President’s Message Matt Kinning, HBAL President After being installed as HBAL’s 71st president on Zoom last week, my hope is this was the last time we’ll have to do HBAL’s installation by video. I am glad my father was able to perform my installation and my family was able to join me. Thank you to Herb for leading HBAL through the uncertain times we faced this past year. He liked to joke he was the President who never had to do anything and canceled everything. He and I were able to set a couple new records this past year. Shortest board meeting and shortest installation of officers. Here’s to hoping 2021 brings more meetings in person and the opportunities to network with other members. If you enjoy good chili, then be sure to come to the HBAL Drive-Thru Chili Feed. The HBAL staff and a couple volunteers will be serving chili 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on February 4 at the HBAL office. If you know you’d like to grab a bowl of chili, please RSVP. Limited quantities will be available, and your only cost is a free-will donation with all proceeds benefiting the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation. On January 28, HBAL will have their annual Legislative bill review. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Michaela at HBAL. We are aware of several bills this session that could impact the cost of housing and the ease of development. We have a small group of members who are looking at the Mayor’s Draft Climate Action Plan and will be sending feedback to the City once the list is available for public comment. If you have concerns about the Plan, or if you would like to participate with comments, please let me or Michaela know. Watch your mail for contracts for the 2021 Spring Parade of Homes. I know there are several builders who are already planning to participate. This is a great opportunity to showcase your talent and hard work. I look forward to the coming year and thank you for allowing me to lead HBAL in 2021.

YBP officers conducted a virtual installation on Thursday, January 7. The YBP Officers for 2021 are: Bailey Ward, Secretary, Blake Pittack, Vice President and myself as your 2021 YBP President. It was great to see new and familiar faces.
Sam Swartz YBP President
Our group is very excited to start working on two new projects for 2021. As we retired the Light the Way 5K after four successful years, we are heading back to the drawing board and putting together a car show committee. The goal is to bring more awareness and support to the trades and local high school shop classes. If you are interested in finding a new way to serve and get involved, we encourage you to reach out for more information. COVID-19 has made it difficult for YBP to hold our normal social events, but rest assured as soon as we are able, we will be getting back to our Hard Hat Happy Hours. We are looking forward to seeing you at an event in the very near future!

Remodelers Council
Save the Date!
Wednesday, February 24 11:30 a.m. Publication of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln February 2021 • Vol. 24, No. 2
One month into the new year, are you still going strong with your resolutions or goals? One of my goals is to get more organized. So far, so good. I’ve cleaned closets and donated items we no longer use. February may be more challenging as I’m Sue Eaton going to tackle the storage Remodelers Council Chairperson room in the basement. We’ve shuffled around our first quarter Remodelers Council schedule due to the Home Show. We will be revisiting the Post Lofts on February 24. If you remember, we toured the building last March. This was one of the last “normal” events HBAL staff had planned. I hope this meeting will in a way be full-circle and mark the end of our modified/ canceled events. HBAL members are invited to a drive-thru chili feed on February 4. Please RSVP to andrea@hbal.org to ensure there is enough chili and cinnamon rolls to go around! The Home and Garden Show has been moved to March 12-14, so we will not have a March Remodelers meeting. We do still plan on collecting non-perishable food items for the Food Bank of Lincoln, however no volunteers will be needed as we won’t have the Food Bank House at the Home Show. If you plan to attend or if you are exhibiting, please remember to bring something to support the Food Bank!
Tour of the finished Post Lofts. Watch your email for more information!

2020 Tax Year-End Planning & Updates
2020 Tax Year-End Planning & Updates
2020 was an unprecedented year for billions of people across the globe, but small businesses were some of those who were impacted most severely. Here is a brief summary of some of the government and state assistance programs:
Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act • Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans ◊ Available to virtually all small businesses with payroll costs ◊ Also, available to self-employed individuals and farmers ◊ Forgivable loans and the expenses paid with the PPP funds are now fully deductible • Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) ◊ Up to $2 million loan ◊ 3.75% interest rate and payments deferred for one year ◊ Up to 30-year term ◊ Up to $10,000 advance grant that does not have to be repaid • Nebraska Small Business Stabilization Grants ◊ $12,000 grant to small businesses in Nebraska ◊ Additional $12,000 to certain industries ◊ These applications are now closed • Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) ◊ Tax credits to businesses for paying employees affected by COVID-19 • Employee Retention Credits ◊ Refundable credit for payroll taxes paid to employees during the year ◊ Also, applies to the first two quarters of 2021 ◊ Must have had a significant loss in revenue or been suspended due to government orders • Deferral of employer Social Security and Medicare taxes through December 31, 2021 ◊ Available to all employers ◊ Taxes must eventually be paid, but deferred until at least December 31, 2021 • Business related meals are now fully 100% deductible for 2021 and 2022. ◊ They were previously 50% deductible • Permanent extension of the energy-efficient commercial building deduction and the reduced excise tax rate on beer, wine, and spirit makers Additionally, 2020 proved to be a year that year-end tax planning was even more important and useful than usual. It will be crucial to pay attention to additional guidance, assistance and regulations that come out over the next few months regarding all of the above programs and how to access them if you are in need as well as how to properly account for them. If you have questions or would like to know more about any of the above programs or any further tax or planning questions please feel free to contact us! spgrouppc.com

Roth IRAs
Roth IRAs
Who should consider converting to a Roth IRA? A Roth IRA may be right for you if:
• You believe your tax rates will be higher in the future • Your income may be lower than usual this year • Your IRA account value is lower this year due to the pandemic • You don’t need the money to live on for at least five years • You want to leave the money to your heirs • You are concerned about estate taxes
Who should not convert? A Roth conversion may not be the best strategy if:
• Purchase umbrella liability coverage as a backstop for data breach insurance and other insurance policies. Umbrella coverage kicks in when the claim is greater than your primary insurance coverage limits and is generally very affordable.
Data Breaches – Industry studies show
that data breaches cost small to medium businesses an average of $200,000. These costs include customer notification, fines, investigation costs, defense attorney fees and the expense of providing affected individuals with a year of identity theft monitoring services after the breach. Information provided by:
• You will need the money within five years • You’re in a higher tax bracket now than you expect to be in retirement
Any Brick You Use Can Last for Hundreds of Years. So Be Particular.
Traditional IRA owners can now continue to make contributions past the age of 70 ½. Effective in 2020, non-spousal heirs can no longer stretch IRA distributions over their lifetimes. Instead, funds must be distributed within ten years of the original owner’s death. (Some exceptions apply.) For 2020, a new ‘above-the-line’ deduction for cash donations of up to $300 is available for non itemizers.
Protecting your business: • Provide data security training to all employees • Run automatic network virus scans and antivirus software updates • Download the latest operating system and software updates and patches • Purchase data breach insurance and consider cyber liability insurance and technology errors and omissions policies
