fter 60 editions of The Scallymag, that’s 15 years worth of news and reviews for parents in our area, we though a re-vamp was long overdue. We hope you like our new, updated style.

calendar plus a new feature, ‘Being Mum’, where local mum of two, Josie Pritchard, investigates a current issue affecting parents in Britain today. Don’t forget our front cover competition (some things we will never change) plus lots of other features and stories. So grab yourself a brew, sit down for a few minutes and enjoy your new-look Scallymag. Have a great Summer everyone!

We still have all the usual regular features; Local news, Out & About, Literacy and Health news and, of course, our indispensible diary pages. We also have some ‘What’s on’ pieces to help you plan your Summer

Funding boost for Luddenden village play area

oung people in Luddenden will soon be able to enjoy an improved play area in the village, thanks to Suez Communities Trust funding.

Calderdale Council will receive over £30,000 from the Trust, which will be used to make improvements to the play area in Luddenden village. The Council worked closely with the local Luddenden Mayor’s Fund on the funding application. The community group also consulted with local children to find out what they wanted to see in their play area. The new equipment set to be installed includes climbing blocks, a new basket swing and spinning bowl as well as educational play panels for younger children. The play items will improve the local outdoor facilities and encourage more children to be active more often, complementing the Council’s Active Calderdale movement. Calderdale Council’s Assistant Director – Neighbourhoods, Andrew Pitts, said:

“It’s great news that residents and visitors to Luddenden will soon be able to enjoy improved facilities at the local play area. “It’s especially important that young people in the village have contributed to the design of the play area, by providing feedback on the type of facilities they would like to see installed.” Gill Radford, Chair Person of the Playground Subcommittee at Luddenden, said: “I am delighted that the grant application has been successful and that SUEZ Communities Trust has made it possible for the village to update its playground.” Marek Gordon, Chairman of SUEZ Communities Trust, added: “SUEZ Communities Trust provides funding awards through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.4 billion. We were delighted to be able to offer funding to Calderdale Council.”

SUEZ Communities Trust is an independent funding body set up in 1997 to provide funding through the Landfill Communities Fund. To date SUEZ Communities Trust has supported more than 3,900 projects to a combined value of over £110 million using tax credits donated by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK (formerly SITA UK). The funding is used to improve vital public recreation facilities such as village halls, community centres, sport, heritage, green spaces and play areas. The Landfill Communities Fund is an innovative tax credit scheme enabling Landfill Operators to contribute money to organisations enrolled with the scheme. Since its inception, in 1996, over £1.4 billion has been spent on more than 53,000 projects across the UK. For information on how to apply for funding from SUEZ Communities Trust call (01934) 524013 or visit www.suezcommunitiestrust.org.uk

Maximum fun at Maxwell’s

Food at the College

M

axwell’s Fun House in Hollins Mill has recently started a huge expansion programme that will make it an all encompassing family complex in the heart of Walsden. Laura told us all about the plans; “First, our existing customers will be pleased to know that the ball pool and frame is to remain. It has been popular with families since we opened so there is no reason to change it. However, we have recently taken the lease of the unit next door. We are busy knocking through a door between the two and will create a exclusive party area in there, with a dedicated Nerf gun and Laser quest arena.” Further to this, Laura has also taken on the lease of all of the second floor of the mill, with even bigger plans for that space. “Over the past few years this space has been used for many things; snooker hall, bar, function room and gym, to name just a few.” Laura told us. “We are currently stripping everything out so we can see the original building again, then we will split it up into different areas.” Hopefully, in the coming months, there will be a new bar, kitchen and function room installed. There will also be a second ball pool and a large climbing and bouldering venue, part of which will be over two floors. It is hoped the first phase will be completed by the middle of June so check it out, next time you’re passing!

O

n February 12th history was made in Todmorden when Calderdale Council agreed that the best option for the future of the College and the town was to hand over the building to Todmorden Learning Centre rather than allow Aldi to develop the site for a bigger supermarket. This made them the first asset transfer to successfully outbid a supermarket.

At the time Emma Leeming, of TLC, said: “It’s been a lot of really hard work to put together a workable plan and we’re over the moon that this hard work has paid off. “We’ll be working with the council to create a facility which nourishes the town and is sustainable - for businesses, for the community and for education.” And so, on 23rd June, the first Food Day will be hosted by Todmorden Community College. The event is being coordinated by Todmorden Food Assembly and is planned to be a day of fun, learning, sharing and creating, all about food. An extravaganza of activities will be there, including tastings, arts activities, storytelling, workshops, demos, discussions and a chance to try your hand at plate spinning and other circus skills. You can wander through the Makers Market full of local produce and goodies, or join in the mass forage and help create a Pay-as-you-Feel dinner. There will also be a chance to hear more about TLC’s plans for the new community-owned College. The event is open between 10am and 5pm and entry is by donation. The event is part of the Incredible Festival of ideas, taking part along the valley between Thursday 21st and Sunday24th June. Visit www.incrediblefestival.org.uk for more information.

Hebden’s Handmade Parade

T

his year’s Handmade Parade in Hebden Bridge will take place on Sunday 24th June. The parade begins at 11.30 and will be followed by a postparade Picnic in the Park between 12.00 and 3.30.

The Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade is an annual celebration of creativity and imagination. Two weeks of open workshops involving local artists, families, volunteers, guest artists and amazing street bands start on Saturday 9th June and everyone is invited to take part. The workshops culminate in the spectacular parade event, with up to 1000 people dancing down the streets and around the park of Hebden Bridge, watched by thousands more. Artistic Director, Kerith Ogden says: “The 2018 Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade will be a chance for our community, our artists, and our audience to get really creative and have fun exploring the idea of

Punch In The Park

a travelling fair and circus coming through our town. There’ll be ridiculous rides, surreal sideshows, weird circus, and all the fun of the fair” When the workshop doors open, everyone is invited to go along and create a costume, a parade artwork or giant puppet. You can also get involved in parade classes learning samba, dance and stilt walking. For more information please go to www. handmadeparade.co.uk/hebdenbridge-parade The parade organisers are also looking for volunteers. They tell us it’s a lot of fun and you’re really helping bring excitement to the community. For more information please email, volunteer@ handmadeparade.co.uk

Camel Racing comes to Todmorden

F

ollowing the success of last year’s event, Centre Vale Park in Todmorden will once again play host to a traditional country fair, on Saturday 7th July.

This year’s fair follows in the footsteps of an excellent 2017 show, all thanks to the fantastic team of volunteer helpers and the large number of visitors who supported the event. For 2018, the organisers aim to showcase the very best of our local producers alongside unusual and informative displays such as coracles, chainsaw sculptures and sheep sheering (electric and manual). There will be dog shows; you can enter your own dog on the day in lots of different categories, including Best Toothy Grin, Waggiest Tail or Smartest Trick, plus obedience and agility. There will be classic cars and a huge array of food to tempt you. Visitors will be entertained with displays from Sikh Martial Arts, Birds of Prey, Mad About Science and Safari Phil with his exotic creatures. Children will be able to enjoy a donkey ride and the main attraction, not to be missed, will be Joseph’s Camel Racing. In addition to the live displays, the park will host stalls from local and national charity groups, offering lots of interesting information.

There will also be a mid afternoon auction of “No longer used treasures”. Take your stuff along to be auctioned but, if it is impossible for you to bring your item on the day, please contact the phone number below for more information and assistance. Auction proceeds will be going to local charities. The event organisers will be donating to local charities from the proceeds of last year’s country fair. Local charities and independent groups are invited to make their presentation for assessment. All suggestions must be submitted in writing and addressed to Todmorden Country Fair, 48c Halifax Road, Todmorden OL14 5QG. The deadline date is Wednesday 20th June. Successful applicants will be notified and the cheques will be presented at the Fair on Saturday 7th July. Once again, this event is an opportunity for local people to get together and make a truly great day for all the family Tickets are available via local shops or online www. todmordencountryfair.co.uk

Tatton Park,

T

Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 6QN | 01625 374400 | tattonpark.org.uk

his is one of those places that every year, as we drive past the road signs destined for somewhere else, I promise we are going to visit but we never actually manage to make it. So when I was stuck for ideas of where to go for my birthday treat (yes, I have to organise that too), I came up with Tatton Park. My birthday, my decision, my treat, so no one is allowed to complain – that’s the rules in our family!

Tatton Mansion Hall and Park is believed to be one of the UK’s most complete historic estates, spread over 1,000 acres of deer park. It is home to a Tudor Old Hall, a neo-classical mansion, 50 acres of landscaped gardens, a rare-breed farm, an adventure playground and an essential cluster of tearooms and visitor shops. For nearly 400 years the estate was the property of the Egerton family until 1958 when it was bequeathed to the National Trust. To-day it is financed and maintained by Cheshire East Council. Once the cost-saving picnic was packed, it took under an hour to drive to. Beware, there is a £7.00 entrance and parking fee, however this allows you access to drive around and explore the park. If you want to visit the mansion house and gardens, this is all extra. If you wanted just to go for a (sunny) day out with a picnic and let the children enjoy the adventure play-ground and

wander freely around the beautiful scenic deer park, then this is all that it will cost. In my humble opinion, I think the fee is worth it as it covers so much more than a parking charge! Should you want to visit the other attractions, as we (I) did, then I still found them reasonably priced. A family ticket (2 adults and 3 children) to gain access to the mansion only is £19.00. Tatton Park is big with a number of family attractions, again, in my humble opinion, too much to do in one day. So we were selective and just visited the Mansion House and had a long walk around a small part of the park. It’s worth planning what you want to do and see before you go. That way you can budget your time and your finances! Our visit to the Mansion House was fascinating and even interested the younger members of the Sunderland clan. There is an amazing library, lots of fabulous artwork and stunning damask furnishings

Out & About

to wonder at. One of my favourite rooms was the dining room, where a massive table is fully set with a Minton dinner service dating from the mid-19th century. So glad I wasn’t in service then doing the washing up! At the end of the 19th century around 40 indoor servants worked here supervised by a housekeeper and house steward. With Tatton Mansion you get the rare opportunity to visit ‘upstairs and down’ and see the whole of the house, not just selected rooms, so you get a complete experience of what the house was like in its heyday. Guides were present in most of the rooms and were knowl-edgeable and helpful in answering questions. We all really enjoyed the tour around and felt it was well worth the money. After a picnic near the adventure playground (situated near the main car park), we took a lovely amble to explore the park. Deer just wander freely and get unbelievably close.

We were aiming to stroll to a marked viewing point around Tatton Mere, but we never made it, it was too far for those of us with shorter legs. However, definitely worth a visit on another sunny day when we can further explore the number of nature trials that there are dotted around. Sturdy shoes are needed particularly if the weather has not been good as the ground can be uneven and muddy. Taking a pram or buggy would be fine on some of the walks, check out the Trail leaflets for suitable routes first. Toilets are plentiful; baby changing facilities are available and all are of a good standard. We all had a really enjoyable day as there was something for everyone. It is the sort of place you go for a day out every year or so and choose something different to do each time. I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday treat – well done me! By Tracey Sunderland

Being Mum By Josie Pritchard

H

ave you heard of “Yik Yak”? “Ask Fm”? “Voxer”? Me neither, but then I admit to coming from the generation before smart phones and am just about managing to keep up with Facebook and its everchanging interface. I don’t get Twitter or Instagram at all and I’m banned from Snapchat by my children. And that’s it. The extent of my knowledge. So if, like me, you have tweens or teens, then read on. This is stuff you need to know.

You may be aware that Facebook, the first and, by a long way, the largest social media site is seriously un-cool. It has become the place that parents and their parents hang out. Your connected child will probably have an account there and may even have accepted your friends request but, do they use it? It is constantly trying to re-invent itself with its ‘stickers’ and ‘un-like’ buttons but the kids have gone; disappeared into their own world of Vine and Yubo where mum and dad will never even dare to look, never mind actually find them and see what they are doing there. It is scary though. A few of the worst offenders have made the headlines and been flagged up to parents. You may recall the controversy when Snapchat introduced Snapmaps. Every Snapchat user (and that must be about 157% of young people) automatically broadcasts their location to all their contacts, all the time. If their account is public (please ensure your child’s account is NOT public) then they are broadcasting this information for all the Snapchat world to see. It doesn’t take a genius parent to see the potential risks that are associated with this, so Snapchat have introduced a Ghost Mode. If your child is not yet of an age where

16

their friends might need to know at exactly which park gate they are waiting for them, turn on Ghost Mode! One of the most worrying problems that arises from uncontrolled social media is cyberbullying. The anonymity that some apps offer to would-be bullies can be lethal. Ask Fm is a site where users ask other users questions and can make them anonymous, leading to obvious problems. Kiwi is another where anonymity is possible and, of course, fake accounts can always be created in most apps. Inappropriate content is also a huge concern, whether it is unsolicited contact from a stranger where an image or video opens immediately, or whether the user believes an image will be deleted within a few seconds so sends ‘compromising’ images that can be screen shot and used to intimidate them later. Look out for Kik, Snapchat, Tumblr, Tango, Periscope and Yubo. And what about those apps that allow complete strangers to connect? In fact some of them exist solely to allow this to happen. Omegle randomly connect you to anyone else who is using the site, from anywhere around the world, and allows to you chat by audio or video. It is done

Feature

H anonymously initially until you chose to share personal information. What are they thinking? Okay, it says it is for ages 13+ only but there are no checks on signing up and no parental consent required. Other apps flagged up as potentially allowing contact from strangers are Tango, Instagram, ooVoo, Allo, Glide and IMVU. Finally, those pesky in-app purchases that can run to hundreds of pounds if you’re not careful. The games apps are the worst offenders here, but there are some social sites, such as Viber, that charge for extra stickers! Of course most of these apps state they are for ages 13+, and even that can be considered too young for some, but how do they actually prevent younger children from using them? And what can you do as a parent? The primary advice is to speak to your child about them. Even before they want to get involved with social media, make sure they understand the risks, follow the rules and, most importantly, know that they can talk to you if they feel uncomfortable about anything. Here are some top tips to keep in mind: • Apple, Android and Windows phones and devices all have parental control setting you can apply to your child’s device so they can’t download non-age appropriate apps. A quick Google search will show you how to do this. • If your child does want to download a new app, make sure they tell you they are doing it, even the free ones. Then go through the security setting together. • Make sure your child knows the risk of sharing - anything! Explain why they must never share their passwords with anyone; not even their closest friends or girlfriend/boyfriend. And, when it comes to sharing images, a simple rule to remember is - if you wouldn’t share it with your family, don’t share it online.

Coping With Hayfever

ay Fever can make Summer miserable to anyone who suffers. It is simply an allergic reaction to pollen, typically when it comes into contact with your mouth, nose, eyes and throat. So it is worse when the pollen is around in the air, between March and September. Symptoms can include sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears, pain around your temples and forehead and feeling tired. There’s currently no cure for hay fever. You can’t prevent it but you can do things to ease the symptoms when the pollen count is high. Things to do... • put Vaseline around nostrils to trap pollen • wear wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting into eyes • shower and change clothes after being outside to wash pollen off • stay indoors whenever possible • keep windows and doors shut as much as possible • vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth • buy a pollen filter for the air vents in the car and a vacuum cleaner with a special HEPA filter. Things to avoid... • cutting grass or walking on grass • spending too much time outside • keeping fresh flowers in the house • smoke or being around smoke – it makes symptoms worse • drying clothes outside – they can catch pollen. Also, don’t forget you can speak to your pharmacist if you or your child appears to have hay fever. They can give advice and suggest the best treatments to ease the symptoms, like antihistamine drops, tablets or nasal sprays to help with itchy and watery eyes, sneezing and a blocked nose.

Local News

S

ophie Lancaster was murdered in a hate motived attack in Bacup, Lancashire on the 24th August 2007 when she was just 20 years old.

Her mother, Sylvia Lancaster, wanted to ensure that no-one else suffered such violent prejudice again so she established The Sophie Lancaster Foundation with three main aims : • To create a lasting legacy to Sophie • To work educationally to challenge prejudice and intolerance of people from alternative subcultures • To work for an extension of the hate crime strands to include “Alternative Subcultures” To this effect, the foundation, based in Haslingden, developed secondary education resources which have been used in hundreds of schools throughout the UK and in 2014 The Sophie Lancaster Foundation created a Primary Resource Pack available for Key Stage 2 (years 3-6). This was made possible through funding from The Big Lottery/Lancashire Telegraph Fund and was piloted in East Lancashire primary schools. The resource is interactive and thought provoking and has been developed as a six week P.S.H.E. package, which can also be used to provide a variety of one hour sessions if preferred.

The sessions challenge common preconceptions and enable pupils to explore their values and beliefs, and where they originate from, in a safe environment. Subcultures and all strands of diversity are explored through character cards, task cards, images, vocabulary, videos, music, discussion, creative writing/artwork, role play and physical transformation. The content and structure enables a wide range of issue- based topics to be explored including: how to respect equality and diversity in relationships, physical, mental and emotional well-being, how to recognise and manage emotions within a range of relationships, respect for self and others, rights and responsibilities, managing transition, bullying and hate crime incidents. The sessions support the development of critical thinking, empathy, increased awareness and understanding of difference and diversity, the consequences of actions for self and others and a deeper knowledge of cultural issues in the wider world.

19

The resource has proved to be an excellent tool for teachers wishing to explore these issues. Primary school teachers can book onto one of the training days to enable them to deliver the resources themselves. Over the last ten years the foundation has worked with police forces throughout the UK delivering training to officers and other professionals; this has resulted in eighteen police authorities adding “Alternative Subcultures” to the monitored strands of hate crime recorded. The Sophie Lancaster Foundation recently marked the tenth anniversary of Sophie’s death which was a time of reflection for what has been accomplished as Sophie’s legacy. One of their proudest achievements was Sylvia being awarded an OBE in ‘15 for her work which included being an advisor to the government on hate crime issues. The foundation was also awarded the prestigious No28te “Upstanding Organisation of the Year Award” in October ‘17 which was a huge accolade of all the achievements of the small charity and its committed team of staff, volunteers, patrons and supporters. Then, to cap it all, the BBC3 film “Murdered For Being Different” won the Best Single Drama in the BAFTA TV awards in May. For more information please see www.sophielancasterfoundation.com

Pasta with Aubergine and Pine Nuts By Richard Dalby

T

his truly authentic Italian dish is a brilliant way of introducing aubergine into family meals; as well as olives, and even possibly capers. The combination of different flavours and textures come together as one so perfectly; it really is a thing of Italian genius. Like any good pasta sauce this is easy to prepare at home and so much more delicious than a shop bought sauce. All you need to serve with this is a nice simple salad. Enjoy!

Ingredients

Method

Serves 4

• • • • • •

• • • •

1 large aubergine, cut into small bite sized cubes 2 tbsp of olive oil 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 3 tbsp tomato puree 25g pine nuts 10 salted or pickled capers, soaked in water for 10 minutes, then drained and chopped 1 small chilli, finely chopped 20 olives, stoned, roughly chopped. 400g penne / rigatone pasta Finely grated parmesan cheese to serve

21

Leave the aubergine cubes in lightly salted water for an hour then drain, squeeze out the water and pat dry on paper towels. In a large frying pan, cook the aubergine in olive oil until slightly browned, adding the garlic towards the end of this step so that the garlic doesn’t burn - add a little more olive oil if too dry. Add the tomato puree, pine nuts, capers, chilli and olives and fry gently for 10 minutes. Cook the pasta in boiling salted water until al dente, then drain and mix well with the sauce. Serve with the grated cheese.

Health Matters

O

ur teenage son has recently had a growth spurt and now he is walking like an old man - what can we do to help him? Regular trips to the shoe shop and trousers that seem to shrink in the wash are features of living with teenagers. In their teens, children put on an amazing growth spurt to reach their adult height. Girls usually do this more gradually from 8 to 14, but in boys it often occurs more suddenly between 13 and 16 and they can grow taller by as much as 9 cm in a year! This phenomenal growth starts at the outside of the body and works in. Hands and feet are the first to expand so needing new shoes is often the first sign of trouble. Next the arms and legs grow longer, but even here the ‘outside in’ rule applies and the shin bones lengthen before the thigh and the forearm before the upper arm. Finally the spine grows and right at the end the chest and shoulders of boys broaden out and in girls their hips and pelvis widen. Growth spurts happen to all kids, but they can wreak havoc on their athletic life and posture. Their bodies go through periods of rapid vertical growth punctuated by periods of “filling out” as the muscles catch up with the bones. Particularly in boys there are great periods of time where the bone growth out-strips the muscle growth and during this time they can look hunched and awkward. Add to this that due to the rapid upward growth they are having to deal with a changing centre of

gravity and it’s no wonder teenagers often appear clumsy. The good news though is that there are definite things that help! • Good nutrition throughout this time is essential as growing bodies need all the fuel they can get to help with the rapid growth. • Regular sleeping habits will help the body adjust to the changes it is going through and allow it to continue its repairing functions also, so don’t be surprised if they seem to be permanently asleep! • It is important to maintain activity level, despite the temporary clumsiness, so encourage them to keep up with sports and explain that the lack of co-ordination will improve. • Stretching is more important than ever to help ensure that the muscles can lengthen and keep up with the sudden bone growth. As well as stretching pre and post sport they often benefit from stretching on a daily basis and may need help initially with this to ensure correct technique. • Core strengthening exercises are key to keeping stability, especially around the spine, as they shoot upwards. Pilates type exercises may seem dull to a teenager, but all the football academies recommend this type of training as they recognise the importance of deep muscle strength in their players.

23

Safe Hamstring stretches The most common tight muscles are the hamstrings - the muscle at the back of the thigh. When these tighten it can affect the spine as well as the legs leading to an inability to straighten up properly. The safest form of hamstring stretch is NOT to touch your toes as you are more likely to stretch your back than your hamstrings. Instead lie on your back. Raise your left leg with a straight knee until you feel a slight pull in the back of the thigh keeping your bottom on the ground. Hold this for 10 seconds and as the tightness subsides raise your leg a little further (keeping your knee straight) till you feel the pull again. Hold for another ten seconds and then try to raise it a little higher for a final ten seconds. Repeat on the other leg and do each stretch three times on each leg. If you have concerns about any teenager with muscular or joint issues associated with growth spurts visit one of our Physiotherapists for an MOT - during an hour appointment we will check muscle lengths and joints and teach correct stretching individualised to your child and the sports and activities they take part in. If you have any health questions, querys or concerns you would like to ask an expert about, please contact us by any of the methods shown on page 3.
