join in with building the new eco-classroom in todmorden
C
astle Hill Primary School in Todmorden is going to get a new classroom and it will be built from straw, earth, wood stone and sedum. Greenstone Design have designed a simple and innovative building with a focus on the materials used and maximising the learning opportunities for the children and the local community. There will be a new indoor space that reflects the ethos of the school and their links to the local community and local groups such as Incredible Edible Todmorden, and a new veranda, incorporating an existing outdoor structure, will provide additional learning space for groups to use outside and somewhere to shelter during playtimes if it is wet. Greenstone Design will provide a full design and build service to the school but children and local people will not have to wait until the end of the construction process to find out about the building. Local people are being given the opportunity to learn the construction techniques building of cob and straw bales by coming on training courses. Three four-day courses are planned to be held on the site. 3-6th
July and 10-13th July will be straw bale building courses, while 11-14th August will be a clay and cob course. Cob will be used to create reading nooks in the library. This is where course participants can let their creative juices flow. Participants must be over 16 to take part and the cost will be £220. Please contact Greenstone Design (www. greenstone-design.co.uk) for more information and to register your interest.
The materials have been chosen to create a super insulated, acoustically sound and healthy building. No toxic materials will be used in the building fabric and every care will be made to keep the local building products source as local to Todmorden as possible. The building will be clad to the rear and side with Larch boards. This will be harvested by local company Black Bark cut from the woods at Hardcastle Crags. Michelle, Director of Greenstone Design said: “We are really pleased to be involved in this local project. Many school buildings need considerable refurbishment or extra space for growing numbers of pupils. Castle Hill has already turned unusable space into learning platforms by creating a forest school and growing beds in the playground. This building will provide much needed creative space for pupils to develop their ideas and also will host after school clubs. We strongly believe that the environment around us directly effects children’s attitudes and their ability to learn and explore ideas. It is because of this that we want to create beautiful, inspiring learning spaces for local school children and teachers.”

news Perfect place for a rainy day…
I
f you’re looking for somewhere to entertain the kids on a rainy day then look no further than Maxwell’s Fun House in Walsden.
Situated just off Rochdale Road, in Hollins Mill (Pockets Mill), this newly opened play gym offers the perfect environment for kids to let off steam while you put your feet up and enjoy one of their range of special coffees, teas or homemade cakes. Packed full of slides, ballpools and climbing apparatus, Maxwell’s manages to provide plenty of entertainment while still retaining a family feel which many bigger competitors don’t offer. There’s even something for younger visitors with chalk boards, books, colouring and an In The Night Garden themed corner. If you’re looking for a bargain then why not try a Thursday evening after school when you get entry and a child’s meal for just £6? You can pick from the well-priced child menu offering all the usuals like beans on toast, hot dogs or sandwiches and if you’re a bit peckish, to go for one of the panninis, which are great value for money.
Maxwell’s House also makes the ideal location for children’s parties. I recently held my 5-year-olds birthday bash there and was really impressed. We went for the basic package, where the children had an hour and a half play before sitting down to eat in the party room. My little girl was particularly impressed with the throne. The kids made short work of munching through the range of sandwich and crisps before starting on the miniature cakes and biscuits. If you don’t want to splash out on food then you can make your own and just hire the venue. I can’t speak highly enough of Maxwell’s. It’s clean, it’s fun and friendly. My kids are already big fans and so am I! I would highly recommend giving it a try. By Shelley Sullivan
Spectator guide to the Tour de France
O
ver the weekend of 5th & 6th July over 3 million spectators are expected to be lining the route of the three race stages so, obviously, there will be disruption. Be prepared! Here is our guide to help you get the most from the Tour de France weekend.
Where will you watch?
Think about what you want to see. The start, when the riders set out; the race, when they compete for the best time and the coveted Yellow Jersey; one of the much anticipated climbs or the sprinters going all out for the finish. Wherever it is, remember, moving around once the Tour has started is not allowed, so; • Plan to be there early, or even the night before if you’re camping out, to secure the best spot. • Fancy some freebies? Don’t miss the build-up to the race with the caravan, 2 and a half hours before, where the weird and wacky vehicles throw out goodies to the crowd. • Choose your spot wisely and stick with it!
If you want to head out into the countryside, away from the crowds, bear the following in mind; • Take everything you need in terms of food, water and clothing • Let someone else know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. • Keep hydrated and keep happy on what will hopefully be the hottest of summer days. • Take litter and leftover food home or throw it away in a bin. • Avoid smoking in the countryside, and be extremely careful with flames and cigarettes and barbeques. • Leave gates as you find them, and only follow footpaths. • There have been crashes in the past when loose dogs have got onto the road during the race. Think seriously about whether to take a dog with you. • If you do decide to take your dog, keep them on a short lead. Not only for their own protection but also that of any nearby wildlife. Check for details of places where dogs are not allowed.
Spectator Hubs
There is a great alternative if you’re not that adventurous or are just looking for a family day out to enjoy all the action. All around the region ‘Spectator Hubs’ will be set up. Our nearest will be in Calder Holmes Park in Hebden Bridge. Here there will be a big screen so you won’t miss a second of the action, plus music, food and lots more family fun. The park will be open between 3rd and 7th July and has capacity for 5000 people.
Tips to make the day extra special:
Don’t forget, when you are watching the greatest cycle race in the world, you will need to bring: • Team colours • Jaunty hat • Plenty of water • Picnic • Flag & cowbell Have a good time everyone!
out & about merseyside attractions
www.spaceport.org.uk/www.u-boatstory.co.uk/ www.merseyferries.co.uk/
young children may be scared by the darkness in the exhibition space and the planetarium show, there is probably too much reading for under sevens and not enough interesting stuff for older children or those who already know about space. But for those who are just learning, it might be enough to spark an interest. There is no cafe on site but there are some vending machines for snacks and drinks. There is a cafe right next door, at the ferry terminal but, at the time of writing, this is closed due to flood damage. The entrance fee to the museum is too high for the museum alone. We would suggest you add the few pounds more and combine it with the Mersey Ferries cruise and maybe the U-boat story too, and make a full day of it.
U-Boat Story
A short ferry ride along the river from Spaceport will bring you to the U-Boat Story Exhibition. This is a much smaller affair than the Spaceport museum, being more of a simple exhibition with artefacts and archive films with an outdoors space containing the actual U-Boat. The story of the U-Boat and how it came to be on the Mersey is an interesting one, which I won’t go into here, but bear in mind this is a salvaged ship that lay at the bottom of the sea for many years, so you can’t get ‘on board’ as such. It has actually been cut into sections so you can see inside. If it’s raining, take an umbrella. There is a lovely 1920 style cafe in the ferry terminal right next door
but may be more suited to a pleasant afternoon tea. It would be a bit pricey for a family to have lunch.
Mersey Ferries River Explorer Cruise
If you wish to add a small amount to entry to either of the above attractions, or just do this alone, you get a 50 minute, narrated cruise on the river and can break your journey at any, or all, the three ports - Seacombe for Spaceport, Woodside for the U-Boat Story and Liverpool’s Pier Head Terminal for a huge selection of museums, galleries and, of course, shopping. Snacks and drinks are available on board.

Spaceport
Located on the south side of the Mersey, across the water from Liverpool, Spaceport is a an attraction aimed at children aged 5 and over. It isn’t big; the recommended time spent inside is 2 hours, including a half hour in the Spacedome Planetarium but, as our children were maybe a bit old for the target market, we were struggling to fill 2 hours. The main gallery area is downstairs. You enter the museum through the ‘Space Pod’ - a room with a bit of a light show with one entrance door and a different exit door. I didn’t really see the point, other than to spread the visitors out a bit. It didn’t do anything unexpected or exciting. There are two main galleries. One about the Solar System, the second about the Milky Way. There are some nice models and demonstrations, a few interactive things but a lot of reading which may be a bit boring for children. At the back of the museum is the Planetarium. This is obviously the main feature of the museum with some lie-back seating and the film projected onto the domed roof. The film we saw was okay, with a spacey theme, but it wasn’t what I would call a planetarium show. Upstairs is the exhibition space. Currently themed as ‘Time Travel’, it was a collection of Dr Who memorabilia and models. I would suggest you would get most from this museum if your children were aged between seven and ten and not particularly into space science. Very
Getting there
We drove to Spaceport. There is a large, free car park there. The U-Boat Story has a pay-and-display car park adjacent to it; or you could head to Liverpool where there are numerous car-parks and, of course, the railway station.

Gorpley Wood Off Baup Road, Todmorden www.walk4life.info
I
My search led me to a really useful website, www.walk4life.info. There, under the ‘search for a walk’ tag, I entered my postcode and was delighted to discover there are loads of walks listed in the Rossendale area. I was especially interested in the Walk4Life Miles. Simply put, these are walking routes about a mile long and can be found in parks, along footpaths and canals. These routes are mostly way-marked with distinctive yellow way-markers showing where they start and end. I chose a circular walk at Gorpley Wood, as was close to home but somewhere we hadn’t explored before. Perfect distance, I thought, for little people with little legs. There is a small car park, just off the A681 and close to a nearby bus stop. Once parked up, snacks packed in backpack, we were off! From the car park we took the left-hand path. A very clear and well-made pathway was ahead of us. I just followed the children, barely able to keep up. This walk at Gorley Wood is formed around a deep, steep clough and the path follows a stream where waterfalls and plunge pools can be seen. On the sunny afternoon that
we were there, it was beautiful and it had almost a magical feel about it. At the halfway point we stopped for a drink and snacks and to review the map I had printed off. We had a choice; we could go back the way we came (which was lovely) or take a higher path. A vote was taken and the motion was carried to take higher path back. This was easy, guided by the well-placed way-markers. However, there was also a warning sign of a steep drop with no barrier. I felt confident that my elder son and daughter could be trusted to walk sensibly but I maintained a tight grip on the hand of my younger son. The path was not that narrow, maybe 3ft wide and was safely constructed. Nonetheless, my youngest is 4 years old and can be easily distracted. Speaking of distractions, further along this way back, we found a strange dwelling located in an old tree stump with a little, bright blue door and red door handle. The sign beside it read, “Do not feed the gnome”. Of course the children had to look inside, but I won’t tell you what we found, I don’t want to spoil the surprise! This higher path let us enjoy some great views over
the countryside before dropping down at a manageable gradient back to the car park. In total the walk was 1.03 miles, to be precise, and took about 45 minutes to complete allowing for an essential snack break, of course! This particular walk was not suitable for prams and pushchairs but, if you look on the walk4life website, I am sure there will be others more suitable as you can make it a criteria for your search. Although we went in the summer holidays we all have decided to go back and complete the walk again in the autumn to see how the trees have changed colour and what we can collect for the inevitable school nature project. It’ll be a perfect Sunday afternoon activity. By Tracey Sunderland
Photos: T Sunderland
was looking for something to entertain the children for an hour or so, that didn’t have an entrance fee and that didn’t involve a slide or swing. Something that got them (and me) some exercise, doing something that I could let them take the lead on; maybe get them to start taking an interest in learning to read maps and walking signposts.
Walk4Life was originally part of the Government’s Change4Life campaign. It was set up to encourage families and adults to eat well, move more and live longer, by making small lifestyle changes that add up to big health benefits. The initiative is all about helping people move and walking is a great way to start. Walk4Life Miles are supported by community groups, Walking for Health groups, local councils and a range of other organisations.

bloke in a kitchen Summer Berry Pudding
T
By Richard Dalby
his sumptuous Summer dessert looks quite spectacular - but it’s much easier to make than you’d think. The taste is light and fresh and makes the perfect treat after a busy day spent playing out in the sunshine. The icing sugar also helps the mascarpone and yoghurt to ‘set’ and, as long as you chill it well at the bottom of your fridge, it should be quite easy to turn out onto a serving plate.
Ingredients • • • • • • •
200ml (7fl oz) grape juice 150g (5oz) sponge fingers 250g (9oz) mascarpone 300g (11oz) thick Greek yogurt Half a teaspoon of vanilla extract 3 tablespoons of sifted icing sugar 450g (1lb) mixed berries, (such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) quartered or halved if large
Method 1. .
. 4. 5.
Line the inside of a 2 litre (3½ pint) pudding dish / basin with clingfilm, leaving plenty spare at the top to wrap over the finished pudding. Pour the grape juice into a shallow container and dip the sponge fingers into it briefly (a second or two is enough to dampen them – any more and they’ll become too soggy). Line the sides and bottom of the basin with the sponge fingers, making sure there are no gaps. In a large bowl mix together the mascarpone, yogurt and vanilla extract with the icing sugar. Stir well to distribute everything evenly. Fill the lined basin with alternate layers of sweetened mascarpone and berries, starting with the mascarpone. Cover with the spare clingfilm and chill for at least 4 hours. Unwrap the clingfilm and carefully turn the pudding out on to a plate.

Council places Children’s Centres in safe hands Two local childcare providers have won contracts from Calderdale Council to run the Children’s Centre Service. Halifax Opportunities Trust and North Halifax Partnership were awarded the contracts after the Council invited bids to run the service through a competitive tender process. Calderdale Council’s Director of Children and Young People’s Services, Stuart Smith, said: “At a time when many areas are reducing their provision for children I am delighted and proud that the future of these Children’s Centres has been secured. “We are continuing to offer parents
and children the excellent childcare service which they have come to expect, within their local community. I am particularly pleased that two local providers have been selected to deliver both contracts.” From 1 July, Halifax Opportunities Trust will run the Central and Upper Valley Centres and are looking forward to meeting staff and service users and working together in this exciting new venture. Barbara Harbinson, CEO of Halifax Opportunities Trust said: “‘HOT’ is no stranger to the Upper Valley which makes handover less problematic. Our plan is to build on the excellent services currently

being provided, to talk with and listen to parents and to involve them in all aspects of service design and delivery.” The initial contracts are for three years, but could be extended for up to five years, depending on performance and review. Lynn Powell, Area Manager for Upper Valley Children’s Centres said; “We are working very closely with Halifax Opportunities Trust to ensure a seamless transition for staff and families, our shared aim is to continue business as usual throughout the handover ensuring we continue to deliver high quality services for children and families.”
Upper Valley Family Services Priorities
It is very important to us to understand you and your family’s needs. This helps us make decisions about the services and activities we provide and how best to use our resources to meet your needs. We have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing the feedback you have given us over the last three years, along with feedback and information from professional partners including; schools, health visitors, midwives, private and voluntary organisations, Homestart, Women’s Centre, Job Centre+ and the Family Employment Programme. We collect and analyse lots of data provided by the Government to confirm or challenge what we know about our community. From this we have identified four key priorities that we are going to focus on. Engage families; increase membership and use of our services by those most in need Reduce hospital admissions of children under five Increase support for parents with mental health issues Increase activity to promote children’s school readiness • Do you agree we are focusing on the key issues in the Upper Valley? • Do you know what we are already doing to meet these needs? • Can you think of anything else we can do to address these important issues? We will be discussing this in all of our groups and events, as well as with colleagues and partners. If you wish to give your view please speak to any member of staff or contact Julie Ratcliffe Children’s Centre Manager; telephone 01706 548140 or email julie.ratcliffe@calderdale.gov.uk

I
know your MIU from your A&E!
n the constant efforts of the NHS service to be more effective, to cut the waiting times at these ‘non-appointment’ services (and to save money), the old style A&E or ‘Casualty’ departments have been changing.
The following article is designed to clarify the options available within the local NHS for emergency or urgent care. It does not include the care you can get from the NHS GP service, Pharmacy or Dental service.
There are now three levels of urgent care departments and, depending on the problem and the seriousness of it, you need to get yourself, or the person you are responsible for, to the correct place to get the most effective care. If the problem is not life-threatening but still needs some urgent medical attention, phone NHS 111. This service operates 24/7
and will provide medical advice, including which local service will be able to offer you the best and most appropriate care.
Accident & Emergency (A&E)
Minor Injuries Unit (MIU)
Walk-In Centres (WIC)
Urgent Care Centre (UCC)
A&E services are for the very highest level or urgent or emergency care only, where a life is possibly at risk. You will need to get the patient to an A&E department or call an ambulance for paramedic care at the scene and en route to the hospital, in case such as: • loss of consciousness • acute confused state and fits that are not stopping • persistent, severe chest pain • breathing difficulties • severe bleeding that cannot be stopped Ambulances can be called by dialling 999 for the general emergency service or by dialling 112 for the ambulance service.
MIU services can address less severe injuries; those which are not life threatening. They will treat such things as: • sprains and strains • broken bones • wound infections • minor burns and scalds • minor head injuries • insect and animal bites • minor eye injuries • injuries to the back, shoulder and chest MIUs cannot treat anything that is life-threatening (see A&E) or any other medical condition that is not the result of an injury. For treatment of conditions associated with illness, pregnancy, drug or alcohol abuse or likely to require a hospital admission, etc speak to NHS 111 or see your GP.
WIC services are usually run by a nurse, though some also provide access to a doctor. They are available to everyone without an appointment and are often open 365 days a year and out of office hours. They can offer advice and treatment for minor ailments such as: • infections and rashes • blood pressure checks • fractures and lacerations • emergency contraception and advice • stomach aches • vomiting and diarrhoea • hay fever • insect and animal bites • stitches (sutures) • dressing care • minor cuts and bruises • minor burns and strains • stop smoking support
Usually run by nurses, nurse practioners and with access to doctors, these departments can treat non life-threatening walk-in injuries and ailments, which don’t require an A&E department, but cannot wait for a GP or on-call doctor’s appointment; so are essentially a combination of both MIUs and WICs services. If a patient attends the UCC and has a more serious problem they will be transferred to an A&E department.
01706 377777
NB. Services provided by MIUs, WICs and UCCs can also be provided by A&E departments.

Q I exercise regularly and occasionally I can overdo things and strain a muscle. When I do I’m never sure whether to apply heat or cold treatment. can you help clarify please?
A If used correctly following an injury or when beginning a
rehabilitation or exercise program, hot and cold can help to reduce pain, assist with tissue healing, control swelling, and increase flexibility. If used incorrectly, however, they can also worsen an injury or slow recovery times. Use caution when engaging in activities shortly after applying heat or cold since both may affect muscle and nerve performance as well as your ability to perceive pain or determine your normal limits. Cold therapy is a good treatment option for many, however, it is generally not indicated as a treatment for people with: • Impaired circulation or ischemia • Absence of skin sensitivity (anaesthesia) • Vasospasm (Raynaud’s disease) • Open or infected wound • Hypersensitivity to cold • Acute dermatitis or eczema
Heat therapy is a good treatment option for many, however, it is generally not indicated for people with: • Decreased sensation to heat • Impaired circulation • Areas of recent bleeding or severe bruising • Open wounds • Areas that are infected or ischemic • Cancer if treating the region over the tumour site • Tuberculosis if applying treatment over a lesion • Swelling or acute inflammation
They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.
Cold therapy: How and when to use it
Common cooling agents include commercial cold packs, ice baths, crushed ice compresses and cold cloths. At home a pack of frozen peas is a good alternative, but make sure you don’t eat them after! When a cooling agent is applied to the skin, blood vessels narrow and blood flow decreases, resulting in reduced swelling and inflammation. Skin temperature is also decreased, inducing an analgesic or numbing effect that plays an important role in pain management. Cold is typically applied within the first 24-48 hours of the acute stage of an injury, to prevent tissue damage, or after the first 48 hours if inflammation persists. It may also be used after an exercise program to prevent or reduce pain and swelling or to ease muscle spasms. Follow the “PRICE” protocol to manage an injury in the early stages when swelling and pain are at their peak: Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. After the initial application, cold therapy may be used periodically throughout the day for approximately 10 to 15 minutes at a time. It is important to use a damp towel between ice and the skin to increase effectiveness and decrease the risk of nerve or skin damage, which could lead to frostbite. Visually check the area of the body being treated with ice packs or other cooling agents every 5 minutes – while there may be discomfort and redness initially, treatment should be discontinued if these symptoms persist.
What about heat therapy?
Therapeutic heat is often used in the chronic phase of an injury. It may also be used prior to physiotherapy or exercise to decrease muscle tension and increase flexibility and range of motion. It also plays a role in pain management and reduction of muscle spasms, muscle tension and joint stiffness. Heat therapy should be avoided in the acute phase of an injury when swelling is present and the skin is hot to touch. Hot packs can be dry such as electric pads, hot water bottles and gel packs, or moist such as microwavable wheat bags. Hot packs dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow, delivering needed nutrients and oxygen to cells in the area being heated, aiding the removal of cell waste and promoting healing. Moist heat is preferred over dry heat since it penetrates deeper to reach muscles ligaments and joints. To create the effect of moist heat at home, first wrap a damp towel around the hot pack then cover it with a dry towel before applying it to the treatment area. No matter which type of heating agent used, several layers of towel should be used as a barrier between the skin and the hot pack to help prevent skin irritation or burns. Hot packs should be applied for 15 to 20 minutes. Visually check the skin every 5 minutes and discontinue treatment if there are abnormal changes in skin colour or you experience increased discomfort. Do not lie on a hot pack or apply heat when going to sleep since it increases the likelihood of burns resulting from close or prolonged contact with the heat source
