Imagine physically turning toward something, as a result you might notice you are simultaneously turning away from something else.

This philosophy was introduced to me a few weeks ago and has been stuck in my head ever since. With this viewpoint, I find things changing in my life. One experience I can share is having the feeling of loneliness. Yes, you might find it hard to believe that a man having a family of ten can feel alone. Well one day as I am driving across town to pick up my 11-year-old from dance, I made a decision to turn off the radio and call a family member who I have not visited with much. I found in turning myself toward a friendly conversation that I was turning away from loneliness.

This conversation with my family member was nothing but a chance to catch up, however it lifted a feeling of guilt I had placed on myself. I found that opening up a little and reaching out to someone else was something God had in mind when he created us.

“We are made to be in relationships – to bless and to be blessed by the care and companionship offered by others. God wants us to be in friendships that bring joy into our lives, that bring us closer to him, and that make us better people.”

So then again, I found myself traveling across town to pick up from dance and this time I decided to reach out to an old high school friend whom I haven’t spoke with for over a year. It was nice to catch up and as it turns out we decided to go running together to try and hold on to our youth for a little longer. :) As I write this letter, I hope to inspire you to think about turning toward something that will have a positive effect in your life by turning your back on something bringing you down.

Whatever you may be struggling with, I pray that God gives you strength and courage.

Dr. Joel to Speak at Tribute to Youth Dr. Steve Joel will be the guest speaker at our annual Tribute to Youth event on Monday, April 10. This annual event honors scholarship recipients as well as the winners of our Interior and Residential Design Contest and the “If I Could Build a House” Art Contest. The future of building is in the hands of these young people who are showing an interest in interior or residential design or simply drawing the home of their dreams. We hope you join us on April 10 as we pay tribute to youth!

In 2010, Dr. Steve Joel joined Lincoln Public Schools as superintendent. Previously, he served for ten years as superintendent in Grand Island and eight years in Beatrice. A native of Long Island, New York, he has degrees from Doane College, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Kansas State University.

Dr. Joel has been honored with a wide variety of awards and distinctions including: Nebraska Superintendent of the Year and Leadership Excellence by the Educational Resource Development Institute. He also has been active in many community clubs and coalitions, and serves on a number of boards including “Our annual Tribute to Youth event will be the Chamber of Commerce, held on Monday, April 10. We Schools, Lincoln Community will also be honoring our local youth who won Foundation, The Career Academy and President of the United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County Board. this year’s Residential and Interior Design In his time as superintendent at various school districts, Dr. Joel has focused on comprehensive solutions to significant school and community issues. The immigration raid in Grand Island led to the formation of a community coalition to begin the arduous process of rebuilding community unity, and the tragic fire that resulted in a complete loss of the Lincoln Public Schools District Office allowed for the construction of a new facility. More recently, Lincoln has grown rapidly to include almost 41,000 students and 8,000 staff members. With Dr. Joel’s leadership, Lincoln Public Schools has adopted a comprehensive instructional technology plan and developed The Career Academy leading Nebraska into the next phase of K12 education.

Spring Parade of Homes

Important Notice for the Builders in the Spring Parade of Homes The following are guidelines which the Building & Safety Department requires in order to have a house open in the Parade of Homes.

These items are required. Please observe. Your Parade contract requires that your home have final inspection.

City of Lincoln Building & Safety Department Parade of Homes Code Items to be completed Prior to being Open to the Public A show home in the Parade of Homes needs to meet basic safety criteria due to the large volume of public that passes through each home.

Final inspections for all sections (plumbing, mechanical, electrical, building) must be scheduled AND completed before a house can be open to the public as a show home. As as reminder, each contractor or subcontractor must schedule their respective inspections separately for each permit. A building inspection can occur only after plumbing, mechanical and electrical finals have taken place. When all final inspections have taken place, the building inspector may issue a Certificate of Occupancy or a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy.

Temporary Occupancy permission may be granted by the building inspector based on the following guidelines:

These guidelines are not considered to be all inclusive but meant to assist the permit applicant in obtaining permission to have a show home open to the public.

In 2001, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln was asked by an employee of the Building & Safety Department to help build a ramp for a fellow city employee. Because the need was temporary, it was decided the best approach was to purchase a light-weight modular aluminum ramp which could be assembled on site and, once the ramp was no longer needed, it could be removed and stored for future use. Since then, the ramp has been used numerous times by those in need and Remodelers Council members are quick to volunteer the man hours required to make it happen.

Members of the Remodelers Council installed the modular ramp system for a Lincoln couple in 2013 however the ramp is no longer needed. We are now looking for a volunteer to store the ramp until it is needed again. If you are interested in helping with this project or if you know of someone in need, please contact Jennie Korth or Michaela Harrison at 402-423-4225.

Soil Issues for Residential Construction Doyle Petersen is a soils engineer who has worked in the Lincoln office of Alfred Benesch & Company (formerly HWS Consulting Group, Inc.) his entire career. Doyle has over 38 years of design and construction soils experience relating to foundations, embankments, pavements, airports, railroads and highways. Doyle will be discussing and answering questions on various soils-related topics regarding residential construction including: swelling/heaving soils; compressible soils; foundation/under oor drainage systems; effects of trees and vegetation on foundation/sub grade soils; proper placement of fill/backfill; mud jacking; slab curl; possible drying of soils because of under floor radon systems; under floor vapor barriers; helical anchors; and push piers.

Stay at 17 Inches In Nashville, Tennessee, during the first week of January, 1996, more than 4,000 baseball coaches descended upon the Opryland Hotel for the 52nd annual ABCA convention. Nineteen times since, many of the same professional, college, high school, youth, and a slew of international coaches from passionate and developing baseball nations have gathered at various convention hotels across the country for two-and-half days of clinic presentations and industry exhibits.

Sure, many members of the American Baseball Coaches Association have come and gone in those years; the leadership has been passed, nepotistically, from Dave Keilitz to his son, Craig; and the association — and baseball, in general — has lost some of its greatest coaches, including Rod Dedeaux, Gordie Gillespie, and Chuck “Bobo” Brayton.

I have attended all but three conventions in those nineteen years, and I have enjoyed and benefited from each of them. But ’96 was special — not just because it was held in the home of country music, a town I’d always wanted to visit. And not because I was attending my very first convention.

Nashville in ’96 was special because it was there and then that I learned that baseball — the thing that had brought 4,000 of us together — was merely a metaphor for my own life and those of the players I hoped to impact.

While I waited in line to register with the hotel staff, I heard other more veteran coaches rumbling about the lineup of speakers scheduled to present during the weekend. One name, in particular, kept resurfacing, always with the same sentiment — “John Scolinos is here? Oh man, worth every penny of my airfare.”

In 1996, Coach Scolinos was 78 years old and five years retired from a college coaching career that began in 1948. He shuffled to the stage to an impressive standing ovation, wearing dark polyester pants, a light blue shirt, and a string around his neck from which home plate hung — a fullsized, stark-white home plate.

Seriously, I wondered, who in the hell is this guy?

After speaking for twenty-five minutes, not once mentioning the prop hanging around his neck, Coach Scolinos appeared to notice the snickering among some of the coaches. Even those who knew Coach Scolinos had to wonder exactly where he was going with this, or if he had simply forgotten about home plate since he’d gotten on stage.

Then, finally …

“You’re probably all wondering why I’m wearing home plate around my neck. Or maybe you think I escaped from Camarillo State Hospital,” he said, his voice growing irascible. I laughed along with the others, acknowledging the possibility. “No,” he continued, “I may be old, but I’m not crazy. The reason I stand before you today is to share with you baseball people what I’ve learned in my life, what I’ve learned about home plate in my 78 years.”

Several hands went up when Scolinos asked how many Little League coaches were in the room. “Do you know how wide home plate is in Little League?” After a pause, someone offered, “Seventeen inches,” more question than answer.

Who the hell is John Scolinos, I wondered. No matter, I was just happy to be there.

“That’s right,” he said. “How about in Babe Ruth? Any Babe Ruth coaches in the house?”

Having sensed the size of the group during check-in, I woke early the next morning in order to ensure myself a good seat near the stage — first chair on the right side of the center isle, third row back — where I sat, alone, for an hour until the audio-visual techs arrived to fine-tune their equipment. The proverbial bee bee in a boxcar, I was surrounded by empty chairs in a room as large as a football field. Eventually, I was joined by other, slightly less eager, coaches until the room was filled to capacity. By the time Augie Garrido was introduced to deliver the traditional first presentation from the previous season’s College World Series winner, there wasn’t an empty chair in the room.

Another long pause.

ABCA conventions have a certain party-like quality to them. They provide a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with old friends from a fraternal game that often spreads its coaches all over the country. As such, it is common for coaches to bail out of afternoon clinic sessions in favor of old friends and the bar. As a result, I discovered, the crowd is comparatively sparse after lunch, and I had no trouble getting my seat back, even after grabbing a plasticwrapped sandwich off the shelf at the Opryland gift shop.

I woke early the next morning and once again found myself alone in the massive convention hall, reviewing my notes from the day before: pitching mechanics, hitting philosophy, team practice drills. All technical and typical — important stuff for a young coach, and I was in Heaven. At the end of the morning session, certain that I had accurately scouted the group dynamic and that my seat would again be waiting for me after lunch, I allowed myself a few extra minutes to sit down and enjoy an overpriced sandwich in one of the hotel restaurants. But when I returned to the convention hall thirty minutes before the lunch break ended, not only was my seat not available, barely any seats were available! I managed to find one between two high school coaches, both proudly adorned in their respective team caps and jackets. Disappointed in myself for losing my seat up front, I wondered what had pried all these coaches from their barstools. I found the clinic schedule in my bag: “1 PM John Scolinos, Cal Poly Pomona.” It was the man whose name I had heard buzzing around the lobby two days earlier. Could he be the reason that all 4,000 coaches had returned, early, to the convention hall?

Wow, I thought, this guy must really be good.

I had no idea.

“Seventeen inches?”came a guess from another reluctant coach.

“That’s right,” said Scolinos. “Now, how many high school coaches do we have in the room?” Hundreds of hands shot up, as the pattern began to appear. “How wide is home plate in high school baseball?”

“Seventeen inches,” they said, sounding more confident.

“You’re right!” Scolinos barked. “And you college coaches, how wide is home plate in college?”

“Seventeen inches!” we said, in unison.

“Any Minor League coaches here? How wide is home plate in pro ball?”

“Seventeen inches!”

“RIGHT! And in the Major Leagues, how wide home plate is in the Major Leagues?”

“Seventeen inches!”

“SEV-EN-TEEN INCHES!” he confirmed, his voice bellowing off the walls. “And what do they do with a a Big League pitcher who can’t throw the ball over seventeen inches?” Pause. “They send him to Pocatello!” he hollered, drawing raucous laughter.

“What they don’t do is this: they don’t say, ‘Ah, that’s okay, Jimmy. You can’t hit a seventeen-inch target? We’ll make it eighteen inches, or nineteen inches. We’ll make it twenty inches so you have a better chance of hitting it. If you can’t hit that, let us know so we can make it wider still, say twenty-five inches.’”

Pause.

“Coaches …”

Pause. ” … what do we do when our best player shows up late to practice? When our team rules forbid facial hair and a guy shows up unshaven? What if he gets caught drinking? Do we hold him accountable? Or do we change the

The chuckles gradually faded as four thousand coaches grew quiet, the fog lifting as the old coach’s message began to unfold. He turned the plate toward himself and, using a Sharpie, began to draw something. When he turned it toward the crowd, point up, a house was revealed, complete with a freshly drawn door and two windows. “This is the problem in our homes today. With our marriages, with the way we parent our kids. With our discipline. We don’t teach accountability to our kids, and there is no consequence for failing to meet standards. We widen the plate!”

“This is the problem in our schools today. The quality of our education is going downhill fast and teachers have been stripped of the tools they need to be successful, and to educate and discipline our young people. We are allowing others to widen home plate! Where is that getting us?”

“And this is the problem in the Church, where powerful people in positions of authority have taken advantage of young children, only to have such an atrocity swept under the rug for years. Our church leaders are widening home plate!”

I was amazed. At a baseball convention where I expected to learn something about curveballs and bunting and how to run better practices, I had learned something far more valuable. From an old man with home plate strung around his neck, I had learned something about life, about myself, about my own weaknesses and about my responsibilities as a leader. I had to hold myself and others accountable to that which I knew to be right, lest our families, our faith, and our society continue down an undesirable path.

“If I am lucky,” Coach Scolinos concluded, “you will remember one thing from this old coach today. It is this: if we fail to hold ourselves to a higher standard, a standard of what we know to be right; if we fail to hold our spouses and our children to the same standards, if we are unwilling or unable to provide a consequence when they do not meet the standard; and if our schools and churches and our government fail to hold themselves accountable to those they serve, there is but one thing to look forward to …”

With that, he held home plate in front of his chest, turned it around, and revealed its dark black backside. “… dark days ahead.”

Coach Scolinos died in 2009 at the age of 91, but not before touching the lives of hundreds of players and coaches, including mine. Meeting him at my first ABCA convention kept me returning year after year, looking for similar wisdom and inspiration from other coaches. He is the best clinic speaker the ABCA has ever known because he was so much more than a baseball coach.

His message was clear: “Coaches, keep your players — no matter how good they are — your own children, and most of all, keep yourself at seventeen inches.”

Spring is here and we are very excited for the months to come!

Our focus this year has been about enriching our members lives through education, comradery and most recently, we have been focused on remembering the importance of giving back. We are in the final stages of planning a 5K run at Holmes Lake Tyler Reynolds YBP President on June 24 with proceeds going to the Lighthouse. Their mission is to promote the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of adolescents. The kids who pass through the Lighthouse are our next generation of leaders with many of them undoubtedly becoming future young professionals within our industry so we feel that it is imperative to help them succeed. You can learn more about this fantastic organization at www.lincolnlighthouse.org.

We will also have a presence at the Hog Roast this August with our bean bag tournament which will again raise money for our community and will involve other future young professionals in the project. The students of the Building Construction Technology program at SCC will be building the boards for this tournament. I look forward to seeing you all at both of these events as we cheer on our fellow HBAL members and raise money for great local causes at the same time.

It’s important to understand what you can do to observe window safety, especially when young children are in the home.

Why is Window Safety Week Important?

Window Safety Week in April coincides with the arrival of spring, when homeowners naturally want to open the windows and let in fresh air.

Its goal is twofold: For families to understand the role of windows in escaping a fire or other emergency and to learn to safeguard against accidental window falls.

The Window Safety Task Force of the National Safety Council proudly observes Window Safety Week each year during the first full week of April.

Print our window safety brochure, checklist and kids’ activity book, and share them with everyone in your household so they are aware of their role in window safety. Our hope is that these lessons will last a lifetime.

A Window Could be Your Lifeline in an Emergency Windows have saved many lives when used as emergency escape routes.

Larger, egress windows can take on an even greater role by preventing families from being trapped in a basement and by more easily allowing rescue crews to enter the home.

How prepared are you to escape a fire? You will likely have little time to think, which is why it is essential to develop and test an escape plan at least twice a year with everyone in the home.

As part of your home escape plan: • Make sure windows are not nailed or painted shut • Do not install air conditioners in windows that may be needed for escape • Make sure at least one window in each bedroom meets escape and rescue requirements • Window guards, security bars, grilles or grates render windows useless in an emergency unless they have a release mechanism; update them if necessary • Develop an emergency escape plan and practice it during the day and at night • Keep emergency escape ladders in second- or third-story bedrooms and teach everyone in the home how to use them Window Falls are Preventable According to SafeKids.org: • Children are twice as likely to sustain a fall-related injury at home than at a childcare facility • Window falls occur more frequently in urban areas • Window falls account for about eight deaths and 3,300 injuries among children 5 and younger each year “It only takes seconds for a preventable window fall to occur,” said Amy Artuso, program manager at NSC. “To avoid these needless tragedies, it is very important for parents and caregivers to take steps to prevent home falls.”

Take a few minutes now to consider what you can do to help keep your loved ones safe around windows, and commit these rules to memory: • Remember that insect screens cannot support a child’s weight • Never leave children unattended around open windows, with or without a screen • Windows within a child’s reach should remain closed • Don’t place furniture under windows; children can climb and potentially fall from an open window • Keep children’s play areas away from windows, balconies or patio doors While April 3-9 is officially Window Safety Week this year, we encourage you to practice window safety year-round. Lives depend on it.

What is the Window Safety Task Force?

Formed in 1997, the Window Safety Task Force works year-round in conjunction with NSC, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Safe Kids Worldwide, the International Code Council and other safety advocates to promote window safety awareness. Members include representatives from the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, the Window and Door Manufacturers Association, the Screen Manufacturers Association and other organizations.
