mum-to-mum breastfeeding support

n the UK, in the year 2016-17, around 80% of new mothers breastfed their babies. By 6 - 8 weeks after birth, that number had dropped to 44.4%. While that is slight increase on previous years, it is still nowhere near what some other European countries are achieving (Norway achieves 71%).

The reasons behind this are complex but can include a lack of local support as services fall victim to public health cuts, inconsistent messaging from healthcare professionals, social stigma and lack of family support. However it has been proven that peer-to-peer support can hugely increase a mothers chance of continuing to breastfeed successfully, and that is where the La Leche League can help. We spoke to Rebecca from the La Leche League, Calderdale who told us more about our local group. “Mother to mother support is the heart of what we do at La Leche League. All

Music for the Many – for free!

e all know that making music is good for us. It improves our confidence. It makes us part of a community. It’s good for our health and it helps us to relax. Above all, singing or playing allows us to express ourselves. Music makes us happy.

Music can also make us cleverer. There is plenty of evidence that learning to play an instrument, particularly when young, can improve memory, language skills, maths, reading and fine motor skills. It’s also good for the ‘soft skills’ which help us to learn, such as discipline, team-work, concentration, risk-taking, creativity and perseverance.

meetings are led by mums who’ve breastfed and gone on to accredit as breastfeeding counsellors. We welcome new mums, experienced mums, pregnant women, those preparing for motherhood and the people who support them. We have a loose theme each meeting, but we’re happy to go with the flow of the discussion, especially if someone arrives with a burning question.” “You don’t have to be having problems to come to our meetings; sharing successes and companionship can be really supportive for new mothers too. And you don’t need to come for a whole session. We know what it’s like trying to get out with a newborn.” Of course there are always babies at the meetings, but toddlers and older siblings are welcome too. There are snacks and hot drinks (snack donations always appreciated) and a small library of breastfeeding and parenting books available to borrow for just £1 per week. As well as the meetings, LLL also offer one-to-one support through phone calls and social media. Please contact them to find out dates for upcoming meetings or to find out more.

Who wouldn’t want all that for their child? However, learning to play an instrument is an expensive business. Lessons are likely to cost £15 or more for half an hour. Then there’s the cost of buying or hiring an instrument. It’s not surprising that children from well-off families are much more likely to have lessons than children from poorer homes. While many children learn for a short time, perhaps through whole-class instrumental lessons in school, only those who can afford it will be able to continue and make progress. But is it possible that learning to play a musical instrument could be totally free to anyone who wishes to learn? Daniel Bath, a well-known figure in Calderdale’s musical landscape, believes that it can be done. Daniel’s experiences, working with schools, choirs, orchestras, churches and prisoners, have shown him the power that music has to transform lives – and the potential that lies hidden within children who cannot afford to pay. Daniel is passionate that instrumental teaching should be available for free – just like reading and writing. To make his dream a reality, Daniel and a team of like-minded colleagues have set up “Music for the Many”. This new charity has already begun to offer free lessons, delivered through primary schools, by highly experienced tutors. These are not means-tested but are free to all children in Key Stage 2 who wish to learn. The

project is launching in Todmorden, with its strong and vibrant tradition of community music-making; first at St. Joseph’s, with other schools to follow as soon as funding allows. So where will the money come from? Arts funding organisations will have an important role to play, but equally important are donations from all of us who value the gift that music brings to our children and our community. Some people choose to give because they are thankful for the opportunity that they had as a child. Others give so that children growing up today can get an opportunity that they themselves never had. Schools that join in with the scheme will raise funds, and a series of fundraising concerts has been planned. Music for the Many sees music-making as a joy that we all share, a privilege we are all entitled to, and a gift from which we all benefit. If you would like to support the scheme gifts of time, expertise and goodwill are all welcome. If you have any unloved musical instruments gathering dust in the attic, Music for the Many can put them to good use. You can also donate via their Justgiving page .

out & about BBC MediaCityUK Salford, M50 2EQ bbc.co.uk/showsandtours By Tracey Sunderland

N

ow who wouldn’t want to go to a BBC studio to see where they film Blue Peter or sit in the Mastermind chair? This was one day out that I really wanted to go on far more than the children I took. Suffice to say, I was embarrassingly excited.

I came across the booking website by chance and thought what a great opportunity and experience it would be. Then I had to find a few children to take! The availability and capacity for tour tickets is limited and I had to book a couple of months ahead as, in particular, I wanted us to go on the CBBC Interactive Tour, especially suited for children aged 6 to 11 (there are other tours available where the minimum age is 9 years old). The price is reasonable; to take two children and myself was under £30.00. FREE if you have a Blue Peter badge! Tours are available to book at weekend and during school holidays. MediaCityUK is a large development at Salford Quays, whose main tenants are media companies and the University of Salford. The BBC relocated a large part of its organisation here from London in 2007, including children’s TV production. Granada Studios and ITV also have facilities here. So this is now the home of CBBC, the TV channel which hosts programmes such as Hacker Time, Saturday Mash-Up!,

Newsround and Blue Peter. We visited on a Saturday. Parking was very easy as MediaCityUK is a short walk across from The Lowry Shopping Outlet and Theatre. On arrival at the main BBC reception, strict security checks were conducted and our tickets closely scrutinised. Warning! Travel light. No rucksacks or large bags are allowed and there are no cloakroom facilities. Once the inspection was complete, the fun could begin. The tour was led by two enthusiastic guides who were very knowledgeable and personable. They made sure all the children were included in the participation elements of the tour. The tour group itself was not large; there were about twenty people in total on ours. This is a standard number and the small group size really helps to make the experience a successful one. We began the tour by visiting a couple of audience testing facilities, then onto a radio production studio. This was fascinating, finding out how actual radio sounds are made. Who knew that a square block of Lego in a tall glass was the sound of ice in a drink? I won’t write here how they make the sound of actors being sick, all I can say is that enormous effort goes into the

detail! Then we went into a sound-proof area, which everyone found interesting, especially when we found out that Ed Sheeran had recorded a set in this room. From there we visited the Blue Peter studio, which wasn’t as large as I thought it would be, and then to the breakfast studio, complete with a red sofa. Here, if the children wanted to take part, they were encouraged to make a mock news programme, including reading the news, presenting the weather and introducing guests; all to camera and with a green screen. This was the highlight for some. There was also Hetty Feather costumes and Strictly Come Dancing outfits to look at, plus much, much more. I haven’t mentioned the Mastermind chair or looking into the green room of BBC6 Music! I would thoroughly recommend this day out. The tour was about 90 minutes long and it went so quickly. The two girls I took had a great time. The highlight for me was hearing Eliza vowing that she would never wash the bottom of her shoes again after she had stood on the exact spot where Ed Sheeran had performed; and then having to dodge the puddles on the way back to The Lowry where we went for a pizza before heading home. Definitely a five star experience!

family matters

A smart, clean cooker

H

ave you ever fantasised about someone coming to your house and... cleaning your oven for you? A young, polite and friendly man turning up on your doorstep, just as you’re calming down from a hectic family morning routine, armed with cloths, scourers and scrapers, ready to make your oven gleam like new again? I know it is regarded by some as a luxury. You can buy oven cleaning solutions in the supermarket for less than £5 that are supposed to work wonders; I have tried them and okay, some work better than others. The ones involving pouring gel into huge bags and soaking the removable shelves, etc for 12 hours, do clean the shelves nicely but I found a lot of scrubbing was still required inside the oven and made a lot of mess. The chemicals involved were strong and I was worried about spilling them or my children getting near them. So, as a pre-Christmas treat to myself, I booked a professional oven clean. It isn’t cheap (I have a double oven and hob so it was £70) but it was in a mess and was beginning to smell every time I put the

oven on. Chris worked solidly for almost 4 hours and did a job I don’t believe any bag of chemicals can ever match. He took the doors, the seals and knobs off; he cleaned in places I didn’t even know my cooker had; he scrapped and wiped and polished every nook and cranny and left it looking absolutely gleaming and show-room fresh. He had laid out floor protecting sheets and mats before he started so, when he finished, everything was just rolled up and taken away. There was no mess left behind at all, apart from the rest of the kitchen, which now looks grubby in comparison to my sparkly cooker (though he would have done my extractor and microwave too if I had asked; for £15 and £10 respectively). Now it is back to that condition I may

put a bit more effort in keeping it like that, by using the gels and chemicals every month or so and keeping on top of it. However, in reality, I may find I have things I would rather be doing and my call to Chris may become an annual treat. Chris also carries, and can fit, replacement bulbs, universal door seals and oven liners. Give him a call for full pricing information.

Q Since having my babies

I am finding I need to go to the loo immediately to avoid accidents. Worse than that, I no longer enjoy full intercourse because I find it painful. I realise this is due to postnatal changes but I’m looking for any help or advice you may have. A I am a Physiotherapist with a specialism in ‘Women’s Health’ or now more often called ‘Pelvic Health’. People who come to see me usually have one or more of the following symptoms; Leakage from the bladder or bowel; difficulty passing a stool; urgency to urinate

or going to the loo more frequently; recurrent bladder infections; pain in the pelvic area, including bladder pain; pain or lack of enjoyment during sexual intercourse; erectile problems; a bulge in the vagina/back passage or a feeling of ‘something coming down’ between the legs (prolapse). Symptoms usually creep up on people slowly. They may have had surgery in the pelvic area, a change in lifestyle, stress, taken up a new sport and, of course for women, being pregnant and having a baby can cause quite a stir in the downstairs region,

They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.

especially if the baby was big, the labour was very long, or there was an injury to the skin or muscles. The important part is the Pelvic Floor. Both women and men can suffer with incontinence and other issues due to pelvic health issues and often the treatments needed involve pelvic floor strengthening and relaxation. ‘Release work’ can help the muscles co-ordinate better and reduce pain. In women this is done vaginally; for men, this is done through the back passage. If your spine, hips or pelvis don’t move well, treatment and exercises will be given to help. Many patients also need advice on fluids, bladder training and will be advised to avoid caffeine. For some, if sex is painful, and fear is present (muscle tension),

treatments can involve counselling to help put coping strategies into place. When pelvic floor muscles are very weak, Biofeedback can be used, where an electrode is inserted (vaginally or anally). This can monitor the muscle strength on a visual graph and electrical stimulation can also be delivered to ‘wake’ the muscles up. So it may not be just as simple as ‘doing your pelvic floor exercises’! The main aim of physiotherapy with yourself would be to reduce pain, improve your bladder capacity and strengthen your pelvic floor to keep the leaks out. This is all achievable, but it takes time (2-3 months) and regular checks to make sure you are on the ‘right track’. Katy Winters Specialist in Pelvic Health

Top Tips… Avoid ‘just in case’ wees, they shrink the bladder. • Avoid caffeine. • Drink 1.5 litres of fluid per day • Tackle constipation • See your GP if you have pelvic pain or bleeding • Fast walking/swimming are good for ‘core activation’ • Stretch and move your spine regularly • Relax more – the body can’t function well if the mind is in • knots! If sex is painful, take the pressure off: try- ‘outercourse’ for • a while and take intercourse off the menu whilst everything settles down, arousal can only occur without fear.
