A
pril Greaves is a new mum, recently moved to the area, who is offering a range of new yoga classes, especially for those searching for a more conscious experience of pregnancy.
April has a background in psychology but gave up her corporate job four years ago to pursue her love of yoga full time. “I’ve never been happier,” she tell us. “Teaching pregnant women and new mums with their babies is the biggest passion in my life, aside from my own family. “From my own experience, pregnancy is the most beautiful and transformational time in a woman’s life.
T
As your body prepares for the birth of your baby, it is vital to nourish every cell in your body to make sure you and your baby are at optimum health and wellbeing. Conscious Pregnancy Yoga is designed to do exactly this, as well as help you become more centered and connected to the life developing inside.” April also aims to address pregnancy fear through yoga. She explains; “The fear arises through uncertainty, negative symptoms, being told you’re ‘high risk’, previous birth traumas, etc. I experienced fear myself after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition during my pregnancy. I was also classed as being ‘high risk’ after numerous visits to the hospital for unexplained bleeds. I found that my yoga practice became my healing tool to cultivate love and peace over fear and anxiety.” April’s classes incorporate breathing and relaxation techniques with postures to promote muscle tone, strength, balance and circulation. “By choosing this state of calm during pregnancy and beyond, new mothers can welcome their children into this world in the most nurturing and peaceful way.” April says. Classes are currently at the Birchcliffe

01706 814554 R www.robinwood.co.uk It’s now a year since Halifax Parkrun got going at Shroggs Park, with an average of over 100 people taking part every week. To build on this, plans are afoot for new runs in Brighouse and Todmorden. Parkrun is a fun way to enjoy exercising outdoors with like-minded people. The free 5km timed leisure run is open to people of all ages, abilities and experience. Calderdale Council is keen to promote this as part of its aim to get people moving more and help Calderdale become the most active borough in the north of England. Runs take place every week but people can take part as often as they want and at their own pace. Events are free to attend and runners simply register online in advance and print out a barcode, which they present on the day of the run, to find out their running time. People who could take on the role of Parkrun Event Director at each venue are being urged to come forward. They would be responsible for managing their allocated Parkrun and working with volunteers and marshals on a Saturday morning.

clay workshops for all
T
he boxing day floods flushed her job away but, not downhearted, Susy Thomas saw this as a new start and decided to turn her hobby into a business.
She now runs a small pottery company bringing clay workshops for adults and children to Todmorden and the surrounding area. “I have a workshop and kiln in Todmorden and run various creative sessions.” Susy told us, “Currently I run Paint-a-Pot at Seventy Two Cafe on Sundays, 12 - 3pm and a Mums and Tots Hand print and play session Tuesdays 11 - 1pm.” Look out for her pottery workshops at Ladyfest, Todmorden (22nd - 26th) June and Todmorden town’s show on the 18th June. When not doing that, Susy works as a Carer. On spare days she is a stilt walker for a local circus company “Chicks on Sticks” and runs workshops
for Joevanka Gregory at Creative with Nature. If you are interested in having a pottery experience at your special event please contact Susy.

his year, on Sunday 26th June, Hebden Bridge will host the 9th Handmade Parade, through the streets of the town and onto the park. This year the annual celebration of funkiness will mark the opening of the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival and will also be part of the Yorkshire Festival. As everyone who has ever taken part in the parade knows, all the magic happens in the weeks leading up to the event. Anyone who wants to be part of the parade can make costumes or carryable art, or help create huge puppets, with the help of local professional carnival artists, volunteers and guest artists. There is also an opportunity for older children and adults to become members of the Handmade Samba band or learn to stilt-walk in the parade.

Lasers in Walsden
aser parties have been a favourite with all kids for years now, but they have usually involved a long trip to a purpose built centre that offers the experience. Well, no more. At Maxwell’s Fun House, in Walsden, work has been going on to fit blackout blinds and make the party room completely dark so more fun can be had with the Begeara Laser Parties. The Begeara system is a phasor only system so there are no heavy vests to
wear, meaning more manoeuvrability and more fun around the play frames. It is so simple to use, everyone can have fun straight away. The Begeara parties can be booked for any children aged 5 or older. There is a maximum of 12 children that can be accommodated but they will all get three 15 minute games of the laser tag, pizza, chips and a slush; a total of 11/2 hours of fun, all for just £150.

Greater Manchester Police Museum 57a Newton Street, Manchester M1 1ET 0161 856 3287 gmpmuseum.co.uk
I
I came upon the existence of the Greater Manchester Police Museum quite by chance and what a find! A real hidden gem situated in the Northern Quarter of Manchester and only 10 minutes from Piccadilly Gardens. This Museum was one of the city’s earliest police stations and has been sympathetically restored to reflect the reality of Victorian policing in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. Be warned: the Museum is only open Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school holidays, and, Tuesdays only during regular term-time 10.30 – 3.30. There is no entry charge (although donations are gratefully accepted). It’s run largely by volunteers, the majority of whom were once police officers. As soon as we arrived at the building, we were greeted by a Victorian policeman who ‘checked’ how well behaved my tribe were and gave us a useful explanation of how to get the best out of the visit. It’s not a huge museum at all but there is a lot packed in here. There are exhibits dating back to when the police force was first formed to the community safety officers that we see today. There is such a variety of exhibits; everything from
confiscated street weapons, handcuffs, old police cars and motorcycles, even cast iron riot gates. A really interesting display was about serving police officers during WW1. On the day we attended there was a visit from serving officers from the Tactical Firearms Unit, who brought some of their equipment along for visitors to examine and find out more about. Another caveat, as these Officers are ‘operational’, advertised events may be cancelled last minute or curtailed in light of them being ‘needed elsewhere’. Mixed in with all this ‘serious’ history, there was a good variety of ‘hands on’ exhibits, such as trying on police hats and uniforms and sitting in a police car. There are original cells and the Charge Office to investigate, even a reconstructed courtroom (taken from a police station in Denton) so your own sweet cherubs can ‘stand trial’ in the Dock or be locked in a cell. Brilliant! Best of all, the staff and volunteers on hand really help bring it all to life; they are really enthusiastic and, being former officers, obviously very knowledgeable. They really seemed to enjoy engaging with the children and talking in great detail about the displays. They are a real
credit to this venue. It was having that mix of former and still-serving officers that made the Museum a fantastic place to visit. We spent nearly two hours there, which is a long time to keep my 6, 9 and 10 year old, entertained. I thoroughly enjoyed it too; I could have easily spent longer there learning more about the gruesome facts of some of their former ‘guests’. Obviously, there is a shop to negotiate before the exit door at the end of the visit, however everything seemed reasonably priced. For pocket money recipients there is an opportunity to get something memorable for not too much. (Who doesn’t want their own finger-print key ring)? There is something to interest everyone at this Museum; my children are still talking about it, a sign of high praise indeed. All in all, it was an excellent way to spend a couple of hours. Mission accomplished! By Tracey Sunderland

t’s hard to find a place to visit that is special enough to be called a treat, that’s within a reasonable travelling distance, that’s not going to break the bank; but will also entertain and be of interest to three very different youngsters. The pressure to achieve this near-impossible task is mine to bear on a regular basis during school holidays. I am sure many of you share the same mission.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park
West Bretton, Wakefield WF4 4LG www.ysp.co.uk 01924 832631
I
really wanted to see the commemorative poppy display at the Tower of London last year but just didn’t manage it. I then heard that part of the ceramic poppy display was on tour and could be seen at the Yorkshire Sculpture Trial in Wakefield. Again, I could not get my act together to get to see them in the four months that they were on display.
Therefore, when our Easter school holidays fell out of step with Yorkshire (and the rest of the country), I decided that it was an opportunity not to be missed. There would be no better time to visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) while almost all primary school children would be back at their desks! YSP was opened to the public in 1977, in a bid to create an open area with a balanced mix of art, heritage, space and landscape. The Park has been massively successful; it’s now 500 acres in size with 60+ outdoor works to view, 5 indoor galleries to explore and boosts a contribution of £5 million to the local economy. The place is simply unique. Basically, it’s a fantastic opportunity to experience modern and contemporary art in an outdoor setting. There is nowhere else like it in England. YSP tries hard to be a very family-friendly place; children can run round in the open air, the sculptures can be touched, there are various walks and trials to follow, plentiful picnic areas and good toilets and baby-changing facilities. Above all, it’s free! Only one note of caution: ball games and climbing trees are forbidden. The Park is open almost all year round from 10.00am until 5.00pm. Driving from Rossendale, it took just over an hour to get there and we arrived about 11.00. However, even though there are over 1000 spaces and it was a school-day in Yorkshire, the car parks were busy. Be warned, if you are thinking of going during the summer holidays, get there early! Once the car parks are full (there are three), they are closed and new visitors are turned away. Whilst YSP is free to visit, there is an £8.00 daily fee to park the car. There is a lesser charge for a shorter, limited time but, since we had travelled a fair distance, we aimed to stay for the day. Please note, the parking charge can be paid on the
day or 7 days later online. CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras read vehicle number plates on arrival at each of the car parks and you will be fined if you do not pay. You have been warned! Once we had donned our walking boots (it’s a hilly park with areas that get very muddy after a few days of rain), sorted out the parking charge and visited the toilet facilities, we were finally ready to explore.
We found a very helpful lady at the main Reception desk who gave us a map, asked us what we wanted to see and do, and then proceeded to devise a bespoke walking trail for us. Very helpful indeed! Straight away we were impressed with the setting; beautiful grounds, views of an old stately home with wooded areas, a lake and then lots and lots of different sculptures dotted around, in many varied styles. Now, I do not profess to know anything about modern art and sculpture, and my children, as yet, have not been to an art gallery. I have always thought them just too young to be really interested, however the YSP was a great way of introducing them to various styles of artwork in such a relaxed and informal way. When we went, there was an exhibition by the American artist KAWS, who has created some enormous towering and imposing pieces made from fibreglass and wood.
We saw classic sculptures created by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Joan Miró, in addition to site-specific commissioned ones by David Nash and Hemali Bhuta. It was all very interesting, if not a little weird at times and, whilst we had little or no previous knowledge about the pieces we were looking at, or about the artist themselves, it did generate some fantastic conversation in our family group (the handy information boards did enlighten us somewhat). There is a lot to see; after nearly four hours of walking and running around a hilly park, my six year-old’s legs finally ran out of energy, so we missed some exhibits and areas of interest, including walking in the woods by the river. There is a café and shop on site however, it was quite expensive so, if you are on a budget, consider taking a picnic. Also, although we saw families with young children manage push chairs in the park, it needs to be dry weather for the experience to be easy going. I still wish we could have been more organised as a family and visited sooner to see the poppy display; however, on the day we went to YSP there were many different artworks to see, pieces to explore and, importantly, new things talk about. What better way to spend a family day out! By Tracey Sunderland

Family matters The Child Car seat law and what’s changing
Y
ou may have recently seen, in magazines or on social media, notices about new child car seat laws. We wanted to get to the bottom of this and set out the facts as they stand.
In 2006 new laws concerning the use of car seats for children in the UK were brought in. These mainly concerned fitting the correct seat based on the child’s weight. In July 2013 new EU safety standards for child car seats were introduced, called i-size. These came into force as UK legislation at the end of March 2015. It is important to note, however, that, at the moment, these new rules don’t replace the 2006 rules; they run alongside them. In other words, parents do NOT have to replace existing car seats. As long as your child seats comply with one or other of the rules, they are legal and considered safe. The old regulations will eventually be phased out as the new seats become more common but, at the moment, the new rules are still undergoing development and may well change as they are phased in. So don’t panic.
There are a few key differences to the new i-size system which we will try and explain here. 1. The new i-size seats will all be designed to be fixed to cars using the ISOfix system. This system connects the seat directly with the car frame via a set of fixings fitted by the car manufacturer. It is safer, much more secure and much easier to use correctly than the old seatbelt fastening systems. Most cars made since 2006 have a two point ISOfix system fitted (at the base of the seatbelts) but the new children’s car seats will work on a three point system; the third point is sometimes called a top tether. These three point fixings are now being fitted to new cars. If you have an older car you will need to check that any new car seats you buy will work on a two point ISOfix system or even with just a normal seat belt if that is all you have in your car. You do not need to buy a new car! . The i-size seat that is right for your baby/child will be based on its height rather than its weight. It has been
assumed that parents know their child’s height more than their weight so will have a better idea of when is the right time to move up a seat size. . Babies and small children using the i-size system of seats must be rear-facing until they are over 15 months old. Your child can use a forward-facing i-size car seat only when they’re over 15 months old. The 2006 law stated babies must be in rear-facing seats only until they are at least 9Kg in weight (roughly about 9 months old). However, while it may be tempting to turn your baby around as soon as possible, so they can see more of the world go by when in the car, we should point out that the new guidelines are being introduced in the interest of safety. There is a lot of evidence that suggests it is safer to keep a baby rear-facing until it is older, bigger and physically better able to withstand the forces of a front collision. 4. There will be no i-size booster cushions. All forward facing i-size booster seats will have a back.
NOTES on the law - these apply no matter what type of seat you have; • Children must normally use a child car seat until they’re 12 years old or 135cm tall, whichever comes first. • It is illegal to put a baby in rear-facing seat in the front passenger seat if an airbag is fitted and operational. If you want your baby to travel next to you as you drive, you must deactivate the airbag. • It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure all children under the age of 14 are in suitable seats or using the correct restraint. If they are not, the driver can be fined up to £500. If the passenger is 14 or older, any fine is the responsibility of the passenger. The only exception to this is in minibuses or coaches, where it is the parent’s/carer’s responsibility to check and provide a seat if necessary.
16
• Children under 3 must use a suitable car seat. If they are not available or the car is not fitted with seat belts or fixing points of any kind, the child can’t travel. • The only exception to the car seat rules occurs in a licensed taxi or minicab with a fixed partition that separates the front and rear seats: ••children under 3 can travel without a child’s car seat or seat belt, but only on a rear seat ••children aged 3 or older can travel in a front or rear seat without a child’s car seat if they wear an adult seat belt You must follow the normal rules for using a child car seat or booster seat if the vehicle doesn’t have a fixed partition.
Bloke in a Kitchen Pistachio and Cardamom Kulfi By Richard Dalby

f you’ve never had a go at making your own ice cream, this recipe for a beautiful Kulfi (Indian Ice Cream) is a great place to start. It’s so easy and delicious; you don’t need any special ice-cream making equipment, you don’t even have to endlessly stir up the ice crystals during freezing and the finished result is nothing less than sublime.
Once you’ve given this a go, try out some other recipes for home-made ice creams – so much tastier and satisfying than anything in the shops.
Ingredients • • • • • • • •
75ml / 3 fl oz boiling water 4 cardamom pods – crushed, with the seeds removed and reserved. 425g / 14oz can sweetened condensed milk 75ml / 3 fl oz cold water 30g / 1 oz unsalted pistachio nuts 30g / 1 oz blanched almonds 2 drops almond essence (optional) 150ml / ¼ pint of double cream
Method 1. .
. 4. 5. 6.
7.
Pour the boiling water into a bowl, stir in the cardamom seeds and leave for 15 minutes to infuse. Meanwhile, put the condensed milk into a blender or food processor, together with the cold water, pistachio nuts, almonds and almond essence. Process the mixture for about 30 seconds until the nuts are very finely chopped then turn out into a large bowl. Strain the cardamom infusion to remove the seeds and add the cooled, flavoured water to the mixture. Whip the cream until soft peaks form then add this to the mixture and mix well. Pour into a shallow metal, or plastic, container and freeze for about 3 hours, until semi-frozen around the edges and mushy in the centre. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and mash well with a fork (to break up the ice crystals). Divide the mixture evenly between 6-8 small moulds/ramekins* and freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight until firm. To serve, dip the base of each mould quickly into hot water and run a knife around the top edge. Turn out on to serving plate.
Note: *If you don’t have moulds or ramekins, no problem, just prepare the mixture in an ice cream tub sized container.

feature Multi-sensory and Whole Body Learning By Nancy White
I
’m sure most of us remember sitting at school staring out of the window, letting our mind wander, as some boring teacher talked on and on! Today learning at school shouldn’t be like this, though the vast amount the curriculum now expects teachers to cover, can mean teachers struggle to find time to get creative. As human beings we are naturally designed to learn through our senses, we learn through doing and seeing, tasting and touching, as well as listening. We learn from the adults around us, who show us how things are done, then we have a go. In the past this learning would have been based around a job or role for example: baking, being a housemaid, a stable hand or blacksmith. This is what can be described as ‘whole body learning’. Skills such as maths and writing would have been gained (though possibly not to modern standards or indeed equally amongst young people!), skills such as reading numbers, recording information or calculating amounts. This is why some children and young adults struggle in a school setting and lose confidence in their ability to learn. The learning is too two dimensional, often based around listening, seeing and doing but without stimulating the whole body. This is why some children and young people can respond so positively to opportunities to learn away from the conventional classroom in place like Care Farms (http://www. carefarminguk.org/), where they have the chance to learn through doing, applying and improving on skills they’ve learnt in the classroom as well as gaining new ones.
20
Now I’m not suggesting that today all children should be apprenticed at a young age to learn the skills of work but what I am suggesting is that our natural way of learning is based in using all the senses not just through listening and looking. Multi-sensory learning can be applied in the classroom, at home or in tuition. For example: • if a child struggles with hand writing, put the pen away and get them to develop their fine motor skills through creating shapes with play dough using their writing/ tripod fingers, or by controlling a tennis ball, or even chop sticks! • if a child gets stressed when attempting certain topics, create a relaxing environment through the senses, introduce a mix of aromatherapy oils such as lavender with lemon, or allow a family pet in to the room. Dr Deborah Well’s research shows that pet ownership or the presence of pets can greatly reduce stress and have positive effect on concentration (Wells, D.L. (2007). Domestic dogs and human health: an overview. British Journal of Health Psychology12, 145-156). • if a child struggles with learning spellings entice creative senses through using pictures to remember spellings that are similar or use their feet to create word shapes. It may feel odd or even counter-intuitive but multi-sensory and whole body learning techniques can engage learners and build their confidence. Nancy lives and works in Walsden. She is a private tutor and qualified teacher. She has taught children and adults since 1997. Over the last 5 years she has specialised in One to One teaching and developed ways of helping struggling learners make progress. Many of her methods are developed as a result of her work with dyslexic pupils.

The ‘Me Pig’ series is pitched perfectly for young readers in the popular diary format and we’ve had lots of young customers report how much they love this series. Finally ‘The Last Wild’ series by Piers Torbay is a captivating animal adventure for older children.

family page header health
Q My son has just gone up to high
school and now has a very heavy bag to carry around all day. Are there any things we should be aware of to stop him causing any problems for himself in the future?
A Choosing the right bag is a bigger
issue than many parents and children realise and you are right to be concerned. Research published in the Scientific Journal ‘Spine’ in 2007 stated that “Lower back pain occurrence was not associated with the types or dimensions of the school furniture or body dimensions, but was positively associated with carrying the school bag on one shoulder.” More research carried out by Helen Behrens, a nurse and lecturer, has shown that 30% of children carry schoolbags weighing over 10% of their bodyweight. This places unnecessary stress on the growing adolescent spine that, later in life, could be the cause of back pain. Added to this, most children would much rather spend the evening sitting still or, even worse, slouching in front of their computer or television rather than moving and stretching and letting off steam in an active sport or leisure pursuit.
Physio & Therapies in Todmorden offers treatments for a wide range of family health issues. If you have any questions, queries or concerns you would like to ask an expert about please get in touch by any of the methods shown on page 3.
They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.
Currently two in five adults in the UK report back pain and trends are showing that these figures will only rise as the current generation of already unfit children become adults. So what can be done to prevent this escalating problem? Make a start by ensuring that your child uses a good quality back pack type of school bag and wears it correctly, over both shoulders at all times. Carrying a heavy bag over one shoulder puts your child at significant risk of back injury, the result of which may stay with them for life. BackCare, the National charity for back pain research, has worked closely with ergonomists to design a suitable bag. For more details or to buy one of these recommended backpacks, visit www. backcare.org.uk Contact your child’s head teacher • to ask if lockers are provided so children are not obliged to carry all their heavy books at all times. If they are not, perhaps you could ask that it be considered. Help your child to organise • themselves to only take to school books essential for that day’s subjects. At home, limit the time • spent sitting at the
computer to 30 minute sessions and encourage them to move about and play between sessions. When buying desks and chairs for home use, consider buying an ‘office’ type chair with a back support and use a table designed to hold a computer so the screen is at the right height. Or stand the monitor on a few old copies of Yellow Pages to bring it to eye level. Encourage your children to participate in sports - there is a huge range available, both competitive and noncompetitive, all around our area. Most importantly set a good example yourself! Try not to slouch on the sofa after tea, go for a walk through Centre Vale Park, or take the kids swimming – you’ll be surprised how much more energised it makes you feel and it might relieve your back ache!
