he Greater Kansas City Home & Lifestyle Show, produced by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City, is pleased to announce that KC’s very own TV celebrity designer Tamara Day will be headlining the 2020 show on Saturday, March 14. Presenting on the Main Stage, Day will talk about some of the local vendors she often works with when remodeling homes. Afterward, she will meet fans and answer their questions on the show floor. Some of the vendors she utilizes will also be on site to meet with attendees regarding their home improvement projects. Day seeks to make the aspirational attainable for her clients, fans and the future homebuyers of her renovation projects. Her style, coined “Laid Back Luxe” is synonymous with blending glamour, comfort and family into the style and function of the spaces she designs – something she personally prioritizes as a busy wife and mother of four. Annual Clay Shoot a Hit

Teachers, Realtors Among Attendees to Onsite Construction 101
A
pproximately 25 people attended the HBA’s Onsite Home Construction 101 on Oct. 17 at Staley Farms Villas. Ranging from teachers to realtors to bankers, participants toured different phases of the home building process while Brenner Holland, Hunt Midwest, and Matt Ernst, Ernst Brothers Construction, provided valuable insight on what goes into developing, permitting, framing, and inspecting a new home. The HBA hosts this event at least once a year, so keep an eye out for the next one in Fall 2020!

KCHBA Participates in Roundtable with Federal Reserve Chairman
C
hairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System Jerome Powell was in Kansas City last month as part of his “Fed Listens” tour. Following the Fed Listens event, United States Senator Jerry Moran (KS) invited Chairman Powell and Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Esther George for a roundtable discussion with banking, civic and business leaders from the Kansas City region to discuss the state of the economy and economic outlooks in the construction, agriculture, manufacturing sectors. Participating in the roundtable was KCHBA Executive Vice President Will Ruder, who had the opportunity to share the residential construction industry’s perspective on the KC housing market and the current challenges the industry is facing. “As the Voice of the Housing Industry in Kansas City, the KCHBA is the premier advocate for Kansas City area residential construction industry,” said Ruder. “I was honored to represent the members of our organization at this discussion and I am thankful that Chairman Powell, President George, and Senator Moran were so receptive to our message.”

OATC, Kearney Students Tour Parade Homes

s part of Careers in Construction Month in October, students from Olathe Advanced Technical Center (OATC) and Kearney High School learned about the residential construction industry by touring homes at various stages of the construction process, starting with the foundation stage and ending with finished Parade homes. The goals of the tours were to introduce students to the building process and explain the career opportunities available to them in the residential construction industry.
On Oct. 9, Shawn Woods of Ashlar Homes led 30 OATC students through Parade homes built by Prieb Homes, Roeser Homes, James Engle Custom Homes, and Hilmann Home Building Inc. Also in attendance were OATC Teacher Dave Pfortmiller and OATC Job Coach Tom Alumbaugh.
“College is not a necessary evil,” said Shawn Woods, president of Ashlar Homes and a tour guide. “Money is not out of reach.”
Students were able to ask questions to the builders guiding their tours and gain valuable insight regarding different aspects of the industry.

Foundation Donates Over $8,000 to Noah’s Bandage Project
T
he HBA’s Foundation and Nebraska Furniture Mart partnered with Noah’s Bandage Project for the 2019 Fall Parade Awards Celebration in an effort to raise money for childhood cancer research. The Foundation is pleased to announce that it was able to donate $8,500 to Noah’s Bandage Project.

OSHA the Topic of Missouri Combined Area Council
W
hen an OSHA inspector comes to your site, the first thing you should do is sit down with him to talk about why he or she is there, what specifically the inspector is wanting to see, and how long he or she expects the inspection to take,” said Spencer Fane Attorney Andrew Brought at last month’s Missouri Combined Area Council, which took place on Oct. 30 at Staley Farms Golf Club.
The focus of this event was the best practices for handling government inspections from OSHA and EPA. Brought began with statistics pertaining to worker safety and asked questions to attendees to gauge understanding. He then went on to provide OSHA and EPA updates, as well as provide tips. Brought revealed the top 10 most frequently cited violations of 2018, including fall protection, scaffolding, and ladders to name a few. He also shared the do’s and don’ts of safety incentive programs and how to implement those successfully. “Are safety incentives, such as offering a bonus for going a full year without an injury, a good idea?” asked Brought. They can be but can also lead to employees not reporting injuries, according to Brought. “If you’re going to do this you also need to provide incentives for reporting unsafe conditions,” he said.
“If an inspector wants to speak with an employee on site that’s fine if it’s a fairly quick conversation,” said Brought, “but if the inspector says he wants to sit down one-on-one with someone for a half hour or more, that’s a red flag that there’s a problem.”
Brought spoke about what employers should expect before, during, and after an inspection and what to do in case a citation is issued.

ome builders on the 2020 Artisan Home Tour gathered last month for a launch party where they were paired with youth ambassadors from JDRF, the tour’s community partner. Together, the builders and ambassadors will raise awareness of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and of the Artisan Tour leading up to the tour in June 2020. What does the HBA mean to you on a personal level? Lambie: I spend a lot of time working with cities on code adoptions, zoning matters, and the code board of appeals. I think it is very important that more builders and developers get involved to help the cause.
e sat down with Jim Lambie of Lambie Custom Homes to talk about his 40+ years in the homebuilding industry.
Why did you choose to become part of the homebuilding industry? Lambie: I enjoyed working with my hands, having been a trim carpenter in high school and through college, and designing homes and subdivisions.
What is your favorite memory of the HBA? Lambie: The first year I started my company I was written up by the KC Star. Bob Boillier read the article and called me to welcome me into the business and offered to mentor me. He was a great man.
Why did you feel it was important to donate to the HBA building remodel? Lambie: I donated to the HBA remodel because George Schluter asked me to. George does more for the HBA and builders citywide than anyone else has. He is great for the industry.
What do you like most about what you do? Lambie: Creating new and exciting space for people to raise their families in and building their dream homes.
How has the HBA impacted your business? Lambie: The HBA gives companies credibility and a great presence with the Parade of Homes. They also help control costs by working with municipalities and politicians.

Gary Kerns Inducted into Past Presidents’ Club
T
he annual past presidents’ dinner was held Oct. 30 at Summit Grill in the Northland. Past HBA presidents welcomed Gary Kerns into the group with fanfare as they gave Gary the official past presidents medal and pin. Kerns is president of Gary Kerns Homebuilders, LLC, which has been a member of the HBA since 1999. Kerns has served as president of the Home Builders Association of Missouri, is chair of the HBA’s Membership Committee and sits on the committees for the Parade of Homes and the PAC. He has been a member of the HBA’s Executive Committee since 2015 and a member of its Board of Directors since 2007. As HBA president, Kerns provided leadership regarding the HBA’s position on issues affecting the home-building industry at the local, state and national levels. Congratulations, Gary!

Single-Family Permits Slowed in September
T
he number of single-family housing permits issued in September in the Kansas City metro decreased from the prior month but showed more activity than September 2018, according to the monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. The organization reported a total of 396 single-family homes permitted in Sept., resulting in a 27 percent decrease in year-to-date permitting as compared to the first nine months of 2018. “While our overall numbers are lower than this time last year, permitting has picked up this fall and builder confidence in the market for newly built single-family homes is up in October,” said KCHBA Executive Vice President Will Ruder. “We believe our builder members are cautiously optimistic that even if the economy slows the residential construction industry will still be in a strong position to take advantage of the lower interest rates.” The decrease in permitting as compared to 2018 is spread fairly evenly through the eight counties represented in the report. Johnson County has the largest decrease in year-to-date permit activity with a drop of 324 single family permits. The remaining three largest counties also show decreases year-to-date: Clay County is down 298, Jackson County has decreased by 258 and Platte County by 138. Once again, cities in Johnson County issued the most permits in September, accounting for 37 percent of total permits issued during the first three quarters of this year. The top five permitting cities for 2019 to date are Kansas City, Mo., (495); Olathe, Kan., (341); Lee’s Summit, Mo., (276); Overland Park, Kan., (253); and Lenexa, Kan., (185).
