Activities & Shows At Square Chapel

o your children have dreams of forming a rock band? Did you know they could move one step closer to that dream by heading along to the Rock School at The Orange Box young people’s centre in Halifax on a Monday evening?

Above - Georgia is a Rock School pro!

S

Michaela from the Square Chapel Arts Centre told us more; “The Orange Box is a partner venue to the Square Chapel in Halifax. The Rock School is for young people aged 11 – 16yrs and takes place in the state-of-the-art rehearsal rooms at the centre. The sessions are suitable for beginners and those with some experience, acoustic strummers and all out rockers. It’s a great place to learn to play your instrument better, meet other musicians, form a band, write songs. Opportunities to rehearse, collaborate, perform and record are all included in this popular project.” For younger children, Square Chapel also run two Youth Theatre classes on a Saturday morning; one for 5 to 7 year olds and one for 8 to 12s. These introduce children to the magic of theatre in professional theatre spaces, focussing on building confidence and social interaction whilst developing skills in these fun and creative sessions. Square Chapel is a performing arts venue in the heart of Halifax, opposite the railway station and adjacent to the Piece Hall. It offers a seasonal programme of theatre, music, dance, comedy and film,

with beautiful facilities and an accessible and atmospheric café bar. There is a regular programme of family shows, with some exciting ones coming up this autumn, including: • Terry Deary presenting some of the stories from his Horrible Histories books • Nick Sharratt (illustrator of Shark in the Park, Tracey Beaker and many more) with a fantastic Draw-Along event • Sealegs Puppet Theatre with Little Bo Peep, • Tall Stories with The Snail and the Whale • Plus two lovely shows for Christmas. Look out for more details later. The centre also programme a range of shows especially for schools and are offering 6 performances of The Nutcracker by Story Pocket Theatre in the run up to Christmas. This beautiful adaptation of a classic tale is a perfect winter treat for schools. To enquire about places in the Rock School or Youth Theatre in the autumn term or to find out more about our schools and family shows, please visit the website at www.squarechapel.co.uk

Know your School Nurses

ince 2015 The School Nursing Service in Calderdale has been provided by Locala. They take over from the health visitor when your child starts school and they aim to promote and support the well-being of all school age children, both in schools and in the wider community, until the age of 19.

Every school in Calderdale can access the school nursing team for advice on health issues. Children can be referred by school staff, parents, doctors or even other pupils. Since Locala took over, the emphasis of the School Nursing Team has shifted. They no longer carry out the hearing tests, immunisations, the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) or the sex and relationship education within the classrooms (these functions have been transferred to another service) they now focus on: • Support for children with long term and short term conditions, including eczema, epilepsy, asthma and diabetes. • Support for children and families with special needs and complex medical needs. • Advice with emotional and behavioural concerns. • Guidance on continence issues. • Nutritional/dietary advice. • Advise on referrals to specialist services. • Signposting to partner agencies. • Promoting best practice in asthma care and providing training to schools.

Promotion of healthy lifestyle options to individuals, families and communities. • Focuses on safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people The team supports children, young people and their parents/carers either by telephone, social media or by visiting them in school or at home. The Calderdale School Nursing team can be contacted on 030 3330 9974. There is a member of the team available Monday to Friday between 9am-5pm who will be happy to help you in any way possible. If you leave your contact details and availability with the administration team on this number a member of the team will return your call. Useful information can also be accessed through the Facebook and Twitter accounts and the website also has lots of really good advice on a variety of issues. The website is also where you can make an online referral direct into the service. Website - www.locala.org.uk Facebook - Locala School Nurses Calderdale Twitter - Locala Calderdale School Nurses •

Scout Road Pilots Flood Prevention Project

t the end of the Summer term this year, student ambassadors at Mytholmroyd’s Scout Road Academy welcomed local MP Mr Craig Whittaker to see the pioneering grass-roots flood prevention work being undertaken at the school by Yorkshire Water and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust as part of the Soak It Up project.

Photo: Scout Road Academy pupils introduce local MP Craig Whittaker to the Soak It Up project. In the background, work to restore the land affected by the Boxing Day 2015 landslip is nearing completion. Left to right: Mrs Anne Stamp, Principal of Scout Road Academy; student ambassadors, Laila and Lizzie (Year 3) and Zac and Marlow (Year 4); Mr Craig Whittaker, Member of Parliament for Calder Valley.

First, four students from Years 3 and 4 briefed the Member of Parliament for Calder Valley on the practical tips they have learned on how to use swales (manmade channels) and water-loving planting in their own gardens at home to deal with heavy rainwater in a special meeting in the Principal’s office. Next they took him on a tour of the school playing field to see volunteers from Yorkshire Water and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust working together to put these ideas into practice in a special day of action to prevent future flood risk. Anne Stamp, Principal at Scout Road Academy, said: “We’re very grateful to the project leaders and volunteers from Yorkshire Water and the Wildlife Trust for their hard work on site today to improve and safeguard the school’s environment, as well as the valuable workshops which have already equipped the pupils with tips to help their families manage heavy rainfall in their own driveways and gardens. Our student ambassadors enjoyed the chance to meet their local MP today and were very impressed with how much he knows about ponds and flood prevention! “We’re very pleased to have been chosen to be part of the pilot scheme. Small grass-roots projects like this can have a big impact on flood prevention as well as the major rebuilding projects, and every parent knows it’s often the ideas children bring back from school or other activities which can be the start. “Scout Road pupils have had to be more resilient than most in dealing with the consequences of the flooding – I’m delighted that now it’s their turn to play a part in building a safer future.”

New Gracie Jiu-Jitsu courses

A

EGIS Martial Arts and Leadership academy in Hebden Bridge are pleased to announce that their instructor, Darren, has recently qualified as a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor, meaning they can expand the services offered at the academy. Currently they are running two new programmes - Junior Grapplers, for ages 8-14 yrs. and Gracie Combatives, suitable for 15yrs and above. Tracey from AEGIS told us more about what Gracie Jiu-Jitsu actually is. “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is designed to give a smaller, weaker person a real chance to defend themselves against a much stronger, more athletic opponent. It helps you to develop in body, mind and spirit and provides you with life skills applicable both on and off the mat, focussing mainly on technique, timing and thought. Learning the technique develops a mind-set whereby you have to tactically think about your next move. It is non-competitive. “Our Gracie Combatives course is designed for people from 15 yrs onwards but the course AEGIS are running for younger children, Junior Grapplers, is part of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Bullyproof program; incorporating the 3 Ts; Talk, Tell, Tackle, and the 5 rules of engagement. The program is specifically designed to enable youngsters to deal with any type of bullying in a safe and controlled manner, without a punch ever being thrown.” For more information on the courses please visit Gracieuniversity.com or, if you would like to give it a go, email caldervalley@ aegismartialarts.co.uk or call 07903706784. AEGIS are currently offering a FREE 10 day trial of the new courses, including uniform.

A Cinema For Everyone

I

t’s always worth keeping an eye on what’s happening at Hebden Bridge Picture House. This thriving, independent, not-for-profit cinema operated by Hebden Royd Town Council has screening of the latest films every evening, plus family matinees every weekend and during the school holidays, but there is so much more to enjoy.

Did you know that there is a special Cinema Savings Club for children aged 12 to 18? Next time you take your teen to the cinema ask for a membership card and they get £1 off entrance for every future film they go to see. They will also be signed up to the “Secret Cinema”, a special screening just for club members, and they even get to vote on which film they would like to see. Entry to the Secret Cinema is just £3 plus special offers at the food kiosk. For parents with tiny children, don’t forget about the ‘Parent and Baby’ screenings. These are specifically for parents with babies under 12 months old. They run once a month and in a relaxed and comfortable environment , with the lights turned up a little and the sound turned down a notch so parents can enjoy a trip to the cinema, including caring for and feeding their baby, without the usual stresses and concerns about disturbing others. The films will either be U, PG or 12A certificated. Also, for people with Autism and other

sensory issues, look out for the Autism Friendly screenings. Again the lights are left on low during the film, the sound it turned down a little, there are no trailers or music before the film starts, you can bring your own food and carers with CAE cards get in for free. Of course other family members will be made very welcome too so everyone can enjoy the film. You may also be interested in the Dementia Friendly screenings, usually on occasional Saturday mornings, plus other accessible screenings. Hebden Bridge Picture House is a cash only venue, so entry to films is paid on the door. The doors open 45 minutes prior to a film start time. Pre-booking is only available, and very much recommended, for our Live Arts and Special Events, where our doors open 1 hour before the main event start time. For more information and listings on up and coming films, go to www. hebdenbridgepicturehouse.co.uk

T

he first Todmorden Book Festival (16-24 November 2018) will provide a vibrant programme of reading, writing and book-related events that celebrate the written word and stimulate, inspire and challenge audiences. The festival programme will showcase the work of new and established writers from across the region and the UK, with fiction, non-fiction and poetry events for adults, young adults and children.

Organisers are delighted that poet and writer Andrew McMillan has agreed to become its first patron. South Yorkshireborn, Manchester-based Andrew said: “I’m delighted to be joining Todmorden Book Festival as patron. A book festival that sits, as Todmorden does, on the borderlands between counties, between rural and urban, between the landscape and city, feels like a thrilling and vital thing.” Involving Team Tod, Todmorden Information Centre and Calderdale Libraries representatives, the organising committee also includes volunteers experienced in organising book festivals elsewhere in the country.

The full programme of events will be announced in September but tickets for the following events are already on sale and going fast: Saturday 17th Nov, 2.30pm at Central Methodist Church, Todmorden This year marks the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote and Todmorden Book Festival 2018 will host Helen Pankhurst, (far left) the great-granddaughter of suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst and leading women’s rights campaigner at this year’s Festival. Her new book “Deeds Not Words, the Story of Women’s Rights, Then and Now”, which was published earlier this year, charts how women’s lives have changed over the last century, with the voices of both pioneers and ordinary women. Friday 23rd Nov, 7.30pm at Todmorden Hippodrome Critically acclaimed Writer and Director Sally Wainwright (left) will talk about a writing career spanning over 25 years. The BAFTA winner’s many credits include “Happy Valley”, “Last Tango in Halifax” and the new drama, currently being filmed at Shibden Hall, “Gentleman Jack”. Tickets for these and other events are available from Todmorden Information Centre on 01706 818181 or visit www. todmordenbookfestival.co.uk

Parents Group

here comes a time when you are looking for a destination for a family outing which is a bit more than a playground, albeit one might be nearby. Dare I say it, a place that might interest you on the way to the playground! Then a visit to Samlesbury Hall, near Preston, may fit the bill! This is a beautiful, small Tudor manor house built in the fourteenth century set in charming spacious grounds.

Groups are informal and relaxed, but each different, as they are shaped by the people who attend. In some groups the emphasis is on discussing personal experience, in others it might be that people are interested in exploring issues such as mindfulness, self-esteem, relaxation, creativity. All the groups are led by a facilitator or co-facilitators, whose role is to encourage the group to develop in a safe, nonjudgemental and inclusive way. All our support groups are peer support groups. This means people get help from each other rather than an expert. All our groups are free.

Page Out &Header About

Samlesbury Hall

The first hall was built by the D’Ewyas family and was situated on the banks of the River Ribble. It was destroyed during The Great Raid of 1322 by Scots after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Then in the early 1320s Gilbert de Southworth married Alice D’Ewyas and built the Great Hall, which is now the oldest part of the existing building. Samlesbury Hall is administered by a registered charitable trust, whose aim is to preserve the Hall for the people of the area and visitors to Lancashire. The Trust was founded in the 1920s when the Hall was about to be demolished and now attracts more than 50,000 visitors each year. The Hall is a very enjoyable place to visit, with free admission and has lots to see. Although it’s worth noting that it is closed every Saturday and occasionally on Fridays due to being a popular wedding venue. So it’s best to check on their website for opening times before you travel (as I should have done the first time I tried to visit). Without this stream of income the Hall would definitely have to permanently close its doors. Samlesbury Hall has many different rooms to wander around and a free map that can be picked up at the Reception desk (through the

entrance doors) which is really useful. The rooms are cleverly furnished and can help young minds imagine the way of life in long ago times, including a Victorian school room and kitchen. There are Guides are in and around the Hall who are very knowledgeable and helpful. The Hall also hosts outdoor theatre shows, concerts and history re-enactments. It has a very nice, if rather on the expensive side, restaurant-café. Coffee and cakes are available in a lounge area of the Hall. Again, it’s worth noting that picnics are not allowed, the charity relies on the money made from the food sold. However, sitting in the quaint courtyard whilst eating our refreshments was really rather pleasant. During the school holidays there are lots family friendly activities arranged, including free tours with Witch Janey, King Henry VIII and Spooky Simon! When we visited there was a treasure trail to follow around the Hall which the children really enjoyed, it was a great way of encouraging them, and allowing me, to stop and look properly around the rooms rather than dashing in and out as children tend to do. The Hall itself is just about manageable with a pram but, as you would expect with

an older building, some areas are not fully accessible on wheels. The website is well worth a look and is very informative with regards to scheduled events and activities programme. There is ample free car parking and the Hall itself is very easy to find. Opening hours are Sunday to Friday 11.00 – 4.00. It is a small but very pretty Manor house steeped in history, with lots of additional attractions such as the Bee Heritage Centre. There are delicious ice-creams and milkshakes available and it has a quality, and all-important playground nearby. So fair’s fair I’d say. By Julia Boon and Tracey Sunderland

The centre spread is the Pre-school Diary. White background is for dropin sessions, shaded background is for bookable activities. All sessions will require an adult to remain with the child at all times. Most activities charge a small fee; all Children’s Centre services are free, with any donations gratefully received. Please

ave you all had a wonderful Summer? Enjoyed the exceptional weather we had? Enjoyed the relaxed routines of the school holidays? Kids lying in in the mornings until sufficient sleep has been amassed and grumpy tempers have diminished? Then suddenly you are back in the thick of the morning school routine.

Being Mum By Josie Pritchard

A recent study has found that getting back into the morning routine after the school holidays is one of the most stressful things about parenting. Most humans actually like routine and all parenting books tell you to get your children into a routine of sleeping, feeding, playing, etc, from a very early age. So why is it so difficult to get things going again after a break? Well simply it’s because you are changing the routine, from holiday mode to school mode, and it’s the change that causes the problem. So here are some sage-like tips from other parents, to help make your life a little easier. Sleep In order to have a pleasant morning you need to have children who are fully rested so get your bedtime routine in order. The recommended sleep time for a school age child is between 9 and 11 hours. An average person takes an hour from fully awake to fully asleep, so make your child’s bedtime routine about an hour long and you should be able to take your child from wide awake to fast asleep. Alarm clocks Get everyone an alarm clock so you don’t have to do the waking them up bit. Set your own for 15 minutes earlier than the kids so you can have some me-time and get yourself organised before the rush starts.

Visual reminders As you will know, kids can get sidetracked. So make a visual list, using clip art or something, of all the jobs to do in the morning: brush teeth, brush hair, pack lunch, put on socks, etc. Pin it up where everyone can see it so only occasional, gentle reminders should be required. Watch the clock An obvious one is try not to rush. Rushing is stressful for both adults and kids. Remember children don’t have a well developed sense of the passage of time, so try and find things that can help them to see how well they are staying on track. There are apps you can download that can help with this. Happy Kids Timer comes highly recommended and Mouse Timer is completely visual so works for very small children. Or you could try making a morning playlist - one favourite song for each task, and everyone is happy. I always liked the radio in the morning and the kids soon learned that hair was brushed during the chatty bit and we had to leave the house soon after the news. Ban screen time It is just a thief of time! For both kids and grown ups. Leave your own Facebook checking until after the school run and keep the kids screens out of reach until after school.

Packed lunches Making the lunches must be one of the most time consuming jobs in a morning. Top tips to make it easier include: • Make sandwiches at the weekend and freeze in daily bundles. You can pop them straight from the freezer into the lunch boxes and they will be defrosted by lunchtime. • Sliced carrot, grapes, raisins etc will keep fresh in small plastic containers with tight lids, so can be prepped well in advance. Even a sliced apple can be kept fresh overnight by putting it back together and holding it with an elastic band. • Buy two lunch boxes per child so you can wash and prep one during the day while the other is being used. Also, it’s not the end of the world if one gets left at school. Hallway space If you have the space, get your hallway organised. Set up every child with their own coat hook and basket and get them into the habit of putting their own stuff on their own peg and their shoes, hat, gloves, scarf etc. in their basket. This should make the final stages of getting ready to go out of the door in the morning a breeze, as everything will be where it lives. Also, get a big packet of baby wipes to keep by the door for those last minute wipe-downs before they face the world.

Young Fundraisers

O

vergate Hospice provide specialist end of life care, completely free of charge, to adults across Calderdale; in addition to supporting our patient’s friends and families. Since opening their doors in 1981 they have cared for over 7,000 patients and supported their loved ones. It currently costs £3.5 million per year to keep the Hospice open and it is largely due to the fundraising efforts that they are able to achieve this.

For Overgate Hospice

Young Fundraisers is an initiative set up by the hospice to educate children and young adults about the care that Overgate provides to the local community and encourage them to get involved with raising the vital funds required to continue this provision of care. There is an online pack available on the Overgate website (search for ‘young fundraisers’), aimed at any educational setting or youth group, full of ideas, information and tips, to help young people get involved. Alongside the pack there is also a community fundraiser on hand to support any fundraising, attend any events and/or visit to provide a talk or assembly, in an age appropriate way, to further explain how important the work of Overgate is to our local community. Small groups are also welcome to visit the Hospice for a tour and talk. Nikki Scholey from Overgate Hospice told us: “Taking part in one of Overgate Hospice’s fundraising campaigns or putting on your own fundraising challenge will help students to develop new skills in a variety of different areas such as communication, team work, negotiation, business planning, networking, confidence, time management and many more. It’s also really fun!”

New for 2018, Overgate Hospice are delighted to announce their new Young Fundraisers Award for schools, youth groups and young people’s organisations. Many young people and schools already raise money for Overgate Hospice but, from 2018, to say thank you properly they are setting up the Young Fundraisers Award to show appreciation to the organisations and individuals who go above and beyond for Overgate. To get one of the awards you’ll need to raise over £150. You can the raise money in any way you choose, such as a one off charity event or smaller activities throughout the year. There are four different awards you can get based on how much you raise. These are: Bronze – Raise £150+ Silver – Raise £300+ Gold - Raise £500+ Diamond - Raise £1000+ At the end of the school year you will be presented with your award at a special ceremony. There’ll also be spot prizes available for schools and groups who’ve had the most creative fundraising ideas. Older children might also be interested in the “You’re Hired” campaign. How much can you make from £10? Test your problem solving, business and budgeting skills. Prizes will be awarded for most creative idea, most money raised, best team work. It’s never too early to plan for Christmas. This year Overgate will be organising bag packs at supermarkets running up to the festive period. Where possible they’d like to invite school choirs to attend and entertain shoppers and staff. If your school has a choir and would like to join in with a bag pack please get in touch with the Hospice. They also love to be involved at any Christmas Fairs you’re arranging. If there’s any opportunities that they can bring a stall or game to your Christmas fair, or even for their mascot Harold the Hospice Hare to attend please them us know.

If you want to get involved or know more, you can contact the hospice via; fundraising@overgatehospice.nhs.uk 01422 387121

Bloke in a Kitchen

Potato and Cauliflower Curry By Richard Dalby

T

his tasty, healthy curry is quick and easy to prepare for a weekday family meal. I took this recipe from the award winning Prashad’s cookbook and, over time, I’ve made some improvements here and there. I’ve found that making the main part of the curry in advance, then roasting the cauliflower separately, gives fantastic results. If you don’t have a blender to make the masala paste, don’t worry; just chop those ingredients as finely as possible. It’ll be every bit as good. This is a great way to introduce beautiful, spicy flavours to children using less or more chilli as required.

Ingredients • • • •

• • • • • • • • • • • •

Masala Paste 2 fresh green chillies 3 cloves of garlic 4 cm root of fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped. Pinch of salt Potato Curry 8 new potatoes – cut into bitesize chunks 1 large cauliflower – cut into florets 50ml vegetable or sunflower oil 1½ teaspoons cumin seeds ¼ teaspoon asafetida (optional) 1½ teaspoons tumeric 3 teaspoons ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon chilli powder 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes ½ teaspoon salt Big bunch of fresh coriander, finely chopped

Method •

21

To make the masala, blitz the chillies, garlic, ginger and a pinch of salt in a blender to form a fine paste. Heat the oil in a large pan over a medium heat for 30 seconds. Tip in the cumin seeds and, as soon as they start to brown, stir in the asafetida and reduce the heat to low. Add the potatoes and stir until so they are coated in the oil and seeds. Increase the heat to medium and cover, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are slightly brown and just tender. Reduce the heat and stir in the masala paste, all the spices, the salt and the tinned tomatoes. Simmer gently for 5-10 minutes until the potatoes are cooked nicely. Add the chopped coriander and mix well in. To roast the cauliflower, place the florets in a large baking dish, adding enough oil to lightly coat them. Throw in a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Mix it all up and roast for 20 minutes at 200c/180c fan/gas mark 6. Once the cauliflower is cooked through and nicely tender, gently reheat your potato curry and serve. Lovely with rice or homemade naan bread.

M

y 12 year old daughter has been suffering with pain in her knees for a few months now. It is so bad she has had to give up sports and sometimes struggles to walk. Her Doctor and Consultant diagnosed Chondromalacia Patellae but can only suggested pain meds. Is there more we can do?

C

hildren and eye tests have made the news recently with research showing that a quarter of school age children had never had an eye test. As a parent of a child with amblyopia (lazy eye) I would like to urge all parents to get their children checked as early as possible. After all, it’s free and can save you and your child from more complex problems later.

Chondromalacia Patella is sometimes called ‘runner’s knee’ and is common in young people and adolescents, especially girls. It occurs when the cartilage that lines the back of the knee cap (Patella) wears and becomes softer than it should be. There is often creaking or grinding feeling in the knee when you move and is thought to be caused by repeated activities like sports, or by injury causing poor tracking of the knee in the groove on the thigh bone. However, one of the most common things I hear from young to middle aged women is that their knee pains started when they were young teenagers and it has bothered them constantly if they have tried anything active since. When questioned further I often find that these ladies have gone through a sudden growth spurt when younger. When children grow rapidly, the bones grow much faster than the muscles, ligament and tendons. This results in muscles suddenly becoming quite tight. The limbs are also rapidly lengthening and getting proportionally heavier so the power in the muscles also goes down. When I treat young people with ‘runner’s knee’ I can usually see the feet are tilting inwards, which causes the heels and shin bones to twist, which pulls the knee out of alignment. Achilles tendons

are usually quite tight too meaning the foot doesn’t flex properly during walking, meaning the heels don’t hit the ground first, as they should. However the main problem is that the muscles that control the ability to stand and walk, and control the arches of the feet, are very weak. In girls, these growth spurts are often accompanied by the widening of the pelvis, meaning the knee join it being attached from both sides. Some simple, focused physio exercises to help stretch and strengthen the affected muscles and maybe some shoe inserts to address the foot issues, will help a lot. As the pain subsides further exercises to help with core muscle strength and gait issues should have your daughter back up and running again, pain free, within months. If you or anyone you know is struggling with knee pain, physiotherapy should be considered. 90% of knee problems can be improved or completely resolved by the right rehab. If you or your children have been told ‘you will grow out of it’ you could be leaving yourself or your children open to years of pain such as back pain or leave them needing knee or hip replacements in her later life. This can be avoided with the correct physiotherapy as soon as possible. Kerensa Mckie MCSP, HCPC

Amblyopia is a condition where the two eyes are mismatched. One is often fairly good and doesn’t need correction but the other can be either extremely long or short sighted, have a squint or even a childhood cataract. The growing brain will begin to rely on the good eye and, if not corrected by around age 6, will never develop a strong link with the weaker eye. In the case of a squint, or even a cataract, you may be able to see that something is wrong with your child’s eyes. However, in the case of reflective problems (long or short sightedness and astigmatism), as was the case with our daughter, there are very few symptoms. Since the child can see perfectly well through one eye they will often not know themselves that anything is wrong. We only picked up our daughter’s problem by chance, when I had no childcare and had to take her to the optician with me.

She was three years old and, of course, couldn’t read letters on the board; but there are other tests they can do - matching shapes, etc. Her problem became obvious as soon as they covered her good eye and she was prescribed glasses with one strong lens, for full-time wear (two pairs, completely free). Fortunately, we caught it early enough so she didn’t need to wear patches or use drops at all. Now she is older and past the critical age for brain development, she often goes without her glasses with no problems; but at least we know both of her eyes still work. The NHS recommends children are screened when they turn four as it becomes harder to treat successfully after the age of six. Screening will not happen automatically at this age. Just pop in to your local opticians when next passing and make an appointment. Hazel Bregazzi
