news todmorden scout post

th/26th Calder Valley Scouts has been in existence over 50 years and meet at Central Methodist Church, Todmorden (see Diary Pages for more details). While scouting is loosely a Christian movement it in no way restricts who they accept as new members. “We accept all Christian denominations and all religions.” the leader, David Payne told us. “We do not attend regular church parades at Central, but we do support the RBL’s remembrance day and Veteran’s day parades. We also actively support Todmorden Gang Show, which has been running nearly as long as the Group.” “We try to offer a varied range of activities to the boys and girls in the Group and have our own minibus, which we use for camps and trips.” The Postal Services Act of 2000 confirmed an exemption that meant charity groups did not need a licence if they wanted to carry Christmas post, any time between 25th November and Christmas Day, but the idea of a scout Christmas post goes back at least to the 1980s and this year, once again, the

8th/26th Calder Valley Scouts will be providing the service for Todmorden. Unfortunately there is no National Scout Post service, so the local scouts can only accept cards intended for the local area (OL14 postcodes) but, at just 25p per card, users can save a lot of money and effort, plus the Scouts get some much needed funding boost. The service starts on 25th November and last day for posting is 16th December. You don’t need to live in Todmorden to use the service, but they only deliver to Todmorden addresses. Simply take your cards to one of the post boxes listed below, pay for your stamps there and post your cards. Please write your card recipient address clearly. Post boxes are located in: • Premier Store, Oak Ave (formerly Hartley’s) • Eric Wrathall’s Shoe Repairs • Crumbly Cheese - Indoor Market • Todmorden News Centre (formally Cryers) • Todmorden Tourist Information Centre • Walsden Village News • Walsden Library • Abdul’s Newsagent - Halifax Road • Central Hair Design - Water Street • Cornholme Premier Store

J
essica SummersJackson (QTS, CHP, CHBP), of Hebden Bridge Hypnotherapy, has recently expanded her practice so she can now work with children.
Jessica, who trained in hypnopsychotherapy, has been gradually growing aspects of her business in order to better support families in the region. Jessica told us; “I have called this aspect of my therapy Family Foundations as I want to offer a service ‘From conception to birth and beyond’. In this past year Jessica found she has received more and more enquiries from parents asking if she could work with children. That is why she felt compelled to train further, in order to offer a comprehensive service to families. “Since the birth of my daughter in 2015, I have felt driven to provide a service for parents that begins from the very first moment they consider becoming a parent. Couples and individuals can struggle with becoming a parent for all sorts of reasons such as physiological issues around fertility and other physiological difficulties. I’ve found hypnotherapy to be a really
effective tool for all these types of problems. “Nearer to the time of birth parents can feel confident in experiencing an enjoyable and comfortable birth with my Advanced Hypnosis for Childbirth classes and, most importantly, to continue that support postnatally.” Jessica has been lucky enough to train with Sharon Mustard, the founder of easibirthing®, and is one of only a handful of hypnotherapists in the north of England who specialise in postnatal support for both parent and child. “Parenting these days is so different from even ten or fifteen years ago.” Jessica explained. “As I found out through my own experience, sometimes we need to be creative and look elsewhere for that extra support. Children also face so many pressures these days, from family dynamics changing to exam pressures to just plain fitting in.” Jessica told us. “As we’re all aware, children can’t always express what’s on their minds and they can develop symptoms such as bed-wetting, sleeplessness, anxiety and behaviour problems in response to stress. Hypnotherapy is a gentle, positive and effective way to address these issues.
Jessica Summers-Jackson of Hebden Bridge Hyphotherapy “Hypnotherapy is particularly effective with children as they’re natural visualisers and can easily flip from being a fairy princess to a wizard and back to being a child. Many of the methods I use are creative and active. Kids don’t always like to sit still for a long time so being flexible and responding to what my smaller clients bring is a big part of the job!”

colden school - a good school
T
he Governors and Acting Head Teacher of Colden Junior and Infant School, Mrs Sarah Hetherington, are delighted with the result of the recent Ofsted Inspection which judges the school as ‘Good’ in all areas with some ‘Outstanding’ features.
The report said “this school continues to be good.” It noted that “pupils’ outcomes are strong and improving overall at every key stage... pupils are incredibly supportive of each other ...(and) there is a strong culture of keeping pupils safe.” The dedication and commitment of staff was commented on as staff
are keen to, ”reflect on how well their teaching improves pupils’ learning so they can contribute to the school’s journey of improvement at the heart of the local community.” While there has been a recent period of turbulence, it was recognised that Governors have worked hard to listen to parents, who are now very supportive. Mrs Hetherington said, “Having Ofsted confirm that we are a ‘good’ school means that we can now set about focusing on making Colden ‘outstanding’ again.” Commenting on this report, outgoing Chair of Governors said, “I am pleased that, although this Ofsted visit took place soon after Ms Hetherington became Acting Head, it shows that the hard work of the last two years
by Governors, staff and parents is producing a really good Primary education for our children. For any parents with children who will be starting school in September 2018, there are a series of open events to which you would be most welcome to attend. These are an opportunity to meet the Reception team and to have a play in the classroom and outside area. Monday 20th November 1-2.30pm Thursday 7th December 10-11.30am Thursday 11th January 10-11.30am

news helping children to ‘grow’ and succeed
W
hen we think back to our school days, experiences from person to person can vary wildly. Most of us remember school as a carefree experience; however in the current educational climate, an emphasis on high standards, consistently good results and the threat of a bad OfSTED places pressure on head teachers, teachers and ultimately, on our children. Carefree school days can suddenly seem to be a thing of the past for struggling pupils. Childline delivered 11% more counselling sessions in 2015-16, and 1 in 5 of these took place in May as pupils faced upcoming exams. With pupils as young as 6 taking end of Key Stage tests, we have to consider how an ‘exam factory’ culture might be affecting pupils’ attitudes and confidence levels at school. Hebden Bridge based teacher Sarah Hawthorne felt that it was time for her to take steps towards building back up that confidence that can quickly fade in a stressful environment. Grow Tuition is the tutoring company Sarah set up in September 2016 to provide a service for pupils who are not having a positive experience of education and her ethos is simple: develop confidence and a love for learning in all pupils. Grow tuition works on the idea that every child is different. As Einstein once said, ‘Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’ Understanding how a child learns, what their specific
needs are and what they enjoy doing are all special tools that Sarah uses to design her lessons. Sarah is a qualified teacher with 10 years’ experience of teaching pupils across the Primary age range. She specialises in developing Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 English and Maths skills with an emphasis on personal, social and emotional development. She encourages children to be part of small learning groups of 2 - 4 pupils, where the benefits of collaborative learning and peer support can be fully utilised. Grow Tuition is based in a log cabin (yes, really!) that has been transformed into a fully equipped classroom environment. Sarah delivers lessons using a mixture of ‘hands-on’ materials, digital resources and more traditional learning aids which are tailored to the needs of each pupil. Impersonal computer-based learning programs are a no-no; ‘real’ teaching and learning in a nurturing environment is the order of the day here.
Sarah Hawthorne from Mytholmroyd
Regular contact with parents ensures that the learning taking place at Grow links with that of both home and at school. Parents of current pupils have plenty of positive things to say about Sarah’s approach: ‘…at Grow Tuition an environment is created in which the learning is real, relevant and purposeful and, perhaps most importantly, fun.’ ‘The transformation in our daughter over the time she has been attending Grow Tuition has been nothing short of revelatory. She has gone from being near-phobic about maths to a child who openly tells people that she loves the subject and talks about it with obvious and genuine enthusiasm.’

page out &header about Manchester Christmas Markets www.manchester.gov.uk/markets
Manchester any time between 10th November and 20th December, you can’t miss the rows and rows of wooden chalet-type stalls selling a huge array of European gift items and food. Anything from unique jewellery, hand-made bags, clothes and toys to Belgian chocolate and Dutch cheeses, most of which you would not find in the shops. This year there is an area of the city where the markets are particularly family friendly. If you’re there with younger children, head to Cathedral Gardens (close to Victoria Station) where you will find the windmill bar selling grown-up drinks, but also the smaller windmill selling waffles and pancakes for the little ones. You will also find fairground rides, a helter-skelter, a ferris wheel and the Ice Rink, back for a second year.
Top Tips to help you make the most of your day • Albert Square, right in front of the Town Hall, is the largest area of the market. This is where most of the hot foot outlets are and also where most of the crowds are. The area is cobbled so it won’t be good for buggies and prams, especially if you are there at a particularly busy time. • Albert Square also has a strict no dog policy (except for assistance dogs). Other market sites are more open and dogs are okay there, but not advised. • Evening times around the market are much busier than daytime. If you want to shop at leisure then weekdays are recommended. If you want a magical, Christmassy time with your children, head down there during the evenings. The market opens at 10.00am every day and closes at 7.30pm in November, 8.00pm in December, 9.00pm every day on Albert Square only. • Don’t forget it is all outdoors and it is cold at this time of year. Make sure you are all wrapped up warm, especially your toes!
• To cut down on litter, every food and drink outlet has a deposit scheme on all mugs and glasses. It is £1 for glasses and £2.50 for mugs which you can either claim back when you return your empties, or keep as a souvenir. • There are plenty of loos around Manchester City Centre and some shops have agreed to open their facilities to all visitors, not just their own customers. Visit the Manchester Markets website for all the details. • It is recommended that you pre-book for the Ice skating rink. This can be done online through Ticketsource. It is open from 11.00am to 8.45pm and a 45 minute session costs £10.00 for adults, £8.00 for children and £30.00 for a family ticket (2+2 or 1+3). • We always find, the best way to get to Manchester from here is to take the train direct to Manchester Victoria. This saves on petrol and parking fees, not to mention the hassle of traffic and trying to find a parking space suitable for all day. There are market stalls within a few hundred meters of the station entrance.

Ribchester Roman Museum and Baths
W
hen you have an hour or two free, it’s relatively dry outside and you need a ‘something for everyone’ afternoon, then a visit to Ribchester Village and the Roman Museum is a good way to spend the time.
The Roman site and fort at Ribchester (Bremetennacum Veteranorum) was believed to be established in the early 70s AD and was built as part of a network of defensive forts across northern Britannia. The area accommodated a garrison of cavalry troops whose purpose it was to patrol the surrounding area and keep the local inhabitants under control. Later in the second century the settlement gained a high level of importance and so the civilian site outside the fort became extensive and where many craftsmen worked and plied their trade. A bath house and at least two temples were also built outside. The fort is believed to have been occupied well into the fourth century. It was only about one hundred years ago that the area became a recognised site of special historical interest, as a means to stem the flow of Roman artefacts leaving the village. So in 1915 the Ribchester Museum of Roman Antiquities was opened, directly on the site of the fort. Since then many developments have been taken place and it is now a registered charity : The Friends of Ribchester Roman Museum Trust.
Now an afternoon learning about Roman history may not be to everyone’s liking. However a trip out to Ribchester village incorporating a circular walk that takes in the remains of Roman baths, a riverside amble to feed the ducks, a small museum, a picturesque church and churchyard and a visit to a children’s park could be a winner. (Not to mention a couple of lovely pubs and ice cream shop). The village has a large pay and display carpark, which is reasonably priced and is beside a large playing field and children’s play area; behind that is St Wilfred’s Church and the Museum, so it’s not a long walk and good for little legs that tire easily. We went to see remains of the Roman bath house and granary first, where there are a few information boards helping us to understand what the layout was like. This is free. From there we walked alongside the river to the Museum ; the park we left to last (my decision). The Museum is only small and is all on one level, with a charge of £3.00 per adult and £1.50 for children over 5. Under 5’s and OAP’s are free. It’s well laid out and easy to follow. For what is, essentially, a small village museum there is a lot of information here and some interesting artefacts on display, such as a cavalry tombstone, lots of coins and pieces of pottery, many of which were found during the excavation of St Wilfred’s graveyard, which is adjacent to the Museum. The most striking item is a fine copy of the famous Ribchester Helmet which is currently
on display at the British Museum. There are also opportunities to handle items and dress up. My children especially enjoyed an interactive 3D model, which allowed them to virtually explore the reconstructed fort, bath house and neighbouring settlement by means of an Xbox app. The staff were very approachable and knowledgeable and the man who spoke to the children about Roman history had them all inspired, especially my youngest when talking about the 3D model Xbox app! After that we meandered back through St Wilfred’s churchyard to the park and play area, obviously! There is a small gift shop on site and there are public toilets next to the car park. This was not the most action packed of afternoons, but a fascinating place to visit and everyone enjoyed it. Result! Bloke in a Kitchen Carrot, Honey and Nutmeg Cookies
T
By Richard Dalby
hese lovely light cookies are absolutely delicious, the sweet carrot and nutmeg really go well together.
My daughter came across this recipe in Nadiya Hussain’s excellent children’s book, ‘Bake Me A Story’, and was desperate to give it a go. It’s one of those brilliantly simple ‘mix everything together in a big bowl’ recipes which young kids can have a great time helping out with.
Ingredients (makes 6 cookies) • • • • • • • • •
1 large carrot, peeled and grated 100g rolled porridge oats 90g plain flour 1½ teaspoons of baking powder 1½ teaspoons of ground nutmeg 30g salted butter, softened 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 120g runny honey
Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180C fan / gas mark 6. 2. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. 3. Mix the grated carrot in a large mixing bowl with the oats, flour, baking powder, nutmeg, butter, egg, vanilla extract and honey, until well combined.
5. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes, until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool.

4. Using a tablespoon, place dollops of the mixture on the baking tray, leaving 3cm between each one as they will spread a little.

new bike for christmas?
I
n the UK, the number of miles cycled has increased by an amazing 63% over the last 10 years. We spoke to Blazing Saddles in Hebden Bridge to get their advice as to how Tel: 01422844435 www.blazingsaddles.co.uk parents helpBridge, get HX7 their 35, Westcan End, Hebden 8UQchild into cycling. The Blazing Saddles countdown to Christmas has begun and another generation of small, future cyclists have written letters to Santa asking for a shiny new bike. Your job as parents and carers is to help Santa buy the right bike, in the right size, and at a price that won’t make the elves redundant. You can start them very young. In fact as soon as your toddler is up on their feet and stable, at around two years, the balance bike is the first option. These bikes teach balance and steering but don’t have pedals or a drive chain. The best balance bikes are lightweight but strong and the best, in our opinion, have a little foot platform so your child can get used to lifting their feet off the ground.
At some stage, your child will decide that they want to pedal. We have found it’s probably best to be patient and wait
until your child tells you that the time has come, as they’ll be much quicker to pick up a skill they’re determined to master. Our pedal bikes start from a 14 inch wheel size (suitable for between 3 and 5 years old) with light alloy frames and adjustable brake levers for small fingers.
Once they’ve mastered the art of pedalling, there’ll be no stopping them. Bigger bikes have gears, sometimes disc brakes, and a choice of styles; from mountain, street and hybrid to full on drop handlebar road bikes. You may find you will need a better adult bike by this time, just to keep up! Don’t forget little heads need protection and we have helmets available for babies and upwards. Our ‘Lazer’ helmets have a ‘Grow with Lazer’ helmet trade in programme, where you can trade in your outgrown helmet and get a new one for a £10
reduction - a very welcome financial help for parents. Children also like the idea of dressing for the occasion and, in our Hebden shop, we sell a great range of cycle clothing from aged 5 upwards. To help spread the cost of bike purchases, now and in the future, you can join our savings club. Ask in store for details. All our bikes are lovingly built by qualified expert mechanics, and adjusted to fit each individual child as necessary. We also offer a free 6 week bike service to make sure your new bike is running smoothly. Happy Cycling this Christmas from Blazing Saddles!

What if it all goes wrong? Drinking very large amounts in one session can lead to acute alcohol poisoning which, in turn, can result in unconsciousness, a coma, or even death. If it all goes wrong, it’s essential to get emergency help. Make sure your teenager knows the signs and the correct things to do, in case their friends need help.
If someone loses consciousness after drinking too much:
that keeps track Is it time to change the way you drink? Get Drinkaware with the new lifestyle app for iPhone. Calculate the alcohol units and calories in your drinks, review your drinking patterns over time, set your own goals and get support at the times and places where you need it the most.
You can count on it.

Keep them on their side with their head turned to the side (the recovery position). Make sure they’re breathing and their mouth and airways are clear. If they stop breathing, start mouth to mouth resuscitation. Loosen any tight clothing that might restrict their breathing. Keep them warm (but not too hot) – with blankets or a coat. Call an ambulance but don’t leave them… ask someone reliable to call the ambulance.
If someone vomits you should: • • • • Track and calculate units
Try to keep them sitting up. If they must lie down, make sure they’re in the recovery position and that their mouth and airway are clear. If they begin to choke, get help immediately. Don’t leave them even if you can’t bear the sight or smell of someone vomiting. Alcohol poisoning is extremely dangerous. It can lead to a coma and in extreme cases, death. The amount of alcohol it takes to cause alcohol poisoning depends on many factors, including size, weight, age and so on. Teenagers and inexperienced drinkers are particularly vulnerable.
The signs of alcohol poisoning
Someone may have alcohol poisoning if: •
They are breathing less than twelve times a minute or stop breathing for periods of ten seconds or more. • They’re asleep and you can’t wake them up. • Their skin is cold, clammy, pale and bluish in colour. If you suspect someone has alcohol poisoning, treat it as a medical emergency. Call an ambulance and stay with the person until help arrives.
How to recognise if your child is secretly drinking
Look out for: • • • • • • • • • • •
18
Abrupt mood swings for no apparent or good reason Skipping classes, or just not going in to school Frequent lateness Money disappearing from your purse/wallet Disappearing to their room the moment they come in for the day Significant change in school performance Restlessness or tiredness Smelling of alcohol Suddenly using breath mints or brushing teeth regularly Wanting to stay over in friends’ houses, especially after parties Becoming very secretive (more so than usual).
family matters
children and drinking Children are naturally curious about alcohol. They see people drinking and they want to know more. Kids will be influenced by their friends, their teachers, TV, films and the media but, in most cases, parents have the biggest effect on their children’s behaviour, including how they drink alcohol. So you’re in a good position to make sure they have the facts about alcohol and drinking, and can make sensible choices in the future.
Very young children
It is illegal to give a child under five alcohol. By the time a child is aged five research shows they have already formed basic attitudes and opinions about alcohol. If you drink at home, your children are bound to ask questions at an early age about what you are drinking and what it tastes like. It is tempting to just say ‘wait until you are older’ but it is worth explaining to your child that little bodies can’t digest alcohol, which is ‘strong’ so that is why they should wait until they are older. Children as young as seven can recognise the difference between relaxed social drinking and drunkenness, so we have to set a good example ourselves. Obviously the approach

hristmas is upon us again and party season is gearing up. But, if you have teenagers in your house, you may be dreading that late night phone call from their ‘friend’ who is worried about them or, worse still, from the police or hospital telling you that they have your child.
Most of us probably remember that investigating alcohol and its effects formed part of our transition into adulthood and are expecting that it’s going to be the same for our children. So what can we, as parents, do to bring up children with a healthy and safe attitude to drinking? The following advice comes from the Alcohol Education Trust: www.alcoholeducationtrust.org Visit their site for more information.
depends on the age of our children, but don’t leave it too late. Around age 11 is a great time to start talking and keep the conversation going.
your ‘baby’ is too young for all this, but unfortunately, in this savvy world, they’ll be more informed than you think! A good approach is often to talk about an embarrassing or dangerous situation you, or someone you know, got into when young and what the consequences were.
11 – 13 year-olds
The average age of a first whole drink in the UK is between ages 13 and 14 so it is important that your child has an understanding of units, how alcohol affects the body and liver, why young bodies can’t cope with alcohol and the risks they run by experimenting before that age. The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that children under 15 should not drink alcohol as their brains and livers are not fully developed and are more liable to damage. At age 11 almost all children still see it as unacceptable to get drunk (99% don’t drink regularly) but age 13 is what we call ‘the tipping point’. Growing up is an awkward time. Reaching puberty, their social lives changing, relationships and peer pressure growing. Try not to force the subject; wait until it comes up on the TV, in the media or similar. Put a conversation about drinking in context with other ‘life skills’, such as staying safe, talking about drugs and what sex is all about. You might think
Older teenagers
Finding the right balance between protecting your child and giving them freedom isn’t easy. You can’t be by their side all the time, and they wouldn’t thank you for it anyway. However, with communication and trust, you can help them to make the right decision in a tricky situation, learn from their mistakes, come to you for advice when needed and still stay safe. Research shows that older teenagers often experiment with alcohol in the company of their friends but, if their parents have been good and open role models, they are less likely to develop bad habits with respect to alcohol. By age 15 many are drinking regularly so, talking to your kids about sensible drinking guidelines, what a unit is, how to resist peer pressure and what happens to your reactions if you combine drinking and driving for example, is of great importance.

Q My son has recently started complaining of a sore neck and shoulders before bed. I am concerned this may be a symptom of too much time using his tablet. Am I correct? A Yes, you quite possibly are. Many of us rely on smartphones and tablets to communicate for work and to keep in touch with family and friends throughout the day. Children also are spending more time with tablets or hand-held games and we may all be setting ourselves up for a future of pain and discomfort. Think about how many hours you, or your child, spend looking at hand-held screens. The chances are you do that in a hunched over position, with your head tilted down. Research has found that this position, called ‘text neck’, can lead to bad posture and cause pain in your neck, head, shoulders, spine and even down your arms. The average adult human head weighs around 10 pounds (4.5 kg); a child’s is not very much
less. This isn’t a problem when it’s stacked straight over your shoulders but, when we adopt a forward head posture as we update Facebook or read an email, the force on your neck increases hugely and this increases the further the forward you tilt your head. One study published by Surgical Technology International looked at how much force the head puts on the spine as the head tilts. If the head is tilted just 15 degrees forward, that puts 27 pounds (12 kg) of forces on the cervical spine and the supporting muscles. The farther the head tilts forward, the more pressure it puts on the spine. All of that pressure can lead to pain and pulled muscles. Cases of text neck are on the rise. People carry out their lives on their devices, they get carried away and don’t realise they need a break. This can cause head pain, neck pain, arm pain and numbness. Lynne Midwinter MCSP, Physio & Therapies Ltd
They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.
So what can you do to help yourself and your child while still keeping connected and entertained? • Hold your phone, tablet or laptop at eye level as much as possible. You could maybe build a stand for it (Lego would be great for this) so your child can still sit comfortably while using the device correctly. • Take frequent breaks. Maybe set a timer or alarm that reminds you to get up and walk around every 20 to 30 minutes. • Use voice recognition or make phone calls wherever possible. • If you work in an office, make sure your screen is set up so that when you look at it you are looking forward, with your head positioned squarely in line with your shoulders and spine. • Keep fit and active and build up the strength of your neck with core exercises. • Stand up straight - good posture, with the shoulders pulled back, keeps the body aligned in a neutral position. • Try the following stretches to improve blood flow and relieve tension: » Tuck the chin down toward the neck, then slowly raise it up toward the ceiling. » Rotate the head so that it is looking out over one shoulder, then turn slowly and rotate in the other direction. » Looking straight ahead tilt your right ear down to the right shoulder and repeat on the left. » Rotate the shoulders backwards while holding the arms down by the sides of the body. • Don’t ignore pain – if you have corrected your posture and you still have pain after a week visit a Physiotherapist for an assessment and treatment which will include self-help exercises and posture advice. The good news is that, with posture correction, some hands on treatment and some exercises, most cases of text neck resolve quickly in the hands of an experienced therapist!
