NEWS Celebration Weekend

2013 sees the Centenary or not only George’s Clayton ‘Lucy Ashton’ but also Alan Porter’s Burrell ‘Old Ernie’ and Steam Tug ‘Kerne’. It is hoped there will be a number of events over the course of the year to mark these milestones, but the first will be a celebration weekend on 18th and 19th of May, at the Leigh Arms, Little Leigh. Kerne will be on the water, the two engines will be at the pub, plus a few invited guests and anyone else who fancies it. Very much like the end of season do in October, all comers with any interesting exhibit, will be welcome. Get your insurance tickets in order and come and join the party!

Club Trip

At present we have just nine tickets remaining for the re-booked club trip along the Manchester Ship Canal on Saturday 27th April. Free to members, all others £32. Please contact Hazel to book (01706 819426). NB. Membership subs for 2013 becomes due at the AGM. To ensure your trip ticket is free please pay your subs at the meeting, or soon afterwards.

Held on the May Queen field in Lymm, over 300 vehicles are expected to attend, plus other attractions including Model railway layouts, and activities on the canal. If you would like to get involved as an exhibitor, booking are being taken now. Visit the website www.lymmtransport.org. uk for more information or phone Alan Williams on 01925 754080

Steam Apprentices

Further to one of the discussions at the AGM last year, the committee have contacted the Steam Apprentice Club with a view to running some events in our region. No plans have been drawn up yet but, if any or our members are interested in supporting this initiative with either steam engines, offers of venues or just your time, please contact any member of the committee. Hopefully we will know more by the AGM.

engine notes By George Coles The 34th annual Tom Barlow Boxing Day Run turned out to be a successful event this year with a good turn out of engines. It was fine and not too cold in the morning but the weather deteriorated as the day went on. While we were steaming up my Clayton in the farmyard an engine went by in the road which we were unable to identify. On arrival at The Jolly Thresher we realised that the engine was Fowler Showmans No. 15375 ‘Supremacy’ but without canopy or dynamo bracket. It was amazing how different this locomotive appears in road loco form. I understand that it will remain like this throughout 2013, before having a new smokebox fitted next winter.

Amongst the other exhibits was the Ex. Barlow brothers 1910 Foster ‘Winnie’. Owned by Frank Lythgoe of Warburton, exhibited by Phil Moston and the 1894, 5NHP Wallis and Steevens Traction Engine is owned by Nick Parker and regularly crewed by Sam Bozson. The following day we steamed the Clayton the 17 miles back to the crane yard where it is now in winter hibernation, until the weather improves/. I will then be smartening it up for its centenary year. I will also be having a look at the valve and valve rods as it is sounding a little ‘hoarse’ at the moment. Perhaps I had better clean out the exhaust pipe as well, as I haven’t done it for a while.

NEWS FROM THE SOUTH By Tony Seddon Shredded rubbers can be a hazard when you’re doing a 30 miles, or so trip from Shrewsbury to Malpas. This happened to me, on my Aveling & Porter No.8401 so work has now started on re-rubbering. I will be plating over the strakes then vulcanising the rubber onto the wheels. Re-paining the wheels will then be necessary!

Other work is also progressing on my other engine, Aveling & Porter No.10906 ‘Cinderella’. The new box and tubeplate with all riveting and stays are complete. Heads are being put onto the stay tubes now. It is hoped that water will be boiled very soon, the first time since 1988. (I have heard Tony suggest the 35th Boxing Day Run might be a good target to aim for. It’s in print now Tony, so everyone knows.)
