Build Opportunity at the NAHB International Builders Show
The International Builders’ Show (IBS) is the largest annual light construction show in the world and takes place January 22-24 in Las Vegas. The exhibit floor presents miles of the latest and most advanced building products and services ever assembled. New Building Codes Expected to Take Effect in the New Year Following the passage of new building codes in Kansas City, Missouri, Overland Park and Olathe, building code officials from several cities and counties across the Kansas City metro area are close to finalizing their building code proposals to present to their respective city councils for approval before the end of the year. As of November 14, 2012, the HBA expects several new codes to take effect on either January 1 or April 1, 2013 (see chart on page 7). Last month the HBA hosted building code officials from six different jurisdictions to talk about the status of their building code proposals and to provide an opportunity for members to

weigh-in on the changes. In this meeting, a common approach emerged on how to handle compliance with the energy code. Some cities, such as Shawnee and Olathe, are providing builders with two options for compliance. The “prescriptive option” would require that builders follow the code requirements by the book. The alternative option or “HERS option” would require builders to enlist an independent energy auditor to provide a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index Score on all new homes to meet the energy efficiency requirements in the code. Inaugural Welcomes Incoming President & Announces Awards Join with the HBA for the Inaugural Dinner 2012 to welcome the 68th President of the Board of Directors and for the annual awards presentation. Incoming President Fred Delibero, Summit Custom Homes, will receive the gavel and award winners will be announced for the Builders Hall of Fame, the Fred J. Geier Associate of the Year, and the Bob Bollier Award for Sales and Marketing.
