All-Around Clay Shoot to Bring Fall Fun for HBA The HBA annual clay shoot is scheduled for Friday, October 12th at Powder Creek Shooting Park in Lenexa. This year’s event will include the 50 round (twelve station) sporting clay shoot, a 25 round skeet shoot, and 25 round trap shoot. Five person teams are $550 and individuals are $125. Event registration will start at 8:30 a.m. and shooters will start upon

check-in and all shooters must be registered by 9:30 a.m. Be a Shooting Station sponsor for only $200 or donate prizes and giveaways. The Fall Parade of Homes returns to the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, September 29-October 14 and will showcase 242 new homes that will be free and open to the public 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Homes are located in eight counties with 117 in Kansas, 50 in the Missouri north area, and 75 in the Missouri south area from 79 home builders. Planning a Parade experience is made even easier thanks to the wealth of resources available through the Fall Parade site, www.kcparadeofhomes.com. Once there, visitors can browse homes by price, location, builder, floor plan, subdivision and more as well as visit builder websites. “The HBA Fall Parade of Homes is the second largest in the United States due to extremely high builder participation,” stated Sara Corless, executive director of the HBA of Kansas City. “Owning your own home is not just an investment in your portfolio, it’s a place that derives happiness on a daily basis. We are thrilled to see that single family home building is on the upswing and home buyers are reconnecting with the American dream that owning your own home is still something worth cherishing.”

Register for Estimating and Design Classes in November

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist Education Offered in October

NAHB’s Estimating for Builders and Remodelers and Design/Build classes will be offered November 8 & 9 at the HBA. These classes qualify for continuing education for the CAPS and GCP’s designations. They also can be applied toward the CGB, GGR, & CGA. Cost is $235 per class. Register at www.kchba.org or contact Andrew McKeegan, andrew@kchba.org.

Identifying these opportunities and developing the skills to interact with 50+ customers can help you grow your business dramatically. The HBA through the NAHB will offer Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist certification education (CAPS), Wednesday, October 24-Friday October 26, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the HBA. Three classes are required including Business Management for the Building Professional, CAPS I and CAPS II. These courses provide a solid foundation for best business practices for smaller businesses, marketing to the aging population and how to create homes for life. Building Code Officials in Johnson County Finalizing Amendments to International Construction Codes Building code officials from several jurisdictions in Johnson County are working to develop final recommendations on amendments to the 2012 International construction codes to submit for consideration to their respective governing bodies. On September 4, 2012, Shawnee Codes Official, Steve Thompson, was the first to present an update on the joint code review process to the City of Shawnee’s council

committee. Thompson stated that the various fire and code officials would meet again to finalize consensus on all remaining issues before the end of the year. He also affirmed that proposed amendments to the energy code are still under study. HBA members were in Shawnee to share the HBA’s position on amendments to the codes, provide some cost data analysis related to the energy code amendments, and urge building code

Strong Summer Ends with a Dip for Single Family Permits

Overall there was a dip in permits, but don’t tell Platte County or Johnson County where some cities have enjoyed growth of more than 145 percent on average over the same period last year, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report. Platte County year to date has a total of 216 single family permits with nearly all coming from Kansas City, Parkville and in the county. Johnson County year to date has a total of 802 single family permits with the biggest jumps seen in Leawood and Shawnee as a percentage of the overall permits issued. Multi-family numbers continue to grow rapidly, too, coming in at nearly twice the number compared to 2011 year to date and five times that of 2010. In August, 457 multi-family permits were issued in apartment projects in Lenexa and Kansas City, Missouri (Platte County). “Credit continues to ease slightly for builders and mortgage rates that were already at record lows continue to bring buyers into the market and allow homeowners to refinance which continues to help the Kansas City Market improve,” said Executive Vice President Sara Corless. “After more than five years of weakness in the Kansas City economy this improvement is bringing more builders and developers back into the market and creating exciting new product for a new generation of buyers.”
