Club News Club Archive? Wigan Festival of Transport
Widow of our late President, Alan Dagnall, Edna, has approached Alan Porter with an offer of Alan’s extensive collection of Traction Engine slides. These have probably been taken over the last forty or more years and I’m sure will be very interesting and worth cataloguing fully. It has been suggested that these slides could form the beginning of a club archive; a worthy idea if anyone is interested in taking them on. Perhaps the cataloguing could be done with all members help, during a club night, or two, before the memories of the beginnings of preservation get too hazy. Of course we realise scanning and storing slides electronically is a timeconsuming job but, if anyone can offer help in this regard, it would be much appreciated. Any ideas, suggestions or offers of help, please get in touch with any committee member. Thanks.
After much messing about by the DW Stadium we have now changed the date and the venue to August 25th & 26th at Haigh Hall, Wigan. We would like to invite your members to support this event which is in aid of the Children’s Charity ‘When you wish upon a star’. They can contact me on 01942 496855 or via the website www.festivaloftransport.co.uk William Clarke

Engine Notes By George Coles
I was pleased to see Rob Houghton’s Aveling traction engine out again at the Cheshire Steam Fair at Daresbury. It was looking very well in its new paint and canopy and he tells me that it was running well after its reassembly with a ‘new’ (i.e. different) cylinder block. I am very pleased for him after all the trouble that he has had with it over the last few years. He intends to run it until the end of the season and then it will be for sale as he has bought another engine! This is a Burrell ‘Devonshire’ engine. The Devonshire engine is a 6 nhp cylinder block on a 5 nhp boiler built in a very compact form, to go through narrow gates commonly found in Devon. His ‘new’ engine has come from the Southampton area and was new in 1909. It has been off the road for a number of years but has recently had some work done to the boiler. It does however require some mechanical work to bring it up to scratch. He has taken delivery of it and the wheels have been sent away for new rubbers to be fitted. pipe has been blowing since the start of the season and my crew decided that this should be investigated. It was removed, but as the engine had been lit up for some time, it was too hot to handle and was thrown to the ground. Unfortunately it hit the front axle and broke in half! The remaining straight piece was refitted and the engine did two parades, with the exhaust steam blowing into the smokebox but not up the chimney. Not a recipe for good steaming. I had an old exhaust pipe at home which was replaced about 25 years ago but was still usable. We attempted to fit this but it would not go through the hole in the chimney base. The base was new only about 5 years ago. A considerable amount of angle grinding was needed on the replacement exhaust pipe before it fitted through the hole. By Sunday we were back to normal and the engine is running well again.
The weekend of May 18th & 19th was elected to celebrate the centenary of three vehicles active within the club; the Chairman, George Coles’ 1913 Clayton & Shuttleworth ‘Lucy Ashton’, Alan Porter’s 1913 Burrell Roller ‘Old Ernie’ and the 1913 Steam Tug ‘Kerne’. All three, plus a couple of invited guests, gathered at Leigh Arms, Little Leigh, for a bit of a party. Unfortunately the celebrations had had to be turned down somewhat from original plans, due to there being less space available at this time of year (the car-park field was being used to grow a crop) but, nevertheless, plenty of wellwishers turned up and the party went with a bang; or was it a whistle?

Club Trip on the Manchester Ship Canal
The delayed Club Trip for 2012 eventually took place on 27th April ’13. It was chilly and showery but that didn’t distract from the enjoyment at all. The six hour trip is excellent. The Informative commentary was delivered live by a
lady who was obviously passionate about the history of the canal and very knowledgeable. Almost fifty members can on the trip and I hope every one of them enjoyed it as much as we did.
Club Trip 2014 This Autumn I have something a bit different organised for our Club Outing. Roger Dibnah has kindly acted as go-between and introduced me to Michael Oliver, predominantly of Oliver’s Valves but perhaps better known in our preservation circles as the man with an envious collection of engineering marvels. Apart from the Aveling & Porter Tractor ‘Fred’, Michael also owns, amongst many things, a 1929 Bentley Speed 6, a 1905 Leon Bollee, a 1955 MG TF 1500 and some restored aeroengines, including one from a Lancaster bomber and two from Spitfires.
He has agreed to take a party of members around his collection, based in Knutsford, sometime in September or October but, with his busy schedule, we won’t be able to tie him down to a date until nearer the time. It will however be a week day. If you are interested in joining the party, please let me know as soon as possible and ensure I have your up-todate contact details (preferably an email address). Then I can collect final numbers when the date has been set. Thanks. Hazel 01706 819426 / lancashiretec@aol.com
