President’s Message Justin Johnson HBAL President It was an honor to be installed as your 2016 president at the January General Membership Meeting. It’s a true privilege to be part of such a great association. My thanks to all who were able to attend and congratulations to all the award winners. A special thanks to Mike May for his extraordinary service to our association in 2015. HBAL is truly blessed to have so many who step up and volunteer their time for the common good of the association. I look forward to doing my part and ask you to join me in any way you can. We have a great 2016 schedule in store at HBAL. Two major events are just around the corner. Our premier event, The Nebraska Home & Garden Show, will be held February 12-14 at the Lancaster Event Center. This is our 44th show and booths are filling up quickly so call today before they’re sold out. Our 8th annual Chili Cook-off to benefit the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation is scheduled for the evening of March 14th at the Shrine Center. Join the competition and reserve your FREE booth today or let HBAL do the cooking and bring the whole family – my kids look forward to this event every year. Chili Entrant Info Cost for a booth - FREE Chili preparation and booth set-up: 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. *All preparation MUST be done at the Shrine Center!* Exhibitors (cooks) will: • Prepare 3 gallons of chili (in a roaster pan) • Have their own meat thermometer • Bring a table cover • Provide their own three-prong extension cords • Choose a MUSIC THEME for their booth & decorate (Please, do not attach anything to the walls
or use materials that cannot be easily vacuumed. We also ask that contestants keep any music at a respectable decible and that they do not use strobelights. Thank you!)

The Renegade Gardener™ Top 10 Gardening & Landscaping Blunders—and How to Avoid Them! Sure, gardening is fun, soothing, enriching and all of that, but don’t always believe it when you see a landscaping project described as “easy,” or a plant touted as “foolproof.” Fact is, gardening is a lifelong learning process that involves more than a little guesswork, serendipity, and experimentation. Down the road, every gardener is sure to discover that startling success sometimes goes hand-in-hand with staggering failure. Don Engebretson, The Renegade Gardener, wants to help gardeners severely limit the “staggering failure” part of the equation, and does so in his presentation, “Top 10 Gardening & Landscaping Blunders—and How to Avoid Them.” Don’s list is a like a bestseller list, with mistakes dropping off while new ones are added, reflecting the continued growth of gardening as American’s number one leisure time activity. To make his list, three important criteria apply: First, it must be a common mistake, as common as crabgrass. Second, the blunder must impart a truly gruesome effect on one’s landscape. Third, and most important, it must be a blunder that Don has made—at least twice—during his 20+ years as a gardener! With a strong emphasis on design do’s and don’ts, audiences leave the presentation with a firm understanding of how to create a functional, beautiful landscape on their property.
Common Gardening Myths and the Mayhem They Cause They are as common as deer, as persistent as Japanese Beetles and as tough to wipe out as Creeping Charley: erroneous myths about garden plants, products and procedures that cost gardeners time and money while actually harming the look and health of their gardens. In this fast-paced primer, Don dispenses the false notions created by common gardening myths by replacing error with the truth about fertilizers, wood mulch, landscape fabric, chemical products, lawn mower settings, planting procedures, soil amendments, and a dozen more.

The City of Lincoln is hosting a FREE stormwater management training event for landscape professionals on Tuesday, February 23 at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. Attend one (or both) for FREE, the cost is subsidized by the City of Lincoln, Public Works & Utilities, Watershed Management Division. Part I: Green Infrastructure: Stormwater Practices that Infiltrate! - Tuesday, Februar y 23 - 8:30 am – 12:00 pm Learn the latest in green infrastructure practices that capture and treat stormwater and can act as aesthetically pleasing landscaping features as well! Practices include rain gardens, enhanced rain gardens, bioretention cells and bioswales, soil quality restoration, native landscaping and native turf, green roofs and permeable pavers. Part II: Inspection and Maintenance of Stormwater Practices Certification Program - Tuesday, Februar y 23 12:45 pm – 4:45 pm Stormwater practices need inspection and maintenance services to ensure they continue to function properly and look good.
