This year’s Fall Parade of Homes returns to the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, September 28 thru October 13 and marks the 66th consecutive year of being proudly presented by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. Voters in Overland Park will Consider 1/8-Cent Sales Tax Extension to Fund Infrastructure On September 17, 2013, the City of Overland Park (OP) will distribute mail ballots that ask citizens to vote for a 10-year extension of a 1/8-cent Special Purpose City Retailers’ Sales Tax to fund infrastructure, including residential and thoroughfare improvements and the replacement of sidewalks, curbs, street lights and traffic signals. The 1/8-cent sales tax increase was first approved in 1998 and extended in 2003 and 2008 with overwhelming support but is now scheduled to expire on March 31, 2014. The 10-year extension would extend the sales tax through March 31, 2024 and is expected to raise about $65 million. The City of OP has created a webpage with information on how the money from
the sales tax increase has been invested to date. (See: www.opkansas.org/citygovernment/sales-and-property-taxes/18-cent-sales-tax/) According to the City, between 1999 and 2009, 28 miles of residential neighborhood streets were improved using the funds and another seven miles will be improved through 2013. The City also provides a project map that outlines future projects should the tax be renewed. Registered voters in the City of OP will have until October 8, 2013 at noon to return their ballots to the Johnson County Election Office. The last day to register to vote is September 17, 2013. In cities across the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, housing production continues to climb in 2013 with the second highest month this year, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report. July permits increased to 410 single family permits over 333 the previous month. Year to date total permits are the highest in five years with 2,356 permits compared to 2012 which were 1,767. All eight area counties show an increase over 2012 year to date with an average increase of 33 percent. Johnson County has the highest number of permits this year with 968 which is an increase of 281 over last year. Jackson County has the second highest number with 452 permits followed by Clay County with 377 then Platte County with 217 and Cass County follows with 119. Kansas City remains the highest permitting city with 386 permits in Clay, Platte and Jackson combined counties.
