Time is sure flying by this summer. It seems like we are constantly trying to balance life and work, all while we are cramming in summertime activities like vacations, ball games and trips to the pool. Before we know it, the kids are back to school and we start the routine of homework and extracurricular activities once again. I hope you all are able to take some time this summer to relax and enjoy the sun! On August 10 we will have our 6th Annual Hog Roast. Many thanks to the Kleinschmit Family for allowing us to hold this event on their property. We are excited to make this event free for our members as a way to say “Thank You” for your ongoing support of HBAL. The Bean Bag Toss Tournament is starting to fill and there are only a few spots remaining, so make sure you contact Andrea at the HBAL office to sign up your team of two. Another fun August event is the Remodelers Council Golf Tournament at Holmes Golf Course on August 24. This is a four-man scramble with a shotgun start. Throw in some fun side games and you have an entertaining day on the golf course, even if you’ve never swung a club! There was an article in the newspaper a couple weeks ago reporting the mayor is including $650,000 in the second year of his new budget to replace lead water service lines to about 3,000 homes. When all homes are completed over 14 years, the total cost is expected to be $21 million. While the HBAL Board of Directors is supportive of replacing lead water service lines, we oppose using City funds for the replacement of any water service line on private property. If the replacement of lead water service lines is a mandate, then we would prefer the City use low or no-interest financing through the City if a property owner cannot pay for the replacement. A property with a lead water service line should not be treated differently than a property which needs the water service line replaced because of damage by tree roots or from being undersized. New construction also pays for the installation of water service lines, so everyone should be treated equally. If there’s concern about potential backflow from the lead water service line and the property owner refuses to replace the line, the City should install a backflow preventer at the tap and charge the property owner. The City Council will be voting on the mayor’s budget on August 8. I shared our position with the City Council on July 30, if you also feel strongly about this issue I would encourage you to reach out to City Council members to share your thoughts. Looking ahead to September, mark your calendar to attend lunch on Thursday, September 13 at the HBAL office and bring a potential member! The centerfold of this issue is designed to “TEAR & SHARE!” It contains information about the lunch and other upcoming events, six reasons you should belong to HBAL, a list of contributions by the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation and a membership application.

What is your mission statement? Every day, we want to be “improving life with energy.” We are a customer-oriented, vertically integrated energy company with a tradition of top-tier service and a vision to be the energy partner of choice. Through our efforts, products and services, we also share our personal energy to strengthen our communities and support growth and development.

Member News In Sympathy Our sympathy to Dann & Laure Husmann, HBAL, on the death of Dann’s dad, Bob Husmann, who passed away on July 9.

Congratulations Christina & Derek Melgoza Krueger Development

How long has your company been in business? We’ve had different names over the years, but we’ve been providing natural gas in Lincoln for more than 80 years. As the community has grown, so has Black Hills Energy. Black Hills Energy was founded in Deadwood, South Dakota more than 130 years ago and began serving the Lincoln area in 2008 after acquiring Aquila. Based in Rapid City, South Dakota, we serve more than 1.2 million electric and natural gas utility customers in nearly 800 communities in eight states: Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. What services do you offer? Black Hills Energy’s vision is to be the energy partner of choice. We do that in Lincoln by providing safe, reliable natural gas and working closely with our community to support and encourage growth. Black Hills Energy also offers Service Guard. Service Guard specializes in repairing all major brands of home appliances, both gas and electric. How many employees do you have? There are approximately 480 employees across the state of Nebraska and in Lincoln there are approximately 100 team members supporting our natural gas customers. What community service events do you participate in? We’re proud to partner with many non-profits across Lincoln, including Junior Achievement, the Salvation Army and the United Way. We’ve also made charitable contributions from the Black Hills Corporation Foundation to several non-profits including Tabitha, Fresh Start, Friendship Home and the Lincoln Career Academy. Lincoln team members also volunteer their time doing everything from helping with 10/11’s annual Can Care-a-Van food drive to the Boys and Girls Clubs holiday food drive. How long have you been a member of HBAL? As a longtime community partner, Black Hills Energy has been a member of HBAL since 1954. What HBAL events does your company participate in? Black Hills Energy has been an active member with HBAL participating in most events. Residential and commercial representative Ruth Hietbrink serves on the Board of Directors for HBAL and volunteers her time at many events as well. Some notable events include: Nebraska Builders Home & Garden Show, Chili

Cook-off, Parade of Homes, Golf Tournaments, Santa Cop Project, Sporting Clay Shoot and Hog Roast! Why do you belong to HBAL? 1. Building valuable relationships and partnerships along with networking. 2. Keep up to date with critical information about the building industry and codes. 3. A chance to give back to the community and ensure our community continues to grow and thrive. 4. Staying informed through the monthly publications. 5. Marketing and advertising the benefits of natural gas for home owners and builders. 6. Educational opportunities to learn more about the industry and the vital role energy plays in home building and remodeling.

HBAL Membership

“I joined Home Builders 20 years ago and have met many great friends and created some of the best business contacts! There are so many ways to get to know people from the fun activities like the golf tournaments and Hog Roast to going to Remodelers Council lunches or the social hour before HBAL meetings. I’m most excited about the Young Building Professional’s group and helping those who are just getting started in our field make connections like I did.”

“I have always recognized the importance of supporting HBAL but it wasn’t until I got actively involved that I realized how much the HBAL group does to support and protect our industry.” – Bo Jones, Tru Built Construction

- Lori Wellman, Lincoln Cabinet

“I value my HBAL membership because of the growth I have experienced as a professional and business owner. The networking and resources I receive from HBAL as a young home builder are invaluable in helping me run my business.”

“I value the opportunity that HBAL affords me to work with fellow builders to better our community. Learning from the extensive base of knowledge of fellow builders is invaluable. The camaraderie and friendships that I have developed through HBAL have made me a better builder and person.” - Denny Van Horn, Van Horn Family Building Co.

HBAL Job Board

The homebuilding industry is continuing to experience a labor shortage. To address this, HBAL has partnered with other industryrelated associations and created BuildOurNebraska.com, a resource for young adults looking for guidance and direction when thinking about their future career paths. This website is shared via high school guidance counselors, social media and includes links to available positions in the construction industry. As a benefit to our members, we created a page on our website dedicated to job listings from our members. We are asking you to help us populate this page with your current job openings.

YOUR AD HERE! This 3.75” x 2.25” space is available for an ad. For more information, please contact Jennie at 402-423-4225 or jennie@hbal.org.

For instructions on posting your job, go to www.HBAL.org/resources/jobs You will find a link to detailed instructions at the bottom of the page. OR.....to make things a little easier, send us the link to your company's career page on your website via info@hbal.org.

Young Building Professionals

I can’t believe summer is coming to an end! Make sure you don’t miss the Bean Bag Tournament at the Hog Roast on August 10. The entry fee is just $10 per team and dinner is free this year for HBAL members! There are a few spots left for the bean bag toss, so make sure you call the office to register your team.

Hayley Lane YBP President

Thank you to Allo Communications for hosting our first morning mixer in July. We had a great turnout and it was fun to tour their beautiful building and hear the great things Allo is doing. We TRIPLED our proceeds we were able to donate to the Lighthouse from our Light the Way 5K this year! That is a huge accomplishment in our second year of this event and it would have not been possible without all of our generous sponsors and supportive members. Thank you!! More fun events coming up with Lighthouse. Make sure you watch your email for details on a salsa tasting, Halloween haunted house and cookie decorating in December. These all provide a perfect opportunity to get to know the great kids and staff at Lighthouse.
