And More e s ea e l p ak t ne o
This is the place By John Walsh In the north-west of England. It’s ace, it’s the best And the songs that we sing from the stands, from our bands Set the whole planet shaking. Our inventions are legends. There’s nowt we can’t make, and so we make brilliant music We make brilliant bands We make goals that make souls leap from seats in the stands And we make things from steel And we make things from cotton And we make people laugh, take the mick summat rotten And we make you at home And we make you feel welcome and we make summat happen And we can’t seem to help it And if you’re looking from history, then yeah we’ve a wealth But the Manchester way is to make it yourself. And make us a record, a new number one And make us a brew while you’re up, love, go on And make us feel proud that you’re winning the league And make us sing louder and make us believe that this is the place that has helped shape the world And this is the place where a Manchester girl named Emmeline Pankhurst from the streets of Moss Side led a suffragette city with sisterhood pride And this is the place with appliance of science, we’re on it, atomic, we struck with defiance, and in the face of a challenge, we always stand tall,
Mancunians, in union, delivered it all Such as housing and libraries and health, education and unions and co-ops and first railway stations So we’re sorry, bear with us, we invented commuters. But we hope you forgive us, we invented computers. And this is the place Henry Royce strolled with Rolls, and we’ve rocked and we’ve rolled with our own northern soul And so this is the place to do business then dance, where go-getters and goal-setters know they’ve a chance And this is the place where we first played as kids. And me mum, lived and died here, she loved it, she did. And this is the place where our folks came to work, where they struggled in puddles, they hurt in the dirt and they built us a city, they built us these towns and they coughed on the cobbles to the deafening sound to the steaming machines and the screaming of slaves, they were scheming for greatness, they dreamed to their graves. And they left us a spirit. They left us a vibe. That Mancunian way to survive and to thrive and to work and to build, to connect, and create and Greater Manchester’s greatness is keeping it great. And so this is the place now with kids of our own. Some are born here, some drawn here, but they all call it home. And they’ve covered the cobbles, but they’ll never defeat, all the dreamers and schemers who still teem through these streets.
Because this is a place that has been through some hard times: oppressions, recessions, depressions, and dark times. But we keep fighting back with Greater Manchester spirit. Northern grit, Northern wit, and Greater Manchester’s lyrics. Because this is a place where we stand strong together, with a smile on our face, greater Manchester forever. And we’ve got this place where a team with a dream can get funding and something to help with a scheme. Because this is a place that understands your grand plans. We don’t do “no can do” we just stress “yes we can” Forever Manchester’s a charity for people round here, you can fundraise, donate, you can be a volunteer. You can live local, give local, we can honestly say, we do charity different, that Mancunian way. And we fund local kids, and we fund local teams. We support local dreamers to work for their dreams. We support local groups and the great work they do. So can you help us. help local people like you? Because this is the place in our hearts, in our homes, because this is the place that’s a part of our bones. Because Greater Manchester gives us such strength from the fact that this is the place, we should give something back. Always remember, never forget, forever Manchester.

news Bike libraries launched
W
est Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) is going to give young people the opportunity to get cycling as it launches two Bike Libraries as part of the Welcome to Yorkshire Bike Libraries Scheme.
The new Bike Libraries were officially launched in April by the Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Howard Blagbrough, at Halifax Fire Station. The scheme, started by Yorkshire Bank, is the world’s first bike bank scheme and sees people donate
unwanted bikes which are then fixed up and available to hire free of charge. Halifax Fire Station, King Cross, and Illingworth Fire Station, on Keighley Road will loan bikes out once a month. The loans can be for a few days or long-term. WYFRS will run the Bike Libraries in partnership with Welcome to Yorkshire and Calderdale Council. As well as offering free bike loans for children and families there will be bike safety advice, affordable bike repairs, servicing and Bikeability courses. Station commander for Halifax and Illingworth, Dominic Furby, said: “We are delighted to be a part of this fantastic scheme and have had over 120 bikes donated to us from across the county. I hope the addition of our Halifax and Illingworth fire stations into the Bike Libraries scheme will get more children and families from Calderdale on their bikes!”
Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “The Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries is a truly unique scheme launched as a legacy of the Tour de France and Tour de Yorkshire, designed to give every child in Yorkshire access to a bike, regardless of their circumstances.” People eligible to borrow a bike include: • Children in the ‘Cycling to School’ Scheme • Parents and children using the scheme who want to go on family trips • Tourists, as the scheme will be linked to Calderdale Tourism • Partnership groups looking to use the bikes for fitness and learning.

news Health Minds turns 10
H
ealthy Minds is a small, local, mental health charity that will be celebrating its 10th birthday this year. Their aim is to understand the problems people face on a day to day basis and offer a place where you can get support to manage life’s ups and downs.
The support takes many different forms, as everyone’s needs are different. They offer facilitated peer support groups, courses workshops and drop-ins. They also provide free mental health education sessions to groups, organisations and schools plus employment support and welfare rights support. Project Worker, Deborah Corbyn, told us more about the different projects, groups and events they are running in and around Todmorden: The Parent Peer Support Group This was set up recently and is for parents with children of any age. We hope it will be an opportunity to meet other parents, to share experiences and gain support in an encouraging, confidential, non-judgemental space. We all need a chance to talk!
or shine). Refreshments and a mud kitchen will be provided. Walk and Talk event Finally, to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and to promote the services we offer in Todmorden, we are planning a lovely event on Saturday 15th July. We’ll be walking and talking along the canal, starting at our new allotment, and strolling down to Central Methodist Church for delicious cake and afternoon tea. It is only a short walk at a very sensible pace and will be accessible and safe for everyone. We’ll be providing some activities at our allotment space, plus stalls and activities at the church, provided by Healthy Minds and other local organisations.

handmade parade
his year’s Handmade Parade with be the 10th annual parade and will, once more, bring celebration and spectacle to the streets of Hebden Bridge on Sunday 25th June.
The parade starts at noon from the Handmade Parade workshops on Victoria Road. It will head down Valley Road, through St George’s Square and Bridge Gate to finish in Calder Holmes Park, where there will be mini festival of live music, dance, street theatre and picnic in the park with fabulous food stalls from local vendors until 4pm. But, of course, one of the best bits
about the parade is everyone is invited to take part. Open workshops before the parade day give everyone the chance to make costumes, carryable art or help create giant puppets, with as much help from the resident professional carnival artists, volunteers and guest artists as is required. Everyone is welcome and all the materials are provided. If you’re under 13, you do need to have an adult with you. Entrance is by donation.

The group meets every 2nd and 4th Wednesday during term time, 9.30 to 11.30, at the Central Methodist Church, Todmorden. Emotional Health & Wellbeing Project This new project is part of the continuing response to help the community in and around Todmorden following the floods. The aim is to provide support for people’s emotional health and wellbeing. It is funded by the Community Foundation for Calderdale and “Healthy Minds” will be working alongside “Staying Well” to develop different types of support as requested by people in the local community. If you would like to have some input in the consultation process please contact “Healthy Minds”. Allotment Group After an extremely kind donation of some land near Dobroyd Road, we are in the process of developing an Allotment Group which we hope will be up and running (and growing!) by the beginning of the Summer. There are plans for various activities throughout the summer, including our ‘Big Dig In’ at 2pm - 4pm on Saturday 10th June (rain

It is situated very close to Simister Island - the motorway junction south of Bury, where the M62 meets the M60 and the M66. At that junction head south on the M60, towards Ashton-Under-Lyne, take the first exit (Jn 19) and follow the signs for the park. There are a number of gates to the park but not all have parking. The car parks are well signed but they do have a charge on weekends, bank holidays and in the school holidays. However, there is a Metrolink station, called ‘Heaton Park’, right next to one of the park gates. It is on the Manchester to Bury line so you can park for free at Bury Interchange, Whitefield and Radcliffe Metrolink stops and travel to the park by tram. I recommend you check the map and maybe download the park map from the website, before you set off. The park is centred around Heaton Hall, built
in 1772. It is Grade I listed building with an Orangery attached, but neither are currently open to the public (except for pre-bookable open day tours. See website for more details). However there are plenty of other attractions dotted around the park, that you can visit. Close to the hall is the Stable block which houses a cafe and classroom, and encloses the Animal Centre in the courtyard. The Animal Centre was built only a few years ago to replace the petting corner and is home to a variety of animals, including alpacas and goats plus smaller animals (like guinea pigs and rabbits) that can be handled. Chickens can be fed and you may spot a peacock or two wandering around. Out around the park there are plenty of other animals to spot too. There are horses that are taken out to their fields from the stables and highland cows, with huge horns, in a field

Heaton Park
Middleton Road, Higher Blackley, M25 2SW www.manchester.gov.uk/heatonpark in the park. There are also Donkey rides available. Of course a good park has to have a great playground, and Heaton has a brilliant one. It is newly refurbished and has a really tall slide as a centre piece. It also has accessible roundabouts and swings so everyone can enjoy the fun. For older kids there is a boating lake with rowing boats for hire. You can also buy fishing licences for a day’s fishing in the lake, there are beautiful gardens to explore, an 18 hole championship golf course, football pitches and the only flat green bowling green in Manchester, built for the Commonwealth Games. The Temple sits on the highest point in Manchester and is believed to have been built as an observatory. There is an Astronomy group who meet there now. On a clear day, the views are worth the walk. The Dower House is used for Beekeeping, with live hive demonstrations on Sundays and Heaton Park Honey available to buy. Finally, don’t miss the Heaton Tramway. Manchester Corporation bought the park was in 1902 and quickly added a spur to the tramway
that passed the park gates, so parties could be brought directly into the park. When the trams were phased out in Manchester, the spur remained, buried in new Tarmac. This was unearthed in the late 1970s and the tramway reopened in 1980, so it is now the only piece of original Manchester tramway still in operation. It has been extended since 1980 and you can now catch an original, preserved tram from the Middleton Road park entrance to the boating lake, approx 1km away. We visited on the first warm day of the Spring, and the place was packed. We found the car parking limited, and full, though there was no charge on the day we were there. The cafe’s were the usual mix of hot and cold foods, with children’s options and children’s sandwich boxes but, on a nice day, you can save a lot of money by taking a picnic. It is also worth noting, the park is not flat. There are some steep sloping sections but plenty of good paths suitable for buggies, as well as more ‘off road’ paths. Often, especially over the Summer, special events take place in the park. There is a regular Fun Fair that visits, plus sports events, doggy days and exhibitions. Check the website for all the details of these plus the opening and operating times of the permanent features, as not all operate every day. Overall a clean, well kept park. But beware it can get very busy.
page header activities Anytime games – keeping boredom at bay!
T
hese games are free, fun and you’ll find new games children have never played before are always interesting. Many of them also make great party games or work well to pass the time on a long journey. We’ve all been there. And who can blame them for getting bored. So here are a few ideas of easy-to-play games to keep our younger charges amused, happy and more importantly at times – just plain distracted.
The Name game
A real family favourite of ours; working through the alphabet A-Z, take it in turns giving a name beginning with that letter. For example, child 1 starts with the letter A and says Abigail, child 2 follows with the letter B and shouts Bridie; and so on. The first person to hesitate, who cannot think of a name to correspond with the letter they have, is out. This continues until there is only one person left who is the winner. If you reach Z, start at A again but think of a different name to the last one given. You can vary the rules depending on the age of the group, making it easier or harder or instead of names you could use, colours, animals or (our favourite) countries.
Who/What am I game?
Look through a magazine or handy leaflet and select different pictures, one for each child. Tape these pictures to their back so they cannot see the image but the rest of the players can. Each player then takes it in turns to guess what picture they have on their back by asking questions. The questions must be answered with a yes or a no. For example, am I human? Yes. Am I a boy/male? No. If the answer to their question is yes, they get to ask another one and can continue to keep Asking questions until they get a ‘no’ response; at which point it is the next child’s turn. Play the game until every child has figured out their own picture or the first
image has been correctly guessed. They are the winner! The pictures could be of people, animals, food, places; even footballers! Again it depends on the age of the participants. With a bit more preparation, you could place an item in a box, tape it up then the children can shake if they want to. Still answering only yes or no, they can try to guess what is in the box.
The What’s Missing game? Place ten or more, depending how hard you want to make it, everyday objects on a tray. For example a pen, a cup, a TV remote (bet they remember this one), a mobile phone, a rubber, a small toy or ornament – anything small; then cover with a tea towel. Make sure all the children can see the tray and what is on it before you remove the cover. Allow them 15 seconds to study what’s on the tray before covering it again. Whilst the children aren’t looking, remove one of the items. Then uncover the tray again and allow another 15 seconds to study the items on the tray before covering it up again. The first child to guess the missing item is the winner. A variation could be to not remove an item and the aim of the game is simply to remember as many items as possible in one minute. (A cuddly toy for this one is a must – at least to amuse adults)! The winner is the child with the most correct items.
Same letter game
Within a minute, ask the children to name as many words as they can that begins with a selected letter from the alphabet about a chosen subject. The winner is the player that gets the most words. The subjects again can be varied even brands of chocolate bars or song titles.
Treasure Hunt
This is a game not just for Easter, this can be played around the house and garden. Hide lots of buttons or small covered sweets and give the children a set time, say 15 minutes, to find as many as they can. The winner is the child with the most buttons or sweets. Depends how healthy you want the game to be; with the sweet option the game is more exciting but extremely competitive.
The Yes/No game
The aim of this game is to see how long a player can keep answering questions you ask without saying yes or no. This is pretty difficult, so keep the questions simple, for example do you like chocolate buttons? (This question always gets my children) Their answers can be anything, except yes or no. Time each player and the winner is the player who can last the longest without saying the words yes or no.
Enjoy and have fun!

Formby point
A
bout 1½ hour’s drive away, Formby Point is a part of the North West coastline looked after by the National Trust.
The area, consisting mainly of pine forest, sand dunes and open sandy beach, is well kept and closely protected to retain its natural, unspoilt beauty. The coastline is eroding at an astonishing rate of 4 metres per year but the pine forest, mainly planted within the last century, is there to stabilise the sand dunes. However it now has a more famous part to play as one of the last pockets of England to be home to Red Squirrels. Be aware, the approaching roads can get very busy on nice, sunny days however it is worth it. When you arrive and pay for parking (free for National Trust members) you are given a map of the area, showing some suggested walks through the forest. We headed straight for the Red Squirrel walk but, despite our best efforts, we didn’t spot any. There are feeding stations for the squirrels in the forests so maybe one of those would be the best place to try and spot them. The National Trust website
has a leaflet you can print off with top viewing tips, should you need them. The kids then got distracted by a sculpture they could see through the trees and we headed off course, ending with us being a little lost. The map eventually sorted us out though and we found our way, through the dunes, to the beautiful sandy beach. It is worth noting that, while the water quality of this beach is listed as “good to excellent” this is not really a family swimming beach. The water can be very cold; when the tide is out, it is a very long way out; currents change very quickly and life-guards are only on duty at busy times. However, another attraction of this area is the discovery of prehistoric footprints, both human and animal, on the beach which can sometimes be seen when the tide is right. Take your binoculars too. This beach is just round the corner from Liverpool and there is usually plenty of ships coming and going. Some of the paths and the beach are not really recommended for buggies and prams as it is mainly soft sand, but babies in slings would be fine and toddlers would enjoy it. Cycling is encouraged on specified routes so
these would also be fine for buggies. The beach is also very popular with dog walkers so expect to meet unleashed dogs anywhere on the beach. If you take your kite or some games to the beach, or go for a long walk (which you can easily do) it could fill a whole day but, if not, about nine miles south, down the coast is Crosby Beach, best known as the home of Anthony Gormley’s artwork “Another Place”. The artwork consists of 100 cast-iron, lifesize figures spread out along two miles of the foreshore, stretching over half a mile out to sea. We arrived as the tide was just starting to ebb. A few statues stood above the water line, some were buried slightly in the sand and some can be seen full height, but look out to sea and you will notice heads appearing from the water as more figures are slowly revealed. Each one is identical to the next, a cast iron life-size model of the (naked) artist himself. Again the sand is soft in places and this area is prone to quick-sand so we don’t recommend you take a buggy, but there is a paved walk along the beach wall from where the artwork can still be appreciated.

Vitamin D and Sunscreen
ately the media have been telling us a lot about Vitamin D, it’s health benefits and how many of the British population, especially those in the northern half of the country, are lacking in this particular vitamin. However, there is a dilemma. The main source of Vitamin D is sun exposure which, we have been told for many years, is not health because of the cancer risks. So what are we supposed to do?
Why do we need Vitamin D?
The main function of this vitamin in our bodies is to aid the adsorption of calcium into our bones. This is even more critical in children when their bones are still actively growing. Low levels of Vitamin D can lead to the disease Rickets which, if not caught early enough, can lead to permanently deformed bones, especially in the legs and spine. Vitamin D is also critical for some other processes in our bodies, such as hormone production and nerve function.
UV Radiation
Sunscreen product have made us familiar with the different types of UV radiation coming from the sun. • UVA makes up the majority of our sun exposure. It causes skin ageing and cancers. • UVB is more powerful and can cause more damage to our bodies, including sun burns, cataracts and melanomas. UVB is also the most efficient radiation to make Vitamin D. • UVC is the most dangerous radiation from the sun but rarely reaches the earth’s surface due to adsorption in the ozone layer of the atmosphere.
10
How much sun is safe?
So, we would all benefit from some sun exposure. The current advice is, little and often is best. The time to make vitamin D in the skin is much less than the time taken for skin to redden and burn. In Summer, in Northern Britain, a few minutes exposure of bare skin to the sun will be sufficient to produce enough Vitamin D. If you or your children are likely to be out for any longer than a few minutes, follow the usual advice of • applying sunscreen of a minimum SPF factor of 30, • re-applied every two hours and after swimming or sweating, • use hats, sun glasses and shade where possible, • remember that, even on cloudy days, the radiation can still reach you, • sunscreens used only after 6 months of age, • babies under 6 months should be kept out of the sun completely by covering them with clothing and putting them in the shade, • limiting exposure to before 10am and after 4pm will reduce any risk. Bear in mind, if you are holidaying to sunnier climes, the risks of cancers far outweighs the risks of low vitamin D. Use your sun block at all times.
Other ways to get Vitamin D
If you are housebound or dark skinned (especially in northern Britain in winter) it may be difficult to produce enough Vitamin D in your own skin, naturally, so you may need to investigate alternatives sources. Diet is the best way. Vitamin D occurs naturally in salmon, tuna and eggs and can be got from fortified foods such as cereals and yoghurts. Alternatively, Vitamin D supplements are sold over the counter in many different forms, including some child friendly forms. The recommended dosage for children under 4 is 400 IU daily. For children 4 and over, it is 600 IU daily.

Heptonstall Out of School Club Heptonstall J, I & N School, Smithwell Lane, Heptonstall 01422 843619
On this first page we have the Pre-school and Playgroups that run in our area. These usually offer free sessions for children aged 3 and over for 15 hours per week during term time. Contact them directly for more information. The Out of School Clubs listings are for older children who require care outside normal school hours or during holidays. Those
listed take all children, not just those who attend any associated school. The bottom section shows opening times for places you might like to visit regularly with your child. The centre spread is the Pre-school Diary. White background is for drop-in sessions, shaded background is for bookable activities. All sessions will require an adult to remain with the child at all times. Most activities charge a small fee; all Children’s Centre services are free, with any donations gratefully

Funded early years childcare for working parents If you are a working parent you could now get an additional 15 hours per week (for 38 weeks/ year) of funded childcare for your 3 or 4 year old child from September 2017. This is in addition to the 15 funded hours all 3 and 4 year olds get giving you a total of 30 hours! If you’re already using childcare, ask your childcare provider for more information.

30 hours free childcare from September 2017
I
n June 2015, the government introduced the “Childcare Bill” which will offer 30 hours of free childcare for employed families of three and four year olds. This will become effective from September ‘17 and you will be able to check your eligibility from May ’17. The 30 hours extended entitlement is double the 15 hours currently available for all three and four year olds and applies for 38 weeks of the year (term time). However the entitlement can be spread throughout the year, to include school holiday time, as long as you don’t go over a total of 1,140 hours per year. The government is funding the extension of the free childcare to support those parents who currently work, wish to return to work, or wish to increase their working hours, by making childcare more affordable.
Although you can’t start your sessions until September, you may want to start planning for the extra entitlement by speaking to your employers about increasing your working hours, changing shift patterns or by beginning to actively look for work. You should also speak to your childcare provider in advance to check availability for the days you can access the additional hours. You must also check your eligibility carefully. The rules for the entitlement are as follows: • Your childcare provider must be an Ofsted registered and regulated provider. This applies to nurseries, childminders, pre-schools, schools with nurseries or after-school clubs. • Both parents (or the sole parent in the case of lone parent families) must be working. • Both parents must earn at least the National Living Wage (currently £115 per week) or 16 hours worth of the National Minimum Wage (that would work out at £120 per week for over 25s or £112.80 for 21 - 25s). • Each parent must earn less than £100,000 per year. If one wage climbs above this figure then your free childcare entitlement will drop back to 15 hours per week. • If one parent gets benefits relating to caring responsibilities or a disability and the other is working, the family may still be eligible to the entitlement.
‘Working’ means both employed and self-employed. NB, the current entitlement of 15 hours per week for 38 weeks (or 570 hours per year) will still be available for all three and four year olds, even if you aren’t eligible for the additional hours. You can check your eligibility and apply online now. If you’re eligible you’ll get a code which you’ll need to give to your chosen childcare provider when you register your child. This code will be valid for 3 months. You must re-confirm this code online every 3 months. Visit www.childcarechoices.gov.uk for more information.

Bloke page in a Kitchen header Berry and Vanilla Cheesecake By Richard Dalby
T
This cheesecake is just the thing for the Summer months; beautifully fresh, slightly tangy and bursting with fruit flavours. We loved the pieces of fruit hidden in the cheesecake mixture; they really make this something special.
Ingredients • • • • • • •
300g digestive biscuits 100g gently melted butter 100g icing sugar 400g crème fraîche 600g cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 150g raspberries, blueberries or strawberries
Method 1. Grease and line (with greaseproof paper) a medium sized spring-bottom cake tin. 2. Place the biscuits in a large plastic food bag and seal so that the crumbs don’t fly out. Carefully smash the biscuits with a rolling pin, until they all look like crumbs. 3. Tip the biscuit crumbs into a mixing bowl, add the melted butter and mix well. 4. Tip the biscuit mixture into your cake tin. Using your fingers and the back of your hand, press the mixture firmly and evenly down into the base. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to set. 5. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the icing sugar, crème fraîche, soft cheese and vanilla extract. 6. Take half of your berries and gently fold into the mixture. If the berries are a bit big, you could chop them in half. 7. Spoon the cream cheese mixture on top of the set biscuit base. Arrange the rest of the berries on top. Refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 3 hours, or preferably overnight. Remove from the tin, and then enjoy!

his is a simple but luxurious tasting recipe that my daughter wanted to try out. There’s no baking in ovens involved so, apart from melting the butter, she was able to get stuck in and make this with very little help.

Q Since my early 20s I have
been suffering with severe headaches which I have to take medication for. I have heard that physiotherapy can help and may be able to stop my headaches occurring. A Migraines are now listed in the
top 20 disabilities by the World Health Organisation and a survey of over 120,000 households found that 40% of females and 20% of males will experience migraine at some stage in their lifetime. The greatest frequency of attacks seem to occur is between the ages of 20 and 24 in females and 15 and 19 in males but can be likely at any age before 35.* Clearly this is a significant problem for many people! *(Stewart WF, Wood C, Reed ML, Roy J, Lipton RB. Cumulative lifetime migraine incidence in women and men. Cephalalgia 2008;28:11701178)
Physio & Therapies in Todmorden offers treatments for a wide range of family health issues. If you have any questions, queries or concerns you would like to ask an expert about please get in touch by any of the methods shown on page 3.
They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.
Historically headache has been divided into two main types: Migraine (with numerous variants) and Tension-type Headache. Because of the throbbing nature of ‘migraine’ the assumption has been that the underlying disorder involves blood vessels inside the head, whilst in Tension-type Headache, the assumption has been that increased tension in the muscles of the scalp and forehead is responsible. However recent research does not support this conclusion. It is now known that: • dilatation or expansion of blood vessels is not the cause of migraine • increased tension in the muscles of the scalp and forehead is not the cause of Tension-type Headache • most Tension-type Headache sufferers occasionally experience a more severe headache resembling a Migraine; conversely most Migraineurs occasionally experience a lesser headache similar to a Tension-type Headache • both Migraine and Tension-type Headache conditions share a common disorder - a sensitised brainstem. All this has led medical authorities to suggest that Migraine and Tension-type Headaches are not separate conditions but are different presentations of one condition.
Many of my patients report that they experience both ‘headache’ and Migraine. When they get a Migraine, the throbbing pain is accompanied by nausea, light and sound sensitivity and they need to take a Triptan to ease it. When they get a headache, it’s only an ache and a Paracetamol is all that is required. However when I ask about the area of pain, it is identical for both the Migraine and Tension type Headache, suggesting that the same mechanism is responsible but on some occasions it is much more severe i.e. a ‘migraine’. Cervicogenic (neck) headache has been described for many years by clinicians of varying professions and specialties. What we now understand is that injury or joint disease in the upper three segments of the neck can sensitise the brainstem and cause Headaches and Migraines. However the great news is that we can effectively treat these injuries and damaged joints with specific Physiotherapy, which in many cases can rid patients of their pain. The assessment is very clear cut - if I can reproduce your head pain by pressing on the joints in the top of your neck, I can probably greatly reduce or even rid you of the pain. I really enjoy treating people with Headaches and Migraines as I know how debilitating they can be. I now have many delighted patients that can now have a glass of red wine, some cheese or a bar of chocolate without it ending up in a headache or a migraine! Lynne Midwinter Physiotherapist
