during holidays. Those
listed take all children, not just those who attend any associated school. The bottom section shows opening times for places you might like to visit regularly with your child. The centre spread is the Pre-school Diary. White background is for drop-in sessions, shaded background is for bookable activities. All sessions will require an adult to remain with the child at all times. Most activities charge a small fee; all Children’s Centre services are free, with any donations gratefully

focus on: Libraries for children
I
n an increasingly digital age, we may view the role of libraries as obsolete, but it is worth looking again. Here, in Calderdale, libraries still see themselves as very much a centre of community and culture, and that includes all children too. Joining the library is free for everyone and, in Calderdale, all under 16s benefit from easy instant joining and no fines. Look further though; there is much more, especially for under 5s. Baby Bounce and Rhyme are fun sessions held at Hebden Bridge Library on Monday mornings 11:00-11:40am (also at King Cross and Brighouse Libraries at other times). The sessions are suitable for all babies and toddlers accompanied by an
adult at all times. The sessions cost £2 or free for Passport to Leisure holders. Bookstart is a national book gifting programme which gives a free pack of books, games and activity ideas to children aged 9 months and again at 36 months. If you haven’t received your packs, contact our Early Years Librarian on 01422 392620. Count Me In 1,2,3 are packs designed to encourage learning about numeracy through picture books. There are three packs available and each contains a book, games and activities which are fun and educational. The packs are available for families to borrow from all Calderdale Libraries Storytots are storytelling sessions specifically for children aged 2-4 years. These activities are usually based on a well loved children’s book
or author and activities include stories and crafts. Storytots take place during school holidays and have a small charge of £2 or £3 per child. Visit the Calderdale library service website for information about where and when the sessions are taking place. Finally, as well as the obvious book loaning and reference sections, don’t forget you can borrow audio CDs and DVD for a small charge (you must be over 18 to borrow CDs and DVDs), read daily newspapers and make free use of computers and the internet (this may need to be booked in advance). For children doing homework projects there is also free photocopying and printing services - ask at the library for more details.

Q I went back to work soon
after my daughter was born and spend almost all day sitting in front of a computer. I now find my back is aching in the evenings and I am worried the problem may get worse as my daughter gets older and heavier. Do you have any advise that might help? A With 15 million people visiting their GP each year and 150 million working days lost each year in the UK due to back pain, getting prompt assessment and effective treatment for the problem is the right course of action. A Physiotherapist carries out a detailed examination in a comfy treatment room,
explains the problem to the patient and puts in place a plan for treatment to achieve a quick resolution of their problem. If needed the Physio can liaise with the GP to arrange investigations, like X-rays, or give advice on modifications to work situations if necessary. Physiotherapists are experts in assessing and treating joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves and use joint mobilisations, manipulation, soft tissue massage, electrotherapy and exercises to decrease pain and improve function. They are also very experienced in problem solving and give advice to stop the problem
They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.
recurring. 31% of computer workers experience back pain each year and people who drive more than 25,000 miles per year are at even higher risk, averaging 22 days off per year with back pain compared with low mileage drivers who average just 3 days off. Poor posture is a major contributory factor but smoking, poor physical fitness, weak trunk muscles, low
job satisfaction, personal problems, depressive symptoms and previous back pain all increase your risk. Lynne Midwinter MCSP, Physio & Therapies Ltd
The following are all things you can consider to help you cut down your risk of back pain:D Watch your posture! It’s easy to slouch at your desk but this puts pressure on the discs and ligaments in your back. Try to sit up tall from your bottom with a shallow curve in your low back. Relax your shoulders, lengthen your neck and make a slight double chin to stop neck strain and headaches. D Never balance your phone between your shoulder and your ear. This compresses the neck joints and tenses the muscles. If you use the phone regularly ask for a headset. D Regularly review your desk set-up. Your screen should be directly in front of you and at the right height so you can maintain a good posture. Reams of paper or old phone directories are excellent to put under your monitor to raise it to the right height. D Stand up regularly. This relieves the pressure on the discs in your back and improves your circulation which brings oxygen and nutrients to the joints, muscle and ligaments.
D Walk over to speak to your colleague instead of sending yet another email – this is good for your back and research has shown that mini breaks like this actually improve productivity! D Drink 2 litres of water a day. Tea and coffee do NOT count unless they are herbal or decaf! Once you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated and this affects your muscles, ligaments and discs. D Go out for a walk at lunchtime. This will help your circulation, burn calories and improve your fitness. Encourage a colleague to go with you – it’s much more fun with two! D Make time for sport or activity in the evenings. The last thing your back wants to do after sitting all day is to slouch on the sofa all evening! D If you do get pain don’t ignore it! Visit a Chartered Physiotherapist for an examination and advice. Most problems are easily solved with expert help!
