April

Every year, HBAL honors the young people who have excelled in programs we sponsor, such as our Interior Design and CAD Residential Design Contest. We also award scholarships to high school seniors who are continuing their education in a construction-related field. HBAL takes very seriously its dedication to youth and to housing and we feel we have some outstanding programs which foster an interest in and love for homebuilding.

The Power of Leadership and Growth

As the 75th president of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln, I am honored to lead an organization that values leadership and growth. Our industry thrives when we invest in these qualities, fostering collaboration and innovation.

Leadership isn’t just about managing projects, it’s about setting an example, inspiring others and strengthening our industry. Whether you’re a builder, supplier, or industry partner, your role helps shape the future of home construction in our community. By supporting one another and sharing knowledge, we can elevate our profession together.

Personal growth is equally important. Great leaders embrace challenges, pursue improvement and remain open to new ideas. Growth doesn’t happen by chance, it requires effort and a mindset of progress. I urge each of you to set new goals, step outside your comfort zone and strive for excellence.

Tell us about your family. My boyfriend Evan is in his first year for his Masters of Architecture at UNL. We graduated in May, Architecture for him and Interior Design for me. We have two cats, Goose and Ash, who are our world even though Goose is an absolute menace but Ash makes up for it with his sweet nature. We enjoy staying in but enjoy minigolf, going to the Henry Doorly Zoo, etc.

What are you currently reading or listening to? NCIDQ Prep and a lot of Taylor Swift and Eminem.

Name a recent movie you watched that blew you away. Twister

What are you currently bingewatching? Yellowstone

Best restaurant you've ever been to? San Remo in New York. They serve authentic Italian food and their gluten free options are delicious.

Favorite place you've traveled? A tie between Santorini, Greece and Barcelona, Spain.

Where are you from? Where did you go to school? I grew up in Benkelman, NE and went to the University of NebraskaLincoln for Interior Design.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? At 23 years old, I have already visited seven countries.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Luck (inspired by Deadpool 2).

Who is someone who's made a big impact on your life? Why? My mentor Bradley during my internship in college.

In the ten months I worked with him, he taught me about being an inspector and so much more in the professional construction/design world. I'm forever grateful for all his help.

What do you love the most about your job? I love working with clients, helping them achieve their dream kitchen/bath and the differences in each project.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? Why? My college professor, Kendra Ordia. She has conducted extensive research in biophilic design and interior nature, and I believe incorporating these concepts into the home environment would be an excellent design approach.

What are your future goals and aspirations for your career? I am working on my NCIDQ certification but am also looking into CKBD certification.

It feels like spring is finally here, which means there is a flurry of activity for HBAL and the Remodelers Council.

The Remodelers Council had a great turnout for last month's tour of Lincoln's newest fire station. With the unique challenges of balancing the need for function, public service and living accommodations, we heard how Lincoln Fire & Rescue, the City of Lincoln and the design team collaborated to design a facility to serve Lincoln better while also considering the health and wellbeing of our first responders. It was intriguing to learn how much the needs of the fire service and first responders have changed since the original Station 8 was built in 1958.

Be sure to mark your calendars for two other important events this month. Construction Career Days on April 23 will help get the next generation excited about career opportunities in our industry. The following weekend is the Tour of Remodeled Homes on April 26 & 27. Be sure to get out and support your fellow Remodelers Council members showcasing their work.

Cheers, Matt
