MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS Have you got a renewal reminder in with this journal? If you have this will be the last journal you receive unless you can pay your subs. Payment can be made by post to Aidan or by cheque where you see the new LTEC banners around this summer. Please remember to fill in the form to accompany your payment. Thanks.

CHEQUES Please note, the bank has recently tightened up on security when we are paying in cheques. We have had a few returned because they weren’t made out to us EXACTLY as the bank would like. If you pay subs by cheque could you please ensure they are made out in future to ‘The Lancashire Traction Engine Club Ltd’. Apparently the ‘Ltd’ part is critical! Thankyou.

Engine Notes By George Coles

The new event at Ashley Hall over the late May Bank Holiday weekend turned out to be a successful event with a good turnout of engines. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it with my own engine as I had no fit crew available and was not fit enough myself. There were three engines which were not familiar. The Foden tractor No 13266 looked very smart and was in the charge of Johnsons of Banks. It is now owned by M J Wilkinson. Foden traction engine No 2701 purchased last

year by P Bowler of Stockport looked a fine engine. It has come from Australia I believe. Aveling Compound Roller No 5446 owned by Lee Chadderton of Ashton-under-Lyne was purchased in April 2014 and I understand that he is keeping it at George Sanders’ yard at Davyhulme. I am pleased to say that, at the time of writing, I am in better health and my engine is due to be lowloaded to Slaidburn in a few days’ time for the event there. It now has a new chimney top to replace the one which was damaged last year. It was made for me by Calder Metal Spinners of Brighouse who made the previous one 18 years ago.

NEWS Committee Changes Those of you who made it to the AGM this March will be aware that there have been a few changes to the committee. First Richard Fairhurst has decided to stand down. Richard has been an active member of the committee for well over 20 years. During that time he was Membership Secretary for about 14 years and brought the club into the modern age by developing and launching our first website. He was also a club representative on the May Day Steam committee, involved greatly in the organisation of that event for many years. I would like to offer Richard our thanks for all the years of service and don’t expect, just because you’re not on the committee any more, that we won’t still be calling on your expertise in the future! However, at the same meeting, two new people were voted on to the committee by a unanimous show of hands. Chris Adamson had already been approached by the committee to consider joining us. He is involved with the Lymm Transport Day organisation and acting as Steam Secretary for that event. Plus, as a new engine owner in our area, and regular attendee of the monthly meeting, we thought he would be ideally suited to bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the club. Also Hughie Winterbottom volunteered to join the committee. Many of you will know Hughie as he has been a member for many years and has recently finished a full restoration of his Sentinel S type waggon. Both men were welcomed to the committee. As well as changes to personnel there have been a few changes to job allocation. Neil Carney has stood down

from the job of Social Secretary after over 20 years. This positing was offered to Chris Adamson, which he has accepted. After discussion at the AGM the point was noted that we need some new ideas to encourage greater attendance at our meeting. Chris has taken this task on, but I’m sure will appreciate ideas and help from all members. The final change is to the webmaster position. Though Richard offered to continue in that position it was felt that it would be better to be done by someone on the committee and so the job has fallen to me. If you ever visit the website (www.lancashiretec.co.uk) you may have noticed that it has changed considerably since March. The content is similar but, if you have any submission of photos, news or other content that you think should be on the website, please let me know. We also have an active Facebook page, administered by myself and Chris. If you have a Facebook account please drop by, like the page, and join in with the chat there. A full list of your current committee is on the back cover of this journal, along with contact details. Please Note: the email addresses shown are now all fully working and will forward to the member shown.

LYMM HISTORIC TRANSPORT DAY Plans for the Lymm Historic Transport Day (28th June) are progressing well and we are pleased to announce that the LTEC will be well represented there. The programme for the day is already available online (at www.lymmtransport. org.uk) and includes full recognition of the LTEC as sponsors of the extensive steam section. The Warrington Guardian has run features and articles about the event, including one exclusively about the LTEC, its 50th anniversary and its new involvement with the LHTD. 13 full sized engines have confirmed attendance, plus miniatures

and other members exhibits. The coal for the engines will be delivered by the historic working boat ‘Ariel’, via the Bridgewater Canal which I’m sure will be a sight worth seeing. ‘Supremacy’ will be generating into Saturday evening and Sunday, the festival day itself, will begin with a parade through the village at 10.30. We will have a small marquee in the steam area on Henry Street Car Park, with club information and membership forms available, and are hoping to generate new interest and new members over the course of the event. If you can make it to the event, please drop by and say hello.

STEAMSHIP NEWS An amazing sight currently at Cammell Lairds in dry-dock No 4, Birkinhead; two steam ships together, both awaiting major work. They arrived on 22nd May and have been docked together on the smallest dock available. The ships are the 1913 Steam Tug Kerne and the 1903 Tug-Tender Daniel Adamson.

LANCASHIRE ENGINE RESTORED This is a picture of an engine that I thought some members of the LTEC would be interested to see. It is of McLaren 616 which, at one time belonged to Pip Atherton and, prior to that, Dan Fitter (who was Walter Fitter’s father). In fact 616 was one of the founding engine’s of the LTEC and went to their first Rally at Lowton. It also appeared on the cover of issue no1 of Iron Horse, in all the mud, with Walter driving but it looked a bit different then, as it was dark Oxford Blue. However, after I left Lancashire in the early 1970’s, the engine languished in Pip’s barn at Willow Farm in Bold Heath, until it was bought by my good friend Martyn How in the mid-90’s. Twenty years later, the restoration has been finished and it came out at a rally for the first time

in nigh-on forty years; at the Bill Targett Memorial Rally near Eastleigh over 13th & 14th May. I was over from France for the rally, with my roller, so I was there to see the McLaren unveiled. I even have a picture of me stood on it, which brought back memories of those early Burtonwood Rallies, when I used to drive it for Pip. The colour scheme has been changed to ‘green’ as this is what was found underneath one or two castings and bearing boxes when it was stripped down and is, therefore, presumed to have been its original colour. If any of our members know what ever happened to Pip Atherton I would very much like to know. Martin Clarke Morbihan, France
