Can you keep up with all your responsibilities? About one year ago, I was having a rough day and found myself running from one responsibility to the other when a friend stopped me and asked how I was doing. I guess he had seen the stress in my actions and was concerned about me. (Don’t get me wrong--everything was in good order. I was just losing my breath trying to keep up with everything.) My friend went on to explain that life’s responsibilities are like juggling a bunch of balls. I had heard this metaphor before however he explained it a little differently to me this time. He referred to the balls as either glass or rubber. The glass ones represent the things in my life that I must focus on (they break when dropped and of course are much harder to fix). Rubber balls are those responsibilities that, if neglected, will bounce when fallen and you can pick them up without much harm done. Upon hearing this a year ago, I have been able to let go of some things and best yet, I have not let it bother me when it does not meet my expectation. This leads me to just the other day, when I ran into an old neighbor and was asked by him and his wife, “How are you doing?” I answered by excitingly sharing with them that I had all my “glass balls of responsibility” in the air! I was very proud and wanted to share that this was the first time I was ever able to say this. Unfortunately, the next day I felt one glass ball drop with my junior in high school. Feeling defeated yet again, I had to stop and think that maybe I need to re-categorize my life again by asking myself “what are truly the ‘glass balls’ in my life?” A question I asked myself was, “If I were to die tomorrow what am I doing in my life that really matters?” By answering this, I realized that my work or my accomplishments did not even cross my mind, although on a daily basis it is by far the most I think about. What did register was my relationship with God, my wife and my family. I guess this seems obvious, but wow it is really hard to let go of everything else. 1 Peter 5:7 - Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. God Bless you in all you do,

FYI, upon writing this letter I found myself running from the office to the house and grabbing a late sandwich...yep I was late for a meeting. I started laughing to myself when I thought of what I just wrote and how I immediately picked up my normal pace. As I was running out of the house my daughter, home sick from school, was standing at the edge of the kitchen and I did something I have not been known to do; I paused in my steps and gave her a moment showing that I cared for her. I guess it all starts with the little things…

Chili Entrant Info Cost for a booth - FREE Chili preparation and booth set-up: 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. *All preparation MUST be done at the Shrine Center!* Exhibitors (cooks) will: • Prepare 3 gallons of chili (in a roaster pan) • Have their own meat thermometer • Bring a table cover • Provide their own three-prong extension cords • Have the option to decorate your booth (Please, do not attach anything to the walls or use materials that cannot be easily vacuumed. Ervin E. Peterson Founders Award The Ervin E. Peterson Founders Award is the retention spike of the year award. Justin Johnson earned this reward in both 2015 and 2016 for retaining the most members.

Goddard Named DSC Employee of the Year The Development Services Center Employee of the Year Award went to Mel Goddard. Mel was hired by Building & Safety while Helen Boosalis was Mayor, the City of Lincoln had adopted the 1973 edition of the Uniform Building Code, mailing a letter cost $0.08, gas was $0.36 per gallon and the average price of a new home was $35,000. After 40 years with Building and Safety and 24 years as Chief Building Inspector, Mel retired in September last year. HBAL appreciates all he has done for our industry.

President’s Award

The process of selecting the recipient for the 2016 President’s Award was an easy one for outgoing President, Justin Johnson. Without Fred Hoppe’s continual support and encouragement and his unwavering guidance Justin would not be where he is today as the outgoing President of this Association. Fred Hoppe introduced Justin to HBAL over 15 years ago when he hired him on at Hoppe Homes. Since then Justin has had the opportunity to learn from his leadership and his active participation in the Association. Fred has never backed down in fighting HBAL’s position on key issues facing our industry. Our sympathy to Bob & Sheri Hampton, Hampton Development Services, and family of HBAL Past President, Joe Hampton, Hampton Enterprises, Inc., who passed away on January 30. Joe began building his company after moving to Lincoln in 1947. After pursuing an electrical apprenticeship, he expanded his business ventures into constructing small office buildings. Hampton Enterprises evolved from a home-based business into a successful commercial development company. Hampton Enterprises, Inc. grew to be recognized as a full-service real estate development and property management company. Joe was President of HBAL in 1961.

How did you get started in the business? My background is both in the financial industry and the energy efficiency for home building and both served me well when the opportunity to buy Goings Homes was available.

A spokesman for Hampton Enterprises issued the following statement: “While Joe’s passing was not unexpected, we are all nonetheless saddened by the news. Joe Hampton was undoubtedly an extraordinary man, an icon in the development of Lincoln. He frequently saw opportunities where others did not. It was that vision that led to many of his successes as well as Joe going to great lengths to ensure that Hampton Enterprises will continue to do business for a very long time – the way Joe did – determining success by the number of satisfied tenants and building owners we touch.”

Matt Kinning has done an outstanding job over the last two years and I am so excited to continue that momentum in 2017. We have a lot of incredible things planned Tyler Reynolds to help our members continue to YBP President network with one another, give back to the community and strengthen their knowledge and understanding of our industry. We kicked the year off with a bang at last month’s holiday party with an incredible turnout and raised over $900 to help fund our community outreach endeavors and other YBP projects.
