KCHBA Celebrates Professional Women in Building Week NAHB designates Sept. 17-21 as Professional Women in Building Week. It’s an opportunity to celebrate women as a visible component of the residential construction industry and provides an occasion for members across the NAHB federation to collectively raise awareness of their contributions through activities that promote, enhance and support women within the industry. Shirley Wiseman, president and owner of the McVay Group in Kentucky, was the first female president of NAHB, serving from 1987-1991. Locally, we have many strong women leading companies and serving in leadership roles at the HBA and in the community. The HBA recognized these women during the Associate Appreciation lunch on Sept. 18. In attendance were: • Raelynn Barnhart – SAB Construction • Terri Marks – Providence Homes • Jo Ann Nero – Aristocrat Homes • Andrea Peterson – Monticello Homes • Chris Ragland – Homes By Chris • Lan Stallings – Dreams & Design Building Co • Brandy White – John Shilt Thank you to these women for breaking barriers and serving as role models for future generations in the industry.

Bipartisan Group of Senators Seek Fair Resolution of Lumber Trade Dispute In an effort spearheaded by NAHB, a dozen Republican and Democratic members of the U.S. Senate on Sept. 11 sent a joint letter to the Trump administration calling on the U.S. to resume softwood lumber trade negotiations with Canada. The 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement expired Oct. 12, 2015. As the Senate letter noted, “With no follow on agreement in place and new tariffs being imposed averaging just over 20%, lumber prices have skyrocketed, hitting an all-time high in June of this year.”

WE’VE ALSO BUILT SOMETHING FROM THE GROUND UP. OUR BUSINESS.

Therefore, senators are calling on the U.S. to negotiate with Canada in a renewed effort to reach a new softwood lumber agreement. At NAHB’s urging, 171 bipartisan members of the House sent a similar letter to the administration in June seeking a resumption of the lumber trade talks. The Senate letter to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer does not take sides in this trade dispute. It simply highlights the need to come to an equitable solution that will satisfy all sides.

“It is our hope that in negotiating a new agreement with Canada, you will take into account not only the impact of price fluctuations on the domestic lumber industry, but also on those secondary industries and consumers that rely on softwood lumber for their economic well-being,” the letter stated. “This will ensure the entire United States economy is taken into consideration.”

Members Gather for Associate Appreciation Month The National Association of Home Builders designates September as Associate Appreciation month. The HBA is fortunate to have associate members that are so active and involved in the association. As a gesture of its appreciation, the HBA hosted an associate appreciation lunch Sept. 18. A DJ played music while members gathered for hamburgers and hot dogs, which were catered by Nadler’s Catering. During the lunch, HBA President Gary Kerns recognized companies which have been members of the HBA since the early days of the association. These companies all became members in 1948: First Federal Bank, McCray Lumber and Millwork, Overhead Door Company of KC and Western Chandelier Company. The HBA recognized the members with the most Spike points. Those highlighted were George Schluter with 354 spike points, Tom Woods with 393 spike points, John Moffitt Jr. with 434 spike points and our top Spike in the association is Associate member Jack Baker with Bovard Insurance with 579 spike points.

Representatives of HBA’s long time members

The HBA used this lunch to recognize Professional Women in Building week. Several women builders attended the lunch including Raelynn Barnhart – SAB Construction, Terri Marks – Providence Homes, Jo Ann Nero – Aristocrat Homes, Andrea Peterson – Monticello Homes, Chris Ragland – Homes By Chris, Lan Stallings – Dreams & Design Building Co. and Brandy White – John Shilt Homes. This lunch is just a small way for the Board of Directors and the HBA staff to thank all of our associates for their membership. Remember — do business with a member! HBA’s top Spikes

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute! All contractors who need credit to renew their licenses are encouraged to attend classes at the Fall Seminar held by Johnson County Contractor Licensing October 29 through November 2. As the KCHBA does not have contractor classes scheduled for the remainder of 2018, builders and associates are urged to participate in Johnson County’s seminar. The mission of Johnson County Contractor Licensing is to foster the highest standards of integrity, skill, and trade practice in the construction disciplines regulated by the program. In so doing, they work to safeguard the life, health, property, and welfare of the public. That mission is accomplished by administering a uniform licensing program for participating jurisdictions and by producing quality construction-related continuing education seminars for licensed contractors, trade practitioners, and building inspection professionals. Representing 18 jurisdictions inside and outside Johnson County, the organization is proud to have been designated as the International Code Council’s first Preferred Provider Program. Pre-registration is required for classes and for lunch. For online registration go to http://cls.jocogov.org/CLSCOURSEREG/ default.aspx or call 913-715-2233.

Fall Parade Awards Celebrated at Arrowhead Winners of the Distinctive Plan & Design and Pick of the Parade contests were announced as HBA members gathered at Arrowhead for the Fall Parade of Homes Awards Celebration. Special thanks go to Megan Dillard of Fox4 News and Jenni Mann, Hunt Midwest, for announcing the winners and to Misty Hanson and Kimberly Abbs Riley, Stewart Title, for distributing the award trophies. The contest winners were announced in the September 30 Kansas City Star and are featured on the KCHBA website, kchba.org. The Fall Parade features two contests: Distinctive Plan & Design, which focuses on interior design and architecture, and Pick of the Parade, which ranks homes based on construction techniques, material selection, and craftsmanship. Housing professionals from outside the Kansas City area toured contest homes September 20 and 21. Criteria for Pick of the Parade contest include, among others: exterior flatwork and foundation, framing, window and door installation, cabinetry quality and installation, painting and floor covering. Judges in the Distinctive Plan & Design contest considered: curb appeal, layout and use of space, design and special features of the kitchen and bath, unique accent areas, lighting, furnishings and window treatments. The Home Builders Association appreciates continuing support for the Parade from Stewart Title, presenting sponsor. Plans are now underway for the Spring 2019 Parade, to be held April 27 through May 12.

HBA’s Young Professionals Help Build Tiny Homes The KCHBA Young Professionals committee is working with the Veterans Community Project to build tiny homes for veterans. Volunteers gather on Thursdays to help with this mission to eliminate Veteran homelessness by providing transitional-housing and enabling access to exceptional 360-degree service solutions. The Young Professionals group was established earlier this year and is chaired by Alex DeJong of Pella Products. With 24 members, the YP’s have hosted social gatherings and are partnering with the HBA PAC trustees to meet government officials. Anyone under the age of 45 is invited to join this energetic group – just call the HBA office for information on upcoming events.

Momentum Increases for the HBA Foundation Fund The newly-revived HBA Foundation Fund sponsored a 50/50 Raffle which culminated at the Fall Awards celebration. Thanks to the efforts of three energetic women—Christine Hawkins and Martha McBride-Rummel of Ferguson and Cara Christman with Kitchens & Baths by Briggs—the 50/50 raffle was doubled at Arrowhead before the contest winners were announced. The lucky winner split a pot of over $4000 with the Foundation Fund! Through the work of Tommy Bickimer, chair of the Fund committee, the HBA Fund has committed to sponsoring 4 scholarships at the Pittsburg State University School of Construction. Recipients will be chosen by School of Construction faculty and must meet certain academic criteria. HBA members are encouraged to consider the Foundation Fund when deciding on end-of-year charitable contributions. Please contact the HBA office for information on making a contribution.

The National Association of Home Builders Endorses Rep. Emanuel Cleaver for Congress The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) endorsed Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) for re-election to Congress.

“Rep. Cleaver knows that housing is critical to a strong and prosperous nation and has worked tirelessly to champion policies to keep housing a national priority and to advance the housing recovery,” said NAHB Chairman Randy Noel, a custom home builder from LaPlace, La. Housing is important to local, state and national economies and accounts for about 15 percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product. NAHB believes in this critical election year that it is important to elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to Congress in order to ensure that the housing and economic recovery continues to move forward. “We are proud to endorse Rep. Cleaver for re-election in November because he supports policies to remove needless regulatory barriers that will allow home builders to provide more safe and affordable housing for hard-working American families,” said Noel. New home construction is an engine of job creation. On average, workers from 22 fields are needed to build a home. Constructing 100 single-family homes creates nearly 300 full-time jobs and $11.1 million in fees and taxes for all levels of government to help fund schools, roads, police and firefighters.

Recruit New Members and Win a Napa Trip Sometimes, it takes more than those competitive juices to get Builder members fired up to recruit their business and trade partners to join their local association. Signature Kitchen Suite, the official membership sponsor of NAHB, understands that, and is offering a fabulous prize featuring juices of the fermented variety. Six lucky winners – and their six lucky spouses or friends – will snag a trip to Napa Valley, California: home to fine wine, delicious food, great golf and the Signature Kitchen Suite Experience and Design Center. But these recruiters need to get moving: The contest opened Sept. 1 and closes Oct. 31. That means there’s only a month to win over your bankers, finish carpenters, architects and of course, fellow builders and remodelers to be one of the six top finishers. The four-day, three-night trip can be claimed March 13-16, 2019 and includes airfare, meals, hotel and transportation for the winner and his or her guest as well as the Signature “brand immersion” experience featuring sous vide cooking demos and more. Get more details and read the fine print at nahb.org/sks. And then get recruiting: You have lots of competition!

Growth and Community Events Support Home Building A large crowd attended the final Missouri North Area Council meeting of 2018 on September 25 at Staley Farms Golf Club. After updates on the HBA’s charitable fund and the Young Professionals recent activities, Alicia Stephens of the Platte County EDC and Keli O’Neill, O’Neill Marketing, discussed two different aspects of community building. Stephens reviewed recent economic development activity in Platte County, which happens to be the fastest growing county in Missouri by percentage. Notable items include recently annexed land that is available for development in Weston and Parkville and a lengthy list of highway improvements in the area. The newly opened CVS distribution center has already hired 100 people and will provide 360 jobs when fully staffed. Likewise, the Riverside industrial park is filling space as quickly as it can be built. With infrastructure and employment in place, a community comes to life with events that bring people together. Keli O’Neill, CEO of O’Neill Marketing and board member of Visit KC, shared details of the many festivals that make the Kansas City area a great place to live. O’Neill has worked on projects such as Boulevardia, the Big 12 tournament, KC Riverfest, Irishfest, and the HBA’s Home Show. A city-wide event which began in August and runs through October 28 is Open Spaces. As the website www.openspaceskc.com describes it: “For nine weeks, in spaces both familiar and new, in parks and urban spaces, in galleries, performance halls and outdoor stages — Open Spaces will transform Kansas City into a living cultural tapestry into which the best of the world’s collective imagination can be woven.” Community is built from the roads we drive on, the places we work, the festivities we share and, always, the homes we live in. The September Missouri North Area Council provided concrete examples of each element.

21

Permit Activity Holds Steady in 2018 Residential permits issued in August increased both from July 2018 and from August of last year. The 513 single family units permitted during the month brings the year-to-date total to 4,107 which is within 2 percent of 2018’s first eight months, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report. Multifamily units (five or more units in one building) has surpassed the same period last year, with 2,345 units permitted in 2018 compared to 1,213 in 2017.

NATURAL GAS BRINGS YOU SAVINGS FOR YOUR FUTURE. Homeowners save with natural gas. Natural gas furnaces heat homes more efficiently than electric heat pumps: the average household can save $400 to $500 a year with a natural gas furnace.

The ten most active cities list remains the same as last year at this point, with the exception of 2 changes: Blue Springs and Independence have replaced Raymore and Shawnee. Additionally, the total permits issued by the 10 busiest cities has decreased from 2,698 to 2,603 – indicating new home construction is spread widely throughout the entire metro area. Comparing permit activity on a county-wide basis, the Missouri counties have decreased by an overall total of just 42 permits. However, Jackson county and Platte county have increased by 241 permits, offsetting the decrease of 283 in Clay and Cass counties. The Kansas counties of Johnson, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, and Miami have remained fairly constant with an increase of 19 permits compared to the same period in 2017.
