The jingling never stops

A

lot has been happening with Jo Jingles over the last few months. Jo Corbett,

who has run our local classes for over 10 years, has now also taken on the management of the Halifax and Huddersfield area. Jo says “It’s been an exciting time. My good friend Kerry, who managed the Halifax area, wanted to spend more time with her family so she asked me to look after all her lovely customers. I was delighted to rise to the challenge!” This comes after a busy summer for Jo and her family as they took Big Jo and his Jingling fun to both Car Fest North and South. Chris Evans, of Radio 2, had asked Jo Jingles if they could be there to entertain the children and Jo Corbett was happy to step in and spend each day in the Big Top tent with hundreds of children having a wonderful time; and they have already been booked for next year! Jo Jingles helps with positive developments and provides quality time for parent/carer and child together. Whether you are a first time parent or not, there’s no experiences as rewarding as those you have with your baby and child and Jo tells us she feels privileged that so many families allow her to participate in these very early years experiences with their children. As Jo explains, “A lot goes into running the business and the same is true of my classes. A lot of parents thank me for the time and thought that goes into planning each class so they remain fresh and exciting for both the carer and the child. Parents recognise the learning targets that are incorporated each week but we try to do it in such a fun way that the children just do not realise how much they are learning!” For more information contact Jo Corbett on 01706 212889 / www.jojingles.com/rossendale

For one night only the streets will be transformed – illuminated creatures will spring from darkened places and strange beings will dance down by the canal. Mesmerising fire-lit sculptures will appear in the most unexpected places and music will ring out. Magic will come to town”.

If you would like to be involved in the parade, head along to one of the workshops in the days before where you will find all the materials and expertise you need to make your own lantern. The Old Library

ased at 1 Parkside Road, Cornholme, The Old Library is a community building and café.

The Old Library came about as a result of the efforts of a group of local people with the vision to bring The Old Library back into community use. After much hard work from the trustees

6

atmosphere people are encouraged and supported to try new things and discover their creative abilities. The workshop has a colourful and eclectic range of craft supplies available, from fabric and felt, ribbons, flower and bird templates and feathers and sequins to stick on, so there’s plenty of choice. There’s a wide range of easy and fun activities to do, with things to suit different tastes and abilities, all with simple easy to follow instructions and someone on hand to help out. Owner Tansy Dyer says “It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone of any age or ability to get stuck into some fabulously fun and creative activities. We love holding craft parties and watching kids and adults discovering their creative side. It’s great when the workshop is covered with fabric scraps, buttons and sparkly things, and people are caught up and involved in what they’re making. Craft parties are suitable for everyone, boys and girls, children, teenagers and adults. We’ve had people making fabric flowers and jewellery, sock monsters, customising T-shirts and bags and a group was in recently making birthday bunting. It’s always fun and I find it amazing how

and a solid group of volunteers, The Old Library is now open and ready for visitors. The Old Library is a meeting space for families, older people, groups working together or friends meeting for a chat. We host an ever increasing range of groups and evening classes, such as job club and benefits advice and maths for adults and Kettlebell fitness. We also hold community events in collaboration with other Cornholme and Portsmouth organisations and artists. Housed in the community building is a Café, which provides good quality locally sourced and freshly made food and drinks to all. If you have a few hours spare and would like to learn new skills and meet new people, we are looking for volunteers to help run the café.

Café opening times are Mon-Wed 10 am -2 pm, Fri 10 am - 2 pm and 4-6 pm. The Old Library can be hired for your party or event. Coming soon, we will be holding a Mexican food night, planting a willow fence and holding Yule celebrations. Further information about our opening times, groups and classes can be found at our website www.oldlibrary. org.

out & about Manchester Christmas Markets www.manchester.gov.uk/markets

The stallholders are selling either local produce or European goods. Anything from unique jewellery, handmade bags, clothes and toys to Belgian chocolate and Dutch cheeses. There are also food court areas to keep you going through a long day of browsing and present buying, with a vast choice of street food from every corner of Europe. Paella anyone?

Markets are open: Fri 15th Nov – Sun 22nd Dec 7 days a week 10am to 7:30 (9.00 on Albert Square)

Top Tips to help you make the most of your day  Albert Square, right in front of the Town Hall, is the largest area of the market. This is where most of the hot foot outlets are and also where most of the crowds are. The area is cobbled so, especially if you are there at a particularly busy time, it’s not good for buggies and prams.  Before you go have a look at the website and download a map. The markets are all over the city centre  Albert Square also has a strict no dog policy (except for assistance dogs). Other market sites are more open and dogs are okay there, but not advised.  Evening times around the market are much busier than daytime. If you want to shop at leisure then weekdays are recommended. If you want a magical, Christmassy time with your children, head down there during the evenings.  Don’t forget it is all outdoors and it is cold at that time of year. Make sure you are all wrapped up warm, especially your toes!

 To cut down on litter every food and drink outlet has a deposit scheme on all mugs and glasses. It is £1 for glasses and £2 for mugs which you can either claim back when you return your empties, or keep as a souvenir.  There are plenty of loos around Manchester City Centre and some shops have agreed to open their facilities to all visitors, not just their own customers. Visit the Manchester Markets website for all the details.  The best way to get to Manchester from here is to take the train direct to Manchester Victoria. This saves on petrol and parking fees, not to mention the hassle of traffic and trying to find a parking space suitable for all day. There are market stalls within a few hundred meters of the station entrance. However see the table for a list of return (off peak) rail fares. A considerable saving can be made by joining the train in Littleborough!

page out &header about

Happa

Shores Hey Farm, Briercliffe, Burnley BB10 3QU 01282 455992 www.happa.org.uk

M

y daughter has recently decided that she is horseand-pony-mad; I have no idea where this obsession came from, but as we had a couple of hours spare on a Saturday afternoon in Burnley, I thought I would try and find somewhere where we could visit some.

By chance I came across HAPPA at Shores Hey Farm, Briercliffe in Burnley. It transpires that The Horses and Ponies Protection Association is one of the oldest and most respected charities for equine welfare. This rescue centre was founded in 1937, there has been a rescue centre in Burnley since the 1970’s and Shores Hey has been open since 1984. It was set up to help fight against the transportation of large horses to the continent for slaughter. It has developed extensively from there and has worked with various government committees to achieve improvements to legislation to ensure that horses, ponies and donkeys are protected from cruelty and neglect. That aside, the day-to-day objective at HAPPA is to investigate cruelty and neglect and to ensure that all rescued and abandoned animals are nursed lovingly back to health. Once the animals are fully recovered, they state that they never sell them but instead place them in caring private homes through a legally binding loan scheme or continue to care for them at one of their two Rescue centres.

Thus it was with a certain amount of wariness that we set off to visit HAPPA. I had never visited a Horse and Pony Rescue Centre before and I was unsure of what our afternoon would be like. As it turned out my concern was unfounded; we had a lovely enjoyable time. It is free to visit and explore, but a donation is requested when you leave. HAPPA relies heavily on this type of financial support and the work of many volunteers. The Rescue Centre itself is set in the glorious countryside above Briercliffe. It is easily located and there is sufficient parking. On arriving you ‘check-in’ at the Visitor Centre, which doubles as a café and shop, (a good way to finish when you have completed the tour around). Then you are free to wander around the various stable blocks ‘meeting’ HAPPA’s equine residents. On the day we visited there 52 horses, ponies and donkeys on site and as you tour around you get to know their names and stories. It’s hard to imagine the poorly state that some of them must have been in when they first arrived. The staff was very friendly, informative and keen to answer the many questions my daughter was “just dying to ask”. It was quite busy, with lots going on, not just people wandering around like us, but families visiting ponies they had ‘adopted’ and young people learning to groom horses. I thought it was a fantastic way to become involved and actually bond with the animals. There are various adoption and loan schemes available and again, members of staff are more than happy to give you details.

The site is very well equipped, including an equine shower and solarium area and an indoor arena to exercise animals, all of which has just recently been opened. Again you are free to wander around. There is also a ‘learning wall’ that was full of details and information about horses and ponies, which Cara found fascinating. We spent so long with the horses that there wasn’t time to go and enjoy the home cooked delights of the café, which, I understand, has a good reputation. When we were ‘checkingout’ I can say the food smelled and looked delicious and the prices were reasonable too! Here there were lots of horse and pony-orientated presents for sale; I bought a little booklet for £1.50 for Cara, detailing the stories of animals with a ‘HAPPA’ ending- she still refers to it several weeks later. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. It was good experience for both of us, as we have little contact with large animals. As it was so ‘hand-on’ (and that can be taken to whichever level you wish), we learned a lot as well. My daughter’s new found love of horses has intensified rather than diminished and so I can see this being a regular ‘haunt’ of ours on a Saturday afternoon! If you do go, and you do think it’s a great charity doing some fantastic work, please don’t forget to make a donation! By Tracey Sunderland

page focus header on: choosing a Primary School Place

T

he law of England and Wales states that “The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education suitable; a) to his age, ability, and aptitude, and b) to any special educational needs he may have, either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.”

The freedom to educate children at home is part of the education provision of our society, as is the option to pay for private education. But 93% of children in England attend free State Schools and, if your child turns 5 between

September 1st 2014 and August 31st 2015, now is the time to be looking at how you intend to educate your child, probably by deciding which school you would like them to attend and applying for a place.

How do I choose the best school for my child? There are a number of things you should consider when making this decision: • Does your child need special attention? Are they particularly bright or have particular behaviour patterns? Will the school offer support for Special Needs? • Does your child have specific areas of interest or are they particularly keen on sport? Does your chosen school have the equipment or structure to support these interest, such as bands, choirs, sports teams, computer suites or out-of-school activities? • Do you require wrap-around care? Does your chosen school provide breakfast clubs or after-school care? How much do they cost?

• How big is the school? How big are the classes and what age range is taught in each class? • Does the school suit your family’s religious beliefs? How do they handle religious education? • How would your child get to school? Is there a safe walking route or are school buses available? • Does the school have an active PTA? Would you like to be involved in this side of school life? • Does your child have a preference? Would they be happier if they stayed with their friends?

Open Days and Visiting Most Primary Schools have Open Days or will be happy to arrange for you to visit. Go prepared with an idea of what you are looking for. Some suggestions are: • A happy school with high morale • A warm and welcoming atmosphere • Cheerful and friendly children (and staff) • High quality and varied work, displayed with pride • Relaxed staff • Enthusiasric children who ask, as well as answer questions • An air of concentration and hard work, but don’t expect silence • Any other resources you or your child consider important, such as a good library, computer suite, sports facilities, arts and science equipment.

page focus header on: Applying for a Primary School Place - FAQs Who needs to apply and when?

Any child who was born between 1st September 2009 and 31st August 2010 will need to begin school in the next academic year. They don’t legally need to start until the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday, but Calderdale provides places for any eligible child from the beginning of September in the academic year in which they turn five. Also, children who attend an InfantOnly school, who are currently in year 2, also need to apply for a place at a Junior school in the same way. The application forms, known as the Common Preference Forms, will become available at the end of November 2013 and the forms must be submitted by Wednesday 15th January ‘14.

Where do I get a form?

If your child is already attending a nursery or Infant-Only school, you will probably be given a copy of the form and the accompanying booklet when it

18

becomes available. If not the form can be obtained from your local primary school, Halifax Central Library or will be available in full on the Calderdale Council website, www.calderdale.gov.uk. The form can also be filled in on-line if preferred.

Is the form difficult to fill in?

No. The form itself is very straight forward, with space for you to name three schools of your choice. All will be considered equally and, only if your child is eligible to attend more than one school, will your preference (the order you placed them on the form) be taken into account.

What does “Admissions Criteria” mean?

Many schools have more applications than they have places. Therefore they must apply some rules to decide which children are offered places. These must be clear, fair and objective but do vary from school to school. The details for each school are covered in detail in the “Information for Parents” booklet that

accompanies the Common Preference Form. It may be worth reading these carefully before choosing the order for the schools you put on the form.

What if my application is late?

There are some admissible reasons for being late with the application form but, otherwise, your application will only be considered after all other places are allocated.

When will I find out which school we have been offered?

Everyone will receive an offer of a school place on the same day. That will be Wednesday 16th April ‘14

What if we are not happy with the decision?

The first thing to do is put your child name on the re-allocation list. The closing date for this process will be Wednesday 30th April ‘14. Details will be sent out with the placement offer letter. Otherwise you have a right to appeal.

hese are wonderfully simple and great fun to make with your children.

You can hang them from your Christmas tree or give them as presents. Optionally, put on a heart-warming family Xmas film, make big mugs of hot chocolate, sit back, relax and scoff the lot.

Method

For the cookies 140g icing sugar; sieved 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg yolk 250g butter, (at room temperature) cut into small cubes 375g plain flour; sieved To decorate 200g icing sugar; sieved Food colouring (optional) Edible gold and silver balls / sprinkly cake decorations.

1. Tip the icing sugar, vanilla extract, egg yolk and butter into a mixing bowl then stir together. Add the flour and mix to a firm dough. Shape the dough into two flat discs and wrap in clingfilm. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

place them too close together as the cookies will expand a little. If you want to hang the cookies on your Xmas tree, use a skewer to make a hole in the top of each cookie. Later, you can thread some ribbon through the holes.

2. Heat oven to 190oC (fan 170oC) / gas5 and line two baking sheets with non-stick parchment paper.

4. Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden. Place the biscuits onto a wire rack to cool.

3. Gently roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about the thickness of two £1 coins. Using cookie cutters, cut out Christmassy shapes and place onto the baking sheets. Don’t

5. Mix the icing sugar with a few drops of cold water to make a thick, but still runny, icing. Colour with edible food colouring if you like. Spread it over the cooled biscuits and decorate.

over to you local mum turns author

he Scallymag talks to Liz Flanagan, a local parent and author of two new books for 5-7-olds: Starlight Grey and Cara and the Wizard. How did you start writing?

I’ve always loved writing and I remember scribbling some rambling tales involving my pets when I was very small. In my twenties I worked in children’s book publishing and sometimes my role as an editor meant I had to write texts too. I soon realised this was my favourite part of the job.

What gave you the idea for these books?

These books were commissioned directly by Barefoot Books. I sent some picture book texts to Tessa Strickland, the Editor-in-Chief, but she said they were too similar to some of their other books. I thought this was just a nice way of saying ‘no thanks’ but then she got in touch to commission a series of six folktale retellings. We had a lovely day in her friends’ library choosing which stories from around the world to retell. Some of the original books were very old, so it felt really exciting. My brief was to write simple but lively texts that would appeal to newly confident readers, full of action and adventure.

20

What do your own daughters think?

My children (now aged seven and nine) were very interested in the whole process. My eldest daughter was seven when I wrote the stories, so I tested all my first drafts on her. I knew if she struggled with any vocabulary then I needed to think again about my choice of words. Both girls loved being my first editors and were very frank with me when it came to giving feedback!

What are you working on now?

I’m doing lots of workshops and readings. I really love this contact with my readers. It is fantastic to read the books aloud and get that direct response from the children listening. I’ve been really impressed with the stories children write in these sessions – they can be astonishingly inventive and imaginative at a very young age. I also run creative writing activities alongside the readings. Please see my website www.lizflanagan.co.uk for more information. Barefoot Books have commissioned two new books – about princesses this time - the first of which should be published next year. It’s a retelling of a Cambodian folktale about a princess who is a brilliant engineer! I am also writing a novel for older children aged around nine to twelve.

Forthcoming events

Liz will be hosting some FREE Festive events including Storytelling and Face-painting at The Old Treehouse, Market Street, Hebden Bridge If you and your little one would like to go along, please sign up in the shop as places are limited. Parents are welcome to join in or browse in The Old Treehouse while children take part. Thursday 5th December 5.30 - 6pm Thursday 12th December 5.30 - 6pm

family page header health Physio & Therapies in Todmorden offers treatments for a wide range of family health issues. If you have any questions, queries or concerns you would like to ask an expert about please get in touch by any of the methods shown on page 3.

I have recently started getting a sudden pain in the front of my knee just below my knee cap when walking the kids to school and when I go for a run a couple of times a week. The pain happens when I walk or run down hills and I find I am going down the stairs like my Gran, one step at a time because the pain can be so bad. My friends have said it is my ligaments or my cartilage and the GP said that it’s probably ‘wear and tear’, to take Ibuprofen and to lose some weight. I have already lost a stone but the pain is getting worse and the Ibuprofen doesn’t help. What can I do? I don’t want to end up like my mum who can’t walk far without constant pain in her joints. Pain in our joints that occurs to hold the knee joint over the while we are moving is usually foot and ankle. Normally our caused by a mechanical knee cap moves up and down problem within the joint. Most in a groove at the end of the problems occur because the thigh bone so we can bend joint is not staying in its’ proper and straighten our knee to alignment so things catch walk and run normally. If there or rub causing pain and/or is a problem with any of the inflammation. leg muscles due to weakness, The knee is a common site tightness or injury the tendency for this type of problem. As we is for the knee cap to slide up walk and run our muscles have

They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.

and down slightly out of it’s groove. As this happens the knee cap often tilts or moves sideways, catching and rubbing structures inside the knee and this causes pain at the front of the knee, which is termed ‘Anterior Knee Pain’. Another cause can be due to problems with arch collapse in the foot. This is often due to how our feet have grown, which is often an inherent trait from our parents or it can be caused by problems with muscle control of the legs and hips and can be exacerbated by being a bit overweight. The reason the pain is worse when you walk or run down hills or use the stairs is because we have to bend our knees more when on hills or stairs and the more bent your knee is the harder it is for your muscles to keep the knee in the right place. The kneecap is pulled harder into the groove on the thigh when the knee is bent. The harder the kneecap pulls, the more strength our muscles need to control the kneecap. If the pain only occurs when you move it is unlikely there is any inflammation and so medicines such as Ibuprofen will not seem to help, especially at low doses. If the pain continues without treatment for some time you may start to find the ache occurs when you are not walking or running as the pinched structures start to become inflamed due to the repeated rubbing in the knee. Physiotherapy is a great starting point for you. At an assessment with one of our Physiotherapists we will look at what is causing the problem in your knee. It we think the cause is coming from your feet you could see our Podiatrist to have any problems in the feet investigated fully. You may need shoe inserts that will make your walking better aligned, thus stopping the poor kneecap movement and rubbing. If the problem is more with your muscles you may need some

stretches or muscle exercises to hold the kneecap in its’ correct placement. Sometimes people have problems with both the feet and the muscles and require both therapies to rid them of the pain fully and for the long term. Doing the specific exercises that we can teach you it may take up to 6 weeks to see an improvement in the pain, but these exercises are very successful in fully resolving your pain. Left untreated anterior knee pain will lead to the ‘wear and tear’ the GP spoke of as the cartilage in our knees and hips wears out and becomes a chronic problem that cannot be healed. If we keep our joints working correctly as we age this ‘wear and tear’ on our joints is less likely and we decrease the risk of conditions like osteoarthritis, chronic knee, hip or back pain, ongoing disability and the likelihood of surgery to replace our knees and hips in future. If you would like to book a FREE 10 minute check up to see if we can help you with this or any other joint problems please contact our reception team on 01706 819464.
