Designer Bobby Berk Coming to KC Home & Lifestyle Show March 15
T
he Greater Kansas City Home & Lifestyle Show, produced by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City, is excited to announce that Bobby Berk will headline the 2020 show on Sunday, March 15. Berk most recently has taken center stage as a member of the “Fab 5” in Netflix’s hugely popular remake, Queer Eye. Berk has also appeared as a design expert on numerous TV networks including HGTV, Bravo, NBC and CBS. Fans won’t want to miss Berk on stage at 11:30 a.m. as he offers design advice and reunites with Queer Eye heroes from the last season taped in Kansas City. KCHBA Celebrates Incoming President, 2019 Achievements Members gathered for the 2019 Inaugural dinner presentation at Boulevard Brewing Co. on Dec. 11 to honor incoming 2020 president, Jerry Braklow of Braklow Custom Homes. Jerry spoke on his goals as president, which include placing emphasis on the value of the HBA and providing effective leadership regarding the HBA’s position on government affairs and issues affecting the home-building industry. Also during the celebration, four awards were given to KCHBA members for their outstanding leadership and service to the industry and the organization. The Bob Bollier Sales & Marketing award was presented to Matt Adam of Matt Adam Development. Bill Arnold, CKF, was named the Fred J. Geier Associate of the Year. The Next Generation Builder award was presented to Greg Prieb Jr. of Prieb Homes and the 2019 inductee into the Builder Hall of Fame is Shawn Woods of Ashlar Homes. The KCHBA is honored to welcome Jerry as its president for 2020 and looks forward to all that will be accomplished.

Foundation Donates $15,000 to Local Organizations in Q4
T
he Homebuilders Foundation Fund of Greater Kansas City has recently donated to several organizations to advance the missions of each and facilitate in reaching different goals. These organizations include Make a Wish Foundation, Johnson County Community College, Washington Elementary School, and Builder Development Corp. The Foundation donated $2,500 to the Make a Wish Foundation to help grant wishes of children with critical illnesses. Johnson County Community College received a donation of $3,000 from the Foundation to help encourage and fund resources for students interested in residential construction. After the KCHBA was informed that Washington Elementary in Olathe was raising money for new playground equipment, our members stepped up to help. Tommy Bickimer, Bickimer Homes, presented the Washington Elementary School with a check for $1,500 on behalf of the Foundation to help cover the expenses of the new playground. The Homebuilders Foundation Fund of Greater Kansas City is honored to provide resources and help fund the missions of organizations such as these.

Tips for Ensuring the Successful Continuation of Your Business
T
here’s more to a succession plan than having a will or trust on paper, according to Terry Resnick and Lee Resnick of Resnick Associates. “Ninety percent of businesses in the United States are private, family owned businesses and two out of three won’t survive past the first generation,” said Lee Resnick at a succession planning seminar at the HBA last month. “It’s a business decision,” said Lee Resnick. “If a child is not active in the business, they shouldn’t necessarily get stock and dividends. There are other ways to provide for that child without them getting involved in the business.” There is a five-point checklist when creating a succession plan, according to Terry Resnick: • Define personal goals and identify your successor.
Oftentimes, a business owner’s second largest asset after the business itself is his or her life insurance, according to Terry Resnick. But there are different types and a common mistake business owners make is improperly arranged life insurance.
• Identify techniques to reduce or eliminate estate taxes. • Ensure liquidity positioning to avoid forced sale. • Include business interest transfer techniques to help achieve succession goals.

MCC Students Building Smart Home in Class

he KCHBA has partnered with Metropolitan Community College to give students hands-on construction experience. Between now and the Home & Lifestyle Show in March, MCC students will build and break down the smart home used in the 2019 Home Show to learn what it takes to build a home. The week before the Home Show begins, the students will re-build the smart home in Bartle Hall. This is valuable experience for students interested in the skilled trades and is an opportunity for the KCHBA to promote careers in the construction industry. Last Chance Code Credit Classes Popular
A
few weeks ago, builders had one last chance to earn code credit before year-end. More than 30 builders earned code credit Dec. 12-13 as the KCHBA hosted 16 hours of classes at its office. On Dec. 12, builders learned about soils, footings and foundation, including basic standards and the IRC requirements for the construction with masonry and concrete.
On Dec. 13, attendees discussed communications, problem solving options and ethical standards as part of a class about the
contractor and building inspector partnership. In the afternoon, students learned about the International Residential Code from 2012-2018. Classes were taught by Russell Thornburg, a former program manager at Johnson County Contractor Licensing (JCCL) who now teaches classes across the country. All credit was approved through JCCL.

The HBA Foundation, the charitable arm of the HBA, is now accepting grant requests from non-profit organizations who share our commitment to our neighbors. The Foundation is dedicated to advancing charitable, educational and community causes such as housing-related issues, rebuilding declining neighborhoods, restoration of existing structures, building industry workforce, housing disaster relief and community redevelopment. Single-Family Permits Rebound in October

he number of single-family housing permits issued in October in the Kansas City metro increased from the prior month and showed more activity than October 2018, according to the monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. The organization reported a total of 492 single-family homes permitted in October 2019, resulting in a 20 percent increase compared to the 396 permitted in September 2019. October’s 492 single-family permits is also a slight increase from October 2018 when 485 permits were issued. Year to date, however, single-family permits are still down 23 percent compared to this time last year. “Similar to the Kansas City region, national permit numbers also increased in October,” said KCHBA Executive Vice President Will Ruder. “This is likely attributable to a number of factors including a prolonged low-interest rate environment and the consumer demand associated with it.” The top five permitting cities in October 2019 were Kansas City, Mo., (71); Olathe, Kan., (66); Blue Springs, Mo., (38); Overland Park, Kan., (31); and Lee’s Summit, Mo., (29).
