valley of lights
F
or this first time this year, the whole of the Upper Calder valley, from Todmorden to Mytholmroyd, will work together to produce a spectacular Christmas display along the whole valley. There are lots of ways everyone can get involved.
Timetable of events
Todmorden will start the celebrations with a huge day full of events on Saturday 24th November. The baton will then be passed to Hebden Bridge for their big evening event on Thursday 29th November and finally Mytholmroyd will begin their Christmas countdown on Saturday 1st December. There are three Big Celebration Nights, one for each town, where there will be canal-side and
Canal-side market will be all day from noon until late, on Fielden Wharf and the Market. The canal boat light flotilla, on Fielden Wharf, will begin at 4.00pm. The Lantern Parade will begin at Bramsche Square at 5.00pm. The Fire Finale will be on Bramsche Square at 5.45pm.
One final event, to pull the whole valley together, will take place on Thursday 29th November. A spectacular
Night Bike Light Ride. The Christmas Lights from Todmorden will be symbolically taken down the valley to Hebden Bridge then on to Mytholmroyd by a huge team of illuminated cyclists. Beginning at Todmorden High School, where the cyclists will assemble and deck up their bikes, the parade will begin properly at Bramsch Square in Todmorden from 6.30pm onwards and will leave town
4
night time markets with the best local produce, craft, food & gifts. There will be canal boat light flotillas and the famous Handmade Parade will create huge spectacles through the town centres with lantern parades, music, performance, massive light and fire sculptures, and not forgetting the Christmas Lights switch on events. Just about as much fun as you can cram into one night!
at 7.15pm, down Halifax Road, heading for Hebden Bridge. They are expected to arrive in Hebden Bridge at around 7.45pm where they will join in the evening’s events there for half an hour before setting off again to take the Christmas spirit to Mytholmroyd at 8.15pm. They should arrive at Mytholmroyd Community Centre by 9.00pm. There seems to be no limit to how big this event can be. If you would like to get your bike out and join the fun, please visit the website www.valleyoflights.co.uk for details of how to get involved. This whole event is in support of Welcome to Yorkshire’s “Back Le Bid” to bring the Tour de France to our valley next year. Something that will have an enormous impact on the place we live in; for business, for tourism and to show the world just how beautiful this area is.
(correct at time of going to press):

news Christmas Cards
F
Still Delivered for 20p!
or over 25 years the 8th/26th Calder Valley Scouts, based at Central Methodist Church Todmorden, have been running a Christmas Card delivery service to Todmorden addresses.
They started when the government relaxed the Post Office monopoly for the month before Christmas, to allow charities to deliver Christmas cards. The rules are that only Christmas Cards are delivered and that all the proceeds go to charity. In the first year we charged 5p per card. Since then there have been a couple of price rises but the present charge has remained at 20p for several years. The money goes to support our Group
I
minibus, providing transport over the years for our various camps and activities. The system we have developed for processing the cards is relatively simple. We sell our own stamps in various outlets throughout the town. There are also ‘Post Boxes’ at these outlets where customers can post their cards. These post boxes are emptied on a regular basis and the cards sorted into rounds. Each round has a ‘Postman’ who delivers the cards in their free time. The volunteers consist of leaders, parents, supporters, and some of the older boys. We will deliver to any Todmorden address and undertake to deliver all cards by Christmas; however we do not offer a next day service as some of our helpers can only deliver cards at weekends. It must be emphasised that our stamps are not valid for the Royal Mail and any
cards bearing just our stamps, posted in Royal Mail post-boxes, may well result in the recipient being charged. The service means a lot of hard work in the weeks before Christmas by a willing group of volunteers. However we feel that the rewards, i.e. the opportunity to have our own transport, make it more than worthwhile. None of the shops where we have postboxes make any money out of helping us, and we are extremely grateful for the time and effort which they put in. If there are any queries then please phone Dave Payne on 01706 816568. If there is no reply, then please leave a message and your contact details, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

LANTERN WORKSHOPS
n the days leading up to the special events, a fantastic team of Handmade Parade artists will host free lantern-making workshops in each town. There will be loads of free angelic activities for children, including the opportunity to make lanterns for the Valley of Lights Lantern Parade in Todmorden later the same day, or for one of the other parades later in the week. W
e’re not short of Pantomimes and Christmas plays to keep the whole family entertained this year.
From 4th to 8th December, with a crash of drums and a flash of light, the Todmorden Hippodrome Youth Theatre turn the spotlight on Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sensational family musical, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. HYT are delighted to be one of the first youth groups in the UK to present the complete West End version of the show. This magical musical is full of unforgettable songs including Any Dream Will Do, Go Go Go Joseph and Close Every Door To Me, all brought to life on stage for you complete with a live show orchestra. Tickets can be bought at the Todmorden Tourist Information Centre or on-line through Ticket Source. Just visit www.todhip.org for more information. From 8th to 22nd December, Role With It Productions, in association with the Helen Wilman School of Dance and Hebden Bridge Town Hall would like to take you on a journey to a Winter Wonderland this Christmas with their performance of ‘Nutcracker’. Adapted from the original tale by ETA Hoffmann, the story takes place on Christmas Eve when a visit by Maria’s Godfather Drosselmeier leads to untold adventures. The tale of Nutcracker was written in 1816 and has fascinated and inspired artists, composers and audiences for almost 200 years. It is a world of magical pleasures. Performances will be in the Waterfront Hall of Hebden Bridge Town Hall. Tickets are available from the Town Hall Box Office or by ringing 01422 417300. Adults £8, Children £6. On Saturday 22nd December at 11.00am, there will be a Free Family Film at Todmorden Hippodrome. You may have seen The ‘Wizard of Oz’ on TV, but have you seen it on the BIG screen? Todmorden’s wonderful Hippodrome once housed the ‘Electric Palace’ cinema. To celebrate the Hippodrome’s screening of the original film 70 years ago, we are showing the 70th anniversary digitally re-mastered version, which basically means more vibrant, crisp pictures that just add to the fun. Feel free to dress up or even sing-along if you dare. This special event is part of the run up to the re-launch of a new ‘Electric Palace’ cinema at the Todmorden Hippodrome. Admission is free, donations are welcome. On 29th, 30th and 31st December, at Hebden Bridge Little Theatre, Storymagic Theatre presents the classic tale of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, with a new twist. All the classic characters will be there but, will we see the giant? Won’t we see the giant? With the whole family’s enjoyment in mind, each morning (11am) performance will be Toddler Friendly with the house light remaining on throughout the show, and some of the bangs, flashes and scary bits left out. Tickets cost £9 for adults, £7 for children and are available from Hebden Bridge Tourist Information Centre or by calling 01706 810788 From 16th to 19th January, St Josephs Players will present ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at the Hippodrome Theatre. Tickets are available from Todmorden Tourist Information Centre.

Heritage, Fun and History (…and it’s free!) By Melanie Hill
Whether you’re 8 or 80 there is a myriad of displays to capture your attention. From the wonderous Hall of Steel - the architectural centre-piece of the museum - which can be seen from every floor, to the awe-inspiring Oriental Gallery there is something to captivate even the youngest of visitors… for a while at least! Of course we all know how long our children’s attention span is! So the mediaeval themed playroom is a thankful retreat where kids can dress up, play games and take part in crafts. Then it’s all back to the educational tour of the museum, which really is fascinating, with exhibits depicting episodes in history from across the globe to more recent events closer to home in West Yorkshire. The museum never fails to impress due to its range of historical artifacts and live presentations. We sat on the front row for an impressive demonstration about the skills of the Samurai Warrior which made my daughter jump out of her skin…before she burst into fits
of laughter! I’ve always believed that bringing history to life in the way that they do at the Royal Armouries truly gives a glimpse into the past and I’m pretty sure our daughter will remember the tale of the Samurai forever more because of the real-life feelings this demonstration evoked in her. This is a place that our family will want to visit again. For little children you can’t really take everything in on one visit. To appreciate everything the museum has to offer you need to spend at least a whole day there. But that’s all fine because admission is FREE! The country may be tightening its purse strings but there are still some fantastic days out to be had without having to part with a penny!

Part 4 - Winter Warmers
t can’t be a coincidence that parks up here often have hothouses in them. Let’s face it, the weather’s rubbish, but children still need to be exercised. Choose one of these parks and
shiver smugly, aware that soon you will be basking in tropical warmth. Stretching the Scally boundaries slightly, first up is Roundhay Park in Leeds which boasts a brand, spanking new playground and Tropical World. Next is Manor Heath playground and Jungle Experience in Halifax, a must for quail fanciers everywhere. Lastly Todmorden’s Centre Vale Park and its warm but gently decaying Tropical House. You must pay for entry to Tropical World (£3.30 adults, under 5s free), and the Jungle Experience (£1 adults). Its not much and your extremities will thank you as they defrost and your kids should too as they get up close to huge Niger catfish, meerkats, gigantic technicolour butterflies and the downright weird axolotl.

It’s a playground beloved of toddlers and louche teenagers alike. At the opposite end of the park is the Tropical House. It’s not the slickest of hot houses, the empty enclosures at the far end of the reptile section give it a melancholy air but on the plus side, the Axolotl has stopped peeling, the terrapins are lurking and the chinchillas are bonkers. Who do they play the radio for? Does the Tarantula ever move? Questions to ponder as you sit in the warmth and watch the fish.

It’s a short stroll from the good all-rounder playground to the Jungle Experience. Undulating wooden walkways lead you through different ‘experiences’. Land That Time Forgot seeks to engage dino-loving juniors and Savage Garden showcases varieties of carnivorous plants. Finally you come to the wacky shapes and colours of the butterflies and also the ridiculously cute Chinese quails that scootle about, frantic and dumpy. Terrapins and Koi conclude the circuit.
The playground’s less than six months old and full of funky distractions. Inspired by Tropical World it enjoys a snake seat, wooden crocodile and a Meerkat mound. When you’ve had enough of the virtual version, trot up the road to the real thing and discover that there is such a thing as Spiny Mice - and they’re cute. For Deadly 60 fans, look out for the Morelets crocodiles - stars of a recent episode.

pagefeature header choosing a Primary School Place
T
he law of England and Wales states that “The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education suitable; a) to his age, ability, and aptitude, and b) to any special educational needs he may have, either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.”
The freedom to educate children at home is part of the education provision of our society, as is the option to pay for private education. But 93% of children in England attend free State Schools and, if your child turns 5 between
September 1st 2013 and August 31st 2013, now is the time to be looking at how you intend to educate your child, probably by deciding which school you would like them to attend and applying for a place.
How do I choose the best school for my child? There are a number of things you should consider when making this decision: • Does your child need special attention? Are they particularly bright or have particular behaviour patterns? Will the school offer support for Special Needs? • Does your child have specific areas of interest or are they particularly keen on sport? Does your chosen school have the equipment or structure to support these interest, such as bands, choirs, sports teams, computer suites or out-of-school activities? • Do you require wrap-around care? Does your chosen school provide breakfast clubs or after-school care? How much do they cost?
• How big is the school? How big are the classes and what age range is taught in each class? • Does the school suit your family’s religious beliefs? How do they handle religious education? • How would your child get to school? Is there a safe walking route or are school buses available? • Does the school have an active PTA? Would you like to be involved in this side of school life? • Does your child have a preference? Would they be happier if they stayed with their friends?
Open Days and Visiting Most Primary Schools have Open Days or will be happy to arrange for you to visit. Go prepared with an idea of what you are looking for. Some suggestions are: • A happy school with high moral • A warm and welcoming atmosphere • Cheerful and friendly children (and staff) • High quality and varied work, displayed with pride • Relaxed staff • Enthusiasric children who ask, as well as answer questions • An air of concentration and hard work, but don’t expect silence • Any other resources you or your child consider important, such as a good library, computer suite, sports facilities, arts and science equipment.

feature Applying for a Primary School Place - FAQs Who needs to apply and when?
Any child who was born between 1st September 2008 and 31st August 2009 will need to begin school in the next academic year. They don’t legally need to start until the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday, but Calderdale provides places for any eligible child from the beginning of September in the academic year in which they turn five. Also, children who attend an Infant Only school, who are currently in year 2, also need to apply for a place at a Junior school in the same way. The application forms, known as the Common Preference Forms, will become available at the end of November 2011 and the forms must be submitted by Tuesday 15th January ‘13.
Where do I get a form?
If your child is already attending a nursery, you will probably be given a copy of the form and the accompanying booklet when it becomes available. If not
the form can be obtained from your local primary school, Halifax Central Library or will be available in full on the Calderdale Council website, www.calderdale.gov. uk. The form can also be filled in on-line if preferred.
Is the form difficult to fill in?
No. The form itself is very straight forward, with space for you to name three schools of your choice. All will be considered equally and, only if your child is eligible to attend more than one school, will your preference (the order you placed them on the form) be taken into account.
What does “Admissions Criteria” mean?
Many schools have more applications than they have places. Therefore they must apply some rules to decide which children are offered places. These must be clear, fair and objective but do vary from school to school. The details for each school are covered in detail in the “Information for Parents” booklet that
18
accompanies the Common Preference Form. It may be worth reading these carefully before choosing the order for the schools you put on the form.
What if my application is late?
There are some admissible reasons for being late with the application form but, otherwise, you application will only be considered after all other places are allocated.
When will I find out which school we have been offered?
Everyone will receive an offer of a school place on the same day. That will be Tuesday 16th April ‘13
What if we are not happy with the decision?
The first thing to do is put your child name on the re-allocation list. The closing date for this process will be Tuesday 30th April ‘13. Details will be sent out with the placement offer letter. Otherwise you have a right to appeal.
bloke in a kitchen White Christmas Chocolate By Richard Dalby
T
hese delicious seasonal treats, packed with dried fruit, are very easy to make, which children, adults and Father Christmas will all love. They would also make a lovely present.
Whilst sinking your teeth into the heavenly, rich, white chocolate and double cream, you can take solace in the fact that cranberries, dried apricots and pistachio nuts are all considered ‘super foods’. The cranberries detox your blood system and ward off colds and flu; dried apricots are a great source of iron and are rich in
tryptophan, which the body converts into the feel-good chemical serotonin. Finally pistachios are scientifically proven to lower cholesterol. And chocolate is yummy. So it’s a win, win situation all round! Give them a try, and I hope you have fun making these for your family.

Hopefully this is the first of many contributions by our “Bloke in a Kitchen”. Richard is a single dad to Amelie and has recently rediscovered the joys of cooking and baking, especially when sharing both the preparation and eating experience with Amelie. All the recipes he produces are economical and achievable on a budget without the use of weird or fancy ingredients and, where possible, have been tried and tested with help from Amelie. For more ideas from Richard find him on Facebook - www.facebook.com/BlokeInAKitchen

Line a 20 x 30cm dish or baking tin with baking parchment, leaving some overhanging the edges, which will help later on when you lift out the chocolate. Bring a pan of water to the boil. Once at a fast boil, turn off the heat. Place the chocolate and cream in a large bowl. Place the bowl over the pan, making sure that it does not touch the water. Leave to stand for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the chocolate to slowly melt. Add the pistachios, dried apricots, cranberries and raisins/ sultanas into the melted chocolate and mix well to coat. Spoon the mixture into the prepared container or tin and level the surface with a spatula. Place in the fridge and leave for 2 hours, or more, until completely set. Remove from the container using the overhanging parchment ‘handle’, place on a board and cut into bite sized pieces. You could also use metal cookie cutters to make star/Xmas tree/holly shapes. I tried a star shape, but DID find it tricky to be honest (I am just a bloke after all). There will doubtless be pieces left over, which I’m afraid you’ll have to eat there and then. A tough job but someone’s got to do it.
6.
Store in the fridge until ready to eat.

Christmas At Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice
C
hristmas is a special time of year. Families look forward to spending time together and parents enjoy watching their children’s faces light up as they unwrap their presents from Santa.
But for some, Christmas can be difficult, especially for those whose children have life limiting conditions. That is why The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice seeks to support such families so that they too can make the most of the festive season together. The hospice, based at Russell House, Huddersfield, offers respite, end of

life care, and practical and emotional support in a bid to ease the strain life limiting conditions can bring on all family members. It aims to be a home from home for poorly children and is equipped with a sensory room, a state-of-the-art music facility, a hydrotherapy pool, The Snowflake Suite, which is a selfcontained flat for families, and much more to make a child’s time there the best that it can be. Its Hospice at Home service currently supports over 50 families and it is hoped when the brand new facility opens its doors, care can be extended to many more. Currently, 700 children in Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield are in need of support and there are many ways in which you can help. Vicki Finlay, Director of Care, said: “We will be welcoming children and families into the hospice in the near future to offer the special care and respite they need. Our focus is to ease stress and create shared experiences and opportunities for special memories that can always be cherished. “What we need now is your continued support to help us cover the on going cost of care at Christmas both at the hospice and through our Hospice at Home service. Our fundraising team have pulled together some fun ideas for Christmas activities to help you get involved and help raise the important funds we need.” If you’re a chocoholic, then the Christmas Chube Challenge is for you.
The charity is seeking supporters to fill empty chocolate tubes with either 20p pieces or £1 coins. A tube of 20p pieces can pay for one complimentary therapy session and a tube of £1 coins can pay for an hour of specialist play in the hydrotherapy pool. The charity’s One Special Gift Campaign provides an opportunity to help the hospice via one of its 11 charity shops. Simply take one good quality item, whether that is clothing, a toy, a piece of furniture or anything else, along to your local hospice store for them to sell. Your gift will help improve the quality of merchandise available, boost sales and raise the profile of the shops. On December 3, it is Purple Pound Day where you can take £1 to work or school to show your support for the hospice while hosting a dress down day. If you or your company would like to give a gift to a child and their family this Christmas, there’s no better gift than a memory. A play session for brothers and sisters costs £55, £150 will buy complimentary therapy sessions for 10 parents, £450 will pay for 10 Hospice at Home visits while £7,000 will cover the running costs of the hospice for a day. I have been looking into Homeopathy since my children were born but I’m never sure when it would be most appropriate. Can you help?. There are so many choices to make as parents these days. Natural childbirth or not? To breast or bottle feed? Washable or disposable nappies? Family bed or cot? How many years between children? What type of preschool or schooling? The choices and options for many families in our times are endless. So, too is the kind of medical care to use. How much is safe to treat at home? When is it imperative to get the opinion of a trained medical professional? What if my partner and I don’t agree? In my last 10 years of practice I have had the pleasure
of working with many families, offering natural medicine choices for health care issues. Some patients come to me already certain they want to go the natural way. Others come in not really knowing the type of work I do as a homeopath. But they know someone who was helped with a similar problem, so they want the same “cure.” Still others arrive quite sceptical, having been disappointed by previous therapies and attempts to help their child. With homeopathy we can offer a non-toxic and effective approach to first-aid, acute, and chronic health issues that arise in the course of raising a family.
They have a wide range of specialists including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Nutritionist, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, Homeopath and other Therapists to answer your questions.
Answered by Emma Sweaney RSHom, Homeopath at Physio & Therapies For first-aid and acute conditions, in the vast majority of situations, there are a limited number of homeopathic remedies that would be considered. Remedies that are used over and over again include: Aconite, Belladonna, Pulsatilla, Chamomilla, Sulphur, Arnica, Mercurius, and Arsenicum album. I truly do not know where I would be as a Homeopath without these dear friends in the medicine cabinet! Thankfully, there are wonderful books on acute prescribing, written in a way that enables a parent to choose the correct remedy for things like bee stings, sore throats, teething, and diarrhoea. Most of these books will also caution parents as to when it is essential to seek further medical care. No one wants to put a child at risk because of a philosophical belief in natural treatment. There is a time and a place for all types of medicine. For children with chronic illness, constitutional homeopathy offers one type of approach that addresses the underlying causes of the illness and hopefully presents solutions to difficult physical, emotional, behavioural, and psychological problems. In constitutional treatment (for both children and adults), we give a homeopathic remedy for the whole person - their physical, mental, and emotional state. I spend a fair amount of time trying to help people understand what it is I do and how the homeopath works. I take as much time as is necessary for the parent to learn that all aspects of the child will be important to me. I need to understand not just the particular diagnosis, but also how they experience their problem in all the minute details. I need to understand little things, like what and how
they eat and how they sleep; things related to temperament and personality, like how they behave with new children or if they’re more of a leader or a follower. I explain how I will be interested in the mother’s pregnancy and in the child’s earliest months, their development as well as their experience of school and their social lives. We try to put the child’s illnesses into the context of the rest of their lives and understand them in a complete way. Naturally, I will be observing the relationship between parent and child, how clingy they are, how they respond to limit -setting, how they communicate with each other-all of these are important to prescribing the correct remedy to help the child with whatever complaint caused the parent to make the appointment. For this sort of constitutional care, it is good to have an objective person prescribe (i.e., not the parent!) and to follow the child over time. During constitutional care, some homeopaths will ask you not to treat your child at home for firstaid or acute conditions so as not to interfere with their treatment. Other homeopaths may feel fine about home care. So whether your child is prone to first-aid or acute illnesses or has a more chronic disease, having homeopathy more available than ever before, gives many families the choice of using this safe and effective approach. If you would like to know more about how I could help you or your child, I would be happy to talk over the phone or come and meet me, in person, at my clinic at Physio and Therapies.
