CLUB NEWS Quiz Winner After a very difficult quiz, put on by Peter Hampson, this year’s winner was George Coles.

Emailing the Journal If I don’t already have it, please could you let me have you email address so I can send journals out electronically. This saves the club a considerable sum in printing, not to mention the paper and postage! Thanks.

Membership Secretary Richard Fiarhurst has been doing this job for some time now. However, he would very much like to pass it on to someone with more time if possible. If you can help please contact Richard or let us know at the AGM. Thanks

Last Drop Steam Party The Last Drop Village in Bromley Cross, Bolton are hosting their first Steam fair Weekend on the Sunday and Monday of the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, that’s the 6th and 7th May 2012. If you wuld like to support this event by taking an exhibit, please contact John on 01204 5935289 or Kerian on 07889 184281

Front Cover The Front Cover Picture was the winner of this year’s photographic competition. It was taken by Frances Carney on the Furka railway in Switzerland, which is situated near the Rhone glacier. This loco is designed for use on a rack railway. It has a separate two cylinder engine, between the frames, driving the rack & pinion through gearing which can be put out of action when on a non rack section. When in use on a rack, the rack engine exhausts through the main engine cylinders, there by making the loco into a compound. All this arrangement is controlled from the cab by specially designed control levers.

Subs Just a quick reminder, subs become due at the AGM. If you can’t make it to that meeting please contact Richard to ensure your membership remains current.

Picture right: With the aid of trusty assistant Dave Bretnall, Richard Fairhurst’s Fowler Roller No.16436 is nearing the end of a lengthy four-year overhaul. Work included new firebox plus other remidial boiler work.

ENGINE NOTES By George Coles

Well, Boxing Day has come and gone and my engine is now tucked up for the winter. I feared I might be the only engine turning out this year, but I was delighted to find that I was joined by four other engines. The best turn out of steam engines for several years. Long may it continue! The Last Drop at Bolton is promoting a small steam event over the May Day weekend, on 5th and 6th May. A number of engine owners have been invited, including myself, and I intend to participate if I can. A new, early-season event is quite welcome following the demise of May Day Steam. The N.T.E.T. AGM seems to have been a very controversial affair, with

a motion proposed by Derek Rayner being highly critical of the Officers and Council of the N.T.E.T., over the publication of Michael Lane’s book on Aveling and Porter. I have not seen this book myself, yet, but I gather that it has 350 typographical errors as well as historical inaccuracies. Although the motion was not passed it created much ill feeling and resulted in Derek Raynor resigning from all his posts in the NTET. This is very sad as Derek has made a substantial contribution to steaming over the years and will be very much missed. I understand that the book is to be reprinted later this year and I think I will wait until then before purchasing my copy.

Any Other Business: Recovery of trophies presented at 2010 MDS was discussed. Nothing was decided. The future of club rallies was also discussed. It was decided we could offer expertise to any other organisation willing to put on a rally, but we did not have enough man power to do it ourselves This was proposed by Mr R Mawdsley, all were in favour. We could also offer engines and a club stand at an event. The club trip will be on 17/9/11 to the WHR. Refreshments will be served at future AGM’s. This year we decided that, after the price paid for last year’s Hot Pot, it was too expensive.
