NEWS We have had a number of people contact us over the winter with a view to attracting exhibitors to new events being run in the region. Following are the messages we have received. If you are interested in attending an event please get in touch with the organisers directly. Dear Sir/Madame As huge fans ourselves last summer we welcomed more than 300 classic cars and vintage vehicles to the first ever Oswestry Vintage and Classic Transport rally. The event was an astounding success with motorbikes, pump engines and tractors arriving to delight our visitors, not to mention the array of beautifully classical cars that were on display. We kicked things up another gear by treating fellow enthusiasts, visitors and families who joined us to free falconry displays, archery as well as our interactive forge and iron safari. Exhibitors were also well taken care of with complimentary food and drink vouchers redeemable in our own, onsite café, allowing them to sample our freshly prepared sandwiches, pitta breads, salads and wraps. As the event was such a success and enjoyed by all including the Centre staff, preparation are already underway for our 2016 transport rally which promises to be even bigger and better than ever. If you would be interested in exhibiting your vintage vehicle during next years celebration of classic motors we would love to hear from you! Our Vintage rally is Saturday July 16th 2016. engine notes By George Coles I was pleased to see that, despite the poor weather, two full sized engines and one 6” scale engine turned out on Boxing Day to maintain the tradition of the Tom Barlow Run. The new landlord at the Jolly Thresher made the engines welcome this year so they were able to complete the full three pub run. Chris Adamson from Heatley, near Lymm, brought his Aveling Traction and Sam Bozson brought his Fowler Roller from Warburton. I was please to see that Sam’s Great Grandmother, our President, Betty Fitter was supporting him at all the pubs. Jack Dibnah was in charge of Alan Atkinson’s half size Atkinson steam wagon, having driven it on the road half way across Cheshire to get there! Will Dakin also tried to support the event but was disappointed not to be able to make it. In the morning he lit up his Davey
Paxman Traction Engine while it was on his low-loader, inside his ‘Toy Box’. After it had got steam on, one of the mud hole doors blew out its joint. Throwing out the fire, while the engine was inside the Toy Box proved to be quite a tricky job. Alan Porter tells me that, following the Acton Bridge Steam party, his roller was quickly stripped down, inspected and then re-tubed by Brian Allison. An Hydraulic test followed and his engine was ready for action again before Christmas. My own engine is on a 10 year boiler test this winter season but my progress is slow by comparison. The weather is always too cold or too wet. The wind has brought my sheet to the end of its useful life and it is being replaced by a new one, at £175 from GC Tarpaulins of Chadderton. This is the first one that they have made for me.

Bill briggs By Alan Porter Engine owners and their crews, enthusiasts and anyone involved in the preservation of road steam vehicles in the North West of England were both saddened and shocked to learn of the passing, at the age of 80, of Bill Briggs. His unexpected death occurred on 11th January after a short illness in Nobles Hospital, Douglas, Isle of Man. He had retired to the island during 2004 but prior to this had lived in a delightful cottage in Mobberley, Cheshire for 39 years. Here Bill kept four engines, a Morgan sports car and latterly a brace of early series one Land Rovers. To earn a living Bill became an accountant, and a very good one at that, becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) and retiring in 1995 as Chief Accountant with the National Nuclear Corporation in Knutsford. Bill’s connection to road steam began in 1963 when he acquired the fully restored Burrell scc agricultural engine 2003 “Diamond Queen” from Richard Wilcox of Stroud. In 1972 his wife, Jacquie, bought Foden 5 ton wagon 1742 “Queen Mary” from R G Snodin of Solihill and this was followed by a Barrows 4hp portable. In 1982 Bill acquired the derelict remains of the oldest Wallis & Steevens engine in existence, the 7hp T series agricultural T169 of 1883, which took him 16 years to restore. Hia wife Jackqui had the idea to name the engine “Mayrnagh”, meaning ‘Survivor’ in the Manx gaelic language. Bill was also involved with the back stage side of steam preservation, being
an early member of the North Staffs & Cheshire TE Club, and a founder member of the Lancashire Traction Engine Club in 1965. Later he became a member of the Somerset TE Club and of the West of England Steam Engine Society. He was also heavily involved with the Road Locomotive Society, becoming its Chairman for a time in the 1980s and its President in 2004. His knowledge of Wallis & Steevens engines and Foden steam engines was legendary. There is no doubt his presence both on and off the rally field will be sorely missed. To his wife Irene, we send our sincere condolences. The funeral took place on the Isle of Man, at Douglas Crematorium on Friday 29th January. The LTEC sent a donation to The Cancer Research Fund in his memory. Photo: Bill, with his Wallis & Steevens engine “Mayrnagh” outside Ellesmere Port Boat Museum. Courtesy Ian Sanders
