HGTV Star Monica Pedersen Featured at the HOME SHOW Monica Pedersen’s enthusiasm for her career as an interior decorator, lifestyle expert and television host is projected in all she does and she’ll be appearing at on the Home Show Stage, Saturday and Sunday, March 24 & 25. This self-taught designer and do-ityourself enthusiast grew up in a world of home repair and remodeling, where she absorbed her father’s handyman skills as well as her mother’s talents with a sewing machine. While traveling the world as a successful fashion model, Monica was quickly educated in highend design and textiles. Her passion for combining prints, pattern, and texture is present throughout her work. She openly

admits to being a textile junkie, and says she is happiest when parked in front of her sewing machine looking at twenty yards of gorgeous fabric. As a Designer on HGTV’s hit television series, Designed to Sell, Pedersen quickly became a trusted expert showing viewers how to add value to their homes while working within a tight budget. She encourages homeowners to creatively embrace their budgets. “Your budget will be your best friend when it comes to making design decisions. Home Show Features Made in America House Sparked by the ABC World News report featuring a Made in America house whose content included U S A - m a d e components, the HBA wants to feature the same in this year’s Home Show, March 23-25 at Bartle Hall. A stellar team is charging ahead on this state-ofthe art concept and they look forward to displaying the creative capabilities of the builders and designers while making a patriotic statement that also boosts the economy. The original story was about a Bozeman, Montana builder, Anders Lewendal who is hard at work building a home he hopes will be a blueprint for creating jobs in America. Lewendal, an economist turned builder, is constructing a house made entirely from U.S.-made products. Everything from the nails, screws and bolts, to the steel, www.kchba.org

staples and bathtub is made in the United States. Lewendal is convinced that if every builder bought just 5 percent more U.S.-made materials, they would create 220,000 jobs. The Boston Consulting Group agrees, confirming that the numbers add up. In all, the Lewendal’s U.S.-made house is being built with more than 120 products from more than 33 states. Even though certain goods are more expensive, in total, the cost of the house is nearly identical, given that other U.S.-made products are cheaper so the all-American home, is running only 1 to 2 percent more than a foreign-sourced house. Kansas City Makes NAHB Improving Markets List List Expands to Nearly 100 The list of housing markets showing measurable improvement expanded by 29 metros in February to include a total of 98 entries on the National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index (IMI), released in February. Thirty-six states are now represented by at least one market on the list. The index identifies metropolitan areas that have shown improvement from their respective troughs in housing permits, employment and house prices for at least six consecutive months. The February index adds some metropolitan areas that have been particularly weak; this is due to the fact that the IMI measures improvement from the bottom, and some of the hardest hit markets are showing signs of coming off of the extreme lows. Keeping this in mind, notable new entrants to list in February include Miami, Fla; Boston; Detroit; Kansas City, Mo.; Portland, Ore.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Salt Lake City. “The number of improving housing markets has risen for six consecutive months, and 36 states now have at least one metropolitan area on the list,” noted NAHB Chairman Bob Nielsen, a home builder from Reno, Nev. “This indicates that despite the many challenges that continue to drag on a housing recovery – including the tight lending environment for builders and buyers – improving conditions are slowly but surely spreading from one housing market to the next.” “While many of the markets on the February IMI are far from fully recovered, the index points out where employment, home prices and housing production are

no longer retreating and have held above their lowest recession troughs for six months or more,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “This is a sign that a large cross section of the country is starting to turn the corner as local economic conditions stabilize.” The IMI is designed to track housing markets throughout the country that are showing signs of improving economic health. The index measures three sets of independent monthly data to get a mark on the top improving Metropolitan Statistical Areas. The three indicators that are analyzed are employment growth from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, house price appreciation from Freddie Mac, and single-family housing permit growth from the U.S. Census Bureau. NAHB uses the latest available data from these sources to generate a list of improving markets. A metropolitan area must see improvement in all three areas for at least six months following their respective troughs before being included on the improving markets list. Seven markets dropped from the NAHB/First American Improving Markets Index in February as they experienced softening house prices. These metros include San Jose, Calif.; Washington, D.C.; Kankakee, Ill.; New Orleans; Worcester, Mass.; Jackson, Miss.; and Sherman, Tex. A complete list of all 98 metropolitan areas currently on the IMI, and a separate breakout of metros newly added to the list in February, is available at: www. nahb.org.

Build Green KC Kansas Area Council Lunch: Solar – the Alternative Energy

Thanks to decreased prices of up to 40 percent, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems just recently became affordable, according to Susan Brown with Brightergy who discussed the latest trends in solar energy at the Kansas Area Council Lunch in February. Brown explained the current financials and incentives, and investments businesses and homeowners can make. The fall in prices for PV components is due to economies of scale and fierce competition from China have made solar

nearly as cheap as conventional sources in the US electricity grid. “Solar prices are dropping faster than anyone thought they could,” said Brown. She explained how federal, state and local authorities offer incentives that can reduce the upfront cost by over 66 percent. The federal government provided a 30% income tax credit for solar property and there is no limit on the tax credit carried forward up to 20 years. Missouri offers a rebate program, however, Kansas does not.

It’s commonly known that solar systems create clean energy from the sun so going solar helps combat climate change and reduce dependence on polluting fossil fuels. More than 95 percent of energy used in the US is sourced from dirty fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. A typical 25 ks solar PV system has significant environmental benefits by offering the equivalent of planting 3,000 trees, removing 900 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, and the absence of approximately 1.2 million miles in a car.

Not So Big Architect and Innovator Sara Susanka Featured at Home Show Sarah Susanka’s “Not So Big” message has become a launch pad for a new dimension of understanding not just about how we inhabit our homes, but also about how we inhabit our planet and even our day-to-day lives. Susanka will be a featured speaker at the Home Show on the HBA Stage, March 23. As a cultural visionary with an incredible ability to understand the underlying structure of the American lifestyle, Susanka is providing the language and tools that are redefining how we live. Thought leader, inspirational keynote speaker and acclaimed architect, Susanka is the acclaimed author of nine best-selling books including The Not So Big House (Taunton, 1998), The Not So Big Life (Random House, 2007), Not So Big Remodeling (Taunton, 2009), and most recently, More Not So Big Solutions for Your Home (Taunton, 2010). Her books have sold well over 1.2 million copies. Susanka is personally putting Not So Big house design principles into action with her Not So Big Showhouse at SchoolStreet in Libertyville, Illinois. The Showhouse

and SchoolStreet development powerfully combine Not So Big house design and a walkable community, showing how “better, not bigger” design, a well-thought out neighborhood, and a vibrant existing community create housing success. Through her Not So Big House presentations and book series, Susanka has helped readers understand that the sense of “home” they’re seeking has almost nothing to do with quantity and everything to do with quality. She points out that we feel “at home” in our houses when where we live reflects who we are in our hearts. In her book and presentations about The Not So Big Life, she

uses this same set of notions to explain that we can feel “at home” in our lives only when what we do reflects who we truly are. Susanka unveils a process for changing the way we live by fully inhabiting each moment of our lives, and by showing up completely in whatever it is we are doing. Builder Magazine distinguishes Susanka as one of the 30 most notable innovators in the housing industry over the past 30 years. Fast Company named her to their debut list of “Fast 50” innovators whose achievements have helped to change society, Newsweek magazine selected her as a “top newsmaker” for 2000, and U.S. News and World Report dubbed her an “innovator in American culture” in 1998. Susanka was presented with the 2007 Anne Morrow Lindbergh Award by the Lindbergh Foundation for outstanding individual achievement in making positive contributions to our world.
