President’s Message

Herb Reese, HBAL President A common childhood fear is being afraid of the dark. My own children went through phases of waking my wife and me up in the middle of the night, unconsolably crying. The culprit of the tears was the fear of not knowing what was in the room. They heard a sound; was it a monster, a person, or just the normal sounds a house makes? They feared the unknown. We are in the midst of this fear right now in our society. COVID-19 is the unknown. Just as I did for my children many times, I dragged my exhausted body out of bed to search in the dark for the monster hiding under their bed. We are all searching for answers in the dark. “Don’t be scared, we are right here to protect you.” These are the words I would use to comfort my children. These are my words of action to all of you today. Firstly, do NOT be afraid. We all need to remain positive amid the changes occurring day to day. Secondly, we need to support one another. These are not times of competition, instead we need to help each other out. We are all searching for answers to the same questions. Businesses around us are starting to close and wonder how they will be able to make it through this. Employers are searching for ways to pay their employees when business has ultimately halted. These ‘monsters under the bed’ keep us up at night. This is a time for togetherness, within businesses, between businesses and within our own families. Let us remember we are not alone, reach out to one another and offer help when you can. This is a time for prudence not panic, alertness not anxiousness, and positivity not negativity.

Message from Lincoln Water System:

Damaged Water Main Valve Boxes Lincoln Homebuilders, It has come to our attention that several water main valve boxes have been damaged during new housing construction. Our field crews are identifying the sources as concrete prep work (sidewalks, driveway approaches), final grading prep work for seed/sod, and underground sprinkler installation. We are sending you all a friendly reminder to inform these contractors of the mentioned issues. If this type of work is being performed in the city right of way, they are required to make contact with 811 (one-call) diggers hotline for locating those noted utilities. Lincoln’s water main valve boxes are approximately 6” in diameter and would be located when a one-call is requested. If a valve box is discovered by a contractor performing work, and it needs some adjustment, we would like to be notified. There is no charge for this service and we would make the necessary adjustment without question. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 402-441-5921. Thanks! Young Building Professionals

Spring is finally here and warmer weather is on the horizon! Although many of our events have been canceled or postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, we are planning to reschedule most of them to a later date. We are looking forward to rescheduling our Midday Meetup featuring guest speaker Sarah Collins. She will be talking Kristin Sims to us about how to appropriately ‘sell yourself’ and how to present YBP President yourself to colleagues, coworkers or managers in a business environment. I am really excited to listen to her speak and I think this will be a great opportunity for anyone who can attend. She is AMAZING, and you will not want to miss this! Please check your e-mails for further details and information moving forward. Our YBP Light the Way 5K is still scheduled in June and we are actively looking for sponsors for the event. If you are interested in sponsoring, please contact me or Andrea at HBAL. This will be a difficult time for many of us in the industry, for our families, our friends and our colleagues. Stay safe, stay healthy and hang in there. Best wishes to all of you!

Remodelers Council

Tour of the Post Lofts March 4, 2020

Publication of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln April 2020 • Vol. 23, No. 4

Chairperson’s Message by Heidi Polacek

What a difference just a few weeks make. Last month we were able to tour the old Post & Nickel building and see some amazing transformations into new storefronts and condos. We chatted with our fellow members and made plans to see the finished products when they are complete. Now we are canceling events and talking about social distancing. I wish I could say we are able to continue our jobs and work from home, but unfortunately for many of us that isn’t the case. I truly hope you are all doing well, working as much as you can. Try to find the positives in every situation and use this time to slow down, spend some time with your family or reconnect (virtually) with old friends. Although our April and May Remodelers Council meetings have been canceled, one event we haven’t canceled is the Tour of Remodeled Homes. This event has been rescheduled for June 13-14. We have extended the deadline for entries and advertising, so if you would like to participate or have questions about the event, please don’t hesitate to email Jennie Korth at jennie@hbal.org. This is an important event for our members and we hope to be able to open these homes for those itching to get out of the house and wanting to start a project of their own!
