Jingling makes you happy!
ow often do we, as adults, just feel happy? No reason… just happy? There is so much else to focus our energy on; money, housework, juggling work with children, the list goes on!
Well Jo, from Jo Jingles, may be able to help us just laugh and play for no reason except to have fun. “Getting involved in a music & movement class with your pre-schooler is a wonderful way to bring more happiness into both yours and your child’s life. Singing to your children allows you to just focus on them and enjoy the moment. Forget the washing, work, dinner, blah, blah, blah, for just a short time and laugh, sing and play together through making music.” She goes on to tell us, “ In my experience, parents want to bring their children to a class that they can enjoy as well. It can be a lonely business being at home with a small child and coming to a class where you can share the fun
and enjoyment of music together brings genuine joy to everyone. I always want my children and the grown-ups to leave class with big smiles on their faces.” Jo Jingles are currently offering two introductory packages so now would be the perfect time to try them out. Babies (3 months – walking) get their first 3 weeks for free (no gimmicks) in the special, baby only, class. All other classes get 3 weeks for £10 so you get a week free and are not committed to a terms fee. According to recent scientific studies around Positive Psychology (the scientific study of Happiness), there are a number of keys to happier living. The research suggests that these keys consistently tend to have a positive impact on our overall happiness and well-being. A music and movement class covers quite a few of them: Learning New Things – Most of us do not suddenly have a repertoire of songs in our arsenal the minute we have a child! We have to re-learn old ones and learn new ones that the children will love.
Connecting with People – you get to meet other families at a pre-school class and could form some very strong friendships. Taking Care of your Body – a good music and movement class will encourage both you and your child to get up and get moving. A mixture of dancing and action songs will get you both exercising together while having fun.
So give the HAPPY class a go!
time to learn some basic first aid

PLAT training is a new training company recently set up by Amy, a local girl from the Upper valley.
Previously Amy was in the Outdoor Pursuits industry and was a qualified teacher but, since becoming a mother, she has found becoming self employed
and building her new business, SPLAT training, has helped with her childcare needs. Using the skills she already has, Amy is offering a variety of training courses and activities locally. She can train adults in hill skills and navigation, climbing for tots (at Todmorden Climbing Skool), farm education visits for schools at Staups Lea Farm but, above all SPLAT are offering First Aid training for adults. From workplace first aid, through paediatric first aid for schools, to the less intensive first aid for parents, grandparents and carers. Amy is a very engaging teacher and is
keen to create a “have a go” atmosphere in her basic first aid classes held at Upsy Daisies in Mytholmroyd. The sessions are very informal and you are encouraged to bring your children with you while you learn about, amongst other things, CPR and dealing with choking. Some satisfied parents have said, about Amy’s course; “The most engaging first aid course I’ve ever been on.” (Daniel) “My son poured hot water over us both. Thankfully it wasn’t quite boiling and I managed to strip him and get him in cool water very quickly. The course gave me focus, so thanks for that.” (Julie) If you are interested in any of these services please give Amy a call on 07796 872170 or visit www.splattraining.co.uk
news alice in the park
D
id you know, the amazing, surreal story of Alice in Wonderland is 150 years old this year? And a brand new production of the story will be taking place in Centre Vale Park, Todmorden, this June 8th to 13th.
Bumps and Babies Take to the Hills
L
ucy Tatam, who recently qualified as a fitness instructor, has set up the new walking group to help mums get fit without having to find childcare.
As a mother of two herself, and with another baby on the way, she realised how difficult it is for busy mums to find the time and the energy to exercise. “I used to struggle to find the motivation to get fit when I had the added complication of finding someone to look after my little ones”, says Lucy. “It usually felt like too much hassle to get myself out to a class and I wasn’t very confident about going walking on my own with the kids because I didn’t really know where to go.” However, when Lucy’s children were old enough to start school, she was introduced to fell running and has now discovered new footpaths and all the different routes that weave in and out of the valley and up and down the steep hillsides. “There is a fantastic training ground right there on our doorsteps. We are so lucky!” says Lucy. She now wants to share this knowledge and help the mums who want to get fit but are unable to organise childcare.
The walking group is loosely based on the principles of Nordic Walking, and drawing on her experience as a runner and a fitness instructor, the guided walks will be brisk and aimed at boosting fitness, building stamina, core strength, and developing good posture. The walks will set out every Tuesday and Friday morning from St George’s Square, Hebden Bridge at 9.45am and will be back around 11.15am. “It’s nice to get back in time for brunch and then people can relax and socialise together after the walk if they want to,” says Lucy. The guided walks cost £5 per adult and the group is open to women of any age, with or without babies and children. As the walks will be over mixed terrain, and fairly fast-paced, they won’t be suitable for buggies or toddling children. However, there are some spare slings and carriers available for anyone who wishes to borrow one. Lucy explains, “Don’t be put off if you have more small children than you can carry on your own! It’s worth ringing me to see who is coming that day. People who are walking without their kids are often willing to help out and I am always happy to strap a little one to my back. It helps to balance out my bump!” For any enquires, call Lucy on 07943 771739 or email: lucy@netmindz.co.uk
This is an outdoor, interactive, promenade production, performed by a professional cast of 4 actors. It includes things to watch, do and make as it moves around the park to various locations, bringing the story of Alice’s adventures to life. The show is suitable for all the family and all paths are suitable for pushchairs and wheel chairs but there is one steep path. If you are planning to see the show you should also be aware that seats are not provided, so bring a folding chair or rug, and the show will not be cancelled in the event of rain so bring a rain coat and wellies if necessary. The show begins at 5.30 in the Garden of Remembrance in the park, with a special chaperoned performance on 10th June so the kids don’t need to miss out even if the adults can’t make it. Tickets available at Todmorden Tourist Information centre - 01706 818181 or from the website - www. storymagictheatre.co.uk. They cost £10 for adults and £6 for children. This is a fully professional production, performed by In The Park Productions, supported by The Arts Council.

page out &header about Brockholes Nature Reserve
F
inding activities to do and places to visit always seem harder during the February Half-term. It’s always weather - and light - dependent! Days can still seem very short as darkness and night-time is upon us before we are leaving the house.
We thought we would try Brockholes Nature Reserve for a morning excursion. Armed with plenty of warm layers of clothing (plus spares for muddy accidents) and an essential flask of hot chocolate plus (healthy and unhealthy) snacks, we set off. We tend to get to places early, to avoid the crowds, however I couldn’t believe how quick it was to get there, so we were one of the first families there. It took less than an hour to drive as it’s situated just at the side of the M6 motorway within a mile of Junction 31. It’s very well signposted and easy to find. Brockholes is regarded as one of the best sites in the UK to observe many species of bird and boasts one of the largest strips of ancient woodland in the country. It is managed by the Wildlife
Trust for Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside, who are part of the Wildlife Trusts, the UK’s leading conservation charity. Since opening in 2011, it has played host to over 200,000 visitors; the sightseers are growing as Brockholes becomes an increasingly diverse nature reserve, with a wider (and ever growing) variety of wildlife. There is no charge for entrance, however you do have to pay for parking (which is a reasonable fee). A camera records your car registration number as you enter the Nature Reserve and before you leave you must pay what is due at one of the many pay machines. Beware; if you do not, a formal parking fine notice of £50.00 will be issued. A possible benefit of visiting Brockholes (which may be a disadvantage for some) is that no dogs are allowed, as dogs can disturb the wildlife there, especially nesting birds. All walks and trails begin from the floating Visitor Village, which features a café, an interactive Welcome Centre (the place to collect your Welcome leaflet and Reserve map) and of course a gift shop. As Brockholes is run as a not-for-profit organisation, any profits made are ploughed back into helping look after and further develop the Reserve and protect the wildlife that visits there. They also have various events happening throughout the holidays, so it’s well worth keeping an eye on, as I understand that the events get booked up quickly. There are a number of walking trails to choose from, including the Gravel Pit path (approximately 30 minutes to walk), which is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs
(plus good for younger ones with little legs). There is also a Meadow Trail and a complete Reserve Trail, estimated to take approximately 2 hours. We chose the Meadow Trail (about 1 hours walking) as this cleverly encompasses a good sized play area and equipment for children of all ages. (Including the always popular zip-wire and assault course)! There are lots of picnic tables and benches scattered around, this allows you to walk or amble and enjoy the experience at your own family’s pace. Also, I would say, that although it was a nippy February morning, I think it would be windy and chilly throughout most times or the year; as the land is so open to the elements. The floating Visitor Village is a great place to explore but, as it floats on water, you will need to keep an extra beady eye on the little ones. The two hours we spent there went so fast for us we are planning on going again at Easter time or when the sun is shining. We’d love to see more wildlife and to fully explore the Reserve, so I think that Brockholes is going to become a firm holiday-time favourite. We just have to always remember our gloves! Diggerland
T
Willowbridge Lane, Whitwood, Castleford, West Yorkshire WF10 5NW www.diggerland.com
he first Diggerland opened in the UK in Kent in 2000. The idea came about after the Chairman of the largest digging construction machinery hire service company in Europe, H. E. Services, held a Family Open Day and saw the delight the children got by simply sitting in the cabs of these huge ‘toys’. That remains the core principal of Diggerland today; it’s not a fancy theme-park, it’s just fun with diggers and other bits of construction machinery. There are four Diggerland’s in the UK, in Devon, Kent, Durham and our local one is in Castleford in West Yorkshire. We actually visited the Durham one whilst on holiday but I expect they are all very similar. I would suggest the age range of children who will get the most out of Diggerland is 5 to about 12 years. Entrance to the various ‘rides’ (or more accurately, in most cases, ‘experiences’) is limited by height. Any child under 90cm won’t be allowed on anything on their own, and only a few things with the help of an adult, but they are not charged an entrance fee. The ‘rides’ consist of lots of little diggers with various attachments so you can try your hand at digging holes, hooking ducks, knocking over skittles, etc. There are also
various machines that can be driven around courses - dumper trucks, mini landrovers and ‘robots’. There are bigger machines you can ride in - land trains and JCBs, and there is even a full sized, four wheel drive car that children under 17 can have a go at driving for real. There is also a JCB ride where you are spun around while strapped into the bucket! Not for me, that one, but my daughter loved it!
Diggerland is not big. We spent about 4 hours there and did everything we wanted to. If you visit on a busy day expect more queuing, but you should be able to get around everything you want to see. Also, be aware that most of the activities are outdoors. If it is raining or has been raining recently, it will be muddy. A change of footwear may be required. There is a soft play area indoors, along with a very basic (and slightly overpriced) cafe. Outdoor picnic areas are available. If you pay for entrance on the day, it can be quite expensive for a family. Each person between 90cm high and 65 years of age pays £19.95. Over 65s pay £9.95. On-the-day Family tickets are also available. However, if you can plan in advance, tickets can be pre-booked on the website for a discount.
family matters Understanding the
Early Years Foundation Stage
T
he Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a protocol, the early years equivalent to a curriculum, followed by all schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes. It aims to set standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old such that parents can be assured that, no matter where they choose to send their child for early education, the setting is following the same core document and providing the same statutory commitments and principles that will underpin their child’s learning and development experience. As part of this protocol your child will be assessed in key areas sometime between their second and third birthday and again when they turn five, so an EYFS profile can be produced for each child. These assessments are not ‘tests’ as such; they are conducted by a qualified member of staff, by observing how your child plays and interacts.
So, what is covered by the EYFS?
It sets out: • The legal welfare requirements that everyone registered to look after children must follow to keep your child safe and promote their welfare. • The 7 areas of learning and development which guide professionals’ engagement with your child’s play and activities as they learn new skills and knowledge • Assessments that will tell parents about their child’s progress • Expected levels that your child should reach at age 5, usually the end of the reception year. These expectations are called the “Early Learning Goals (ELGs)”
10
The seven areas of learning
These are split into three ‘prime’ and four ‘specific’ areas. The prime areas of development should come first and need to be in place before the specific areas can develop fully. The prime areas are: • Communication and language • Physical development • Personal, social and emotional development The specific areas are: • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the world • Expressive arts and design The assessment your child receives when they are aged two will be a progress check covering the prime areas only. It will highlight areas where your child is doing well or other areas where they may need some extra help. Use this information to help you work with your child and their key worker to improve these core skills. You may also find it useful to share this information with health visitors or other professionals who see your child regularly, as well as other family members who may have some childcare responsibility. For specific ideas about how to help your child reach their goals, speak to your child’s key worker, childminder or visit www. foundationyears.org.uk The assessment your child receives when they are five, towards the end of the foundation year, is called the EYFS Profile and will then be used by the year 1 teacher to plan those early school lessons, by highlighting the area of strengths, weaknesses, skills and enjoyment for each child. For more details and downloadable resources to guide you through the EYFS, visit www.foundationyears.org.uk or www.early-education.org.uk or speak to staff at your Children’s Centre.

summer challenge help to set a Guinness World Record title this summer
L
ibraries across Calderdale and the rest of the UK are getting ready to encourage young readers to explore some of the astonishing real-life achievements and world records as featured in the Guinness World Records Books as part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2015. Organsied by The Reading Agency charity and the public library network, the annual Summer Reading Challenge, aimed at 4 - 11 year olds and their families, is simple and fun. Children are encouraged to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards plus a certificate, or medal, for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library at the start of the summer holidays – it’s absolutely free - and pre-schoolers can take part in the mini-Challenge. Every year there is a new theme and this year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records - the global authority in record-breaking achievements and publisher of the annual Guinness World Records ™book – to establish a “Record Breakers” themed Challenge. Record Breakers brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and world records. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover the weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Parents and carers love the challenge; not only is it free but they can see the difference the Summer Reading Challenge makes to their children’s reading. Last year, over 800,000 children took part, nearly half of them boys! Mason, from Stockport, wrote: “I loved the stickers and the chart and the funny characters.”
Setting a new World Record
As part of this year’s Challenge, children, parents, carers, young volunteers, teachers, much-loved children’s authors and important figures in communities around the UK will be asked to make a pledge to help us set a new Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Pledges Received for a Reading Campaign! Libraries are collecting pledges between Friday 10 and Monday 13 July – check with your local library to find out when you can submit your pledge. A minimum of 100,000 pledges across the UK are needed to set the record. The official launch date of the Summer Reading Challenge is Saturday 11 July and it will run until Saturday 5th September.
HELPFUL HINTS Here are some ideas to help your child finish the Challenge. • Visit the library as often as you can. There are all kinds of events going on, and children soon get caught up in the fun • Read yourself! Don’t feel guilty about sitting down with a book, newspaper or magazine. It sets a good example to kids – and they will copy you! • Let children choose their own books. If they don’t like a book, just move on to the next one, or ask one of the library staff to recommend a read • Children don’t just have to read stories or novels. Fact books, audio books, poetry – they all count! On days you can’t get to the library, there is still the Record Breakers website. It has so much for children to discover and they can keep a record of their Challenge too. Children can also recommend books and decide what to read next using the Book Sorter.
For more information on the Summer Reading Challenge including how to get involved and resources for schools, go to www.readingagency.org. uk/summerreadingchallenge What’s more, teachers can often tell which children have taken part; research shows that children who take part in the Challenge return to school after the summer break as more fluent, confident and happy readers. “This is a fantastic initiative. We do this every year.” Parent, Southend-onSea
For busy parents, getting back into the habit of using the library as a family throughout the year can be triggered by taking part: “The Challenge meant that trips to the library became part of our planned summer holiday together as a family.” Parent, Oban, Scotland

Running? It’s the parkrun Spirit!
E
veryone knows that running is free; you can do it anywhere, and it burns more calories than any other mainstream exercise. The health benefits of regular running can help reduce your risk of chronic illnesses, such Mia Howorth in her 10 Park Runs as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. It can also t-shirt having just finish ed the run boost your mood and keep your weight under control. It’s not at Towneley Park. surprising that running is the latest fitness craze.

If you like running, you may have already heard by now of the growing free running event organised by Parkrun. Started over ten years ago by Paul Sinton-Hewitt and a few friends, it now attracts 80,000 people, meeting at 9.00am each Saturday, in 280 parks nationwide. They organise regular junior events too. We thought we would find out more. When Paul Sinton-Hewitt first started the Bushy Park Time Trial (which would later become Bushy Parkrun) back in 2004, he did not expect that there could be any other events in the UK, let alone around the world. Parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation that helps to establish and manage, weekly, 5km timed runs. The events are open to anyone; they are safe and free to take part in. The weekly runs take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and people of all ability are encouraged to take part, from those taking their first steps in running, to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; all are welcome. Another aim of Parkrun is to have an event in every community that wants one and they are more than happy to work with people who want to set up and manage an event. The local Parkruns for our area are
held at Towneley Park, Burnley or Shroggs Park, Lee Mount Rd, Halifax and they are organised and managed entirely by volunteers. It isn’t just for adults either. For children aged between 4 and 14 there are a series of 2km runs.
So what happens?
It is a 5km (or 2km) run, not a race you simply run against the clock. People of all ages join in and run for their own enjoyment, whatever their pace.
What does it cost to join in?
Nothing - it’s free! However, you must register at least once with Parkrun through their website and then remember to take a printed copy of your personal barcode number with you; without it you will not get an official time.
What do I have to wear?
There is no dress code, no race numbers and no need for expensive equipment. We spoke to someone who does it. Mia Howorth, age 9, has been running with Parkrun for two years. She usually takes part in the 5km run at Towneley Park in Burnley on a Saturday morning. Her first run took 39 minutes but one of the benefits of regular running is improving your time and she can now
complete this distance in 32 minutes. Mia likes the fact that she completes the run on Saturday morning and still has the rest of the day free for other activities. She also likes being able to look at her Personal Profile on the Parkrun website. This records her times, including her personal best, gender position in her age group of runners and the number of runs she has completed. Mia’s Mum, Barbara, speaks highly of Parkrun. Her first comment was how safe the runs are and how well organised they are. Every child under the age of 11 has to have an adult accompany them on the run and the course is marshalled well. Barbara says that Mia has been motivated by the “milestone” t-shirts and enjoys the fun of running with friends in a non-pressured event. If running is for you and your family, then the weekly organised Parkruns will no doubt be an opportunity for you all to spend some quality time together, whether running or volunteering to help. The focus of Parkrun is definitely on fun, enjoyment and friendship. By T Sunderland & J Boon

Bloke page in a Kitchen header Gingered and Minty Fruit Salad By Richard Dalby
O
ne of the joys of Summer is the tucking into some cool refreshing fruit on a scorching hot day. Fruit salads are a great way of making a dessert with very little effort and, by being a little bit creative with the syrup, you can transform this old favourite into something a bit special. The recipe below is just a template really. Feel free to add as many different fruits as you wish and make it really explode with colour. Try out your own ideas and create your own unique syrup flavours. Perhaps add some orange/lemon juice, or try adding some lemongrass stalks to the syrup for its unique zesty flavour. My personal favourite is a South-East Asian style syrup made with fresh ginger, fresh chilli, a heap of sugar and serving icy cold – it’s amazing.
Ingredients 150ml water 90g caster sugar 3cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped Small handful of fresh mint leaves (removed from stalk) Juice of half a lime 1 melon Fresh fruit of your choice (such as blueberries, peaches, strawberries, kiwi fruit, apples, grapes)

Put the water and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Stir well and let it boil merrily for 5 minutes to make a slightly thickened syrup. Meanwhile roughly chop the ginger and mint. Once your syrup is made, squeeze in the lime juice. Put the ginger and mint in a small bowl and pour the liquid over them. Allow to cool. Now prepare your fruit. Chop the fruit into bite-size pieces and put in a large bowl. Melon is the perfect base for any fruit salad as it absorbs the flavours of the syrup beautifully. Ginger brings out the very best of it. Add your other fruit as desired. Place a sieve over the bowl of fruit and pour in the gingery mint syrup. Discard the mint and ginger. Mix well and allow to chill in the fridge for an hour to allow the flavour to marinate the fruit. Serve chilled

Note: It’s best not to add banana as they tend to brown and go too squidgy, unless you add them when serving. Likewise, very soft fruit like raspberries are also best added immediately before serving.

Q I’m six months pregnant with
my second child and recently I am getting so much pain in my groin and hip area that I have to take stairs one at a time and somedays I can’t pick up my toddler at all. I struggle to move around in bed due to the pain and getting in and out of the car is really painful. I’m reaching the end of my tether what can I do?
A As a Chartered Physiotherapist
with a special interest in pelvis and spine problems I treat many women who have pelvic pain during pregnancy but suffer in silence because they don’t want to take medication that might harm their baby. Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) used to be called Symphasis Pubis Dysfunction and can occur any time during or after pregnancy and affects one in four pregnant and postnatal women. They present with a wide range of symptoms and the severity can vary widely however PGP is a common and, in most cases, easily treatable condition. It can be treated very effectively at any stage during or after pregnancy by a Chartered Physiotherapist specialising in Pelvic dysfunction. Although women are often told that PGP is caused by hormones, up to date research shows that it is usually caused by a pelvic joint problem. The pelvis is made up of a ring of three bones. They join at the Sacro-iliac joints (the dimple joints at the back above your bottom) and the Symphasis Pubis at the front. Normally these joints move a little to allow you to walk, turn over in bed and climb the stairs. In PGP one joint becomes stiff and stops moving normally and then the other joints have to compensate. As a result muscles may also be tight and painful. Often the joint causing the problem is not particularly painful so treating
the painful points doesn’t treat the underlying problem. By treating the stiff joint an experienced Physiotherapist can help the joints to function normally again and allow the irritation at the painful joint to settle. It is increasingly recognised that PGP can also have a big impact on how you feel emotionally because coping with the physical challenges of daily life can be difficult leaving you feeling low and isolated. One of the problems is there is nothing to see with PGP - you’re not wearing a plaster cast and the pain isn’t visible to others. Women often feel cheated as they expect to be blooming and enjoying their pregnancy but, in fact, are struggling because they are experiencing pain that no-one can see. This is even worse in second and subsequent pregnancies as you are also having to care for at least one other child or toddler! PGP can usually be treated effectively by a ‘hands-on’ manual therapist like myself. It really is treatable at any stage of pregnancy, or postnatally, as soon as you feel able to leave the house and your new baby for an hour. An individual assessment is very important to look at the position and symmetry of movement in your

pelvic joints to find out which joints are causing the problem. I use my hands to gently reposition the pelvis and free up the stiff joint and I can do this with you lying on your back or on your side - whichever is easier for you. I will also teach you exercises to support the pelvis and prevent the problem recurring; you should walk out of each treatment feeling some improvement in either pain or function and preferably both. When I treat anyone I always write to the GP, with the patients permission, and during pregnancy we liaise with your Midwife too. Lynne Midwinter
If you would like to book an appointment to see me about any Pelvic or Spine pain problem - either during pregnancy or at any other time in your life please contact our reception team on 01706 819464.
There are varying approaches to PGP, but the main things you should expect from your therapist are: • The therapist will ask you about your PGP and how it affects you. • They will ask you to undress down to your underwear. • They will look at and feel how the joints at the back and the front of your pelvis move when you move (e.g. standing on one leg, bending forwards etc.) • They will feel how symmetrically the joints move when you are lying down on your back and your front (or on your side it you are very pregnant) • They will discuss their findings and agree a treatment plan with you, explaining what they are going to do • Treatment is likely to include realigning joints so they move symmetrically again. This may need to be done a few times until your muscles become strong enough to keep them in place without treatment. • You should be given gentle exercises to help your pelvic stability and, as you recover, the exercise programme will be adapted to suit your individual needs until you get back to normal.
