President’s Message Lois Hartzell, HBAL President What is your perspective on change? It seems to be a constant all around us. As we move into autumn and begin to see the leaves change, crops harvested and changes in weather I think about the changes and obstacles we have had this year. I am sure that I am not alone when I say I do not like change. Why do so many of us get excited about the changing of the seasons and about all of the new opportunities coming? Why don’t we think about the unexpected changes in our lives this way? Our Association experiences constant change as does our industry, I challenge you to think of these changes more like the changing of seasons. What opportunities or adventures lie ahead? Will I notice them or be prepared to consider them? The Fall Parade of Homes will be here in only a few days! I encourage you to tell friends, family, neighbors and co-workers about this great opportunity. Look to see what is new for various rooms, finishes, appliances, landscaping, etc. One of the great benefits of having such great members in an association is the opportunity to get to know one another and build lasting relationships. If hunting, guns or even just the outdoors are of interest to you, checkout the October 13th Sporting Clay Shoot at Oak Creek Sporting Club. If you feel luck is on your side or you have an interest in learning to play poker, the October 21st Poker Night may be of more interest. Either way these will be fun events and opportunities to socialize and get to know one another. As for change, I’ll have to try following my own advice in order to click “Like” on these new Facebook improvements. . . . . . .

Educational Opportunity: CAPS I & II

October Educational Seminars Build your Business through Education!

Two of the October educational seminars are required to earn the CAPS designation. The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation program teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry: home modifications for the aging-in-place. Aging-in-place means remaining in one’s home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level. The CAPS programs will expand your understanding of the aging-in-place market, provide the necessary technical knowledge and resources, and give you the tools to gain access to that market.

There are strong arguments to be made on both sides. You need to weigh all of the factors, and make a decision based on your own needs and priorities. It’s best to have a professional assist you with this, since the decision you make may have significant consequences--both now and in the future. Reasons to roll over to an IRA: • You generally have more investment choices with an IRA than with an employer’s 401(k) plan. You typically may freely move your money around to the various investments offered by your IRA trustee, and you may divide up your balance among as many of those investments as you want. By contrast, employer-sponsored plans typically give you a limited menu of investments (usually mutual funds) from which to choose. • You can freely allocate your IRA dollars among different IRA trustees/custodians. There’s no limit on how many direct, trustee-to-trustee IRA transfers you can do in a year. This gives you flexibility to change trustees often if you are dissatisfied with investment performance or customer service. It can also allow you to have IRA accounts with more than one institution for added diversification. With an employer’s plan, you can’t move the funds to a different trustee unless you leave your job and roll over the funds. joestreich@wradvisors. bwillet@wradvisors. • An IRA may give you more flexibility with distributions. Your distribution com com options in a 401(k) plan depend on the terms of that particular plan, and your options may be limited. However, with an IRA, the timing and amount of distributions is generally at your discretion (until you reach age 70½ and must start taking required minimum distributions in the case of a traditional IRA). • You can roll over (essentially “convert”) your 401(k) plan distribution to a Roth IRA. You’ll have to pay taxes on the amount you roll over (minus any after-tax contributions you’ve made), but any qualified distributions from the Roth IRA in the future will be tax free. Reasons to roll over to your new employer’s 401(k) plan: • Many employer-sponsored plans have loan provisions. If you roll over your retirement funds to a new employer’s plan that permits loans, you may be able to borrow up to 50% of the amount you roll over if you need the money. You can’t borrow from an IRA--you can only access the money in an IRA by taking a distribution, which may be subject to income tax and penalties. (You can, however, give yourself a short-term loan from an IRA by taking a distribution, and then rolling the dollars back to an IRA within 60 days.) • A rollover to your new employer’s 401(k) plan may provide greater creditor protection than a rollover to an IRA. Most 401(k) plans receive unlimited protection from your creditors under federal law. Your creditors (with certain 9  Lincoln Business Builder

Members of the Remodelers Council toured Bedient Pipe Organ in September.

Published by the Remodelers Council of Lincoln • October 2011

Chairperson’s Message by Jenny Samek

Fall is in the air! It’s that time of year. The temperatures start dropping, the leaves start changing color and it gets dark way to soon! When we start envisioning the cold there are some products we can suggest to our customers to help endure the winter months. In-floor heat keeps the toes warm. Insta-hot drinking water systems provide boiling water on demand for your hot tea, coffee, oatmeal and even a hot toddy to warm us. For the more delicate, there are heated toilet seats. My favorite for those short dark days is Chromatherapy: light therapy for your whirlpool tub! When we have those short dark days, you know what the lack of sun does for your mood and well being. Now you can add lighting in your tub to make your day brighter and feel more energized! Thanks for everyone who joined us for the tour of the Bedient Pipe Organ Company. It was interesting to see all the craftsmanship that goes into those beautiful instruments. It was also reassuring that we aren’t the only industry being regulated for lead. At least we are not required to have our pants weighed at the end of the day. Please join us for our next meeting at West Gate Bank Center. Tracy Munoz from The Minnow Project will be presenting on Social Media and Website Marketing.

QR Codes: Where can they take you?

QR Codes You see them everywhere, but do you know where they can take you? QR is short for Quick Response and dates back to 1994 when Toyota used it to track parts in automobile manufacturing. Today, QR codes are taking companies to new heights, allowing marketing departments to use these small 2-D barcodes to communicate a large amount of information in sometimes limited advertising space. Anyone who has a smartphone can scan these codes which can take them to a website, send them a text message or display a schedule of events while at a conference. (Most smart phones come with a QR reader. If not, you can usually download one for free through your app store.) Below are a few places where you might want to take advantage of QR Codes: • Business Cards - scanning the QR Codes could automatically send your contact information to the customer’s mobile device • Realtor or Builder Yard Signs - potential customers driving through neighborhoods could scan the QR Code to receive more information on the property • Posters/Flyers - if you have a Facebook page for your business, a great way to add fans is to send people directly to your Facebook page via a QR Code QR Codes are quick and easy to create. Just search “QR Code Generator” on the web and there are several free options for you to choose from. HBAL is already using QR codes. If you have a smartphone, scan the QR code on the next page or on the cover of this issue of the Lincoln Business Builder and see where it takes you.
